Intergenerational service-learning in higher education positively affects older adults and students, but little is known about the effectiveness of interdisciplinary, reverse mentoring programs that use technology as the medium of bringing generations together. This study describes an intergenerational service-learning program that utilizes reverse mentoring within higher education, the "Engaging Generations Program," at a midsized public university in New England where students help older adults learn about technology, and students gain communication and teaching skills. In this article, we outline how the program was implemented, present quantitative data on participation outcomes for students and older adults and qualitative data from older …

Backpacks: A Program For Improving Children’S Readiness To Learn And Family Food Security, Lauri Wright
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
An increasing gap has been seen between the government food assistance programs and need. One program filling the deficit is Feeding America’s BackPack Program. The Backpack provides nutritious food to children to eat on the weekends when they may not have access to an adequate amount of food. This study evaluated the impact of the program on children’s food security, readiness to learn, and behavioral and mental health. A mixed methodology was utilized. Results showed improved food security and increased readiness to learn among participants. BackPack may be an effective program for meeting the gap in food assistance.

Personal Health Records (PHR), often known as patient portal, are consumer-centric tools that can strengthen consumers’ ability to actively manage their own health and healthcare. The incorporation of patient portals provides the promise to assist with Triple Aim and population health goals. Patient portals encourage patients to play a more active role in their healthcare by giving them more responsibility for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing chronic diseases and thus may provide a cost-effective way to improve quality of care. In this study, we extend the existing literature by using a data analytic approach to provide more insights in …

What Are The Gaps In Mobile Patient Portal? Mining Users Feedback Using Topic Modeling, Cherie Noteboom, Mohammad Al-Ramahi
Research & Publications
Patient portals are positioned as a central component of patient engagement through the potential to change the physician-patient relationship and enable chronic disease self-management. In this article, we extend the existing literature by discovering design gaps for patient portals from a systematic analysis of negative users’ feedback from the actual use of patient portals. Specifically, we adopt topic modeling approach, LDA algorithm, to discover design gaps from online low rating user reviews of a common mobile patient portal, EPIC’s mychart. To validate the extracted gaps, we compared the results of LDA analysis with that of human analysis. Overall, the results …

Introduction: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals face health disparities linked to societal stigma, discrimination, and denial of their civil and human rights which impact reproductive health. Previous pregnancy, induced abortion, and hormonal contraceptive use are common among women who report sex with women, regardless of self-identification as lesbian. LGBTQ have higher risk of smoking, use illicit drugs or have alcohol related problems. Methods: A faculty development training addressed methods and skills for teaching cultural competence and eliminate health disparities. Faculty facilitated a small group active learning activity, including a vignette and a reflective self-evaluation, for medical students …

Balancing Efficacy And Effectiveness With Philosophy, History, And Theory-Building In Occupational Therapy Education Research, Barbara Hooper, Jyothi Gupta, Andrea Bilics, Steven D. Taff
Balancing Efficacy And Effectiveness With Philosophy, History, And Theory-Building In Occupational Therapy Education Research, Barbara Hooper, Jyothi Gupta, Andrea Bilics, Steven D. Taff
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
The preferred focus for education research in occupational therapy increasingly rests on studies that investigate efficacy and effectiveness in the teaching-learning context. While important, the almost exclusive promotion of outcomes-focused studies can come at the expense of other forms of inquiry, including philosophy, history, and theory-building. To fully inform education and enhance practice, outcomes-focused research needs the conceptual foundation provided by philosophical, historical, and theory-building studies. In this paper, the authors suggest that the research enterprise in occupational therapy education is in its infancy and, therefore, quite susceptible to shortcuts that head straight to outcomes. To address this issue, the …

Dreaming Of Eden: A Sociological Inquiry Into Sacred Selves And Public Places, Donald J. Ebel
Sociology Department Publications
A diverse literature from several different disciplines addresses the issues of identity, settings and spirituality. This paper focuses upon drawing these traditions together in order to understand the relationship from a more holistic perspective, and to discern to what degree the three domains interact in a sociological sense. Several hypotheses are tested to discover if setting influences the salience of people’s spiritual identity or the levels of their spiritual transcendence, as well as whether or not age, controlling for other factors, explains or influences these two aspects of spiritual expression. Findings indicate that neither setting nor age significantly influence identity …

Enhanced Depression Screening In The Cardiac Rehabilitation Setting An Evidence-Based Project, Heidi Winslow
Enhanced Depression Screening In The Cardiac Rehabilitation Setting An Evidence-Based Project, Heidi Winslow
Doctoral Dissertations and Scholarly Projects
Depression is common amongst patients with cardiovascular disease. This evidence-based project was designed to evaluate the impact of a practice improvement intervention for screening and referrals in cardiac patients with depression. The American Heart Association Advisory Council recommends depression screening, treatment, and support to provide adequate diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up to patients. Cardiacrehabilitation (CR) is a coordinated effort of structured treatments with physical, mental, and social components, to favorably influence cardiac healing and resume optimal functioning. The problem is current depression screening and referrals are not being documented electronically in the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) setting limiting real-time communication amongst the …

Longitudinal Relationship Between Onset Of Physical Symptoms And Functional Impairment, Lisa M. Mcandrew, Drew A. Helmer, Shou-En Lu, Helena K. Chandler, Sarah Slotkin, Karen S. Quigley
Educational & Counseling Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Patients with chronic physical symptoms (e.g., chronic pain) often have significant functional impairment (i.e., disability). The fear avoidance model is the dominant theoretical model of how the relationship between chronic physical symptoms and functional impairment develops and proposes a cyclical/bidirectional relationship. There has never been a definitive test of the proposed bi-directional relationship. The current study followed 767 Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom soldiers from pre-deployment, when they were relatively healthy, to one year after deployment, when it was anticipated that symptoms would increase or develop. Over the four assessment time points, physical symptom severity consistently predicted worse functional impairment …
