The Evolution Of Diet Breadth In Melissodes Bees (Apidae: Eucerini), Karen W. Wright
The Evolution Of Diet Breadth In Melissodes Bees (Apidae: Eucerini), Karen W. Wright
Biology ETDs
The relationship between phytophagous insects and their host plants has interested scientists since Darwinian times. Using modern phylogenetic inference, we are able to investigate these patterns using, not only the phylogenies of the insects, but the evolutionary relationships among the plants they feed on as well. The relationships between bees and the plants they pollinate were traditionally seen as mutualistic and were treated separately from the research investigating the antagonistic relationships between phytophagous insects and their host plants. However, recent phylogenetic studies have made great progress including bee-host relationships in with the larger body of work on phytophagous insects.

Matter Dis//Assembled: Revealing The Economies And Ecologies Of Aluminum, Noah Anderson
Architecture Thesis Prep
This project seeks to understand matter through the environments it creates. These environments, created through production, end-use, and disposal, extend to the scale of the world, the territory and the product. In a globalized world, the separate environments of a single material are highly external, and while we may know where a material comes from, the consequences of its extraction and manufacture are out-of-site, out-of-mind. This externalization is evident for Aluminum, which has a diverse and often contradictory range of environments.
Us, In Progress: Short Stories About Young Latinos, Emily Loveless
Us, In Progress: Short Stories About Young Latinos, Emily Loveless
Children's Book and Media Review
Us, in Progress is a collection of short stories written from the perspectives of twelve diverse young Latinos who live in the United States. The stories cover topics including health issues, prejudice, personal identity struggles, dreamers, and cultural and family pressure. Each story is based on news reports or personal stories related directly to the author, Lulu Delacre. The struggles and victories contained within the stories help to paint a broader understanding of the Latino community in the US today.
Flying Colors: A Guide To Flags From Around The World!, Ariel Woodbury
Flying Colors: A Guide To Flags From Around The World!, Ariel Woodbury
Children's Book and Media Review
Each country’s flag has a history. The style and color of the flag has symbolism that defines its country. Switzerland’s flag and other square flags are militaristic. Tribands, flags divided into three parallel strips of color, are symbolic of a republican country. Thirty-two countries that were once colonies of the British Empire still have the Union Jack in the upper hoist, the top corner by the flag pole. The Union Jack itself is a merging of the original English, Scottish, and Irish Flags. The history behind the development of our world flags and the individual flags themselves is rich and …

Fighting For Their Lives: Why The Marginalized Irish From The 1840s-1910 Dominated American Prizefighting, Owen Marshall
Honors Program Theses and Projects
One of the most recognizable figures in the world during his lifetime, heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, previously Cassius Clay and Cassius X, put his self-esteem on display with the simple declaration “I am the greatest.” This was a phrase he told himself long before he truly was the greatest, but he proved it to the world in 1964 when he defeated defending champion Sonny Liston. Upon knocking out his dangerous, violent, and cheating opponent, Ali whipped himself into a frenzy, as onlookers saw him fall over the ropes, scream at the ringside reporters who had previously doubted him, and …
Essays On Energy Economics And Environmental Policies, Janak R. Joshi
Essays On Energy Economics And Environmental Policies, Janak R. Joshi
Economics ETDs
This dissertation contains three distinct empirical chapters in applied energy and environmental economics. Each chapter focuses on a unique set of research questions, methods, and data. The unifying motivation therein concerns the development of renewable or alternative low-carbon energy sources as a policy response to the challenges of climate change mitigation, local and regional environmental quality issues, and energy security concerns. Economic and environmental evaluation of the energy policies coupled with understanding energy use patterns is of paramount importance. Together, the empirical chapters focus on demand, supply, and policy aspects of energy markets in the United States (US).

