Representing Wilderness In The Shaping Of America's National Parks: Aesthetics, Boundaries, And Cultures In The Works Of James Fenimore Cooper, John Muir, And Their Artistic Contemporaries, Alana Jajko
Master’s Theses
This project studies the works of James Fenimore Cooper, John Muir, and their artistic contemporaries in relation to the shaping of America’s national parks and what it means for the parks and their attending wilderness to be symbolic of the nation. It seeks to reveal the national parks as artistic representations of a constructed wilderness, while also emphasizing the physical experience of the natural world as a means of supplementing our subjective views. Through the lenses of aesthetics, boundaries, and cultures, I narrow my study to focus on three distinct perspectives by which we can understand the national parks and …

Music Therapy And Multicultural Competence: A Survey Of Music Therapists' Training And Perceptions, Laura Kay Cahoon
Music Therapy And Multicultural Competence: A Survey Of Music Therapists' Training And Perceptions, Laura Kay Cahoon
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The changing demographics of the United States directly impacts the populations that music therapists serve. The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) provides a list of competencies regarding race, culture, and diversity, but how these are addressed in the classroom is not standardized. The purpose of this study was to examine music therapists’ perceptions of their training in multicultural competence. The researcher emailed 7,539 board-certified music therapists, 631 of whom completed the survey. Results indicated that 55.6% of music therapists think that multicultural competence is important, and the majority said that they felt prepared to demonstrate multicultural competence after completion of …

Climate change has significant consequences for land conservation. Government agencies and nonprofit land trusts heavily rely on perpetual conservation easements. However, climate change and other dynamic landscape changes raise questions about the effectiveness and adaptability of permanent conservation instruments like conservation easements. Building upon a study of 269 conservation easements and interviews with seventy conservation-easement professionals in six different states, we examine the adaptability of conservation easements to climate change. We outline four potential approaches to enhance conservation outcomes under climate change: (1) shift land-acquisition priorities to account for potential climate change impacts; (2) consider conservation tools other than perpetual …

Gulf War Era Ii Veterans' Cognitive Information Processing And The Civilian Employment Transition, Denita Monique Oyeka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gulf-War-era-II combat veterans have made professional contributions to the civilian workforce since returning from Iraq and Afghanistan combat operations. Service members in California encounter transition issues related to employment and adjusting their self-identity in the civilian employment culture. These complexities have led to career problems. Using Peterson, Sampson, Reardon, and Lenz's theory of cognitive information processing and Mincer & Becker's theory of human capital, the purpose of this phenomenological study was designed to provide a holistic account of the lived experiences of 11 Gulf War era II veterans who have successfully integrated into civilian employment with a focus on mitigating …
Knowledge Processes And The Potential For Adaptive Governance Of Inshore Fisheries In The Solomon Islands, Amber W. Datta
Knowledge Processes And The Potential For Adaptive Governance Of Inshore Fisheries In The Solomon Islands, Amber W. Datta
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Rapid environmental change, ranging from the collapse of fisheries to the rise of sea levels, poses significant challenges for the governance of marine resources. In Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), these changes result in the loss of marine resources, threatening both the biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. Existing top-down, centralized forms of environmental governance lack the flexibility needed to address these issues especially at local scales, while bottom-up approaches often lack the coordination and authority needed to respond quickly to change. More adaptive forms of marine governance are needed to ensure that PICTs …
Reproduction Of Space In The Mountains Of Morocco: A Case Study In The Western Rif, Ismail Medkouri
Reproduction Of Space In The Mountains Of Morocco: A Case Study In The Western Rif, Ismail Medkouri
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The environmental history of the mountains in Morocco was written under the French colonial administration; and its revision upon independence was biased toward an Arabist perspective. These historical narratives significantly influence the study of contemporary spatial phenomena, typically by undermining the validity of the vernacular mode of production of space. This study (1) reviews key myths pertaining to the spatial history and transformation in mountainous areas in Morocco; and (2) analyzes the contemporary mountain settlement of Ain Mediouna, Province of Taounate in light of a revised environmental narrative. Methods include the following: (1) historical document analysis; and (2) morphogenetic analysis …

