Connections And Disconnections: The Making Of Bombay/Mumbai As India’S “Global City”, Ravi Ghadge
Connections And Disconnections: The Making Of Bombay/Mumbai As India’S “Global City”, Ravi Ghadge
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
Scholarly literature on “global cities” has been criticized for ignoring the long-term historical context within which cities articulate the relationship between the global and the local. Employing a longue durée globalization perspective, this paper historicizes the unequal and uneven nature of contemporary urban development in Mumbai, India’s “global city.” The paper uses two analytical frames: the “port city” and the “colonial city” to highlight two essential dimensions of Mumbai’s contemporary transformation of interconnectedness and segmentation based on unequal power.
Insights Into The Reactivation, Regulation And Essentiality Of Oxidative Protein Folding Pathways In Actinobacteria, Belkys Sanchez
Insights Into The Reactivation, Regulation And Essentiality Of Oxidative Protein Folding Pathways In Actinobacteria, Belkys Sanchez
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Accurate disulfide bond formation is important for proper folding, stability and function of exported proteins. The process of disulfide bond formation, termed oxidative protein folding, is catalyzed by thiol-disulfide oxidoreductase enzymes. Oxidative protein folding pathways influence processes essential for bacterial physiology and pathogenicity. In the Gram-positive actinobacterial pathogens Actinomyces oris and Corynebacterium diphtheriae oxidative protein folding is catalyzed by the primary thiol-disulfide oxidoreductase MdbA. MdbA is required for assembly of adhesive pilus, which mediate receptor-dependent bacterial interactions, or coaggregation, in A. oris. In the first part of this dissertation, I identify components of the electron transport chain (ETC) required for …

Viral Prevalence Among Social Bees In Different Landscapes, Tugce Karacoban
Viral Prevalence Among Social Bees In Different Landscapes, Tugce Karacoban
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Honey bees and wild bees provide important pollination services to numerous crops and native plants. In recent years, declines in bee populations have highlighted the importance of the ecological services they provide and the need for more research into the reasons for their decline. Currently, many conservation efforts to mitigate bee losses include increasing forage and habitat, however, there is growing concern over the role interspecific pathogen transmission plays in bee decline. Viruses commonly found in honey bees may be transmitted and pose a threat to other bee species when bees come together at foraging sites. To elucidate the impact …

Managing For Vegetation Heterogeneity On Rangelands: An Exploration Of Rancher Attitudes, Stephanie Marie Kennedy
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Grasslands provide food, fiber, and numerous ecosystem services to human populations as well as habitat for wildlife. They are also some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world because of their productive soils and open topography. This problem is exacerbated by the accelerating conversion of grassland to cropland and encroaching trees and shrubs. The quality of remaining grasslands will be of increasing importance because of the biodiversity and vital ecosystem services they provide. Heterogeneity is a term specific to rangeland science that is illustrative of grassland health. Grassland species require very specific and differing habitats and without the variation …
The Biological Significance And Utility Of Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, Braymond Adams
The Biological Significance And Utility Of Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, Braymond Adams
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
With their efficient feeding habits and tolerance to very low moisture and humidity, beetles in the Family Dermestidae are especially adapted to variable environments and habitats. Dermestid cultures have been in use since 1922 in cleaning tissue and flesh from bones, and proven benefit in multiple fields, including zoology, ornithology, and forensics. Dermestid feeding behaviors when coupled with known life stage and insect succession information aids in providing significant entomological evidence. However, the feeding activities of insects, like those of vertebrate scavengers and predators, change remains and may leave artifacts that can be sometimes be difficult to assign to a …
Role Of Misclassification Estimates In Estimating Disease Prevalence And A Non-Linear Approach To Study Synchrony Using Heart Rate Variability In Chickens, Dola Pathak
Department of Statistics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Infectious disease assays can be imperfect. When estimating disease prevalence, these imperfections are accounted for by incorporating assay sensitivity and specificity into point and variance estimates. Unfortunately, these accuracy measures are often treated as fixed constants, rather than acknowledging that they are estimates from an assay validation process. The purpose of this study is to show the detrimental effect of not taking into account this sampling variability when samples are obtained through group testing (aka, pooled testing). We show that confidence interval coverage can dramatically decline as the sample size increases for the main sample of interest. As a remedy …

