"Squeezed Between The Gunshots And The Gentrifiers”: Urban Agriculture In Philadelphia's Kensington Neighborhood, Arianna Hall-Reinhard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Urban agriculture (UA) is part of the broader alternative food movement and a potential avenue through which to “do” food justice work. UA projects in the urban Global North are frequently motivated by social and food justice goals. Despite these guiding ideals, UA projects in America are rife with internal contradictions, including those related to racial inequalities, complex gentrification dynamics, and funding realities. In this paper, I employ the conceptual frameworks of food justice and urban political ecology to consider how gentrification and UA project funding structures affect five specific UA projects in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood. While the loss of …

Molecular Evolution Of Sedimentary Organic Matter In Marcellus Shale., Vikas Agrawal
Molecular Evolution Of Sedimentary Organic Matter In Marcellus Shale., Vikas Agrawal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several biological and physico-chemical processes lead to the transformation of organic matter (OM) from simple organic compounds to a complex macromolecule and a mixture of hydrocarbons during the geological evolution of sedimentary rocks. These changes are controlled by biological activity in the early stages of burial, and by temperature and pressure in the later stages. The increasing temperature and pressure conditions with burial is termed as maturation, in which biomolecules are converted into petroleum. Three consecutive stages of maturation namely: diagenesis, catagenesis and metagenesis produce irreversible changes in the composition of sedimentary OM. The bulk characteristics (such as elemental composition) …

Adaptation Of Customary Quechua Indigenous Political Organization In The Face Of Modern Resource Extraction: A Case Study In The Apurimac Region Of The Andes Of Peru, Yojana Miraya Oscco
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
This research focused on the forms and structure of customary political organization in Quechua indigenous communities of the Peruvian Andes that extend from the villages to their associated migrant communities in the capital. As the mining industry has been expanding rapidly throughout the Andes in recent decades, describing the political organization of these remote communities is a key aspect of their negotiation practices with these external industries. This research was conducted utilizing grounded theory in a comparative case-study format by analyzing two villages and their associated migrant communities from the Andean District of Juan Espinoza Medrano. This research utilized a …

East Or West? Understanding Strategic Alignment In The Post-Soviet Space, John A. Mowchan
East Or West? Understanding Strategic Alignment In The Post-Soviet Space, John A. Mowchan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This comparative foreign policy dissertation examines small state alignment in the post-Soviet space. Specifically, I ask what explains change and continuity in the strategic alignment patterns of former Soviet states with the United States and Russian Federation since the end of the Cold War? To answer this question, I analyze the alignment trajectories of ruling governments in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine from 1995 to 2015. While neorealists expect these materially weak states to bandwagon with Russia because of threat or power considerations, the empirical reality does not consistently support these theoretical expectations. What has occurred is that at different …

This MFA thesis addresses work completed and presented in a thesis exhibition at West Virginia University. It expresses the personal motivations, the process and the inspirations behind the exhibit. Through the use of abstraction, I was searching for a personal change in perspective, and a way to identify with people on a level that mirrors my long-term experience in the military. This was explored by uniformly adding Adobe Photoshop filters, in a step by step manner, to a selected series of portraits., to a selected series of portraits. The hope was by removing the surface characteristics of an individual what …

Constructing A Sense Of Place On Top Of The World, Catherine E. Lovell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis examines written texts in summit logs by rock climbers at the peak of Baboquivari, located in southern Arizona. After scaling the mountain, rock climbers complete the ritual of documenting their success in a log located on the summit. Guided by the concepts of sense of place and ritual communication, this study investigated discourses articulated in summit logs in order to understand how rock climbers construct their sense of place for a contested landscape.;Baboquivari is the cosmological home of the Tohono O'odham and their creator I'itoi is believed to reside on the peak today. A good portion of Baboquivari …

Democratizing University Foodscapes? Student Food Cooperatives And The Neoliberal University, Amanda Marple
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
According to a report published in 2015, the National Center for Education estimated that over 20 million students were forecasted to enroll in higher education in the 2016--17 school year, situating American universities as major institutional food retailers. Over the past two decades, corporate food providers have increasingly sought long-term public and private university contracts as a means to expand their reach into lucrative campus food landscapes (foodscapes), replacing in-house services with cheaper, more "efficient, and "productive" dining strategies. Companies such as Sodexo, Aramark, and Bon Appetit control the foodscapes of many university campuses across the United States, creating food …

