Introduction: Ambulation can be used to monitor the healing of lower extremity fractures. However, the ambulatory behavior of tibia fracture patients remains unknown due to an inability to continuously quantify ambulation outside of the clinic. The goal of this study was to design and validate an algorithm to assess ambulation in tibia fracture patients using the ambulatory tibial load analysis system during recovery, outside of the clinic. Methods Data were collected from a cyclic tester, 14 healthy volunteers performing a 2-min walk test on the treadmill, and 10 tibia fracture patients who wore the ambulatory tibial load analysis system during …
An Engineered Fit-For-Purpose Polymer Nanocomposite Seal Repair Material For Wellbores, Moneeb Genedy
An Engineered Fit-For-Purpose Polymer Nanocomposite Seal Repair Material For Wellbores, Moneeb Genedy
Civil Engineering ETDs
Seal integrity of wellbores has become of significant interest due to repeated leakage and spill incidents occurring worldwide that jeopardize both human health and the environment in addition to causing significant economic burden. This is attributed to the fact that wellbores intersecting geographical formations contain potential leakage pathways. The cement-steel and cement-rock formation interfaces are recognized as two critical leakage pathways.
A seal repair material that has good bond strength with both steel and rock formations in addition to the ability to completely fill thin microcracks is needed to restore the seal integrity of wellbores. In this research, engineered polymer …
Mothers’ Voices: A Narrative Study Of The Experiences And Perspectives Of Mothers Raising School Age Children With Disabilities In One Of Zimbabwe’S Urban Areas, Emillia Masaka
Special Education ETDs
This narrative study examined (1) how women raising school age children with disabilities in one of Zimbabwe’s urban areas, articulated and conceptualized (a) their children’s disabilities and (b) their experiences as mothers of children with disabilities and (2) how their social status, marital status, age, ethnicity, and/or race intersected with their experiences of raising children with disabilities. A localized understanding of how mothers view their children’s disabilities was important because it influences results of any interventions their children might receive. Eight participants volunteered to have three interviews each, with me. Utilizing the social construction of disability, intersectionality, and thematic analysis …

Gradubique: An Academic Transcript Database Using Blockchain Architecture, Thinh Nguyen
Master's Projects
Blockchain has been widely adopted in the last few years even though it is in its infancy. The first well-known application built on blockchain technology was Bitcoin, which is a decentralized and distributed ledger to record crypto-currency transactions. All of the transactions in Bitcoin are anonymously transferred and validated by participants in the network. Bitcoin protocol and its operations are so reliable that technologists have been inspired to enhance blockchain technologies and deploy it outside of the crypto-currency world. The demand for private and non-crypto-currency solutions have surged among consortiums because of the security and fault tolerant features of blockchain. …
Understanding Women´S Empowerment Through Indigenous Epistemologies: An Alternative Approach To Development?, Melissa Klara Vonimary Søvik
Understanding Women´S Empowerment Through Indigenous Epistemologies: An Alternative Approach To Development?, Melissa Klara Vonimary Søvik
Master's Theses
Development projects that aim at empowering women have gained popularity among many actors and institutions in the field of development for their capacity to contribute in development and economic growth. Nevertheless, the concept of empowerment has also gained critics from various stands claiming it to be too technical, and not taking into account social relations in contexts where other epistemologies exist. It is necessary to adapt these kind of terms taking into account local world-views. This thesis explores the dynamics of women's empowerment in Tzeltal Mayan communities in Chiapas, Mexico. It aims at understanding the way empowerment is manifested in …
Overcoming Barriers For The Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practice Through Journal Clubs, Regina Thomas
Overcoming Barriers For The Implementation Of Evidence-Based Practice Through Journal Clubs, Regina Thomas
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Many barriers exist at a 134-bed rural hospital in southern Illinois that hinder generation, evaluation, and implementation of evidence-based research into practice. This DNP project was completed through a phase approach utilizing a modified version of Kotter’s Model of Change, the RNcEBP Survey to self-rate individual confidence in the EBP process, and the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice to facilitate implementation of journal clubs. The RNcEBP survey revealed that nurses were familiar with the concept of EBP, have positive attitudes, and are confident that EBP changes can improve patient outcomes, but lack experience in evaluating literature to support implementing evidence-based …

