Improving Hand-Off Communication Between The Skilled Nursing Facility And The Emergency Department, Dubravka Labovic
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
The purpose of this project is to improve hand-off procedure between Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) and Emergency Department (ED). Patient population consists of all retired veterans who currently reside in California Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Home of California (CalVet) – the state long-term care facility for elderly. The problem occurs when continuation of care is compromised due to poor exchange of information at the time of transfer to ED. Nurses in SNF need a step-by-step procedure that will improve the process of transfer and the intention of this project is to create a process that will become daily …
Cohousing Design Strategies For Active Aging, Marisela Thompson
Cohousing Design Strategies For Active Aging, Marisela Thompson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Objective:
Evaluate and identify approaches to the physical design, with emphasis on the interior design, of a cohousing model can be adapted to support the physical, cognitive and social health aspects of active aging.
Background:
Housing models evolve with the needs of society. Today, the societal practice of living in traditional nuclear-family based housing is challenged by the lack of financial resources(Blanchard 2017) and the need to care for an aging population. This project attempts to identify a housing model that promotes multigenerational co-housing as a means to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the elder population.

Fathers’ Caregiving In Fragile Families: Variation By Family Contexts, Gender Ideology, Race And Ethnicity, Rachel Teressa Macfarlane
Fathers’ Caregiving In Fragile Families: Variation By Family Contexts, Gender Ideology, Race And Ethnicity, Rachel Teressa Macfarlane
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study, I explore factors that predict fathers’ caregiving for children up to five years old. I study the role of social contexts in fathers’ caregiving trajectories for their young children, including family dynamics and parent’s gender ideology, across ethnoracial groups. I use OLS regressions to investigate how fathers’ early caregiving experiences, their linked-lives with others, and their attitudes about the fatherhood role predict later caregiving for their children, and how those patterns very between families with different ethnoracial backgrounds. I use summed averages of itemized caregiving by fathers, rather than proxy …
Psychological Effects Of Parental Divorce In Adulthood, Alexander Wambach, Dr. Kevin Shafer
Psychological Effects Of Parental Divorce In Adulthood, Alexander Wambach, Dr. Kevin Shafer
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The United States has experienced a greying of divorce over the last 25 years. During this period, the divorce rate among couples aged 50 and older doubled, and almost 25 percent of divorces that took place in 2010 involved someone 50 years of age or older (Brown and Lin 2013). Many of these older divorcing couples are likely to have children who are already adults at the time the divorce takes place. Qualitative evidence indicates the adult children of late-life divorce are negatively impacted in some way (Greenwood 2012). I hypothesized that adults who have a parent that is recently …
Effect Of Exercise And Hypoxia On Plasma Telomerase, Charli D. Aguilar
Effect Of Exercise And Hypoxia On Plasma Telomerase, Charli D. Aguilar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Introduction: Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) is the enzyme that adds telomeric sequences to the end of linear chromosomes. Exercise has shown to upregulate acutely leukocyte TERT after just 30 minutes of running on a treadmill at 80% of VO2max (Denham et al., 2016). Hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is also a mediator of TERT in in vitro (Nishi et al., 2004). Moderate acute exposure to hypoxia was associated with substantial increases in plasma TERT in a recent study on rats (Wang et al., 2014). The specific aim of the current study was to identify if acute hypoxia upregulates plasma TERT …
Predictors Of Graduate Students' Self-Efficacy For Working With Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Cassie M. Dinecola
Predictors Of Graduate Students' Self-Efficacy For Working With Persons With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Their Families, Cassie M. Dinecola
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continue to climb, the need for knowledgeable and competent professionals is critical. Research has shown that child symptoms and behavior are related to parent stress and mental health and that this relationship is bidirectional, suggesting the need for the use of a family-centered care model (FCC) that addresses both child and parent needs. While social workers are well-prepared to provide FCC to persons with ASD and their families, few social workers enter the field of developmental disabilities. Professionals more involved in the ASD field, such as special educators, often are equipped to work …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
According to the Stress Process Theory, people who are marginalized in society encounter more stress than those in more advantaged positions. Immigrants are one such marginalized group in the United States (US) who may experience greater psychological stress than their US-born counterparts due to (1) severing of social ties; (2) social disadvantage and marginalization; and (3) adaptation to a new environment. This study examines the disparity in stress by nativity, and how social factors contribute to this disparity for Asian and Pacific Islander (API) women. Data come from the Asian Community Health Initiative, which included a sample of 291 foreign-born …

