An Evaluation Of Extended Producer Responsibility (Epr) As A Policy Option For Compostable Plastics In California, Amy Franz

Master's Projects and Capstones

This research project evaluates Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in California as a viable option to address the end-of-life management challenges identified for compostable plastics. The evaluation is done in three ways (1) review the main challenges identified for managing compostable plastics against the existing California EPR laws for mercury thermostats, agricultural pesticide containers, carpet, paint and mattresses to look for overlap in issues EPR has been used to address, (2) review compostable plastics in the context of the Product Selection Criteria used by California, (3) Look at the California Framework for setting up an EPR program to lay out what …

Financial Analysis And Valuation Of Nuvera Communications, Inc., Tina Scheidecker

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects

The Financial Analysis and Valuation of Nuvera Communications, Inc. uses the discounted free cash flow at the weighted average cost of capital model to forecast the intrinsic value for Nuvera Communications. Nuvera Communications competes in a highly competitive, innovative, and volatile industry which may explain why earnings and price per share may fluctuate from year to year for some companies. In the PDF provided, the model found the intrinsic value per share of Nuvera was below that of the current market price per share, suggesting a current over valuation of Nuvera's stock. This conclusion was supported by using the Relative …

Subject Level Clustering Using A Negative Binomial Model For Small Transcriptomic Studies., Qian Li, Janelle R. Noel-Macdonnell, Devin C. Koestler, Ellen L. Goode, Brooke L. Fridley

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Unsupervised clustering represents one of the most widely applied methods in analysis of high-throughput 'omics data. A variety of unsupervised model-based or parametric clustering methods and non-parametric clustering methods have been proposed for RNA-seq count data, most of which perform well for large samples, e.g. N ≥ 500. A common issue when analyzing limited samples of RNA-seq count data is that the data follows an over-dispersed distribution, and thus a Negative Binomial likelihood model is often used. Thus, we have developed a Negative Binomial model-based (NBMB) clustering approach for application to RNA-seq studies.

RESULTS: We have developed a Negative …

Parallelism In One Of Hillary Clinton's Speeches: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Saleema Abdulzahra Almehmdawi Dec 2018

Parallelism In One Of Hillary Clinton's Speeches: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Saleema Abdulzahra Almehmdawi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Parallelism is a linguistic phenomenon. It refers to the use of the same pattern of words for two or more ideas having the same degree of importance arranged in successful lines and in a balanced manner, enabling the reader to understand the meaning or grasp the relationship between ideas. Stylistically, parallelism, with its different types, is used by politicians to persuade audience to sympathize with their views, and make their speech more memorable. This paper studies parallelism as a rhetorical device from a critical discourse perspective following van Dijk's (1993) socio-cognitive approach and his notion of Ideological Square (2006a). The …

Metabolic Dependencies In Pancreatic Cancer., Ali Vaziri-Gohar, Mahsa Zarei, Jonathan R. Brody, Jordan M. Winter

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a highly lethal cancer with a long-term survival rate under 10%. Available cytotoxic chemotherapies have significant side effects, and only marginal therapeutic efficacy. FDA approved drugs currently used against PDA target DNA metabolism and DNA integrity. However, alternative metabolic targets beyond DNA may prove to be much more effective. PDA cells are forced to live within a particularly severe microenvironment characterized by relative hypovascularity, hypoxia, and nutrient deprivation. Thus, PDA cells must possess biochemical flexibility in order to adapt to austere conditions. A better understanding of the metabolic dependencies required by PDA to survive and …

Corporate Political Strategies And Return Predictability, Chansog Kim, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Jung Chul Park Dec 2018

Corporate Political Strategies And Return Predictability, Chansog Kim, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Jung Chul Park

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

We assess whether observable corporate political strategies can serve as channels of value relevant political information flow into stock prices and form the basis for profitable return predictability strategies. We document that returns of politically connected firms’ stocks lead those of their non-connected peers, suggesting that information shocks associated with new policies and other political developments become evident first in the stock prices of firms that pursue political strategies and then, with delay, in those of similar non-connected firms.

Usefulness Of Baseline Statin Therapy In Non-Obstructive Coronary Artery Disease By Coronary Computed Tomographic Angiography: From The Confirm (Coronary Ct Angiography Evaluation For Clinical Outcomes: An International Multicenter) Study, Ricardo Cury

All Publications

BACKGROUND:

The extent to which the presence and extent of subclinical atherosclerosis by coronary computed tomography angiography influences a potential mortality benefit of statin is unknown. We evaluated the relationship between statin therapy, mortality, and subclinical atherosclerosis.

METHODS:

In the CONFIRM study, patients with normal or non-obstructive plaque (<50% diameter stenosis) for whom data on baseline statin use was available were included. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) was quantified using the Agatston score. The extent of non-obstructive coronary atherosclerosis was quantified using the segment involvement score (SIS). 8,016 patients were followed for a median of 2.5 years with analysis of all-cause mortality and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) including all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, target vessel revascularization, and coronary artery disease-related hospitalization.

