The Legacy Of The Historic Canal System In Central New York: Evaluation Of Cultural Ecosystem Services In The Lower Mohawk River, Ny, Madison Corbeil May 2018

The Legacy Of The Historic Canal System In Central New York: Evaluation Of Cultural Ecosystem Services In The Lower Mohawk River, Ny, Madison Corbeil

Geography and Planning

The canal system of New York State served as a catalyst for industry and generated a significant amount of revenue over the course of its useful life as a public work. However, with the emergence of faster, more efficient methods of transport, much of the canal was abandoned or filled during the early 1900’s.While these portions of the canal no longer offer their former economic value as a trade route, the land they once inhabited continues to serve the surrounding communities in a variety of ways. This paper in particular focuses on the Cultural Ecosystem Services provided by the land …

Abstract

This report presents the results of vegetation monitoring efforts in 2017 at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument (AGFO) by the Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN) and the Northern Great Plains Fire Effects Program (NGPFire). This was the seventh year of field work conducted by NGPN at AGFO.

In 2017, crew members from NGPN visited six long-term plant community monitoring (PCM) plots and NGPFire visited eight additional PCM and fire plant community monitoring (FPCM) plots to collect data on the plant communities at AGFO. This collaborative effort is part of a long-term monitoring program established to better …

Community Strain And Familial Dysfunction: The Influence Of County Characteristics On Child Maltreatment, Katherine Mobley May 2018

Community Strain And Familial Dysfunction: The Influence Of County Characteristics On Child Maltreatment, Katherine Mobley

Honors Theses

Child maltreatment does not happen equally across communities. Instead, in some places it is nearly non-existent (less than 1 out of every 11000 children) while in others it is experienced by nearly 10% of the population. This research examined how demographic factors relate to the rate of child abuse and neglect at the county level and found that a decline in economic stability, lack of post-secondary education, an inability to reach financial stability, and the rate of drug usage in a county significantly contributed to the child maltreatment rate. Durkheim’s Theory of Anomie and Merton and Agnew’s Strain Theories were …

Shareholder Coordination And Stock Price Informativeness, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Bin Wang May 2018

Shareholder Coordination And Stock Price Informativeness, Incheol Kim, Christos Pantzalis, Bin Wang

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We show that firm‐specific information is more likely to be incorporated into stock prices when firms have stronger shareholder coordination. The premise of our work is that geographic proximity reduces communication costs among shareholders, thereby leading to better coordination. The positive coordination‐informativeness relation is driven mainly by shareholder coordination among dedicated and independent institutions. We further show that the positive effect is more pronounced for firms with weaker governance mechanisms, suggesting that shareholder coordination could serve as a substitute conduit of price discovery. Lastly, we propose that shareholder coordination improves stock price informativeness through the channel of enhanced voluntary disclosure …

An Evaluation Of The Bgsu Herpetarium As An Educational Tool, Katherine Herzog May 2018

An Evaluation Of The Bgsu Herpetarium As An Educational Tool, Katherine Herzog

To assess these impacts, a variety of qualitative and quantitative data was collected. Six …

How Public Transit Agencies Maintain Regulatory Compliance While Using Transportation Network Companies, Aaron Vogel May 2018

How Public Transit Agencies Maintain Regulatory Compliance While Using Transportation Network Companies, Aaron Vogel

Master's Projects

The recent rise of Transportation Network Companies (TNC) has prompted some public transit agencies to collaborate with them to enhance their mobility options. Agencies around the country in cities like Pinellas Park, Fla., Boston, Mass., Dallas, TX and Livermore, Calif. are using TNCs as a part of their service delivery model to offer paratransit services, first and last mile solutions and general transit. This research focuses on the following questions:

  1. How do public transit agencies adhere to regulatory requirements when implementing TNCs into their service plan?
  2. Have agencies been challenged by any state or federal regulatory agencies on non-compliance by …

Challenging The Norm Of Minimums: A Case Study Of Ada Design Standards On The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln Campus, Emily Drummy May 2018

Challenging The Norm Of Minimums: A Case Study Of Ada Design Standards On The University Of Nebraska–Lincoln Campus, Emily Drummy

Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity

In the United States, over 30 million people have difficulties climbing stairs and require the use of a walker, cane, or wheelchair to move around (United States Census Bureau, 2012). All people interact with the built environment around them, including the some thirty million who deal with physical difficulties. While some can navigate the space around them easily, others have more difficulty due to certain barriers. Often, interior environments are designed with the able bodied in mind, not accommodating properly for the disabled even in the most basic of ways. Despite the introduction of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) …

