A View From Within: Notes And Insight From An Institutional Ethnography Of The National Commission For Natural Protected Areas In Tulum, Mexico, Maxwell J. Martin
Graduate Masters Theses
National parks and protected areas are an integral component of the Mexican government’s long-term natural resource conservation strategy. They comprise over 90 million hectares throughout the country. However, the establishment and upkeep of these protected areas often incites conflict both between and among local actors. From poachers taking protected resources to indigenous peoples exercising their rights, protected areas have become a source of political, economic, and moral contention across the globe. In addition, their effectiveness in either ecological or sustainable development terms has been ambiguous at best.
Tulum, Mexico exemplifies this dilemma. The site of pre-Columbian Mayan architecture, Tulum is …
Restaging World Literature In The Age Of Neoliberalism/Neocolonialism, Shaobo Xie
Restaging World Literature In The Age Of Neoliberalism/Neocolonialism, Shaobo Xie
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Restaging World Literature in the Age of Neoliberalism/Neocolonialism" Shaobo Xie argues that Goethe's notion of world literature spells a genuine universalism that contributes to resistance to neoliberal imperialism. In the age of neocolonialism/neoliberalism all conduct, and all spheres of human life are framed and measured by economic terms and metrics and neoliberalism both as a governing rationality and as an economic policy is penetrating into every part of the world. The politics that is really heterogeneous or external to the rule of neoliberal capitalism in the neocolonial global present consists in thinking towards new possibilities of organizing …

Is Simvastatin Associated With Oral Lichenoid Drug Reaction?, Kobkan Thongprasom
Is Simvastatin Associated With Oral Lichenoid Drug Reaction?, Kobkan Thongprasom
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Currently, various drugs have been found to induce many oral lesions. Some medications used to treat systemic diseases can affect the oral mucosa and induce lesions known as oral lichenoid drug reaction (OLDR). The diagnosis is made when the oral lesion errupted after the patient took a specific medication. However, diagnosis is challenging when a patient takes multiple medications and the onset of the eruption is unclear. OLDRs commonly cause severe pain in the oral cavity and affect the quality of life. Statins are widely used by patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) to lower blood cholesterol levels, decreasing the risk …

Comparison Of Low-Level Laser Versus Intra-Articular Corticosteroid Therapy For Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis In Rats, Nermeen Abubakr, Zeinab Amin Salem, Zoba Hassan Ali, Manal Safwat El Assaly
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Osteoarthritis (OA) is an increasingly common deteriorating disorder of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) for which there is an urgent need to improve the prevention and cure. Objectives: We aimed to compare low-level laser (LLL) against corticosteroids as an alternative treatment for TMJ-OA. Methods: Sixty rats with TMJ-OA were divided into OA (untreated), corticosteroid-treated, and LLL-treated groups. Animals were sacrificed at 1 and 4 weeks after treatment, and their TMJs were dissected for evaluation by histological analysis, histochemical analysis, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Statistical comparison was conducted using one-way analysis of variance. Results: Histopathological examination revealed degenerative changes and …
An Acoustic Monitoring Method For Assessing River Dolphin Presence And Changes In The Context Of Anthropogenic Development, Charles A. Muirhead
An Acoustic Monitoring Method For Assessing River Dolphin Presence And Changes In The Context Of Anthropogenic Development, Charles A. Muirhead
Graduate Masters Theses
Populations of river dolphins throughout Asia are in decline as a direct result of intensified anthropogenic activity along river systems. Water development projects, land use change, contamination, and intensified fishing practices are known factors contributing to the probable extinction of the Yangtze river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer) and declining populations of the South Asian river dolphin (Platanista gangetica spp.), Irrawady dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), and finless porpoise (Neophocaena a. asiaeorientalis). Although not yet as extensive, river system development in South America is following a similar path as that of Asia, with impacts on dolphin species likely to follow. Currently, the Amazon river …

Surveying Identities In Context: Race, Gender & Sexual Orientation ‘At Work’, Justine A. Bulgar-Medina
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers, practitioners and common practice have imputed a great deal of power onto categories of social identity (e.g. race, sexual orientation, gender, religion). It common practice to collect demographic and identifying information on the categories to which we belong in settings ranging from the Census to the online shopping profile. Moreover, we have come to expect that this information will be used to make meaningful decisions on government program funding, targeted marketing, college recruitment and so much more. We also know that minority identities have a long history of negatively impacting individuals in employment, housing and other realms of daily …