Just Open A Window: Understanding The Vulnerability To Summer Heat Of A Mountain Community In The Western United States, Missoula, Mt, Julie J. Tompkins
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
How do we conceptualize vulnerability or resiliency to a natural hazard when it has not historically been understood as such? This study focuses on Missoula, located in mountains of western Montana, which has steadily grown by 1-2% per year to almost 75,000 residents. The formerly temperate quality of its winters and summers has also been changing. Projections from the 2017 Montana Climate Assessment estimate the state will experience a 2-5°F increase in mean annual air temperature over the next two decades, prompting city and county officials to plan for scenarios not formerly in their consideration. Of further concern is the …

Using Maximum Entropy To Model The Distribution Of An Endangered, Endemic Crayfish Cambarus Harti (Hobbs), James Kiourtsis
Theses and Dissertations
Cambarus harti is a state-listed endangered, endemic crayfish found only in three counties in mid-west Georgia. Several studies have attempted to characterize the biology and ecology of this crayfish, however data regarding the distribution of this rare, endemic crayfish remains limited. The International Union for Conservation of nature stated that in order to create an effective conservation plan, the known distribution must be expanded. Species distribution models are a cost-effective way to identify locations that have similar habitat characteristics to those with known populations. One species distribution model, Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt), is the preferred approach when modeling species, like C. …

Closing The Gap Of The Educational Needs Of Homeless Youth: A Case Study Of A Mobile School And Youth Learning Center In Los Angeles, Tiffany G. Edwards
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The number of homeless children and youth in the United States is on the rise (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2016). Between 2016 and 2017 in the Los Angeles County Homeless Count, there was a 41% increase in the number of homeless minors (The Los Angeles Service Authority, 2017). Education is key to bringing people out of poverty and ending the cycle of homelessness.
Using a socio-psychological lens, this case study examined the perceptions of six of the staff and volunteers at one site of the Griffon Learning Center, an organization trying to close the educational gaps of …
Epilogue: Indigenous Research: Future Directions, Deborah Mcgregor
Epilogue: Indigenous Research: Future Directions, Deborah Mcgregor
Articles & Book Chapters
Indigenous research is often viewed as a novel and recently conceived research paradigm with the aim of explicitly and actively supporting the self-determination goals of Indigenous peoples (National Aboriginal Health Organization [NAHO], 2005). While it may be “new” to academia, engaging in Indigenous inquiry, along with its resultant knowledge production and mobilization, is actually far from new. Indigenous societies, like any autonomous and sovereign nations, required regularly updated knowledge to meet existing and emerging challenges. Indigenous peoples have thus been seeking knowledge to support their existence as peoples and nations for millennia (Absolon & Willet, 2004; Cardinal, 2001; Castellano, 2000; …

Using Genograms To Explore Transgenerational Trauma And Racism In African American Couples, Hollie F. Campbell
All Capstone Projects
Despite a significant amount of literature on genograms in the ERIC, PsycINFO, and SocINDEX with full-text databases, only a handful of articles and book chapters address using genograms with African Americans. Of the articles that were found on the clinical application of the genogram as a counseling technique with African American couples, three provided a specific set of interview questions for the construction of a genogram, but did not explore the effects of transgenerational trauma and racism on these couples. Using a modified Delphi technique, the researcher solicited input from a panel of experts who developed and then assessed a …
Value Chains: Production Upstreamness And Downstreamness Revisited, Patricio Aroca, Randall Jackson
Value Chains: Production Upstreamness And Downstreamness Revisited, Patricio Aroca, Randall Jackson
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Measures devised to quantify value chain position have been used increasingly in recent years. While the constructs underlying these measures are meaningful, this paper identifies an overlooked implementation problem. Proposed algorithms have been applied as though the underlying data represent flows. Implementation data are drawn from modern input-output accounting frameworks that recognize secondary production explicitly. Unadjusted Use matrices are not conventional flows matrices because they do not identify the industries from which commodities originate. We demonstrate logical inconsistencies that arise, provide correct flow matrix formulations for upstreamness and downstreamness measures, and present empirical comparisons of correct and incorrect formulations.