An Analysis Of Democracy’S Effect On E-Government Development Globally., Frank Bencomo May 2018

An Analysis Of Democracy’S Effect On E-Government Development Globally., Frank Bencomo

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

This study looks to examine E-government’s relationship with Democracy on a global scale to assess the impact of how democratic a state is on how much it invests in E-government. I use the Economist’s democracy index and compare that to the United Nations E-government index in the years between 2008 to 2016 to find a pattern between the two factors. Once I identify the pattern, I use GDP per capita as a control variable to ensure that the relationship holds when how much capital a state has for each of its residents is taken into account. After that, I analyze …

Urbanicity In Kentucky : A Study On Academic Achievement In Urban Versus Rural Students., Kayla S. Manley May 2018

Urbanicity In Kentucky : A Study On Academic Achievement In Urban Versus Rural Students., Kayla S. Manley

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

When studying urbanicity, there is a large belief that rural students lag behind their urban counterparts in academics, both in preparation and success. This belief emerges as early as kindergarten and follows students up through secondary education. However, previous research has shown inconsistent results in how these students perform. The objective of this study was to determine if differences occurred in urban and rural students in their preparation for college, their perceptions of college, and academically once coming to college. Students from the Cardinal Covenant program at the University of Louisville (N = 54) were studied using information from …

Infrastructure As Fabric: Integrating Autonomous Vehicle Highways In Urban Environments, Samuel Dye May 2018

Infrastructure As Fabric: Integrating Autonomous Vehicle Highways In Urban Environments, Samuel Dye

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In an age of advancing transportation technology, the redevelopment of I-81 in Syracuse will be a local condition set as a blueprint for infrastructural solutions at large. This will be done through increased density and a pedestrian friendly environment to repair urban fabric and sprawl. The project accepts highways and viaducts not as barriers of the city but as a seam – an anchor that the city develops around. This research paper will first lay out the scenario to which new infrastructure can succeed in positively reshaping the urban environment. Secondly, this paper will dive deeper into the effects of …

One problem facing their work is that they do not have enough money to achieve their long-term goals. Further, …

“When Are We Going Home?”: Home Attachment In The Bosnian Community Of Central New York, Amela Hrustic May 2018

“When Are We Going Home?”: Home Attachment In The Bosnian Community Of Central New York, Amela Hrustic

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Following the Bosnian War, over 100,000 Bosnians were resettled in the United States and over 6,000 of these refugees were resettled in the Central New York cities of Syracuse and Utica. Since their resettlement, these Bosnians have managed to transform the cities into places they can now call “home”. This was partly done through the phenomenon of place attachment which is the affective link that individuals establish with places. Literature from the fields of anthropology, environmental psychology, and refugee studies was reviewed in order to build the background of this study and an ethnographic study was conducted from Fall 2017 …

Food Localization: Empowering Community Food Systems Through The Farm Bill, Brian Albert Fink, Alexandra Oakley Schluntz, Joshua Ulan Galperin May 2018

Food Localization: Empowering Community Food Systems Through The Farm Bill, Brian Albert Fink, Alexandra Oakley Schluntz, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Journal of Food Law & Policy

More diverse and value-driven public engagement has transformed the American food system. This engagement has changed the behavior of industries, consumers, policymakers, and communities. At the heart of this change is the drive among countless individuals and organizations to promote a wider variety of food choices and shape the food system in harmony with their values. Despite the local and sovereign nature of this engagement, federal food and agricultural policies have contributed substantially to this transformation of the American food system. In isolation, many of these policies support discrete programs and individuals. In the aggregate, these policies strengthen different facets …

The Labor Between Farm And Table: Cultivating An Urban Political Ecology Of Agrifood For The 21st Century, Amy K. Coplen May 2018

The Labor Between Farm And Table: Cultivating An Urban Political Ecology Of Agrifood For The 21st Century, Amy K. Coplen

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The variegated landscape of food production and consumption reveals a great deal about socionatural relations and processes of urbanization and globalization under capitalism. Food production has changed dramatically over time, shifting away (but never fully divorced) from the rural agrarian landscape to spaces that are characterized as industrial and/or urban. Workers transform nature at each stage in the food production process, not only on farms but also in processing plants, grocery stores, restaurants, and other spaces. This paper draws on urban political ecology (UPE) to position labor as central to understanding the socioecological relations embodied in food systems. It puts …

