Didier William, Nestor Armando Gil/Taller Workshop: Swarm, Pennsylvania Academy Of The Fine Arts, Laurel Mclaughlin, Mechella Yezernitskaya

Books, pamphlets, catalogues, and scrapbooks

Catalogue to the exhibition Swarm at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, June 30, 2018-September 9, 2018, curated by Laurel McLaughlin and Mechella Yezernitskaya (graduate students, History of Art, Bryn Mawr College).

The work of artists Didier William (b. 1983) and Nestor Armando Gil (b. 1971) beckons viewers, as an imperative, to physically and intellectually “swarm” conceptions of colonialism in order to disarm such narratives of power. The artists’ mixed media practices in printmaking, painting, collage, sculpture, installation, and performance are inflected by their Haitian and Cuban heritages as well as the diasporic communities they call home in …

Wine About It: How Climate Change Is Affecting International Wine Markets, Krysta Suzanne Gingue Jan 2018

Wine About It: How Climate Change Is Affecting International Wine Markets, Krysta Suzanne Gingue

Honors Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to understand the social context surrounding wine and how consumers and producers will act within the existing market structures to physical changes to wine due to climate change. After defining the socially embedded structure of market values, this paper questions how they will survive with the visible and invisible changes being made to wines and wine regions. Through various case studies the paper uncovers climate events happening across the world and how they will potentially change the economic landscape of wine markets. The different lenses required to understand the market lead to competing conclusions. …

Maximising Universities’ Civic Contribution : A Policy Paper., Ellen Hazelkorn, John Goddard Jan 2018

Maximising Universities’ Civic Contribution : A Policy Paper., Ellen Hazelkorn, John Goddard

Other resources

Civic engagement is widely used but often lacks a common understanding. This report provides clarity and context for civic mission in Welsh higher education. • The concept of “the public good” underpins Welsh public policy; actions to strengthen universities’ civic mission builds upon that commitment. • Universities’ potential for civic engagement in Wales is shaped by several factors: institutional origin and subsequent development, the Welsh, and UK, higher education policy context and the globalisation of higher education and the economy at large. • Within Wales, the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act has an important role to play in shaping civic …

The Relationship Between Universal Non-Classroom Variables Of Student Achievement And The Multiple Measurement Rating System For Minnesota Public High Schools: An Analysis Of Systems Accountability, Paul Henn Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Universal Non-Classroom Variables Of Student Achievement And The Multiple Measurement Rating System For Minnesota Public High Schools: An Analysis Of Systems Accountability, Paul Henn

Doctorate in Education

Current accountability trends in education require targeted strategic action planning (SAP) and school improvement planning (SIP). Data collected on student outcomes effectively informing SAP and SIP planning requires an understanding of relationships between internal classroom variables and external non-classroom variables of achievement. Minnesota’s multiple measurement rating (MMR) is a universal student outcome measurement used as the dependent variable that correlations from universal non-classroom factors of achievement can be based upon and will be the student outcome measurement for the current research. This study will examine the influence that five universal non-classroom factors of achievement have on student outcomes in Minnesota …

Equal Work, Stephanie Bornstein Jan 2018

Equal Work, Stephanie Bornstein

UF Law Faculty Publications

Most Americans have heard of the gender pay gap and the statistic that, today, women earn on average eighty cents to every dollar men earn. Far less discussed, there is an even greater racial pay gap. Black and Latino men average only seventy-one cents to the dollar of white men. Compounding these gaps is the “polluting” impact of status characteristics on pay: as women and racial minorities enter occupations formerly dominated by white men, the pay for those occupations goes down. Improvement in the gender pay gap has been stalled for nearly two decades; the racial pay gap is actually …

Respect The Land - It’S Like Part Of Us: A Traditional Use Study Of Inland Dena’Ina Ties To The Chulitna River & Sixmile Lake Basins, Lake Clark National Park And Preserve, Douglas Deur, Karen Evanoff, Jamie Hebert

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

For countless generations, Lake Clark has been home to the inland Dena’ina people. This unique and vast fresh-water lake complex sits at the intersection of sprawling tundra, taiga, and jagged cordillera, dotted with villages. Here, village life has been sustained by herds of caribou, shorelines populated by moose and beaver, vast runs of salmon ascending from Bristol Bay, and other natural assets. But the area’s uniqueness extends beyond its abundant natural resources. Also unique is the National Park Service (NPS) unit that has occupied the region known as Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) in recent decades.