Variable rate irrigation may help in intensification of agriculture by producing more yield per unit inputs. Real time spatial information about water balance components is important for designing VRI prescription maps. This work involved use of a spatial evapotranspiration model for studying spatial variability in an agricultural field at the Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center near Mead, Nebraska. Imagery from unmanned aerial systems and Landsat were used as input for the spatial evapotranspiration model. Other inputs into the model were soil water content measurements from neutron probes, weather data, crop data, previous irrigation prescriptions, and soil properties for the …
Maternal N-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Supplementation Potentiates Brown Adipose Tissue Development And Reduces The Risk Of Childhood Obesity, Rong Fan
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a crucial regulator in energy expenditure by dissipating energy in the form of heat through mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). Previously, we demonstrated that n-3 PUFA (Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids) increase brown adipogenesis by miRNA-mediated epigenetic mechanisms. Given that BAT is formed at the late stage of pregnancy, we hypothesized prenatal exposure of n-3 PUFA through maternal nutrition potentiates BAT development. To test this hypothesis, Female C57BL/6 mice were fed a diet containing n-3 PUFA (3%) derived from fish oil (FO), or an isocaloric diet devoid of n-3 PUFA (Cont), and same diet was maintained …

Effect Of Comorbidities On Hiv-1 Pathogenesis In Monocytic Cells, Sabina Ranjit
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has substantially increased the life span of people living with HIV-1 (PLWH). However, the presence of comorbid conditions such as high prevalence of drug abuse and coinfections have deteriorated the health outcomes in PLWH and progression of HIV-1 infection to AIDS. In this study, we will be focusing on the independent effect of two major comorbidities: cigarette smoking and human papilloma virus (HPV) coinfection on HIV-1 replication and pathogenesis in monocytic cells.
The prevalence of smoking is approximately 3-times higher in PLWH compared to the general population. Scientific evidences suggest that smoking aggravates HIV-1 …

Prokaryote restriction modification (RM) systems serve to protect bacteria from potentially detrimental foreign DNA. Recent evidence suggests that DNA methylation by the methyltransferase (MTase) components of RM systems can also have effects on transcriptome profiles. The type strain of the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi B31, possesses two RM systems with N6-methyladenosine (m6A) MTase activity, which are encoded by the bbe02 gene located on linear plasmid lp25 and bbq67 on lp56. The specific recognition and/or methylation sequences had not been identified for either of these B. burgdorferi MTases, and it was not previously known whether these RM …

Kinesiology
Purpose: To examine data reporting characteristics in sports nutrition. Methods: We examined 236 papers from ten journals published in 2016. The primary outcome was statistical variance associated with treatment (SD (correct) vs. SEM or CI). Secondary outcomes included the reporting of: (a) effect sizes (Y/N); (b) outcome prioritization (Y/N; primary, secondary, etc.) and (c) statistical variance relative to change from baseline (CI (correct) vs. SD or SEM). As tertiary/exploratory outcome, we examined whether authors stated a directed hypothesis. Statistical evaluation was performed using chi-square analyses. Results: We observed significant trends for all analyses (p < 0.001) and between category comparisons (p < 0.002). For the primary outcome, 128 (59%) articles correctly used SD to denote treatment variance, while 79 (36%) and 11 (5%) used SEM and CI, respectively. For secondary outcomes, 63 articles (29%) reported effect sizes, while 155 (71%) did not. Additionally, 188 articles (86%) did not prioritize outcomes, 134 articles (61%) stated no hypotheses and 40 (19%, out of 100) articles used CI to denote change scores vs. SD (19%, n = 41) and SEM (n = 10, 5%). Eight articles (4%) reported no variance terms. Conclusions: Overall, there are gaps regarding reporting in sports nutrition. Editors, journal publishers, and the field of exercise science alike should consider these outcomes and provide editorial staff, reviewers and authors with more concrete guidelines.