In the United States, immigrant entrepreneurs start almost one third of all new businesses. However, many immigrant entrepreneurs lack the knowledge or expertise to evolve their businesses beyond the ethnic enclave where their businesses are located. This multiple case study captured the strategies used by five Latino immigrant business owners who successfully expanded their business beyond their ethnic enclave. The conceptual framework for this study was dynamic capabilities theory. Data were collected from interviews, company documents, and observations of the operation of businesses and owners. Member checking and transcript reviews were used to enhance the reliability and credibility of the …
Pediatric In-Patient Days Predictive Model, Dana Nicholson Bledsoe
Pediatric In-Patient Days Predictive Model, Dana Nicholson Bledsoe
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The study objective is to develop a predictive model for pediatric inpatient days based on ambulatory outpatient visits and emergency department visits. This model aims to study the relationship between ambulatory visits and inpatient days, and determine if in-patient days can be predicted based on sub-specialty practice. Such a model does not currently exist, and when created and validated such a model could be utilized for various important management decisions, including refined insight into inpatient capacity and operational efficiency for self-governing children’s hospitals with large sub-specialty practices. The data set was a sample of convenience from one health system in …

Spectral Signatures Of Submicron Scale Light-Absorbing Impurities In Snow And Ice Using Hyperspectral Microscopy, Farra Dal Anna, Susan Kaspari, James Beach, Thomas D. Bucheli, Michael Schaepman, Margit Schwikowski
Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Light-absorbing impurities (LAI) can darken snow and ice surfaces, reduce snow/ice albedo and accelerate melt. Efforts to allocate the relative contribution of different LAI to snow/ice albedo reductions have been limited by uncertainties in the optical properties of LAI. We developed a new method to measure LAI spectral reflectance at the submicron scale by modifying a Hyperspectral Imaging Microscope Spectrometer (HIMS). We present the instrument’s internal calibration, and the overall small influence of a particle’s orientation on its measured reflectance spectrum. We validated this new method through the comparison with a field spectroradiometer by measuring different standard materials. Measurements with …

Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya: Midline Results Report, Karen Austrian, Erica Soler-Hampejsek, Joyce Mumah, Beth Kangwana, Yohannes Dibaba Wado, Benta Abuya, Valsa Shah, John A. Maluccio
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
Many adolescent girls in Kenya face considerable risks and vulnerabilities that affect their education status, health, and general well-being. In addition to low educational attainment and health risks, other factors that impact education and health outcomes include household poverty, lack of economic independence, limited income-earning opportunities, illiteracy, violence, and social isolation. Younger adolescent girls who live in environments laden with these vulnerabilities are at risk of experiencing negative outcomes such as school dropout, early sexual initiation, unintended pregnancy, early marriage, and sexual and gender-based violence. The Adolescent Girls Initiative–Kenya (AGI-K) delivered multisectoral interventions to over 6,000 girls aged 11–15 in …
Epic Performance Through Invenção De Orfeu And ‘An Iliad:’ Two Instantiations Of Epic As Embodiment In The Americas, Patrice Rankine
Epic Performance Through Invenção De Orfeu And ‘An Iliad:’ Two Instantiations Of Epic As Embodiment In The Americas, Patrice Rankine
Classical Studies Faculty Publications
The body is a problem for epic performance: as a text, epic absents the body, and such absence is a barrier to the modern audience’s full participation. The modern poet might attempt to resolve this issue in one of two ways, either by using the absence as a rhetorical strategy or, alternatively, by reintroducing the body into performed epic. Jorge de Lima’s Invenção de Orfeu (The Invention of Orpheus) (1952) presents one extreme in addressing the absence of the poet’s body, through textual strategies, in his celebration of the literary condensation of past epics as embodiment. By contrast, …
Leveraging Overhead Imagery For Localization, Mapping, And Understanding, Scott Workman
Leveraging Overhead Imagery For Localization, Mapping, And Understanding, Scott Workman
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Ground-level and overhead images provide complementary viewpoints of the world. This thesis proposes methods which leverage dense overhead imagery, in addition to sparsely distributed ground-level imagery, to advance traditional computer vision problems, such as ground-level image localization and fine-grained urban mapping. Our work focuses on three primary research areas: learning a joint feature representation between ground-level and overhead imagery to enable direct comparison for the task of image geolocalization, incorporating unlabeled overhead images by inferring labels from nearby ground-level images to improve image-driven mapping, and fusing ground-level imagery with overhead imagery to enhance understanding. The ultimate contribution of this thesis …