A personalized approach based on a patient's or pathogen’s unique genomic sequence is the foundation of precision medicine. Genomic findings must be robust and reproducible, and experimental data capture should adhere to findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) guiding principles. Moreover, effective precision medicine requires standardized reporting that extends beyond wet-lab procedures to computational methods. The BioCompute framework (https://w3id.org/biocompute/1.3.0) enables standardized reporting of genomic sequence data provenance, including provenance domain, usability domain, execution domain, verification kit, and error domain. This framework facilitates communication and promotes interoperability. Bioinformatics computation instances that employ the BioCompute framework are easily relayed, repeated …

Legal And Non-Legal Agricultural Practices: Toward A Sustainable Future In Malaysia’S Palm Oil Industry, Hanim Kamaruddin, Harlida Abdul Wahab, Haslinda Mohd Anuar
Indonesia Law Review
As a major global producer of palm oil products, Malaysia is familiar with criticisms of its palm oil cultivation, poor agricultural practices and decisions during the planting process. Loss of biodiversity and deforestation resulting from unsustainable palm oil practices are perceived as major setbacks for the environment in Malaysia. However, at the same time as Malaysia stands committed to the palm oil industry and its contribution to job growth and poverty reduction, the relevant stakeholders are creating strategies for sustainable production. Together with relevant environmental laws to prevent and control impacts from climate change, loss of biodiversity and deforestation, environmental …

Women Rights Fulfillment As The Victim Of Gross Human Rights Violation: Urgency For The Sexual Violence Eradication Bill, Ani Purwanti, Rian Adhivira Prabowo
Indonesia Law Review
Heretofore in Indonesia, cases of gross violation of human rights have faced an indefinite stagnation of justice. Although the Indonesian government has ratified international human rights conventions and enacted its own system of human rights law, such laws have proven unable to fulfill the restoration of justice toward these victims in two particular aspects: convictions against the perpetrators and reparations for the victims. This article focuses on fulfilling the rights of women victims of past gross human rights violations. It will be based on normative legal research by which the existing laws are critically analyzed in order to expose the …

Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated Herpesvirus (KSHV) is the etiologic agent of several human malignancies, particularly Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS), which preferentially arise in immunocompromised patients such as HIV+ subpopulation while still lacking of effective therapeutic options. We recently found that the ribonucleotide reductase (RR) subunit M2 is potentially regulated by the key oncogenic HGF/c-MET pathway in KSHV-related lymphoma cells. One of RR inhibitor, 3-aminopyridine-2-carboxaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (3-AP) effectively induced apoptosis of KSHV+ lymphomas and suppressed tumor progression . In the current study, we found that 3-AP treatment selectively inhibited the proliferation of KSHV-infected endothelial cells, the major cellular components of KS, through inducing DNA …

Sago As An Environmentally Sustainable Food Resource In The Climate Change Era, Saptarining Wulan
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
This current study is focused on measuring the life cycle assessment of the sustainability of sago palm cultivated on peatlands. A previous theory suggested that while food production tends to increase arithmetically, population tends to increase naturally at a faster geometric rate that may cause hunger and/or starvation in the future generation. Land is a limited resource, and to address the rapidly increasing population, peatland cultivation has become popular as a result in the recent times. Rice is the main staple food in Indonesia with a consumption of >90 kg/capita/year. Sago palm is an indigenous plant that abundantly grows in …
Optimization Of Transportation Of Municipal Solid Waste From Resource To Intermediate Treatment Facility With Nearest Neighbour Method (Study On Six Sub Sub District In Dki Jakarta Province), Fahmi Hermawan
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Population growth is always accompanied by an increase in waste generation. The issue of the increasing volume of waste becomes crucial if it is not balanced through proper handling efforts. The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta through the Environment Agency of DKI Jakarta Province seeks to address the waste problem by constructing alternative facilities in the city’s waste processing facilities. The processing facilities referred to here are the Waste Power Generation or Intermediate Treatment Facility. The operational sustainability and the production output of the facility are influenced by the amount of waste supply as its raw material and are also …
