Network Pharmacology-Guided Development Of A Novel Integrative Regimen To Prevent Acute Graft-Vs.-Host Disease, Ming Lyu, Zhengcan Zhou, Xiaoming Wang, Hong Lv, Mei Wang, Guixiang Pan, Yuefei Wang, Guanwei Fan, Xiumei Gao, Benjamin Feng, Yan Zhu
Peer Reviewed Articles
Lapses in the graft-vs.-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis and side effects of current standard care following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) call for novel regimens. Traditional approaches targeting T cells showed limited success in preventing acute GVHD (aGVHD). System medicine showed promising results treating complex diseases such as sepsis and multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Adapting established network pharmacology analysis methods, we aimed to develop novel integrative regimens to prevent aGVHD. Our network pharmacology analysis predicted that Xuebijing injection (XBJ) targets a series of key node proteins in aGVHD network. It also unveiled that Salviae miltiorrhizae (Danshen), an herb in Xuebijing …

Assessing Elements Of Urban Public Space Under Elevated Freeways: Application To The West End’S Dallas, Adrianna E. Tobias
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
This thesis investigates the revitalization of spaces found underneath elevated freeways into valued urban public spaces. These spaces are created when elevated freeways carve through dense city centers. Literature addressing the history of freeways, their sometimes-destructive impact on the urban fabric of cities and the unique role elevated freeways place in this destruction is reviewed. A brief review of an unintended consequence of elevated freeways as well as the impacts elevated freeways have had in Texas is also reviewed. The research employs three methods which rely on the collecting and synthesizing of data from literature reviews, case studies, site observation …
Education Reform And Detroit’S Right To Literacy Litigation, Kristine L. Bowman
Education Reform And Detroit’S Right To Literacy Litigation, Kristine L. Bowman
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
Ongoing education reform litigation arising out of Detroit, Michigan presents an innovative claim: Children have an unenumerated federal constitutional right of access to literacy. On June 29, 2018, the district court granted defendants’ motion to dismiss. The case is now on appeal to the Sixth Circuit and is expected to be argued in the first half of 2019. This litigation has already broken new ground and, regardless of the ultimate outcome, it is valuable because it invites us to revisit fundamental questions about rights, remedies, and the role of courts in education reform.

Subjective Cognitive Functioning Relates To Parenting In Mothers With Chronic Pain, Denae S. Clohessy
Subjective Cognitive Functioning Relates To Parenting In Mothers With Chronic Pain, Denae S. Clohessy
University Honors Theses
Individuals with chronic pain commonly report problems with daily cognitive functioning. This feeling of decreased subjective cognitive functioning (SCF) can be distressing due to its impact on daily life and relationships. Children of parents with chronic pain are at an increased risk for the development of chronic pain and related impairment and it is possible that lower parental SCF could increase this risk. Specifically, mothers with lower SCF may have difficulty completing day-to-day caregiving activities as well as responding flexibly to children’s behaviors. The present study focused on examining the impact of SCF on parenting in mothers with chronic pain. …
Adolescent Female Substance Abuse: Risk And Resiliency Factors, Mary Bemker
Adolescent Female Substance Abuse: Risk And Resiliency Factors, Mary Bemker
Dissertations
Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) abuse is a major social and health concern for adolescent females. For the first time, female use patterns are converging with male patterns among U.S. adolescents. Despite evidence that gender differences could be associated with ATOD origin and precipitating factors, little attention has been directed to female adolescents and ATOD use. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to explore the experiences of adolescent females in relation to ATOD risk and resiliency factors present in their lives. This investigation used the Neuman systems model as its theoretical framework. Grounded theory methodology was employed to …

Internet Based Interventions For Improving Mental Health On College Campuses: A Scoping Review Of Ibis, Caceti Dobrowolski
Internet Based Interventions For Improving Mental Health On College Campuses: A Scoping Review Of Ibis, Caceti Dobrowolski
Honors Theses
BACKGROUND Over the past decade, Internet Based Interventions (IBI) have emerged as a possible mental health approach, reported to reduce cost and provide access to needed services. There is a dearth of literature that clearly defines the scope and components of IBIs and its efficacy. Moreover, little is known about the efficacy of IBI for college students, a population that reportedly underutilizes mental health services.
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this scoping review was to assess the efficacy of IBI as a mental health intervention for college students.
METHODS Three databases were used to initially identify 400 studies and through the …
Psychological Effects And Treatment Of An Injury On An Athlete: Suggested Treatment Plan For Athletic Trainers And Physical Therapist, Odell Miller
Honors Theses
Injuries that force athletes to lose participation in their sport and or training have a tremendous impact on their mental health. Mental health issues can be detrimental, but often times go unnoticed. For example in 2010, Kenny McKinley, a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, was found dead after killing himself with a gun. After suffering a knee injury, he had become progressively depressed. Investigators reported that there are statements saying that McKinley didn’t know what he would do without football. According to NCAA’s Sports Science Institute (2017), the psychological response to injury can trigger mental health issues such as: …

Precision oncologic medicine is an emerging approach for cancer treatment that has recently taken giant steps in solid clinical practice. Recent advances in molecular diagnostics that can analyze the individual tumor's variability in genes have provided greater understanding and additional strategies to treat cancers. Although tumors can be tested by several molecular methods, the use of next-generation sequencing (NGS) has greatly facilitated our understanding of pediatric cancer and identified additional therapeutic opportunities. Pediatric tumors have a different genetic make-up, with a fewer number of actionable targets than adult tumors. Nevertheless, precision oncology in the pediatric population has greatly improved the …

Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Overview And Central Nervous System Applications With A Focus On Neurodegeneration, Ryan A. Cloyd, Shon A. Koren, Jose F. Abisambra
Physiology Faculty Publications
Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) rose to prominence in the 1990s as a sensitive approach to high contrast imaging. Following the discovery of manganese conductance through calcium-permeable channels, MEMRI applications expanded to include functional imaging in the central nervous system (CNS) and other body systems. MEMRI has since been employed in the investigation of physiology in many animal models and in humans. Here, we review historical perspectives that follow the evolution of applied MRI research into MEMRI with particular focus on its potential toxicity. Furthermore, we discuss the more current in vivo investigative uses of MEMRI in CNS investigations and …

Ammonia gas sensors are very essential in many industries and everyday life. However, their complicated fabrication process, severe environmental fabrication requirements and desorption of residual ammonia molecules result in high cost and hinder their market acceptance. Here, laser direct writing is used to fabricate three parallel porous 3D graphene lines on a polyimide (PI) tape to simply construct an ammonia gas sensor. The middle one works as an ammonia sensing element and the other two on both sides work as heaters to improve the desorption performance of the sensing element to ammonia gas molecules. The graphene lines were characterized by …

Implementation Of A Delirium Protocol In A Community Living Center: A Short And Long-Term Care Facility, Marguerite C. Burch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Delirium is the most frequent complication associated with hospitalizations of older adults and is responsible for 17.5 million hospital days at a cost of more than $6 billion each year. It is estimated delirium occurs in approximately 14 – 56% of all hospitalized elderly patients. Outcomes associated with delirium in the adult population are prolonged hospital lengths of stay, increased mortality, and post-hospitalization cognitive impairment. Hospitalized patients diagnosed with delirium may be discharged to rehabilitation centers or nursing homes for recuperation, and/or for permanent residence.
Delirium is often misdiagnosed because the presentation of signs and symptoms mimic other medical conditions …

The prevalence of substance use disorders remains high in the United States and healthcare professionals are largely ill-equipped to intervene with patients experiencing substance misuse or use disorders. To address this issue, substance abuse intervention curricula such as Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) are being integrated into university healthcare programs through the use of simulation to provide healthcare students with the necessary skills to address patient substance use. Teaching SBIRT with simulation provides students with an authentic clinical environment in which to learn and refine clinical skills. Simulation also supports reflective practice by providing an opportunity for …

One-Sentence, One-Word: An Innovative Data Collection Method To Enhance Exploration Of The Lived Experiences, Shannon L. Sibbald, Dylan Brennan, Aleksandra Zecevic
The Qualitative Report
Experienced-based methods are growing in popularity and are increasingly being utilized in a variety of research programs and investigations. They enable researchers and participants to co-design research strategies and outcomes and subsequently propose solutions to potential problems in the partnership. By applying an experience-based methods lens, we sought to augment traditional qualitative interviewing methodologies by using a novel method we named “one-sentence, one-word” (1S1W). To apply our 1S1W method, we used a phenomenological study that examined the relationship between the risk of falling and the desire of master athletes to engage in competitive sports. Participants reflected and recorded their subjective …
Organizing The Three Forms Of Qualitative Inquiry: A Book Review Of Qualitative Inquiry – Thematic, Narrative And Arts-Based Perspectives, Umair Majid
The Qualitative Report
In this book review, I examine the structure, form, content, and purpose of Qualitative Inquiry: Thematic, Narrative and Arts-Based Perspectives by Lynn Butler-Kisber. This book aims to augment the teaching and learning of investigators engaging in qualitative inquiry. First, I explicate my positionality and reflexivity to contextualize the approach of this book review. Following this discussion, I analyze the book’s structure and content by comparing the alignment between the background, exemplars, and strategies with the intended purpose of the book. I conclude this book review with a summary of its benefits to novice investigators.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in antenatal and neonatal care, preterm birth remains a leading cause of neurological disabilities in children. Infants born prematurely, particularly those delivered at the earliest gestational ages, commonly demonstrate increased rates of impairment across multiple neurodevelopmental domains. Indeed, the current literature establishes that preterm birth is a leading risk factor for cerebral palsy, is associated with executive function deficits, increases risk for impaired receptive and expressive language skills, and is linked with higher rates of co-occurring attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and autism spectrum disorders. These same infants also demonstrate elevated rates of aberrant cerebral structural and …

The dopaminergic hypothesis of schizophrenia (SZ) postulates that positive symptoms of SZ, in particular psychosis, are due to disturbed neurotransmission via the dopamine (DA) receptor D2 (DRD2). However, DA is a reactive molecule that yields various oxidative species, and thus has important non-receptor-mediated effects, with empirical evidence of cellular toxicity and neurodegeneration. Here we examine non-receptor-mediated effects of DA on gene co-expression networks and its potential role in SZ pathology. Transcriptomic profiles were measured by RNA-seq in B-cell transformed lymphoblastoid cell lines from 514 SZ cases and 690 controls, both before and after exposure to DA ex vivo (100 μM). …

Meta-Modeling Constructs For Requirements Reuse (Rr): Software Requirements Patterns, Variability And Traceability, Badamasi Imam Ya’U, Azlin Nordin, Norsaremah Salleh
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Reuse is a fundamental activity, which increases quality and productivity of software products. Reuse of software artifacts, such as requirements, architectures, and codes can be employed at any developmental stage of software. However, reuse at a higher level of abstraction, for instance at requirements level, provides greater benefits in software development than when applied at lower level of abstraction for example at coding level. To achieve full benefits of reuse, a systematic approach and appropriate strategy need to be followed. Although several reuse approaches are reported in the literature, these approaches lack a key strategy to synergize some essential drivers …