Breaking Cycles Through Targeted Financial Literacy Education For Fifth- Through Eighth-Grade Students, Tonja Custis Brickhouse
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Financial literacy education continues to be a deficiency in the U.S. education system because it is not included in most school curricula, and little is known about the efficacy of the school district programs that do include it. A former Federal Reserve Chairman identified the lack of financial literacy as a national problem, and the National Financial Educators Council described it as the #1 problem in the current generation. Using Berger and Luckmann's conceptualization of social construction as the theoretical framework, the purpose of this study was to explore how access to financial literacy education is perceived by fifth- through …
Perspectives Among Successful Adult Learners In Two Diploma Completion Programs, Cheryl Rice
Perspectives Among Successful Adult Learners In Two Diploma Completion Programs, Cheryl Rice
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
More than 24,000 U.S. high school students drop out each year, contributing to the approximate 1.1 million U.S. adults who have not earned the high school diploma or General Education Development. This failure in educational attainment contributes significantly to the lack of economic and workforce development opportunities as well as the standard of living for more than 10% of the statewide population of a midwestern state. In response to this problem, the state entered into model programming in 2015 with 2 new approaches for adult education to diploma programs. The purpose of this basic qualitative interpretive research study was to …
The Determinants And The Consequences Of Adopting Accounting Standards In Islamic Banks: A Cross Country Study, Aziza Al Qamashoui
The Determinants And The Consequences Of Adopting Accounting Standards In Islamic Banks: A Cross Country Study, Aziza Al Qamashoui
Plymouth Business School Theses
This study investigates the determinants of adopting accounting standards (AAOIFI, IFRS or local standards) in thirty different countries with an Islamic banking industry. This study also examines the link between corporate governance disclosure, corporate social responsibility disclosure, and the adoption of accounting standards in the Islamic banking industry (IBI) as consequences for the adoption process. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only study that empirically investigates this topic. Environmental determinism theory is used as a framework to develop and test for explanations of the accounting standards used in countries where Islamic banks operate. Using multinomial logistic analysis …

Risk Factors For The Ill-Defined Causes Of Death In The Brazilian States: A Multilevel Analysis, Nadia Cristina Pinheiro Rodrigues, Regina Paiva Daumas, Andrea Sobral De Almeida, Gisele O'Dwyer, Monica Kramer De Noronha Andrade, Matthew B. Flynn, Valeria Teresa Saraiva Lino
Political Science & International Studies: Faculty Publications
This study describes the spatial-temporal changes of the proportion of ill-defined causes of death in Brazil (1998-2012) and investigates which demographic and socioeconomic factors affect this proportion. We collected information of the proportion of ill-defined causes of death by age (15-59 years), sex, period, locality, and socioeconomic data. We used a multilevel Poisson model to investigate which factors affect the risk of ill-defined causes of death. Unlike states located in the South and Midwest, we detected clusters with high proportional levels of these deaths in states in the North and Northeast regions. A greater proportion occurred in 1998-2002 (0.09), in …
Preference For Internet Therapy Versus Traditional Therapy To Treat Postpartum Depression, Megan E. Ford
Preference For Internet Therapy Versus Traditional Therapy To Treat Postpartum Depression, Megan E. Ford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A growing body of research has emerged about effective treatments for postpartum depression, specifically how the internet could become a pivotal and vital option for women with postpartum symptoms. With that in mind, the purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate whether women suffering from postpartum depression preferred traditional therapy treatment or internet therapy treatment. The nonexperimental survey design was used to assess differences between groups related to stigma, satisfaction with treatment, and perceived quality of treatment received. Data collected from a sample of 78 adult females, who had previously received postpartum depression therapy treatment, indicated there was no …
The Relationship Between Isolation, Distress, And Medical Care Among Transgender Coloradoans, Charles Tinnell
The Relationship Between Isolation, Distress, And Medical Care Among Transgender Coloradoans, Charles Tinnell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In Colorado in 2014, suicidal ideation or suicide attempts occurred up to 10 times more frequently among transgender persons than the general population. This reality occurred within a milieu of stigma that included transgender persons' negative perceptions of healthcare, a higher incidence of psychological distress, and an uncertain role for social isolation in their well-being. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the interactions between social isolation, supportive medical care, and psychological distress within the framework of Meyer's minority stress theory. Data were acquired from the 2014 Colorado Transgender Health Survey conducted by the One Colorado Education Fund …

Cognitive Behavioral Substance Treatment On Latino Engagement, Motivation, And Drug Use Thinking, Santiago Zepeda
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The U.S. Latino population seeking substance abuse treatment has nearly doubled over the past 10 years, yet ethnic-based research and intervention strategies are lacking. The purpose of this quantitative study was to evaluate the efficacy of the Treatment Readiness Induction Program (TRIP) among the Latino adolescent population. Cognitive behavioral therapy and the integrated judgment and decision making model provided the theoretical framework. Secondary data from 137 Latino/Latina participants were collected on engagement, motivation, and drug use thinking scales and their respective subscales to evaluate differences by gender and by a group of clients who received standard operating practice treatment (SOP) …

Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection In New York And North Carolina, Kehinde O. Abiodun
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, many hospitalized patients with indwelling urinary catheters acquire catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) during their hospital stay. CAUTI negatively affects peoples' health and quality of life and causes a financial burden to individuals and the nation. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to explore the relationship between gender, age, and hospital types and CAUTI incidence in New York and North Carolina over a 3-year period. The theoretical framework of choice was the Donabedian model. Simple logistic regression and hierarchical multivariable logistic regression analysis were performed on archival data that was requested from Healthcare Cost …
Mining And Analysis Of Real-World Graphs, Armita Abedijaberi
Mining And Analysis Of Real-World Graphs, Armita Abedijaberi
Doctoral Dissertations
"Networked systems are everywhere - such as the Internet, social networks, biological networks, transportation networks, power grid networks, etc. They can be very large yet enormously complex. They can contain a lot of information, either open and transparent or under the cover and coded. Such real-world systems can be modeled using graphs and be mined and analyzed through the lens of network analysis. Network analysis can be applied in recognition of frequent patterns among the connected components in a large graph, such as social networks, where visual analysis is almost impossible. Frequent patterns illuminate statistically important subgraphs that are usually …
