A Practitioner Inquiry Of High School Teachers’ Experiences Participating As A Community Of Practice, Joe Don Procter
A Practitioner Inquiry Of High School Teachers’ Experiences Participating As A Community Of Practice, Joe Don Procter
Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this study was to explore high school teachers’ perceptions of self-directed professional development learning as participants in a community of practice. The questions for this study were: How did directing their own learning influence high school teachers’ perceptions of their professional development? How did participating in a community of practice influence high school teachers’ perceptions of their professional development?
Four teachers participated in a community of practice. Individual participants used practitioner inquiry to collect and to analyze data as appropriate to their classroom practice instructing the students. I was both a participant and a researcher in the …

Study Design: Systematic review.
Objectives: Past research has demonstrated increased speed and severity of progression for spinal epidural abscesses (SEAs) of the thoracic level, specifically, when compared with SEAs of other spinal cord levels. Untreated, this infection can result in permanent neurological sequelae with eventual progression to death if inadequately managed. Despite the seriousness of this disease, no articles have focused on the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of SEAs of the thoracic level. For this reason, specific focus on SEAs of the thoracic level occurred when researchers designed and implemented the following systematic review.
Methods: A query of Ovid-Medline and …
Exploring The Link Between Genetics, Chronic Stress, And Depression, Michael Woller
Exploring The Link Between Genetics, Chronic Stress, And Depression, Michael Woller
Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities (URCO) Grant Program
Depression is a very debilitating mental illness that affects about 7% of the American Population [1] and up to about 350 million people worldwide [2]. Since the cause for depression and the reason why some individuals are more vulnerable than others are currently unclear, studying paradigms that model depression in animals, such as the learned helplessness paradigm, is useful to explore possible mechanisms and devise new treatments. To explore a possible link between genetics, chronic stress and depression, we have exposed mice vulnerable to stress to an inescapable forced swim paradigm. During the forced swim test, the mice were monitored …

Inpatient Physical Therapy Management For A Patient With Chronic Pulmonary Complications Secondary To Multiple Lobectomies: A Case Report, Bayley Archinal
Inpatient Physical Therapy Management For A Patient With Chronic Pulmonary Complications Secondary To Multiple Lobectomies: A Case Report, Bayley Archinal
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Bronchiectasis is a disease defined by abnormal dilation of the bronchi from recurrent infections and/or chronic inflammation, which can lead to irreversible lung damage. Based upon severity and patient response to conservative treatment, a lobectomy may be required to resolve their symptoms. Though surgery may provide symptom relief and improve overall quality of life, patients are likely to have long-term pulmonary complications. There are several studies regarding the treatment of patients with pulmonary limitations secondary to a lobectomy. However, there is little to no evidence regarding the long-term treatment of patients who have undergone multiple lobectomies. The …
Gender Essentialism And Responses To Candidates’ Messages, Meredith Meyer
Gender Essentialism And Responses To Candidates’ Messages, Meredith Meyer
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
People often form negative attitudes against those who deviate from gender norms. Within the political realm, this has the potential to translate into effects on perceptions of candidate likability and traits. Female candidates who tend to focus on issues stereotypically thought of as feminine are generally more positively evaluated than those who focus on stereotypically masculine domains. The current studies investigate whether these effects vary depending on the extent to which people endorse gender essentialism, which is the tendency to attribute gender differences to relatively more intrinsic, innate, and immutable factors versus believing that gender differences are largely due to …

Green Lacewings And Water Sprays For Azalea Lace Bug Control, Jana C. Lee, Barry Finley, S. Michael Flores, Katerina Velasco Graham, J. Megan Woltz, Jessica S. Wong, Robin S. Rosetta
Faculty Scholarship
The azalea lace bug, Stephanitis pyrioides, is a serious pest of azaleas and rhododendrons which is often controlled by systemic insecticides. However, the efficacy of softer approaches such as biological control and water sprays against this pest on rhododendrons is unknown. Therefore, we tested the commercially available green lacewing predator, Chrysoperla rufilabris, and water sprays on lace bug infestation in one laboratory and four field trials. First, 2nd instar predator larvae were confirmed to consume lace bug nymphs and sometimes adults. Second, tapping predator larvae from hexcel units over dry leaves of potted rhododendrons and shaking loose eggs …