Representing Outside The Box: Identity-Based Constituencies And Surrogate Representation In U.S. State Legislatures, Julia Hellwege
Representing Outside The Box: Identity-Based Constituencies And Surrogate Representation In U.S. State Legislatures, Julia Hellwege
Political Science ETDs
This project asks: whom do representatives seek to represent and how do they do it? Specifically, I seek to understand how marginalized state legislators define the concept of “constituency” and the implications for their legislative behavior. I argue that marginalization affects legislators through two avenues: socially through their identity, and institutionally through the proportion their identity group holds in the state legislature. I argue that when legislators are marginalized their awareness of identity and identity-based issue needs are prioritized and they will come to define group members as a salient identity constituency. Furthermore, they will seek to represent this salient …
Paving The Way: An Evaluation Of Small Business Support Programs In The Kivalliq Region Of Nunavut, Gabrielle E. Morrill
Paving The Way: An Evaluation Of Small Business Support Programs In The Kivalliq Region Of Nunavut, Gabrielle E. Morrill
Rural Development
Small businesses in Nunavut face many opportunities and challenges. The Government of Nunavut and Government of Canada have expressed a commitment to support small business development in Nunavut to promote economic development and improve socioeconomic conditions for Nunavummiut. The question is: how can they best do that? Nunavut has developed a complex business service network to support small business development. The network provides many products and services, particularly funding opportunities and advisory services. This research analyzes the history of economic and business development in the Kivalliq (southwest) region of Nunavut. This includes precolonial Inuit economic institutions, which are vastly different …

Aspen Bibliography
The reliance of 10 Utah (USA) aspen forests on direct infiltration of growing season rain versus an additional subsurface water subsidy was determined from a trait- and process-based model of stomatal control. The model simulated the relationship between water supply to the root zone versus canopy transpiration and assimilation over a growing season. Canopy flux thresholds were identified that distinguished nonstressed, stressed, and dying stands. We found growing season rain and local soil moisture were insufficient for the survival of 5 of 10 stands. Six stands required a substantial subsidy (31–80% of potential seasonal transpiration) to avoid water stress and …
A Humble Guest: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Success And Competence In Rural Alaskan Mental Health Care, Daniel John Herman
A Humble Guest: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Success And Competence In Rural Alaskan Mental Health Care, Daniel John Herman
Psychology
Objective: Rural communities in Alaska face a long list of mental health disparities that are exacerbated by the other challenging factors inherent within the rural context. Rural Alaskan mental health care providers are faced with the tremendous task of providing clinically and culturally competent care to underserved and marginalized populations, with limited personal and professional resources, all while balancing the needs of the community, their own personal boundaries, and the pressure of remaining accountable to the larger system of professional ethics and guidelines. The aim of this study was to explore, identify, and understand from the perspective of rural Alaskan …
Spatial Trends And Environmental Drivers Of Epibenthic Shelf Community Structure Across The Aleutian Islands, Aaron Bland
Spatial Trends And Environmental Drivers Of Epibenthic Shelf Community Structure Across The Aleutian Islands, Aaron Bland
Marine Biology
The continental shelf around the Aleutian Islands supports important commercial and subsistence fisheries as well as multiple seabird and marine mammal populations. To sustainably manage these populations, more information is needed on the distribution of the benthic communities that support some of the top level consumers. Given the vast size and highly variable physical environment of the Aleutian Islands, it is likely that epibenthic community structure on the continental shelf will vary by geographic area and physical and oceanographic conditions. This project examined spatial patterns in Aleutian epibenthic shelf communities among oceanographic regions (island groups separated by major oceanographic passes) …

Landscape Modeling Of The Potential Natural Vegetation Of Santa Catalina Island, California, Travis Longcore, Nina Noujdina, Peter J. Dixon
Landscape Modeling Of The Potential Natural Vegetation Of Santa Catalina Island, California, Travis Longcore, Nina Noujdina, Peter J. Dixon
Western North American Naturalist
The vegetation of Santa Catalina Island has been significantly transformed through a history of introduction of exotic plant species and disturbance by large introduced herbivores. Many of these disturbances have been reduced in recent decades, using measures such as carefully controlling the number of bison and removing cattle, sheep, feral pigs, and goats. The success of subsequent vegetation restoration actions depends on the choice of the right plant community for a location, which may not be obvious for an island with extensive areas dominated by exotic species. Environmental niche modeling is an approach to re-create the spatial distribution of habitat …

Devon Tourism: The Story Of The County’S Economic Leviathan, Stephen Essex, Mark Brayshay
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Over the past 149 volumes of these Transactions, fewer than half a dozen papers have focused directly on tourism in Devon. Given its key role in shaping the county’s history, landscape and infrastructure, and its contemporary social and economic character, such a dearth of studies is striking and contrasts with the burgeoning body of scholarly work on Devon tourism aired elsewhere. The aim of this paper is to offer a broad, benchmark review of the origins, historical growth and changing character, as well as the contemporary state and future prospects, of tourism in the county. The analysis demonstrates how the …