The study …

A Curious Parental Right, Margaret Ryznar Jan 2018

A Curious Parental Right, Margaret Ryznar

SMU Law Review

The United States Supreme Court has not articulated the appropriate level of scrutiny for judicial review of interferences with the parents’ care, custody, and control of their children, despite determining it to be constitutionally fundamental. While some observers have called for the selection of a level of scrutiny to prevent inconsistencies among the lower courts, the complexity of the parental right has made it difficult for courts to use one level of scrutiny in such cases. To accommodate this complexity, this Article begins to build a new framework for conceptualizing the parental right in a way that explains and justifies …

Journeywoman: A Lone Arranger On The Final Frontier, Laura Frizzell

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

The state of Alaska has no shortage of fascinating history and culture. What it does lack, however, is the presence of enough trained archivists to ensure the proper treatment and preservation of historic and cultural collections across the state’s numerous, albeit small, repositories. As such, the Alaska State Historic Records Advisory Board (ASHRAB) has developed the Journeyman Archival Processing Program, which provides an interested lone arranger the opportunity to work in an Alaska archives for six weeks. In May 2017, I ventured to the 49th State in this very capacity. In this paper, I detail my experience working as …

Should Pornography That Patently Objectifies Women Be Banned?, Jared Kelly

Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas

The debate around banning pornography that objectifies women fractured the feminist movement. Future attempts to outlaw pornography will follow the precedent set forth in Osbourne v. Ohio and attempt to ban pornography in order to protect public health and safety.

Author information: Jared Kelly is a fourth-year political science and geography student at UC Berkeley. In his free time, he enjoys playing chess, hiking, classic films, and reading historical fiction.

Un/Learning Habituation Of Body-Mind Binary Through The Teaching- Learning Body/Mind, Jeong-Eun Rhee, Stephanie L. Curley, Sharon Subreenduth

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

A complex critique of how society constructs women of color in the academy combines with deeply personal interludes and a polyphony of scholarly voices to demonstrate ways that their objectified bodies can not only resist but also improvise as they question what it means to be different.

Protecting Florida's Marine Life With Conservation Drones, Daniel Grammes Jan 2018

Protecting Florida's Marine Life With Conservation Drones, Daniel Grammes

St. Thomas Law Review

This comment analyzes drones under current Fourth Amendment jurisprudence and focuses on the issues contributing to unsustainable fisheries in Florida. Part II explains the basic concept of drones and discusses privacy issues through the Fourth Amendment as well as Florida marine patrol statutes that are relevant to an analysis of drone technology. Part III highlights that Florida's fisheries are at an unsustainable level because there are not enough Florida marine patrol officers and the simplicity of disposing illegally harvested wildlife into the ocean. Part IV suggests that Florida adopt legislation authorizing a drone enforcement program for marine patrol. Part V …

Sustaining Temporal Peace: A Worldview For Sustainable Living Inspired By Saint Augustine’S Philosophy, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria Jan 2018

Sustaining Temporal Peace: A Worldview For Sustainable Living Inspired By Saint Augustine’S Philosophy, Joseph Emmanuel D. Sta. Maria

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

My paper aims to use the philosophical resources of Saint Augustine’s thought, particularly as found in the City of God, in order to sketch a basic worldview which can educate and lead people towards living lives that promote sustainable development. Specifically, I wish to show how Saint Augustine’s concepts of order, rightly ordered love, and temporal peace can serve as material to create a rough metaphysical framework in which human beings are understood to be an integrated part of a greater whole which is the earth. The ethical corollary of this framework is that human beings should act in such …

The School Connections Survey And Middle School Students: Concurrent Validity With The Strengths And Difficulties Questionnaire, Brandis Ruise Jan 2018