Field Implementation Of Rubberized Chip Seal, Ahmed Gheni, Alireza Pourhassan, Mohamed Elgawady, Yasser Darwish, William P. Schonberg
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Technical Reports
Chip seals have been widely used as a pavement maintenance surface treatment due to its competitive cost and construction time. Recently, the research team developed a rubberized chip seal where natural aggregate is replaced with crumb rubber obtained from recycled tires. During this study, a total of 108 laboratory specimens and a field chip seal section with different crumb rubber replacement ratios were investigated. Aggregate macrostructure, retention, and skid resistance were measured. The crumb rubber showed a remarkable performance in aggregate retention measured using the Vialit and Pennsylvania tests. The values of the mean texture depth of rubberized chip seal …

Learning-Based Analysis On The Exploitability Of Security Vulnerabilities, Adam Bliss
Learning-Based Analysis On The Exploitability Of Security Vulnerabilities, Adam Bliss
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a tool that uses machine learning techniques to make predictions about whether or not a given vulnerability will be exploited. Such a tool could help organizations such as electric utilities to prioritize their security patching operations. Three different models, based on a deep neural network, a random forest, and a support vector machine respectively, are designed and implemented. Training data for these models is compiled from a variety of sources, including the National Vulnerability Database published by NIST and the Exploit Database published by Offensive Security. Extensive experiments are conducted, including testing …
Wet Markets And Avian Influenza: Public Policy Decisions In Hong Kong, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.
Wet Markets And Avian Influenza: Public Policy Decisions In Hong Kong, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
After the emergence of H5N1 avian influenza in 1997 Hong Kong implemented a sophisticated system to regulate live poultry markets. While this system is well implemented and thorough, it also has limitations. The rise of H7N9 avian influenza (which is typically acquired through contact with poultry, including in live markets) makes this an appropriate time to revisit the ethical and practical issues related to this trade. Based on data from field observations of live markets in Hong Kong, and interviews with experts in the field, this paper recommends that the government of Hong Kong create a committee to examine the …
Acute Care Physical Therapy And Early Mobilization For A Patient Following Bilateral Staged Anterolateral Total Hip Arthroplasties: A Case Report, Rachel Claussen
Acute Care Physical Therapy And Early Mobilization For A Patient Following Bilateral Staged Anterolateral Total Hip Arthroplasties: A Case Report, Rachel Claussen
Case Report Posters
The purpose of this case report was to add to the limited literature describing acute care physical therapy (PT) management of patients receiving staged BTHA and to document both episodes of care. Primary hip osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of significant hip pain resulting in disability, joint stiffness, and loss of function. 42% of people with hip OA have it in both hips. Minimally invasive surgery using an anterolateral approach spares the hip external rotator muscles and posterior hip capsule. Staged bilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA): two separate surgical procedures during different hospitalizations. Lower risk of deep vein thrombosis …

The Educational Convergence Of The U.S. And Mexico: Challenges And Possibilities, Javier C. Tapia Ph.D., Carla Dorn
Journal of International and Global Studies
Globalization and NAFTA led to a greater economic and social integration between the U.S. and Mexico. This integration led to continued Mexican migration to the U.S. contributing to Hispanic growth in the U.S. with resulting shortages in bilingual professionals. Building from public anthropology, we developed exchange projects in education and health between the two countries to meet the needs of the Mexican population and foster greater understanding between the two societies. Notwithstanding current strained political relations between the two countries, we expect NAFTA to survive in a revised form continuing the economic and social interdependency for this region of North …

