Culture As A System Of Shared Meaning: Exploring Intercultural Leadership Identity Through Practical Application, Emily Patrick Dec 2018

Culture As A System Of Shared Meaning: Exploring Intercultural Leadership Identity Through Practical Application, Emily Patrick

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

This explorative, inductive, applied research study aims to examine the intersection of intercultural communication of values and leadership identities and capacities. Using existing and guiding cultural value theories, experiential learning techniques, meaning making ideologies, and adult learning principles, a two-and-a-half-hour intensive workshop was designed for a group of twenty-eight leadership and entrepreneurship students, predominantly Mexican nationals at the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico, City. Specifically, the study demonstrates how culture affects leadership identities and capacities using the agreed-upon symbols, rituals, heroes and values that make up each culture’s perspectives, practices or applications of culture in everyday life. The expressed values …

Christian Guana-Jarrin, Christian Guana-Jarrin

Fall 2018

Outside the weather is gloomy. Summer has given way to a cold and cloudy fall day, yet my office is filled with exuberance and joy. Christian Guana-Jarrin, an MDiv student here at Andrews, was one of the first two missionaries to serve Cuba after 55 years of doors being shut to long-term Christian missionaries. He has been sitting across from me for the last 30 minutes testifying to what God has accomplished in his life and in Cuba over that past year. Christian’s face is beaming as he explains the acronym CDAR to me. “C” stands for committed, and “dar” …

Change In Brain Volume And Cortical Thickness After Behavioral And Surgical Weight Loss Intervention, Cara Bohon, Allan Geliebter Dec 2018

Change In Brain Volume And Cortical Thickness After Behavioral And Surgical Weight Loss Intervention, Cara Bohon, Allan Geliebter

Lander College of Arts and Sciences Publications and Research

Obesity is associated with reduced cortical thickness and brain volume, which may be related to poor nutrition. Given that brain atrophy in anorexia nervosa recovers with nutritional improvements and weight gain, it is worth examining how brain structure changes at the other end of the weight spectrum with weight loss. Thus, this study aimed to examine change in cortical thickness and brain volume in 47 patients with severe obesity who participated in no treatment, behavioral weight loss, or bariatric surgery. T1-weighted MRI scans were conducted pre-treatment and approximately four months later. Measures of cortical thickness, gray matter volume, and white …

**TW: Sexual Assault

Earlier in the semester, many students and professors gathered in the Junction from 10 am until well into the evening to watch as Christine Blasey Ford and now Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh were each questioned at length. In all that has happened in the past two years, the looming feeling that spread through campus on this day was the closest rival to that which invaded campus on the morning of November 9th, 2016. Prosecutorial Misconduct: Typologies And Need For Policy Reform, Rylee Broyles, Tamara J. Lynn Dec 2018

Prosecutorial Misconduct: Typologies And Need For Policy Reform, Rylee Broyles, Tamara J. Lynn

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

A gross manifestation of injustice within the criminal justice system, warranting policy development to correct, is the issue of prosecutorial misconduct. There are numerous reasons why misconduct occurs and oftentimes overlooked within the courts. Action must be taken to both prevent and rectify such wrongdoings committed by those whom are presumed to be the most virtuous of our justice system. Future policy action is paramount to the constitutionality of criminal proceedings and the abatement of prosecutorial misconduct in every capacity. The implementation of austere policies would positively impact all criminal defendants whom cross the threshold of a courthouse.

Mean-Variance Qtl Mapping Identifies Novel Qtl For Circadian Activity And Exploratory Behavior In Mice., Robert W Corty, Vivek Kumar, Lisa M Tarantino, Joseph S Takahashi, William Valdar

Faculty Research 2018

We illustrate, through two case studies, that "mean-variance QTL mapping"-QTL mapping that models effects on the mean and the variance simultaneously-can discover QTL that traditional interval mapping cannot. Mean-variance QTL mapping is based on the double generalized linear model, which extends the standard linear model used in interval mapping by incorporating not only a set of genetic and covariate effects for mean but also set of such effects for the residual variance. Its potential for use in QTL mapping has been described previously, but it remains underutilized, with certain key advantages undemonstrated until now. In the first case study, a …

Counseling Sexual Assaulted Adolescents And Young Adults, Luann Gregorich Dec 2018

Counseling Sexual Assaulted Adolescents And Young Adults, Luann Gregorich

Counselor Education Capstones

Sexual assault affects men, women and children in the United States. Defining sexual assault and various forms of rape can help to formulate knowledge of the context of assaults that victims experience. There are certain populations that are at risk for sexual victimization. College aged individuals are at a higher risk for sexual assault than any other age group. There are four main risk factors for this age group that contribute to the vulnerability of assault. The impact of assault and rape on survivors can include emotional, physical and psychological issues. For clinicians, evidence -based treatments, understanding risk factors, and …

Identity, Values And Norms Of East Africa’S Youth, Alex Awiti, Caleb Orwa Dec 2018

Identity, Values And Norms Of East Africa’S Youth, Alex Awiti, Caleb Orwa

East Africa Institute

With a median age estimated at 18 years, East Africa is one of the youngest regions in the world. However, relatively little research has been conducted to understand how they identify themselves and what values and norms shape or influence them. About 7,000 individuals between the age of 18 and 35 were interviewed in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda. Youth constructed their identity along four dimensions; youth (age-associated); nationality; faith; family. However, country, religion, gender and age influenced the ordering of identity. With the exception of Rwanda, East African a tolerance for rule violation and corruption was prevalent among East …