The School Connections Survey And Middle School Students: Concurrent Validity With The Strengths And Difficulties Questionnaire, Brandis Ruise

Open Access Dissertations

School connectedness has emerged as an important construct for the study of promoting resilience in youth in school settings. Potentially, the ability to identify youth before the onset of a disorder can be very beneficial, but there is much to consider in terms of the technical adequacy of a connections screening. A major concern pertains to whether such a screening can reliably and accurately identify students as at risk of academic failure or social and emotional difficulties. Findings suggest that self-reported peer connections on the School Connections Survey are significantly correlated with the Peer Relationship Problems subscale on the Strengths …

Legal Deserts: A Multi-State Perspective On Rural Access To Justice, Lisa R. Pruitt, Amanda L. Kool, Lauren Sudeall, Michele Statz, Danielle M. Conway, Hannah Haksgaard Jan 2018

Legal Deserts: A Multi-State Perspective On Rural Access To Justice, Lisa R. Pruitt, Amanda L. Kool, Lauren Sudeall, Michele Statz, Danielle M. Conway, Hannah Haksgaard

Faculty Publications By Year

Rural America faces an increasingly dire access-to-justice crisis, which serves to exacerbate the already disproportionate share of social problems afflicting rural areas. One critical aspect of the crisis is the dearth of information and research regarding the extent of the problem and its impacts. This Article begins to fill that gap by providing surveys of rural access to justice in six geographically, demographically, and economically varied states: California, Georgia, Maine, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In addition to providing insights about the distinct rural challenges confronting each of these states, the legal resources available, and existing policy responses, the Article …

User Wayfinding Strategies In Public Library Facilities, Lauren H. Mandel, Kelly A. Lemeur Jan 2018

User Wayfinding Strategies In Public Library Facilities, Lauren H. Mandel, Kelly A. Lemeur

Graduate School of Library and Information Studies Faculty Publications

An experiment in a public library demonstrates that Passini's conceptual framework of wayfinding can be applied to public library patron wayfinding behavior. Participants were asked to think aloud while completing prescribed wayfinding tasks. Findings indicate that library patrons use all five of Passini's strategies to varying degrees, supporting the need for further research testing this framework with library patrons. Participants were given varying level of details on Passini's strategies prior to completing the wayfinding tasks, and that intervention had no significant effect on the results.

Bridging Gaps Between Conservation Action And Policy On Small Island Developing States – Case Analog Of The Republic Of Mauritius, Pricila Iranah Jan 2018

Bridging Gaps Between Conservation Action And Policy On Small Island Developing States – Case Analog Of The Republic Of Mauritius, Pricila Iranah

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Mauritius, a small island state in the Indian Ocean, is a biodiversity hotspot with highly threatened forest ecosystems. It is also a country where environmental and conservation programs have been successful in the past. However, the issue of funding has received relatively less attention and national park systems are chronically underfunded. As part of assessing the potential for local funding, we assessed the demand for forest recreation. Recreation in forest ecosystems is one of the cornerstones of modern nature-based tourism. Tourism is increasingly a favored tool to promote conservation of natural forests, especially in developing countries where conservation financing can …

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article articulates the experience of three professors from different disciplines, teaching at three levels of University Studies, Portland State University's general education program, for whom the toggling between personal/professional critical practices and use of reflective practices in the classroom has led to transformative learning experiences for them and their students. It describes the specific reflective tools and methods they used for teaching and professional development, and considers the challenges to sustaining critical reflection and how those challenges might be addressed. The authors argue that critical reflection (CR) is an important practice for teachers and students of general education. In …

An Exploration Of Care Coordination And Management For The Medicaid Hiv Population Within Upstate New York Health Homes, Esemikelu Oghenejobo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Within the U.S. healthcare system, there has been a renewed focus to improve the delivery of care services, to increase the quality of care, and to decrease costs. The Affordable Care Act introduced the health home (HH) model to serve vulnerable, Medicaid populations who are experiencing difficulty managing their care and navigating complex healthcare systems. The HH was a voluntary state option; of which New York State (NYS) chose to participate. Additionally, NYS was granted a Medicaid 1115 waiver to fully implement an ambitious re-design of NYS’s Medicaid program. NYS invested in the HH as a key model to address …