Learner Persistence In English For Speakers Of Other Languages (Esol) Programs, Elyse Waksman
Sustainability and Social Justice
Persistence – or continued, intense study – is a common challenge for adults in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs because of various institutional, situational, and dispositional factors. The current state and federal funding standards for adult ESOL programs are driven by human capital theory, and therefore most funders require demonstrated employment outcomes for students. These top-down objectives do not always align with English learners’ own motivations and goals. ESOL organizations must consider the complexities of these interacting forces to develop effective persistence strategies for their constituents. This case study of an ESOL organization in central Massachusetts is …
Assessment Of Drinking Water/Aquifer Vulnerability To Contamination By Natural Manganese And Anthropogenic Chemicals In The U.S., Ryan Kelly
Sustainability and Social Justice
Aquifers in the U.S. store groundwater used by many Americans every day for drinking eating, bathing and cleaning. These underground sources of water are vital to life and may be subject to contamination from both natural and anthropogenic pollution, including manganese (Mn) – especially shallow aquifers (<100 feet to bedrock). Natural sources of Mn are found in soils, surficial deposits, and bedrock, while anthropogenic contamination derives from landfills, waste facilities, or industries that use toxic materials. Pollutants like Mn raise concern because there is no policy in place to enforce regulation of Mn levels in water supplies based on limited information about health effects. Yet studies have shown elevated levels of Mn intake can lead to adverse human health effects. This study uses ArcMap to identify potential sources of Mn and/or toxics contamination in shallow U.S. aquifers based on geologic characteristics of a given aquifer source and proximity to waste sites. The results show approximately 2 million Americans may be at risk of consuming water with natural Mn contamination, and of those 2 million, close to 1.7 million are also vulnerable to additional toxics from anthropogenic waste. …100>

When Duty Calls: A Description Of Human Conflict And Occupational Therapy, Bryce Carsone, Jonathan Pitts
OCCUPATION: A Medium of Inquiry about Health through Occupation
As violent events escalate, even within the United States, it is imperative that occupational scientists have an in-depth understanding of the level one (descriptive) research implications, and occupational therapy practitioners are prepared to meet the needs of those impacted by conflict. This article aims to (a) describe the occupations of those affected by conflict (b) inform on current interventions through an intentional review (c) present the case for a call to action of occupational therapy practitioners. A general review of literature resulting in a description of occupations, identified four distinct populations: those who fight, caregivers, those who stay home, and …

OCCUPATION: A Medium of Inquiry about Health through Occupation
“Ism,” in general terms describes a practice that denotes oppression of a group based on the characteristics of its members: racism, sexism, and ageism, are the three types most commonly identified. “Isms” often impose limits on people, and while we have been aware of those limits at the macro level, we have been less aware of acts that happen at the level of the individual, the micro level. These acts, which are frequently heard and seen in the media, have personal, occupational, and health implications for those affected by them. The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness about …

No. 18: Gender Inequality, Poverty And Urban Household Food Security In Cape Town, Mary Caesar, Liam Riley
Hungry Cities Partnership
This discussion paper aims to advance our understanding of the gendered nature of urban household food security and how it is shaped by the relationships between internal household gender dynamics and external social factors of gender- and race-based inequalities. The manifestation of the gender inequalityfood security nexus at the household level is most evident in the different food-related roles and responsibilities adopted by women and men. These differences typically centre on tasks such as growing, purchasing, and preparing food as well as household members who undertake none of these responsibilities. Other gender-based household food security determinants include the gender of …

Drosophila suzukii is widely studied because of its status as a global pest of berries and soft fruits. Environmental conditions and access to food resources impact the physiology and ftness of D. suzukii; these factors could also affect dispersal. Flight mills are a convenient tool for measuring and comparing the fight performance of insects. In this study, two experiments examined the efects of diet and humidity on D. suzukii fight performance using custom-built fight mills, and a third experiment compared the energy reserves of D. suzukii flown or not flown on fight mills. Over all fight assays, the median fight …
