Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Submarine channels have been important throughout geologic time for feeding globally significant volumes of sediment from land to the deep sea. Modern observations show that submarine channels can be sculpted by supercritical turbidity currents (seafloor sediment flows) that can generate upstream-migrating bedforms with a crescentic planform. In order to accurately interpret supercritical flows and depositional environments in the geologic record, it is important to be able to recognize the depositional signature of crescentic bedforms. Field geologists commonly link scour fills containing massive sands to crescentic bedforms, whereas models of turbidity currents produce deposits dominated by back-stepping beds. Here we reconcile …

The Implementation Of Religious Literacy Curricula In American Public Schools, Natalie Lemay Apr 2018

The Implementation Of Religious Literacy Curricula In American Public Schools, Natalie Lemay

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Religious literacy is defined as a basic level of knowledge and understanding of major world religions and beliefs. Most of the literature on the subject agrees that students benefit from exposure to other religions, both civically and mentally. The Religious Freedom Institute of the Newseum has created a curriculum in order to bring nonpartisan religious education back into public schools with the goal of increasing tolerance for communities of different faiths. The curriculum, titled the Georgia 3Rs project, is being piloted in Georgia, a predominantly Christian evangelical state. In my thesis, I study the effectiveness of prior examples of religious …

Classical Literature And The Retroaction Of Socialist Ideology—The Sovietization Of A Medieval Georgian Epic Poem And Its Mysterious Author, Diego Benning Wang Apr 2018

Classical Literature And The Retroaction Of Socialist Ideology—The Sovietization Of A Medieval Georgian Epic Poem And Its Mysterious Author, Diego Benning Wang

Madison Historical Review

Shota Rustaveli, presumed author of the medieval Georgian epic poem vepkhistqaosani (The Knight in the Panther's Skin), was one of the most celebrated cultural and historical figures in Soviet Georgia. However, not much is known about Rustaveli apart from his work. In this essay, I argue that a series of policies under the Soviet government transformed Rustaveli into a national symbol of Georgia, but the celebration of Rustaveli and his poem scarcely deviated from the ideological guidelines of the Soviet state. In discussing the impact and legacy of the Soviet promotion of Rustaveli, I purport to highlight the "national in …

How Do You Love?: Conversations About Love And Lust In Morocco, Sweden, And The United States, Margaret Finlay, Audrey Brosnan, Autumn Fraser, Emily Morrison, Julia Maxon, Paris Summers

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Unlike other curriculums, sex education is widely varied in the methods of teaching, what age an individual receives this education, and what specifically is taught. This problem is universal, as often times, too many sensitivities concerning the effect it will have on a student’s character influence the outcome of sex education. Because of this, students and adults go through life with an inadequate understanding of their own sexual health. Ignorance about sexual health leads to unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, as well us an unfortunate confusion about one’s own body and the bodies of others. The …

The Value Of Silence In Finland: A Geographic And Cultural Perspective, Meghan E. Kuhns Apr 2018

The Value Of Silence In Finland: A Geographic And Cultural Perspective, Meghan E. Kuhns

Silence-based tourism, an emerging tourism sector in Finland, is relatively understudied. This research is focused around three specific areas: 1) the geographical and historical context of silence farms (developed and potential), 2) the value of silence to the Finnish culture and economy, and 3) the role and motivations’ of Finnish farmers as they expand into this area of silence tourism, to cultivate and preserve silence spaces, and their perceptions regarding the effects that silence farms and silence experiences have on tourists. In this context, silence is referred to as natural sounds such as the chirping of birds, the rustling of …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Chasing Plenty: A Documentary on Food Security in Montana Our GLI group aims to examine the following question: how will climate change impact food security? To address this question we are conducting interviews in Montana. Despite being an agricultural state, many Montanans struggle with food insecurity, and are left without plentiful or healthy options for food. We aim to research this issue by interviewing local community members involved in food distribution. The interview data will be compiled in a short documentary discussing current issues in food security, how these problems are likely to evolve in the future, and propose solutions …

“A Montana Ski Town And Solutions To Its Persistent Housing Crisis”, Donald Mcbath

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Ski towns across the Rocky Mountain West are facing the inter-connected problems of rising housing prices and shortages of labor. These local issues have led to severe challenges associated with the lack of affordable housing. My study focuses on three key elements that contribute to the problem of affordable housing in the booming ski town of Whitefish, Montana. These elements include: (1) the geographical and historical context that makes this community similar to other ski towns in this region; (2) the economic and land use planning factors that constrain the affordable housing market; and (3) the limited sustainable solutions to …

Mapping Mount Saint Helens: Capturing The Volcano's Geomorphologic Change Over Time, Jennifer Haas Apr 2018

Mapping Mount Saint Helens: Capturing The Volcano's Geomorphologic Change Over Time, Jennifer Haas

