The Effect Of Disfluency On The Framing Effect, Jon P. Baldwin, Haley M. Newton, Matthew E. Davis
The Effect Of Disfluency On The Framing Effect, Jon P. Baldwin, Haley M. Newton, Matthew E. Davis
Journal of Counseling and Psychology
This study investigated the framing effect and examined whether disfluency reduces susceptibility to framing. Prior work has shown that when information is presented in a fluent manner individuals process the content quickly, however when it is presented in a disfluent hard-to-read manner more analytical processing systems are activated. The current study examined the impact of fluency and dual process theory on framing susceptibility. Participants completed three classic decision problems (Asian Disease Problem, School Dropout Prevention Problem, and Fatal Disease Problem) with answers written in a risk seeking or risk averse manner and the font manipulated. The framing effect was again …

One-Sentence, One-Word: An Innovative Data Collection Method To Enhance Exploration Of The Lived Experiences, Shannon L. Sibbald, Dylan Brennan, Aleksandra Zecevic
The Qualitative Report
Experienced-based methods are growing in popularity and are increasingly being utilized in a variety of research programs and investigations. They enable researchers and participants to co-design research strategies and outcomes and subsequently propose solutions to potential problems in the partnership. By applying an experience-based methods lens, we sought to augment traditional qualitative interviewing methodologies by using a novel method we named “one-sentence, one-word” (1S1W). To apply our 1S1W method, we used a phenomenological study that examined the relationship between the risk of falling and the desire of master athletes to engage in competitive sports. Participants reflected and recorded their subjective …

ABSTRACT
Older adults often require short-term nursing home care after an acute hospital stay to receive skilled nursing or rehabilitation services. Rehospitalization after a skilled nursing facility (SNF) admission is a potential indicator of poor nursing home quality that is associated with substantial risks of complications and increased costs of care. This study examined resident and facility factors associated with 30-day rehospitalizations during a one-year study period from SNFs in New Mexico. The Minimum Data Set 3.0 was used to explore resident factors and Nursing Home Compare data was used for facility factors. Among residents admitted to the SNF from …

Review Article: The Effect Of Exercise On Fat Browning Through Plasma Irisin Level Modulation To Overcome Obesity, Miftahul Nur Amaliyah, Purwo Sri Rejeki
Review Article: The Effect Of Exercise On Fat Browning Through Plasma Irisin Level Modulation To Overcome Obesity, Miftahul Nur Amaliyah, Purwo Sri Rejeki
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Overweight and obesity incidence continues to increase and becomes a global problem in recent decades. One of the pathophysiology is a low energy output, therefore energy homeostasis shifts positively. Exercise is considered as an effective method to increase energy output. Irisin is one of myokine type that is secreted to the bloodstream while exercising and causes changes in subcutaneous adipose tissue. In adipose cells, irisin will stimulate the browning process in White Adipose Tissue to increase thermogenesis and lipolysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Malnutrition in older adults results in significant personal, social, and economic burden. To combat this complex, multifactorial issue, evidence-based knowledge is needed on the modifiable determinants of malnutrition. Systematic reviews of prospective studies are lacking in this area; therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to investigate the modifiable determinants of malnutrition in older adults. METHODS: A systematic approach was taken to conduct this review. Eight databases were searched. Prospective cohort studies with participants of a mean age of 65 years or over were included. Studies were required to measure at least one determinant at baseline …

Assessment Of Dietary Patterns, Physical Activity And Obesity From A National Survey: Rural-Urban Health Disparities In Older Adults, Steven A. Cohen, Mary L. Greaney, Natalie J. Sabik
Public Health Faculty Publications
Background
Obesity is a critical public health issue, affecting over one-third of all Americans, and is an underlying cause of numerous health issues across the lifespan. For older adults, obesity is linked to premature declines in physical and mental health and cognitive functioning. The occurrence of obesity and related health behaviors and chronic diseases are higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Furthermore, rural areas of the United States have a higher proportion of older adults than urban areas. Few studies, to date, have explored rural-urban differences in the relationships between dietary patterns and obesity among older adults. Therefore, …
Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon
Older Artists And Acknowledging Ageism, Liz Langdon
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
Intergenerational (IG) learning has the potential to reinforce ageist ideas, through the culturally produced binary of old and young which often describes IG learning. This research with older artists revealed implicit age bias associated with a modernist tradition in art education which minimized the value of art production viewed as feminine. Language associated with ageism shares the descriptors of the feminine and seep into our perceptions. Cooperative action research with multi-age participants facilitated personal growth and through critical reflection, implicit ageism revealed in the researcher’s prior perspective is revealed.
Leaf-Ing A Legacy, Susan R. Whiteland
Leaf-Ing A Legacy, Susan R. Whiteland
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
Leaf-ing a Legacy is the story of a university art education class that joined with an elementary classroom and residents in a long term health/rehabilitative center through a service-learning project that utilized digital technology and art making in a problem-based learning format to explore the concept of legacy. Evidence was found that the experience promoted socio-emotional learning and fostered the building of socio-emotional capital for the participants involved.

Asset Building As Social Investment, Michael Sherraden
Asset Building As Social Investment, Michael Sherraden
Center for Social Development Research
Asset-building policies have been widely adopted since the middle of the 20th century, but most lack features that would make them accessible to all populations—features such as universal at-birth enrollment and progressive incentive structures. Because these policies are not inclusive, they primarily serve the well-off and are highly regressive. In this contribution to Social Investments, Asset Building, and Social Development—the State of the Art: A Special Issue in Honor of James Midgley, Michael Sherraden continued the work of formulating a proposal for a national policy to foster broad economic security by extending the benefits of asset accumulation to all members …

Comparing Balance Performance On Force Platform Measures In Individuals With Parkinson's Disease And Healthy Adults, Cathy C. Harro, Amanda Kelch, Cora Hargis, Abigail Dewitt
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Introduction. Postural instability is a known contributing factor to balance dysfunction and increased fall risk in those with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Computerized posturography employing a force platform system provides objective, quantitative as- sessments of postural control impairments. This study examines balance performance as measured by force platform (FP) tests in persons with PD compared to age-matched healthy adults. Secondarily, we examine if these FP measures provide diagnostic and clinically meaningful information about the underlying balance impairments in the PD population.
Methods. Participants—42 individuals with PD (Hoehn and Yahr stage 2.33 0.77) and 55 age-matched healthy adults—were assessed on …