Global Interdependence And Its Effects On Social Work Education In The United States, Mioara Diaconu, Laura Racovita-Szilagyi, Samantha Graham
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Social workers in the United States are confronted on a daily basis with challenges reflecting the imprint of globalization. Nevertheless, research shows that most of them are not trained to deal with the global realities of the 21st century, including how to use a rights-based sustainable development approach. This article proposes the use of a rights-based development model as opposed to a charity-based approach. It provides a rationale for implementing a global perspective in social work education that addresses sustainable development consistent with social work values and unique mission. Furthermore, it proposes that it is paramount to adhere to a …
Measuring Agricultural Drought And Uncertainty In Future Drought Projections, Junyu Lu
Measuring Agricultural Drought And Uncertainty In Future Drought Projections, Junyu Lu
Theses and Dissertations
Drought is a devastating, recurring, and widespread natural hazard that affects natural habitats, ecosystems, and economic and social sectors. Within the agricultural sector, droughts can reduce soil-water availability, affect water and soil quality, contribute to crop failures and pasture losses, and severely reduce crop yield. Effective drought quantification and early warning are critical for drought risk adaptation. Moreover, future drought risks could be exacerbated due to climate change. Modeling how climate change might influence future drought risks is of great importance in natural resources and water resources planning management. This dissertation has three parts. 1) The first part compares and …
Why Is No One Getting A Weave Of An Afro: Examining Culture, Economy, And Domestic Human Hair Consumption By African American Women, Brittani Young
Why Is No One Getting A Weave Of An Afro: Examining Culture, Economy, And Domestic Human Hair Consumption By African American Women, Brittani Young
Theses and Dissertations
The market for human hair, in the form of wigs and hair weaves, has grown exponentially, with African American women comprising a significant portion of consumers in the United States. Similar to other markets, the structure and patterns of hair consumption by African American women is the result of a variety of historical and geographical factors. In this thesis I investigate the role of African American women in the global human hair trade, and consider the implications of contemporary discourses around ‘good’ and ‘black’ hair in order to better understand trade in human hair. In particular, I use a combination …

Dancing On The Junction Of Mathematics And Bodily Experience, Julia Kremling, Nadine Arndt, Anja Roman, Melanie Zilm, Hauke Straehler-Pohl
The Mathematics Enthusiast
In this experimental paper, we document an experience of artistic research, initiated by searching an answer for the question "Is it possible to learn mathematics through dance?". We reflect on three different pathways towards experiencing mathematics in dance: theory, methodology and artistic experience. Following these pathways requires us to challenge established assumptions about mathematics and research and finally allows for exploring the dancing body itself as the potential space of mathematical knowledge. While we remain far from our initial aim of being able to make concrete suggestions about how to integrate dance as an integral part of school mathematics, this …

The True Purpose Of Mathematics Education: A Provocation, David Kollosche
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper features an anecdotic narration in which a fictive narrator, addressing the author of this paper, explains the functional role of mathematics education in the maintenance of the bureaucratic society. Drawing from critical philosophy and critical mathematics education, it is argued that the objective of mathematics education as realised in schools is to teach students to understand, accept, follow or at least ignore pre-defined rules as they are required for the bureaucratic administration of modern society. The theory of the narrator is underpinned with explanations that students offered in an interview study conducted by the author. Rather than supporting …