Employing Natural History Collections In The Aid Of Conservation: Streamlining An Approach To Model Species Distributions En Masse For The Preservation Of Biodiversity, Alice Fornari
Master's Projects and Capstones
Using species distribution models (SDMs) in Natural History Collections (NHCs) can influence how humans implement conservation changes in flora and fauna communities and ecosystems. Through the use of legacy data (old NHCs and their associated locality/collection information), data correction (background data or pseudo absences added to presence-only data), and the SDM software, Maxent (and its associated geographic information systems or GIS projected models), it has been shown that it is feasible to create a low budget protocol/setup to project the past, present and future of species population changes. This has been done in the past few decades as more collections …

Methanogens: Pushing The Boundaries Of Biology, Nicole R. Buan
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Methanogens are anaerobic archaea that grow by producing methane gas. These microbes and their exotic metabolism have inspired decades of microbial physiology research that continues to push the boundary of what we know about how microbes conserve energy to grow. The study of methanogens has helped to elucidate the thermodynamic and bioenergetics basis of life, contributed our understanding of evolution and biodiversity, and has garnered an appreciation for the societal utility of studying trophic interactions between environmental microbes, as methanogens are important in microbial conversion of biogenic carbon into methane, a high-energy fuel. This review discusses the theoretical basis for …

The Drug Discovery Of Potential Anti-Cancer Agents To Inhibit The Demethylation Catalytic Activity Of The Jmjc Domain Of Kdm3a, Balgees Alshanqeti
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Lysine demethylase 3A (KDM3A) is an enzyme that specifically catalyzes the removal of 2 or three methyl groups from lysine 9 of histone 3 (KH3). It belongs to the family of histone demethylases that contain the Jumonji C (JmjC) domain, which means cruciform in Japanese. KDM3A also belongs to a family of hydroxylases that are alpha-ketoglutarate dependent. The role of KDM3A in the cell is not yet understood, however, and based on its demethylation of studies have showed that its expression is elevated in embryonic stem cells in humans and in mice. In general, patterns of elevated expression of KDM3A …

Bullying In Schools: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Early-Career Elementary School Principals, Jason Q. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Since the latter part of the 19th Century, researchers have been studying the bullying phenomenon and the devastating short- and long-term impact it has on children’s lives. In an attempt to reduce bullying incidents that arise in school, many have set up anti-bullying programs. The goal of these programs is twofold: (a) to reduce the number of bullying incidents in school and (b) create a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students. Although principals work tirelessly to establish conditions to sustain learning for others, they receive very little support for their own learning and development. As principals’ on-going experiences …

Organic aerosol (OA) is an important fraction of submicron aerosols. However, it is challenging to predict and attribute the specific organic compounds and sources that lead to observed OA loadings, largely due to contributions from secondary production. This is especially true for megacities surrounded by numerous regional sources that create an OA background. Here, we utilize in situ gas and aerosol observations collected on board the NASA DC-8 during the NASA–NIER KORUS-AQ (Korea–United States Air Quality) campaign to investigate the sources and hydrocarbon precursors that led to the secondary OA (SOA) production observed over Seoul. First, we investigate the contribution …

New York City’s public housing, known as NYCHA, is a popular choice for disabled and elderly adults. 40% of NYCHA residents receive support from government programs intended to help older New Yorkers and New Yorkers with disabilities, and 32% of NYCHA households include an elderly person. Contrast that to New York City as a whole, where 11.2% of the population is disabled and 13% is elderly. For many disabled and elderly New Yorkers, NYCHA is one of precious few affordable options in an increasingly expensive city. But recent reporting suggests that NYCHA housing may be especially poorly suited for people …

Abstract
Nursing communication plays a pivotal role in patient-centered care. However, statistics have shown that failures in communication exist in more than 20% of all hospital settings (Sethi & Rani, 2017). Within the explored microsystem, a gap in patient communication was identified through the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys. Reports revealed that the microsystem was performing at 69%, which is 11% below the national average for nursing communication (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2018). After performing a microsystem assessment, there was a measurable communication opportunity between the patients and nurses. It was determined …
