Aims of project: To produce a series of talking head videos from a range of stakeholders to compliment and support UoP work on employability in the curriculum.Background/context to project: The University, in meeting the challenges of TEF, needs to focus on improving student employability outcomes. This has been recognised by the Employability Jigsaw Project. An outcome of this has been to develop an ‘Employability in the Curriculum and Beyond’ website, with resources for academics on how to embed employability into degree programmes. This web resource is an excellent starting point, but would benefit and be strengthened by the presence of …

Numerical Analysis Of The Rheological Behaviour Of The Socompa Debris Avalanche, Chile, F Vagnon, M Pirulli, I Manzella, K Kelfoun, Am Ferrero
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Socompa Volcano provides one of the world’s best-exposed example of a sector collapse that generated debris avalanche deposit. The debris avalanche, occurred about 7000 years ago, involved 25 km3 of fragmented rock that formed a thin but widespread (500 km2) deposit. Numerical model of this event was already performed using a shock-capturing method based on double upwind Eulerian scheme in order to provide information for investigating, within realistic geological context, its dynamic and run-out (Kelfoun and Druitt 2005). This paper analyses an important aspect of the continuum numerical modeling of rapid landslides as debris avalanche: the interchangeability of rheological parameter …
Emotions Predict Policy Support: Why It Matters How People Feel About Climate Change, Susie Wang, Zoe Leviston
Emotions Predict Policy Support: Why It Matters How People Feel About Climate Change, Susie Wang, Zoe Leviston
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Current research shows that emotions can motivate climate engagement and action, but precisely how has received scant attention. We propose that strong emotional responses to climate change result from perceiving one's “objects of care” as threatened by climate change, which motivates caring about climate change itself, and in turn predicts behaviour. In two studies, we find that climate scientists (N = 44) experience greater emotional intensity about climate change than do students (N = 94) and the general population (N = 205), and that patterns of emotional responses explain differences in support for climate change policy. Scientists tied their emotional …

Understanding Chinese Cultural Tourists: Typology And Profile, Ganghua Chen, Songshan (Sam) Huang
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study aims to offer a clear and up-to-date typology and profile of Chinese cultural tourists in mainland China following the framework based on cultural centrality and depth of cultural experience. Using a sample of mainland Chinese tourists (n = 656) at three cultural attractions in Guangzhou, China, a typology of Chinese cultural tourists (namely casual, sightseeing, purposeful, serendipitous, and incidental) was developed and trip characteristics (e.g. prior knowledge, time spent to get to know the site before visit, change in knowledge, and on-site activities) and sociodemographics of each segment were also examined. In addition, slight differences are found between …

Chambers, Joanne F Aitken, Jeff Dunn
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Geographical disparity in colorectal cancer (CRC) survival rates may be partly due to aging populations and disadvantage in more remote locations; factors that also impact the incidence and outcomes of other chronic health conditions. The current study investigates whether geographic disparity exists amongst previously diagnosed health conditions in CRC patients above and beyond age and area-level disadvantage and whether this disparity is linked to geographic disparity in CRC survival.
Methods: Data regarding previously diagnosed health conditions were collected via computer-assisted telephone interviews with a cross-sectional sample of n = 1,966 Australian CRC patients between 2003 and 2004. Ten-year survival …
‘Constructive Tensions’ In Resilience Research: Critical Reflections From A Human Geography Perspective, Ga Wilson
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This review paper critically examines four “constructive tensions” in current resilience research, the first three of which are: its association with the roots of the resilience concept in ecological research; issues surrounding resilience as a normative or neutral concept; and confusion about the often interchangeable use of “resilience” and “sustainability” as possibly synonymous terms. The paper refers to these ambiguities as constructive tensions which have sparked fruitful discussions and debates. A fourth constructive tension is directly associated with human geography's engagement with resilience, especially by addressing the relative aspatiality of “mainstream” resilience research, by reinforcing the importance of power and …

