Using Gis For Determining Optimal Refugee Camp Placement In Western Thailand, Christopher Pierce Apr 2018

Using Gis For Determining Optimal Refugee Camp Placement In Western Thailand, Christopher Pierce

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Refugee camps are often over crowded, which can create security issues and create strain on the camp infrastructure, supplies, officials, and other areas. ‘GIS for Good’ created methodology to determine optimal placement for refugee camps in Uganda using GIS. Their model focused on environmental (ie. Distance to water, land use, etc.) and social factors (population density, distance to education and health facilities, etc.). These factors were reclassified to rank most optimal sites 10 and least optimal sites 1. Factors were also weighted to give more emphasis to distance from water, slope, and food suitability sites compared to other factors. These …

Impact Of Tibetan Household Livelihood Capital On Tourism Participation Level: A Case Of Jiaju Tibetan Village In Garze, Yiyi Zhang

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

As more people move from countryside to cities and those left behind struggle to sustain livelihoods, China’s 19th National Congress of the Communist Party has prioritized the implementation of rural revitalization. A number of studies have examined drivers of livelihood transition from farming to non-farm activities, especially the participation in tourism against the backdrop of rural tourism development. There are, however, few studies identifying ways to measure tourism participation level or discussing how household-level capitals influence the decision on tourism participation made by Tibetan ethnic households. This article assessed the roles of livelihood capitals in the adoption of tourism activities …

Elephants Of The Pink City, Jaipur, India: A Study Of The Captive Elephant Welfare And Management Practice In Ex-Situ Environmental Conditions, Ayan Sasmal

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Although the arid Rajasthan desert is far from native elephant habitat, captive elephants (Elephas maximus) are managed by some private owners in Jaipur. The semi-arid Jaipur experiences a very hot summer and an extreme cold winter. Along with this, improper management practice and tremendous work load has changed the captive elephant normal life drastically. This study aims to identify the gaps in the management practice of captive elephants. A total of 72 captive elephants were studied in Jaipur. Data about the captive elephant status, veterinary care and the socio-economic conditions of their mahouts were collected through daily observations and conducting …

On Major Naval Operations, Milan Vego Apr 2018

On Major Naval Operations, Milan Vego

Naval War College Review

Western naval theoreticians and planners in recent years have neglected the study of major naval operations, of the sort carried out by the U.S. Navy in World War II. But it would be dangerous to assume that major naval operations are of simply historical interest; they should be thought about more systematically.

Carving Up The East China Sea, Peter Dutton Apr 2018

Carving Up The East China Sea, Peter Dutton

Naval War College Review

So far, China and Japan seem to be talking past each other in their dispute over the East China Sea. But the stakes are high, given the possibility that supposedly “managed” conflict can result in unintended war. Recent practice in international law could chart a way forward.

Addressing Virtual Work Challenges: Learning From The Field, Julia Eisenberg, Aparna Krishnan

Organization Management Journal

Companies increasingly rely on virtual teams. Despite numerous studies examining the challenges of geographically dispersed work, the findings are often mixed. The purpose of this article is to identify themes of challenges associated with virtual collaborations based on academic literature and do a gap analysis with industry trends. First, we identify five overarching categories of virtual team challenges based on reviewing the latest trends in the academic literature: trust and relationships, communication and knowledge sharing, perceptions and decision making, leadership, and diversity. Second, we utilize these categories to qualitatively code and analyze the company data from the Fortune Best Places …

Life Sciences Faculty Research

This study investigated near surface hydrologic processes and plant response over a 1600 m mountain-valley gradient located in the Great Basin of North America (Nevada, U.S.A.) as part of a long-term climate assessment study. The goal was to assess shifts in precipitation, soil water status and associated drainage with elevation and how this influenced evapotranspiration and plant cover/health estimated by a satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), all to better understand how water is partitioned in a mountain valley system. Data were acquired during a three-year period from meteorological stations located in five plant communities ranging in elevation from 1756 …

Background: In recent years, more than half of new HIV infections in the United States occur among African Americans in the Southeastern United States. Spatial epidemiological analyses can inform public health responses in the Deep South by identifying HIV hotspots and community-level factors associated with clustering.

Objective: The goal of this study was to identify and characterize HIV clusters in Mississippi through analysis of state-level HIV surveillance data.

Methods: We used a combination of spatial epidemiology and statistical modeling to identify and characterize HIV hotspots in Mississippi census tracts (n=658) from 2008 to 2014. We conducted spatial analyses of all …

Relating Diets And Food Availability To Long-Term Population Trends Of Lesser Scaup Wintering On Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Clay Michael Stroud Apr 2018

Relating Diets And Food Availability To Long-Term Population Trends Of Lesser Scaup Wintering On Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, Clay Michael Stroud

LSU Master's Theses

Lake Pontchartrain provides wintering habitat for a continentally-significant proportion of lesser scaup (Aythya affinis). Mid-winter aerial surveys indicate dramatic variation in annual scaup abundance (0–1,194,907), though the mechanisms driving fluctuations have not been previously investigated. In response to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, species composition, abundance, and size structure of benthic invertebrate populations in Lake Pontchartrain exhibit drastic variability among years. Given that wintering scaup feed primarily on mollusks, environmental disturbances have the potential to influence scaup dynamics on the estuary by altering the benthic community. To diagnose trophic linkages and variation in scaup abundance, we collected ducks (n=60) …

Preservation And Reformation, Yedi Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT Taking the conservation and development of the Old Town of Luoyang as an example, this thesis explores the issue of largescale renovation and reconstruction of old city in the background of urbanization, and attempts to seek the balance between old town preservation and local residents’ life quality enhancement. It is needing to be aware that, as a result of the layering and intertwining of cultural and natural values over time, the urban historical heritage includes both tangible and intangible components. To protect historical heritage in the city, we should not only just imitate the history scenes, more importantly, it …