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

On the morning of May 18, 1980, in the state of Washington, Mount Saint Helens violently erupted, causing the reshaping of the volcano and the largest historical landslide on Earth. This volcanic episode caused significant modifications to the surrounding landscape, including the loss of 70% of the volcano’s glacier mass and 1,314 feet of elevation. Capturing this dynamic environment cartographically has been a challenge. This paper reports on a study aimed at investigating a particular type of cartography called geomorphological mapping, which represents landscapes and their processes of change over time. The study also applies this type of mapping to …

Waves Of Change: Political Violence And Displacement During The Internal War In Peru (1980-2000), Sarah Benewith

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

This investigation responds to the problem of the approximate 600,000 people that were internally displaced from 1980 to 2000 due to the political violence that took place between the Peruvian State and insurgent groups like Sendero Luminoso. Specifically, I investigate the relationship between political violence and internal displacement, as well as the nature of the personal experiences of the displaced. Developing the investigation in Cusco and Lima, I utilize a combination of archival revision, direct observation, and interviews. The interviews, from indigenous people displaced from Apurímac during the Internal War, serve as testimonies which I compare with other testimonies collected …

Is Oil Nationalization For The Nation? The Causal Nature Of Institutional Impacts And Economic Hindrances Of The “Resource Curse”, Imani Sherrill Apr 2018

Is Oil Nationalization For The Nation? The Causal Nature Of Institutional Impacts And Economic Hindrances Of The “Resource Curse”, Imani Sherrill

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

This thesis examines the theory of the “oil resource curse” and how structural, demographic, and economic variables presented by previous scholars and academics do not fully unpack the narrative and mechanisms of how the “resource curse” is developed. Different oil wealthy nations around the world have varying levels of development. Why? Adding to the existing literature of the Resource curse and Institutions, my hypothesis remains that through institutions that history has developed, mechanisms, such as oil nationalization lead to different varieties of the economic resource curse. Using a most-difference case scenario in a historical analysis, statistical and empirical data will …

Preferences Towards Working In Culturally Diverse Teams At Different Stages Of The Entrepreneurial Process, Katarzyna Stankiewicz, Paweł Ziemiański

European Management Studies

As entrepreneurial teams become prevalent, it is important to study factors related to their creation and effectiveness. The goal of the current research was to analyze preferences towards working in a multicultural team (MCT) versus a single culture team (SCT) at different stages of the entrepreneurial process. The study involved students originating from various cultures with previous experience in both SCTs and MCTs as participants. The preference towards working in a multicultural team was found to be stronger during preliminary stages of an entrepreneurial process. On the other hand, realization and assessment was in turn more strongly related with the …

Blending Conflicting Logics By Social Entrepreneurs – The Role Of Entrepreneurial Mindset, Agnieszka Żur, Christiane Naumann

European Management Studies

Social entrepreneurs, regardless the geographical context or legal form of their enterprises blend commercial market logic and social good logic. We argue that the concept entrepreneurial mindset plays a key role in understanding how blending conflicting logics management activities of social entrepreneurs occurs. This paper aims to identify the role of particular entrepreneurial mindset attributes in enabling social entrepreneurs to successfully act simultaneously in social and market contexts. Through pursuing interpretative phenomenological research with seven social entrepreneurs from five different countries, we have identified three different schemes of blending social and commercial logics. Our findings have also identified the intensity …

Characterizing Severe Weather Potential In Synoptically Weakly Forced Thunderstorm Environments, Paul W. Miller, Thomas L. Mote Apr 2018

Characterizing Severe Weather Potential In Synoptically Weakly Forced Thunderstorm Environments, Paul W. Miller, Thomas L. Mote

Faculty Publications

Abstract. Weakly forced thunderstorms (WFTs), short-lived convection forming in synoptically quiescent regimes, are a contemporary forecasting challenge. The convective environments that support severe WFTs are often similar to those that yield only non-severe WFTs and, additionally, only a small proportion of individual WFTs will ultimately produce severe weather. The purpose of this study is to better characterize the relative severe weather potential in these settings as a function of the convective environment. Thirty-one near-storm convective parameters for > 200 000 WFTs in the Southeastern United States are calculated from a high-resolution numerical forecasting model, the Rapid Refresh (RAP). For each parameter, …

Devonian Stromatoporoid Interactions At The Falls Of The Ohio State Park, Clarksville, Indiana, Morgan Sierra Hall Apr 2018

Devonian Stromatoporoid Interactions At The Falls Of The Ohio State Park, Clarksville, Indiana, Morgan Sierra Hall

Undergraduate Theses

Stromatoporoids are calcitic sponges that occurred in the fossil record from the Early Ordovician to Late Devonian period. These sponges interacted with other organisms, especially rugose and tabulate corals. Some corals appear to benefit from the rigidity of stromatoporoids in response to turbulent waters. Stromatoporoids and many corals went extinct during the Frasnian-Famennian crisis when paleoenvironmental parameters were shifting. Studying the relationships between these taxa may provide insight to their vulnerability during the extinction.