Exploring How The Home Environment Influences Eating And Physical Activity Habits Of Low-Income, Latino Children Of Predominantly Immigrant Families: A Qualitative Study, Ana Cristina Lindsay, Sherrie F. Wallington, Faith D. Lees, Mary L. Greaney
Public Health Faculty Publications
Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority population group in the United States, and children in low-income Latino families are at elevated risk of becoming overweight or having obesity. A child’s home is an important social environment in which he/she develops and maintains dietary and physical activity (PA) habits that ultimately impact weight status. Previous research suggests the parents are central to creating a home environment that facilitates or hinders the development of children’s early healthy eating and PA habits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore low-income Latino parents’ beliefs, parenting styles, and parenting practices related …

Personality Type & The Slp’S Employment Setting: Is There A Pattern?, Ashley Ann Schurr
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a pattern in the practicing SLP’s personality type (similar to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and the employment setting the speech-language pathologist currently works in. Speech-language pathologists across the U.S. who hold the certificate of clinical competence (CCC) were surveyed, being randomly selected from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) mailing list. Due to low response rate, data was then gathered in an alternate way, through ASHA Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Data was analyzed as two separate data sets, then combined for a n=321. Combined data showed that top personality …

Teaching Social Justice: Intergenerational Service-Learning In Digital Media Course, Margaret O. Finucane, Linda M. Seiter, Nathan C. Gehlert
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Digital media play an increasingly dominant role in reinforcing and challenging power inequality in social and institutional relationships. This paper describes how a service-learning component engaged students in community-based interactions that not only deepened their understanding of course content but also increased their commitment to diversity, community issues, and personal development. A close look at three case studies shows that integrating service learning into a first year seminar on digital media and social justice had positive outcomes for students when intentionally paired with community partners offering course-related projects.

Differences In Perceived Stress, Locus Of Control, And Coping Styles Used By Male And Female Stem And Human Service Majors, Dawn M. Lowe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current study sought to determine if program type along with gender could predict the type of coping styles students are more likely to use. Secondly, it endeavored to uncover whether a college student’s gender and program type might affect their locus of control and the amount of perceived stress reported. It was hypothesized that female students in Human Service programs would exhibit the most adaptive coping styles, while males in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs utilize the most maladaptive coping styles. Moreover, it was postulated that females in Human Service programs would report a more internalized locus …

A Biomechanical Examination Of The Lower Extremities In High Heeled Shoes, Ann Sylvia
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Women have been wearing shoes of various heel heights for hundreds of years. However, the effects of wearing high-heeled shoes upon a woman’s gait has not been significantly studied. Recently, high heeled shoes along with their purpose and place in society has come under fire with the current First Lady’s donning of 4.5” (0.11 m) Louboutin stilettoes. The vocal majority of criticisms seemed to center on the symbolization of high heels, denoting femininity and an elite position of wealth and power while a small minority focused on criticizing the potential negative health effects. Heel heights and styles fall in and …

Distinguishing Pain Versus Psychiatric Behavior In Alzheimer's Disease Patients, Morgan E. Krump
DNP and Student Works
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients are at risk for not having their pain recognized. When nurses do not have adequate knowledge and tools to help determine if an AD patient is experiencing pain this often results in ignored and under-treated pain (Malara et al., 2016). In nursing staff working in a long-term care (LTC) facility (P) how does a multifaceted educational approach utilizing Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) and Management of Pain Clinical Best Guidelines (I) increase the competence level in distinguishing pain versus psychiatric behaviors in AD patients (O) over a period of 90 days? The local problem involves …