Landscapes Of Illness, Politics Of Segregation And Discourse Of Empathy In The 19th Century Leprosy Narratives Of Hawaii, I-Chun Wang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Leprosy is one of the oldest known human diseases, recognized throughout the world. Leprosy causes serious damage to the nervous system, often resulting in deformity in the absence of an effective treatment; sufferers were often left at the mercy of its natural process or were segregated from others due to the fear of contagion. The places ravaged by leprosy became lands of fear. Modern science has shown that leprosy bacilli have a high rate of infectivity but a rather low rate of pathogenicity, and above ninety percent of people are equipped with immunity to leprosy. Leper colonies as described in …

More Migrants With Nowhere To Go?, Mary E. Theis
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In "More Migrants with Nowhere to Go?” Mary Theis reframes the stories of the Tai Dam and discusses this group of people, who migrated from Vietnam and Laos to Thailand and then to Iowa in 1975 after the wars in Southeast Asia when they virtually had nowhere to go. It is based on interviews with some of the 1,200 Tai Dam who were invited by Governor Robert Ray to resettle in Des Moines, Iowa, and nearby cities. The stories are contextualized by research on U.S. policies on immigration and the current precarious fates of other migrants in the United States …

Reminiscing About Latin: Cases Of Life-Writing And The Classical Tradition, David Andrew Porter
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Reminiscing about Latin: Cases of Life-writing and the Classical Tradition," David Andrew Porter examines the life of Latin and life-writing in Latin while drawing on other languages. He argues that post-classical Latin writing is vital to many modern writers and offers a challenge to post-Romantic conceptions of literature. He explores how Latin literary traditions affect professional and accidental writers, from the Renaissance scholar Isaac Casaubon to the Jamaican poet Francis Williams, in order to draw attention to the humour, irony and conflict in such lived experiences and writing.

Albert Camus' Social, Cultural And Political Migrations, Benaouda Lebdai Pr
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article “Albert Camus’ social, cultural and political migrations,” Benaouda LEBDAI analyses Albert Camus’ posthumous autofiction The First man, a fascinating self-representation and self -telling. Found after his deadly car accident, the manuscript adds a tragic dimension to the disguised autobiography. This paper demonstrates Camus’ capacity to migrate from one world to another, looks into the reasons behind such attitudes and stresses the significance of an outstanding life account within the on-going debate between France and Algeria about his political stands during colonial Algeria. His vision of the indigenous people, the Algerians, and of the future of colonial Algeria, …

A Snowball's Chance: Debt Snowball Vs. Debt Avalanche, Evan Mcallister
A Snowball's Chance: Debt Snowball Vs. Debt Avalanche, Evan Mcallister
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Traditional mathematical analysis states that the most efficient way to pay off interest-bearing consumer debt is to pay the individual debts in order from largest to smallest interest rate. In doing this, the debtor will eliminate the largest sources of interest first, thus shortening the overall time-to-pay. This method is known as the “Debt Avalanche.” The “Debt Snowball” method, popularized in large part by investor-author David Ramsey, recommends that consumers pay debts in order from smallest to largest, regardless of interest rate. In this paper, I conduct an empirical analysis of the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finance (SCF), calculating …

Pharmaceutical Territories: Contested Pharmacopoeias And Environmental Debates In Brazil, Kerri Brown
Anthropology Theses and Dissertations
Over the past 30 years, emergent global health and trade policies have transformed "traditional medicine" into a contested biomedical endeavor. Brazil has been particularly affected by these policies due to its vast biodiversity and numerous labelled as traditional. As a result, the country has implemented strict intellectual property laws, has begun to invest in federal research on medicinal plants and other forms of traditional medicine, and in 2009 established its National Program of Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapeutics based on the World Health Organization's traditional medicine program, integrating medicinal plants into Brazil's national healthcare system. This multi-sited ethnographic project compares the …

Dignity In Decision-Making: Modernity And Social Navigation Among Rural French Polynesian Youth, Laura Jarvis
Anthropology Theses and Dissertations
This research examines critical questions about the experiences of youth through the lenses of modernity, subjectivity, and the lifecourse. Growing up in a (post)colonial context of shifting definitions of adulthood, youth from the rural island of Rurutu, French Polynesia must navigate various decisions and transformations with little information to base their future aspirations on. This dissertation identifies dignity as the main motivating factor in youth decision-making, one that is constantly redefined as youth navigate shifting social fields. Dignity, as used here, is a target youth strive for in order to contest feelings of social precarity stemming from unaccommodating education systems …