RESULTS:

1.2% of patients experienced all-cause mortality. Patients not on baseline statin therapy had a stepwise increased risk of all-cause mortality by CAC (relative to CAC = 0; CAC 1-99: hazard ratio [HR] 1.65, CAC 100-299: HR 2.19, and CAC≥300: HR 2.98) or SIS (relative to SIS = 0; SIS 1: …

ABSTRACT

Older adults often require short-term nursing home care after an acute hospital stay to receive skilled nursing or rehabilitation services. Rehospitalization after a skilled nursing facility (SNF) admission is a potential indicator of poor nursing home quality that is associated with substantial risks of complications and increased costs of care. This study examined resident and facility factors associated with 30-day rehospitalizations during a one-year study period from SNFs in New Mexico. The Minimum Data Set 3.0 was used to explore resident factors and Nursing Home Compare data was used for facility factors. Among residents admitted to the SNF from …

Lower Limb Joint Angle Variability And Dimensionality Are Different In Stairmill Climbing And Treadmill Walking, Peter C. Raffalt, Srikant Vallabhajosula, Jessica Renz, Mukul Mukherjee, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

The present study tested if the quadratic relationship which exists between stepping frequency and gait dynamics in walking can be generalized to stairmill climbing. To accomplish this, we investigated the joint angle dynamics and variability during continuous stairmill climbing at stepping frequencies both above and below the preferred stepping frequency (PSF). Nine subjects performed stairmill climbing at 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120% PSF and treadmill walking at preferred walking speed during which sagittal hip, knee and ankle angles were extracted. Joint angle dynamics were quantified by the largest Lyapunov exponent (LyE) and correlation dimension (CoD). Joint angle variability was …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Bacterial and eukaryotic nuclear RNA polymerases (RNAPs) cap RNA with the oxidized and reduced forms of the metabolic effector nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, NAD+ and NADH, using NAD+ and NADH as non-canonical initiating nucleotides for transcription initiation. Here, we show that mitochondrial RNAPs (mtRNAPs) cap RNA with NAD+ and NADH, and do so more efficiently than nuclear RNAPs. Direct quantitation of NAD+- and NADH-capped RNA demonstrates remarkably high levels of capping in vivo: up to ~60% NAD+ and NADH capping of yeast mitochondrial transcripts, and up to ~15% NAD+ capping of human mitochondrial transcripts. The capping efficiency is determined by promoter …

Financial Well-Being In Low- And Moderate-Income Households: How Does It Compare To The General Population?, Sicong Sun, Olga Kondratjeva, Stephen P. Roll, Mathieu Despard, Michal Grinstein-Weiss

Social Policy Institute Research

Research has increasingly shed light on the precariousness of many households’ financial situations. For example, a large national survey showed that 41 percent of adults lack sufficient liquidity to cover even a modest $400 emergency without taking on debt or selling an asset;1 a problem that is exacerbated for lower-income households.2 Compounding this issue is the fact that financial shocks, such as the loss of income or a major car repair, are common; 60 percent of U.S. households reported a shock in the prior year at a median cost of $2,000.3

Strategic Logistics Outsourcing In Humanitarian Supply Chain: A Fuzzy Ahp Approach, S Roh, H-M Jang

Plymouth Business School

This research paper investigates an under-researched topic, logistics outsourcing decision issue in the humanitarian supply chain outsourcing environment. Specifically, this research aims to identify the important factors for selecting third-party logistics(3PL) service providers in a humanitarian supply chain. This is based on literature review and interviews from logistics managers in a humanitarian sector which was evaluated with a multiple-criteria decision-making(MCDM) method called the analytical hierarchy process(AHP) under fuzzy environment. Through the use of the AHP, the relative importance of individual criteria was determined. Fuzzy-theory application of the linguistic values handles the vagueness and subjectivity of decisions. The findings of this …

Using A Robot Peer To Encourage The Production Of Spatial Concepts In A Second Language, Cd Wallbridge, Den Berghe R Van, Hernandez D Garcia, J Kanero, S Lemaignan, C Edmunds, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We conducted a study with 25 children to investigate the efectiveness of a robot measuring and encouraging production of spatial concepts in a second language compared to a human experimenter. Productive vocabulary is often not measured in second language learning, due to the diiculty of both learning and assessing productive learning gains. We hypothesized that a robot peer may help assessing productive vocabulary. Previous studies on foreign language learning have found that robots can help to reduce language anxiety, leading to improved results. In our study we found that a robot is able to reach a similar performance to the …

Weak Iron Oxidation By Sulfobacillus Thermosulfidooxidans Maintains A Favorable Redox Potential For Chalcopyrite Bioleaching, S Christel, M Herold, S Bellenberg, A Buetti-Dinh, Et Al

School of Biomedical Sciences

Bioleaching is an emerging technology, describing the microbially assisted dissolution of sulfidic ores that provides a more environmentally friendly alternative to many traditional metal extraction methods, such as roasting or smelting. Industrial interest is steadily increasing and today, circa 15–20% of the world’s copper production can be traced back to this method. However, bioleaching of the world’s most abundant copper mineral chalcopyrite suffers from low dissolution rates, often attributed to passivating layers, which need to be overcome to use this technology to its full potential. To prevent these passivating layers from forming, leaching needs to occur at a low oxidation/reduction …

Brazil As A Leader In The Latin American Refugees' Regime, Daniel Jatoba, Patricia Nabuco Martuscelli

The Journal of International Relations, Peace Studies, and Development

The article presents an exploratory study of Brazil´s role in the consolidation of the Latin American refugees’ regime. Our analytical perspective considers that there is a regional refugees’ regime in Latin America, one gradually constituted since the conference in Cartagena in 1984, when the countries of this region established principles, norms, rules, and decision-making procedures related to the refugees’ issue, including in the existing regime an expanded concept of refugees, more encompassing than the UN Convention’s concept (1951). Moreover, and having examined different sources of evidence, including a set of experts’ judgments and organizational reports, we argue that the country …