Social Enterprise And Community Resilience: Examining A Greek Response To Turbulent Times, N Apostolopoulos, R Newbery, M Gkartzios Apr 2018

Social Enterprise And Community Resilience: Examining A Greek Response To Turbulent Times, N Apostolopoulos, R Newbery, M Gkartzios

Plymouth Business School

Using community resilience and institutional entrepreneurship as conceptual lens, the paper explores whether support for social enterprises in non-metropolitan Greece has led to resilient social systems. Whilst drawing on narratives of enabling a bottom-up response to market failure, rather than radical or reformist adaptation, social enterprise may have produced a reluctant and state reliant response which may weaken the resilience of communities to survive continued austerity. The research selected and interviewed 30 social enterprises operating within non-metropolitan Greece during 2016. It contributes to knowledge through a novel framing, which clarifies that social enterprise in Greece remains a top-down governance process …

Linguistic Political Ecology With The Ngäbe Indigenous People Of Panama, Ginés A. Sánchez Arias Apr 2018

Linguistic Political Ecology With The Ngäbe Indigenous People Of Panama, Ginés A. Sánchez Arias

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Indigenous communities from all corners of the globe live in uncertain times. From the vantage point of their “remote" lands, they undergo some of globalization’s most harmful externalities. Their homes become increasingly harder to maintain as extractive industries, development schemes, clandestine land grabs, and national bureaucracies encroach creating new colonial lands. First by assimilation, and then integration, these processes systematically undermine indigenous culture and autonomy. In place of such destructive coloniality, indigenous societies shelter unique ecological and linguistic knowledge that continues to serve their progress. This research applies lessons learned from studying with Ngäbe communities of western Panama, towards a …

Social Studies Teacher–Athletic Coaches' Experiences Coping With Role Conflict R2, Caroline Conner, Chara Haeussler Bohan

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

The current study provides insight into the experiences of the most common content area teacher–coaches: social studies teacher–coaches. Substantial research findings support the idea that occupying the dual role of teacher–coach may lead to role conflict, role overload, and burnout in teacher–coaches. The purpose of the study is to illuminate the unique stressors associated with occupying the dual role of social studies teacher and athletic coach (SSTC) simultaneously, and to discover ways in which SSTCs manage such conflict. Through a case study of three football SSTCs in the southeastern United States, we explored participants’ experiences with role conflict, role overload, …

Grand Strategies For Dealing With Other Statesin The New, New World Order, James F. Miskel Apr 2018

Grand Strategies For Dealing With Other Statesin The New, New World Order, James F. Miskel

Naval War College Review

The art of statecraft has often involved efforts to improve the security of one state by taking advantage of the power and influence of other states. This is, for example, why a state typically seeks to forge military alliances with others. It is also why some states provide economic and military support to client or de- pendent states and why some advocate the formation of multistate trading blocs. The theory behind the trading-bloc strategy is that cooperation on secu- rity matters is more likely when there are strong economic and other mutually beneficial connections among the members of the bloc.

Terrorism And The New Security Dilemma, Philip G. Cerny Apr 2018

Terrorism And The New Security Dilemma, Philip G. Cerny

Naval War College Review

Since 11 September 2001, the primary focus of American foreign policy has os- tensibly been the “war on terror,” although the George W. Bush administra- tion has also given priority to other objectives, such as Iraq and national missile defense. This emphasis on the threat of terrorism is extremely valuable for ana- lytical purposes, because it draws attention to key aspects of security today—in particular the central paradox of how to deal with the increasingly diffuse char- acter of threats with the means available to state actors, in what is still to a large extent an interstate system.

“A Cooperative Strategy For 21st Century Seapower”—A View From Outside, Geoffrey Till

Naval War College Review

Many navies around the world are thinking through their own strategic conundrums in matching resources to commitments and so are watching with great interest how the U.S. Navy “squares this circle.” How will its strategic thinking develop? How will it structure the fleet? How will it operate? How should everyone else respond?

Geography, Technology, And British Naval Strategyin The Dreadnought Era, Jon Tetsuro Sumida Apr 2018

Geography, Technology, And British Naval Strategyin The Dreadnought Era, Jon Tetsuro Sumida

Naval War College Review

In The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660–1783, Alfred Thayer Mahan ar- gued that the effective deployment of naval force had determined the outcomes of the great European wars of the eighteenth century. Many, if not most, readers believed that this historical survey was the basis of related major arguments that were applicable to the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first was that naval supremacy was the prerequisite to economic prosperity and international political preeminence.

Japanese Maritime Thought: If Not Mahan, Who?, Toshi Yoshihara, James R. Holmes

Naval War College Review

The late Colonel John Boyd, who knew a thing or two about strategic thought, was fond of declaring that excellence in warfare and other human endeavors depended on people, ideas, and hardware—in that order.1 We postulate that Japan has lost sight of this commonsense axiom, allowing strategic thought to atrophy.

President’S Forum, J.L. Shuford Apr 2018

President’S Forum, J.L. Shuford

Naval War College Review

Debates about the number and types of ships needed in the American navy have been going on since before we even had a country! Heated discussions on the purpose and size of a navy took place at meetings of the Continental Congress in 1775, and the Congress ultimately authorized the construction of only two armed sailing ships. Similar debate continues to this day. The high cost of shipbuilding and the need to balance land, sea, and air forces have driven the active fleet to below the three-hundred- ship level.