The Private Insurance Market: Not Very Big And Not Insuring Much, Either, Jacqueline R. Fox
Faculty Publications
Creating a single national health insurance pool is not likely to destabilize the economy by supplanting the private health insurance industry. This industry insures a relatively small percentage of the population and holds very little of the risk such insurance implies. In effect, insurance companies function as middlemen, bundling risk packages to distribute to other, larger companies and so serve a limited purpose. Were insurers to handle claims for a national pool as they do for the Medicare program, any destabilization to the economy more broadly would be further minimized.
Enhancing E. Coli Removal From Slow-Rate Biofilters Treating Low-Carbon Source Waters, Darline Simoni Balen
Enhancing E. Coli Removal From Slow-Rate Biofilters Treating Low-Carbon Source Waters, Darline Simoni Balen
Master's Theses and Capstones
Optimizing ripening periods and maintaining removal efficiencies when treating high-quality source waters are some of the main challenges of slow-rate biofiltration. The ripening period of biofilters treating carbon-limited source waters can be significantly longer than biofilters treating nutrient-rich source waters, especially during colder temperatures. Abrupt changes in the influent water quality, e.g. surface water to groundwater, can also impact biofilter active biomass, and consequently biofilter performance. This study aimed to investigate how to reduce ripening period and improve removal efficiencies of slow-rate biofilters treating low-carbon waters by (i) increasing the organic carbon loading of the source water, and (ii) adding …
Quantifying Vertical Uncertainty And The Temporal Variability Of The Seafloor To Inform Hydrographic Survey Priorities, Cassandra Bongiovanni
Quantifying Vertical Uncertainty And The Temporal Variability Of The Seafloor To Inform Hydrographic Survey Priorities, Cassandra Bongiovanni
Master's Theses and Capstones
As the area of U.S. coastal waters vastly exceeds the capacity of annual hydrographic surveying, prioritization is necessary to optimize survey benefits. Obtaining new survey coverage over the most vital locations allows for an efficient use of funds; however, identifying these locations is a complex task. The current model to address survey prioritization, called the Hydrographic Health Model (or HHM), was created by personnel at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the authoritative agency tasked with chart maintenance and hydrographic survey collection. While the HHM incorporates potential sources of bathymetric change, it does not include nor lend itself to …

Using Case Work As A Pretest To Measure Crisis Leadership Preparedness, Johnette (Jay) Caulfield
Management Faculty Research and Publications
Today’s leaders must thrive in a world of turbulence and constant change. Unstable conditions frequently generate crises, emphasizing the need for crisis leadership preparedness, which is missing from many business curricula. Thus, the purpose of this work was to develop a learning module in crisis leadership preparedness. As a baseline measure or pretest, 217 graduate students were asked to analyze two crisis leadership cases during the first week of an entry leadership class. Content analysis provided the method to identify where student analyses fell short. These gaps in learning then informed the creation of student learning objectives. Applying inquiry-based learning, …

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Functional synaptic networks are compromised in many neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. While the mechanisms of axonal transport and localization of synaptic vesicles and mitochondria are relatively well studied, little is known about the mechanisms that regulate the localization of proteins that localize to active zones. Recent finding suggests that mechanisms involved in transporting proteins destined to active zones are distinct from those that transport synaptic vesicles or mitochondria. Here we report that localization of BRP-an essential active zone scaffolding protein in Drosophila, depends on the precise balance of neuronal Par-1 kinase. Disruption of Par-1 levels leads to excess accumulation of …
