Student Papers, Posters & Projects

Research Goals & Questions

What’s missing? / Overarching goal:

  • Despite improving air quality as reported in the 2017 Community Health Assessment, asthma is still a major health problem in Philadelphia with some low-income communities affected significantly more than others.
  • In North and West Philadelphia where child asthma hospitalization rates are highest, there is a lack of air monitors in these affected communities.
  • Thus, the air quality information that is recorded on the city’s air monitors may not accurately reflect the air quality in these areas of Philadelphia with high asthma rates.

Questions:

  1. Does ground level air quality differ in underserved …

Reducing Protected Lands In A Hotspot Of Bee Biodiversity: Bees Of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Joseph S. Wilson, Matt Kelly, Olivia Messinger Carril

Biology Faculty Publications

Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is a federally protected area found in central southern Utah. Designated in 1996 by President William J. Clinton, it was recently reduced in size by President Donald J. Trump in a proclamation that turned the one large monument into three smaller ones. A long-term, standardized study of the bees had been conducted from 2000–2003, revealing 660 species. The bee communities of the area are characterized by being spatially heterogeneous; most of the bees occur in isolated areas, with only a few being both abundant and widespread. Here we examine what affect the recent resizing of the …

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

The anticancer activity of 8-hydroxyquinolines relies on complex formation with redox active copper and iron ions. Here we employ UV-visible spectrophotometry and EPR spectroscopy to compare proton dissociation and complex formation processes of the reference compound 8-hydroxyquinoline (Q-1) and three related Mannich bases to reveal possible correlations with biological activity. The studied derivatives harbor a CH2-N moiety at position 7 linked to morpholine (Q-2), piperidine (Q-3), and chlorine and fluorobenzylamino (Q-4) substituents. Solid phase structures of Q-3, Q-4·HCl·H2O, [(Cu(HQ-2)2)2]·(CH3OH)2·Cl4·(H2O)2, [Cu(Q-3)2]·Cl2 and [Cu(HQ-4)2(CH3OH)]·ZnCl4·CH3OH were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, the redox properties of the copper and iron complexes …

Global Availability Of Cancer Registry Data., Asif H. Siddiqui, Syed Nabeel Zafar

Medical College Documents

The availability of cancer registries has significantly enhanced cancer research, especially that related to cancer epidemiology, survival, interventions, and outcomes.1 However, by using publicly available sources, we aimed to map the availability and extent of cancer registry data in each country. We also aimed to test the association of registry data with metadata such as country income and national cancer-related policies. Data from 190 countries were collected from the WHO country cancer profiles.2 We sought data on the presence of an operational national cancer control policy, strategy, or action plan and the presence of a cancer registry. If those data …

Millenial Nurses Connecting With Patients In The 21st Century: A Phenomenological Studyh, Heather Caramanzana Dec 2018

Millenial Nurses Connecting With Patients In The 21st Century: A Phenomenological Studyh, Heather Caramanzana

Theses & Dissertations

Problem: Millennial nurses are the largest portion of the profession reporting burnout and compassion fatigue. The millennial generation was impacted by the explosion of technology in the late twentieth century. Constant technological stimulation heavily impacted developmental milestones. Early adolescence is a critical time for the abstract development of empathy and compassion. The millennial generation communicates through technology while performing more than one task in a short amount of time, known as multi-tasking. With less time spent at the bedside due to increases in administrative tasks, deficits in the development of empathy and expression of compassion may impact the development of …

Nanocapsules On A Lipid Membrane, Zain-Al-Abidin Shahid Kinnare Dec 2018

Nanocapsules On A Lipid Membrane, Zain-Al-Abidin Shahid Kinnare

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nanoparticle technology is gaining traction in many different industries, particularly in imaging and the medical industries, and thus it becomes increasing important to understand how particles will affect the body. This is why we want to look at the way nanoparticles interact with lipid membranes, since lipids play vital roles in biological processes such as stabilizing the distal airways in our lungs in low volume situations. Knowing how nanoparticles will interact with these lipids can give us insights into the potentials cytotoxicity of the particles, and how other agents, such as viruses act near/on a lipid membrane. In thisthesis, we …

Bureaucracy, Civil Society And Ideology In Latin America, Grazielli Faria Zimmer Santos, Paula Chies Schommer

Gobernar: The Journal of Latin American Public Policy and Governance

This essay analyzes how political and ideological changes affect public bureaucracy and its relationship with civil society regarding different strategies of openness to participation. We suggest a theoretical-conceptual framework to discuss aspects of the political situation in Latin America. First, we discuss the changes that occurred over time, in the state-civil society relationship, which strengthen the latter and amplify a discourse for more participatory democracy. The focus is the role of the public bureaucracy in mediating the relations among the several actors in society, and we examine the way different political and ideological strands influence how open to participation the …

Subaltern Communication For Social Change: The Struggles Of Manual Scavengers In India, Sheeva Yamunaprasad Dubey Dec 2018

Subaltern Communication For Social Change: The Struggles Of Manual Scavengers In India, Sheeva Yamunaprasad Dubey

Open Access Dissertations

This study aims to contribute to the theoretical discourse of Communication for Social Change (CSC) by expanding its theoretical scope beyond its current framework. The current theoretical framework of CSC is dualistic, with one-way modernization-diffusion paradigm on one end and the two-way dialogue-participation paradigm on the other. I argue that the understanding of both these paradigms in CSC discourse is based on planned and externally-driven approaches to social change. Such planned theoretical perspectives are insufficient for the purpose of explaining the autonomous struggles of marginalized, disadvantaged, and subaltern communities. I propose a third category for consideration in the theoretical framework …

Modeling The Effect Of Seasonality On The Transmission Of Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria In Hospitals With Environmental Contamination, Qimin Huang Dec 2018

Modeling The Effect Of Seasonality On The Transmission Of Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria In Hospitals With Environmental Contamination, Qimin Huang

Open Access Dissertations

Nosocomial infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria are a major threat to global public health today. In order to understand the diverse factors contributing to hospital acquired antibiotic resistant infections, we develop some mathematical models and address the theoretical, numerical and stochastic aspects of such models. In Chapter 2, both deterministic and stochastic mathematical models are developed to explore the roles that antibiotic exposure and environmental contamination play in the transmission dynamics of nosocomial infections in hospitals. Uncolonized patients without or with antibiotic exposure, colonized patients without or with antibiotic exposure, uncontaminated and contaminated health-care workers, and free-living Methicillin-resistant {\it …