Abstract
The Effect of a Stage of Change Tailored Intervention on Physical Activity and Psychological States of Older Adults
Introduction: As life expectancy increases in the United States, activity promotion programs aim to help older adults continue to remain happy, healthy, and productive. Programs that facilitate exercise and lifestyle changes can offset regular age-related declines and improve participation in regular fitness programs. Developing more active lifestyles can help the elderly maintain independence in their everyday activities.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a physical activity intervention tailored to participants’ stage of change on attitudes …
Promoting Antibiotic Stewardship For Uti Management In Long Term Care Residents Through Standardized Clinical Practice Guidelines., Juliana M. Enoakpa
Promoting Antibiotic Stewardship For Uti Management In Long Term Care Residents Through Standardized Clinical Practice Guidelines., Juliana M. Enoakpa
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most diagnosed infections requiring antibiotics in long-term care (LTC) facilities. The rising prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens treatment of infections that were once responsive to antibiotic therapy. The inappropriate use of antibiotics in this Midwestern LTC facility provided the impetus for implementing a standardized clinical practice guideline (CPG) for diagnosing UTIs among the LTC residents. A data collection tool was developed for the audit that identified the specific assessment criteria for UTI management and eligibility criteria for antibiotics. Physicians and NPs at the LTC facility were administered a questionnaire prior to implementation of …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Surgical patients, aged 65 and older, comprise the largest surgical population. Increased age correlates with an increased incidence of postoperative delirium. Postoperative delirium (POD) can drastically increase healthcare costs, length of hospital stay, and overall morbidity and mortality. A clinical reference tool was created to have available for perioperative staff members at a 200-bed community hospital in the Midwest. The tool describes risk factors, prevention methods, and treatment options for POD. The initial implementation of the project was achieved with a PowerPoint presentation which was created to summarize the information found in the literature review and to instruct perioperative staff …

Effect Of Curcumin Supplementation On Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, And Muscle Damage, Steven Allen Basham
Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation can be detrimental to exercise performance. Antioxidants such as curcumin are shown to reduce exercise-induced OS, inflammation, muscle damage, and soreness. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of curcumin on biomarker markers of OS (MDA, TAC), inflammation (TNF-á), muscle damage (CK) and soreness. Participants performed an exercise-induced muscle damage protocol. Before and after supplementation, subjects were randomly assigned to curcumin (1.5 g/day) or placebo for 28 days. Blood was sampled immediately before and after exercise, as well as 60 min, 24, and 48 h after exercise. No significant differences were observed …

Comparing Ratios Of Depression Between Female To Male Mci Patients And The General Population, Abbie Levinson
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition that affects 20% of adults aged 60 and older. Patients with MCI find themselves in a place between healthy cognitive function and dementia. MCI is characterized by the forgetting of events and conversations, difficulty completing complex tasks, and trouble with remembering familiar environments. Previous studies on MCI suggest that patients are at a 40% greater risk of developing dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, as their condition progresses (Petersen, 1999). Accompanying that, MCI patients are often diagnosed with a mood disorder, commonly depression (Orgeta, Qazi, Spector, & Orrell, 2015). Prior studies have presented that in …

Living, Dying, After Death: Achieving A "Good" Death In The Time Of Aids Orphan Care, Ellen Block
Living, Dying, After Death: Achieving A "Good" Death In The Time Of Aids Orphan Care, Ellen Block
Sociology Faculty Publications
AIDS has devastated communities across southern Africa, leaving many children orphaned. Grandmothers are considered ideal caregivers because of cultural expectations of intergenerational care, and because they have not been decimated by AIDS to the same extent as younger adults. However, these grandmothers, who currently carry the majority of the burden of care for AIDS orphans, are themselves aging and dying. I argue here that in Lesotho, the caregiving demanded of grandmothers late into their lives not only alters kin relations for the living, but has increasingly made a “good death” unachievable for elderly caregivers.

Evaluating Preexisting Qualitative Research Data For Secondary Analysis, Victoria Sherif
Educational Leadership Studies Faculty Publications
In this article, I explore the nature of secondary analysis and provide a brief history of the method. Qualitative secondary analysis is a relatively under-used method in education and the social sciences, often due to the lack of easily accessible, relevant, trustworthy, and complete data. I address some of the potentials and limitations that influence its use and explore criteria for assessing the quality and sufficiency of preexisting qualitative research data. Qualitative secondary analysis has important implications for qualitative researchers, students and practitioners interested in generating new knowledge via unobtrusive, reliable, valid, and time/cost effective research through the wider use …