This research was performed at the Falls of the Ohio in Clarksville, Indiana. Organisms in the Coral Zone were studied using transect sampling. Each fossil along …

Parks And Trail Hubs As Green Gyms, Christine Vogt, Cybil Kho Apr 2018

Parks And Trail Hubs As Green Gyms, Christine Vogt, Cybil Kho

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Research on the influence of community, neighborhood, and park design on physical activity has gained interest in the 21st century. One dominant park amenity considered by urban planners and park designers are trails and trail hubs to a park system and regional trail network. Trail hubs act as an intersection where multiple trails converge and visitor’s services such as parking, restrooms, water, or exercise areas are provided. Trail hubs are increasingly included in new park designs or in modifications of older parks to facilitate active transportation and active physical activity levels for better health conditions. Few studies have examined …

The Preservation Of The Colonial Spanish Horse And Robert E. Brislawn, Sr., Gretchen L. Patterson Ms.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Preservation of the Colonial Spanish Horse and

Robert E. Brislawn, Sr.

In 1493, the Spanish horse importation to the Caribbean islands provided an important stimulus to American exploration as an agent of transportation. In the late nineteenth century, the necessity of horses declined with the advent of railroads and motorized vehicles. Reduction of Native American populations through wars, disease, and forfeiture of territory also contributed to less reliance on horses. Born in 1890, Robert E. Brislawn, Sr., a dedicated horseman, decided to collect and preserve the best Spanish-type horses that he could locate as links to western heritage. From …

From Sensors To Knowledge: The Challenge Of Training The Next Generation Of Data Analysts, Sonya A. H. Mcmullen, Troy Henderson, Scott Burgess, Patti J. Clark, David Ison

Publications

With the advent of commercial-off-the-shelf sensors for use in a variety of applications, integration with analytical software tools, and expansion of available archived datasets, there is a critical need to address the problem of transforming resultant data into comprehensible, actionable information for decision-makers through rigorous analysis. In previous research the participating authors have emphasized that users are often faced with the situation in which they are “drowning in a sea of data” but still “thirsting for knowledge”. The availability of analysis software, tools, and techniques provide opportunities for information collection of ever increasing complexity, but the need for the training …

Experiencing Porcelain As A Landscape, P Davis Apr 2018

Experiencing Porcelain As A Landscape, P Davis

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In the late eighteenth century, the Plymouth Porcelain Factory produced sets of figures designed to represent what were then known as the four Continents: Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. As objects of middle-class consumption, they were designed not only to represent current ideas about the qualities of these continents, but also to allow consumers to have a relationship with places of which they had no first-hand knowledge, creating a geographical experience. Taking the historical nature of these figurines into consideration, this research considers whether it is possible to co-opt such artefacts into a twenty-first century geographical experience. Using a …

What Is And What Was: The Ottoman Empire According To A 19th Century American Diplomat, Alfredo Gonzalez

Voces Novae

“What Is and What Was: The Ottoman Empire According to a 19th Century American Diplomat” is an intellectual history of David Porter, a navy officer turned diplomat, during the early years of his post to the Ottoman Empire. This research analyzes Porter’s writings to ascertain what influenced his perceptions of the Ottoman Empire and its people. To a greater extent, this project seeks to understand the construction of “the Other” and whether or not Porter understood the empire as such. Ultimately, this research would argue that the common understanding of how American’s viewed the Middle East at this time was …

Macarthur And Frozen Chosin: An Analysis Of The Press Coverage Of Douglas Macarthur During The Battle Of Chosin Reservoir, Chris Collodel

Voces Novae

The Korean war included the rapid deterioration of the military career of one of America's most decorated generals. During the cold Korean November of 1950, General Douglas MacArthur’s 8th Army and X Corps army units were in a race along the Korean coasts toward the border with China. Unlike previous endeavors, MacArthur’s “Home by Christmas” offensive ended in defeat, with the United Nation’s forces retreating back over the 38th Parallel after a Chinese counter attack. The Battle of Chosin Reservoir took place during this offensive and lasted from 27 November to 13 December, 1950. Most scholars agree that in retrospect …

Les Éléments De L'Empire: Cultural Construction And Civilization In 19th Century French Algeria, David Wells

Voces Novae

“Les Éléments de l’Empire: Cultural Construction and Civilization in 19th Century French Algeria” examines the mentality behind the 19th century colonization of French Algeria, via a French museum established in Algiers in 1838. French documents from the period pertaining to the museum overwhelmingly reveal an association between retrieving artifacts from the Roman Empire and establishing the French Empire in Algeria. Yet “indigenous” artifacts receive progressively greater attention as colonization proceeds. The museum’s founder, Adrien Berbrugger, plays a particularly important role, as does the museum’s connection to the academic community and the colonial administration. Consequently, this paper also examines the historical …