© 2018 The Authors Traditional methods of investment appraisal have been criticized in the context of climate change adaptation. Economic assessment of adaptation options needs to explicitly incorporate the uncertainty of future climate conditions and should recognise that uncertainties may diminish over time as a result of improved understanding and learning. Real options analysis (ROA) is an appraisal tool developed to incorporate concepts of flexibility and learning that relies on probabilistic data to characterise uncertainties. It is also a relatively resource-intensive decision support tool. We test whether, and to what extent, learning can result from the use of successive generations …

Chronology For Mountainous River Terraces: Osl/Irsl And Rock Dating Techniques Applied To Carbonate-Rich Terraces In The Atlas Mountains, Jr Zondervan, M Stokes, M Jain, J-P Buylaert, Mw Telfer, As Murray
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Improvements in numerical dating methods continues to open new possibilities for understanding sedimentary archives and thus unravelling Earth surface processes (e.g. Rixhon et al, 2017). In general, the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating is successful for deposits spanning last 100 ka, while Infra-Red Luminescence (IRSL) dating of feldspar can be applied on longer timescales (Buylaert et al, 2012). The Atlas Mountains in Morocco contain an abundance of carbonate-rich river terraces recording glacial-interglacial river evolution (Stokes et al., 2017) and are an ideal place to apply OSL techniques on mountainous river sediments deposited at distinct time scales. River strath terraces are …

Archaeal isoprenoidal glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether lipids (iGDGTs) and their non-isoprenoidal branched bacterial analogues (brGDGTs) have widespread applications in biogeochemistry and paleothermometry. Analysis of GDGTs usually involves separation using high performance liquid chromatography, typically coupled via atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation to mass spectrometric detection in selected ion-monitoring mode (HPLC–APCI-MS). However, reliable determination of ratios and, in particular, quantification by this technique, can be challenging due to differences in ionisation efficiencies of the various compounds. Quantification of GDGTs also relies on external calibration of the relative response to an internal standard with authenticated GDGTs, which are often not readily accessible. Here, …

Catchment Changes In Response To Tectonics And Climate: Using River Terraces And Dem Data In The Southern High Atlas Mountains (Morocco), Jr Zondervan, M Stokes, Sj Boulton, Ae Mather, Mw Telfer
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Tectonics and climate drive the generation and transport of sediment in mountain rivers as these evolve over time. On a glacial-interglacial scale, in particular catchment reorganisation and catchment incision dynamics control these processes, and affect fan deposition in sedimentary basins. The Atlas Mountains in Morocco exhibit ongoing catchment reorganisation and an abundance of river terraces recording glacial fluvial aggradation and interglacial-glacial incisional periods, opening up insight into the processes behind catchment evolution over geological timescales. Topography and river profiles across drainage divides are similar in a stable divide, and if they are unequal they indicate active catchment reorganisation. When reorganisation …

Tsunami Generation By Combined Fault Rupture And Landsliding, Del Postigo Prieto N Perez, A Raby, Sj Boulton, C Whittaker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Tsunami generation and propagation mechanisms should be clearly understood in order to inform predictive models and improve coastal community preparedness. Experimental results, supported by mathematical models, could potentially provide valuable input data for standard predictive models of tsunami generation and propagation. A unique set-up has been developed to reproduce a dual-source tsunami generation mechanism. The test-rig replicates a two-dimensional underwater fault rupture followed by a submarine landslide. The set-up was placed in a 20m flume of the COAST laboratory at Plymouth University. The aim of the experiments is to provide quality data for developing a parametrization of the initial conditions …

Potential Impacts Of An Academic Writing And Publishing Module On Scholarship And Teaching: A Qualitative Study, Roisin Donnelly
Journal Articles
This paper reports on a qualitative study exploring the extent to which an accredited Academic Writing and Publishing (AWP) module for faculty and graduate students helped them develop as scholars and how, over time, it affected their instructional beliefs and attitudes in working with their own undergraduate students. For the two module tutors, it was important to know how the participants applied what they learned from the module in their own teaching practice and to identify particularly effective aspects of the module that translated to this other context. Therefore, key themes explored in this paper are the impact of the …