College Choice In Distance-Based Nursing Programs, Jill Lansing Jan 2018

College Choice In Distance-Based Nursing Programs, Jill Lansing

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The expansion and diversification of postsecondary education in the United States has led to greater options for students and prospective students for pursuing a college degree. An important trend in higher education today is distance education. Despite the growing prevalence of distance learning opportunities and the expanding body of research on distance education, research on the college-going decisions of distance learners is sparse. As more students enroll in distance-based higher education programs, it is increasingly important to understand how and why students make the decision to enroll in collegiate degree-granting programs. This study bridges the college choice and distance education …

Understanding The Relationship Between Winter Hawaii Precipitation And North Pacific Climate Variability For Past And Present Climate Conditions, Siyu Li Jan 2018

Understanding The Relationship Between Winter Hawaii Precipitation And North Pacific Climate Variability For Past And Present Climate Conditions, Siyu Li

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Kona lows (KLs) are a type of seasonal cut-off cyclones in the North Pacific around the Hawaiian Islands during the cold season month (Oct.-Apr.). KLs are important for the annual rainfall budget of the Hawaiian Islands. This study investigates what controls the winter precipitation variability over the Hawaiian Islands in the present-day climate and within a long-term paleoclimate simulation. ERA-interim data from 1979-2014 are used for the present-day analysis of the large-scale circulation. The potential vorticity is used as a measure of extratropical synoptic activity. The Hawaii Rainfall Index is from the Rainfall Atlas of Hawaii (seasonal means, 1920-2012). For …

Before Nature's Nation : Ecological Thought And Early American Poetry, Joshua Bartlett Jan 2018

Before Nature's Nation : Ecological Thought And Early American Poetry, Joshua Bartlett

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This project examines early American encounters with the natural world through the context of contemporary ecocriticism. In readings of Puritan poets Anne Bradstreet and Michael Wigglesworth, African-American poet Phillis Wheatley, and Mohegan minister Samson Occom, it demonstrates how poetic attentions to nature transformed collective antagonism toward the “howling wilderness” into personal feelings of affection and wonder. Likewise, it develops an understanding of the “ecological” that is both methodology, a way of thinking about specific things, such as trees or stones, and epistemology, a kind of thinking that emphasizes relational perception. It then situates these experiences amidst both canonical Americanist scholarship …

"Remarks On A March" : A Female Perspective On Gender, Rank, And Imperial Identities During The French And Indian War, Erica Ingrid Nuckles Jan 2018

"Remarks On A March" : A Female Perspective On Gender, Rank, And Imperial Identities During The French And Indian War, Erica Ingrid Nuckles

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation expands and complicates the study of women who accompanied and contributed to the British army in the French and Indian War (1754-1763), while also exploring the ways in which the war affected gender, rank, and imperial identities within the army and, more broadly, the British colonies in North America. This is done through the lens of Charlotte Browne, a British middling widow and mother who served as matron of the British army’s General Hospital for the entirety of the war. Browne kept a journal for much of her service that traces her journey with the army from London …

Visual Variables On Mobile Devices : An Empirical Study Of Their Roles In Gaining Spatial Awareness, Andrew Donghyun Kim Jan 2018

Visual Variables On Mobile Devices : An Empirical Study Of Their Roles In Gaining Spatial Awareness, Andrew Donghyun Kim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

More people are used to and comfortable using mobile devices compared to traditional paper maps. Multiple studies have suggested that user's spatial awareness tends to decrease as the user passively follows directions on a mobile device with diminished screen size. One way to overcome the shortcoming of the small screen is through displaying discrete off-screen objects (landmarks) located beyond the extent of mobile map displays. The current study empirically examines the effectiveness of using visual variables including size, fuzziness, and transparency to embed distance and direction information in implicit icons of off-screen objects. This study investigates the effectiveness of these …