Reconstructing The Past For The Future: Denmark Vesey's Charleston As A Case Study In Building A Sustainable Digital Model, Matthew Amis May 2018

Reconstructing The Past For The Future: Denmark Vesey's Charleston As A Case Study In Building A Sustainable Digital Model, Matthew Amis

All Theses

Our capability to digitally recreate the past in the form of three dimensional modeling has exponentially grown in the past thirty years. This growth is both welcome and problematic to the heritage sector. How to utilize this technology in a sustainable manner has become a central discussion in topical literature, and identifying methods to produce historic resources that remain useful and accessible as technology evolves is becoming increasingly more important. This thesis explores existing digital heritage models to establish keys to crafting sustainable resources within the field. An in‐depth review of modeling software is presented with particular focus placed on …

Conveying Personal Narrative In Virtual Reality Using Procedural Techniques And Surrealism, Austin W. Brennan May 2018

Conveying Personal Narrative In Virtual Reality Using Procedural Techniques And Surrealism, Austin W. Brennan

All Theses

In this thesis a personal narrative is conveyed in a virtual reality experience where procedural techniques are used to create surreal environments. Virtual reality is a powerful way to build empathy and understanding of another individual’s experiences and choices. Procedural techniques enable an artist to create complex and highly stylized scenery. Surrealism can be used to depict emotions in a way that words alone are unable to describe. When combined, virtual reality, proceduralism, and surrealism can yield a compelling vehicle to express personal narrative.

Taking The Plunge: Enhancing The Visitor Experience In Waterfall-Based State Parks, Margaret M. Citarella May 2018

Taking The Plunge: Enhancing The Visitor Experience In Waterfall-Based State Parks, Margaret M. Citarella

All Theses

Waterfalls have long been popular tourist attractions due to their soundscape, beauty, natural pool, and recreational opportunities. With technological advances and abundant tourism information, more visitors are being drawn to waterfalls. Such high visitation and use amplifies the risk of degrading pristine waterfall sites and their resources. Not only are waterfalls experiencing high demand, but state parks are also seeing large increases in visitation. State parks are typically located closer to population centers and complement the more well-known and iconic national parks by providing recreational opportunities to more, diverse visitors. The present study aims to provide a basis for understanding …

From The Cradle To The Grave: How The Embryonic Environment Shapes Responses To Climate Throughout The Life Cycle, Michael A. Carlo May 2018

From The Cradle To The Grave: How The Embryonic Environment Shapes Responses To Climate Throughout The Life Cycle, Michael A. Carlo

All Theses

With rapidly warming climates, biologists are challenged to predict organismal responses to environmental variation, changes in biodiversity, and shifts in species distributions. In many cases, organismal responses differ across life stages that exhibit differences in physiological tolerances, habitat requirements, and resource allocations strategies. For instance, mobile life stages can alter behavior in response to changes in the thermal environment, whereas immobile life stages are often vulnerable to warming temperatures due to behavioral constraints and the limited microclimatic conditions experienced over small spatial extents (e.g., an embryo in an egg). Unfavorable developmental conditions can reduce growth, alter developmental rates, and increase …

Who Will Save The City: A Comparative Study Of Public Policies For Revitalization In Greenville, South Carolina And Macon, Georgia, Katharine Gallotta May 2018

Who Will Save The City: A Comparative Study Of Public Policies For Revitalization In Greenville, South Carolina And Macon, Georgia, Katharine Gallotta

All Theses

With the collapse of industry in combination with suburban sprawl, American cities nationwide experienced an economic recession in the early 1980s. To counter this recession, local governments pursued a range of revitalization policies. These public policies secured various levels of success in the cities working to bring their downtowns back to life. Creating a strategy for revitalization is a difficult process and has been approached differently all over the country. Public policies directly affect the residents and development in a city, inherently making them a representation of the city’s priorities. Macon, Georgia has pursued a revitalization strategy that centers around …

The Desubjectified Subject In The Poetry Of Rosmarie Waldrop, Amanda Rebecca Johnson May 2018

The Desubjectified Subject In The Poetry Of Rosmarie Waldrop, Amanda Rebecca Johnson

All Theses

Criticism of Rosmarie Waldrop’s Driven to Abstraction has centered around her fascination with the notion of zero as both a negation and the locus of infinity, but has so far neglected to discuss the implications that this lacuna has on the role of the subject. True to its title, Driven takes the reader on a journey toward nothingness where desubjectification is made into the subject of the work. Through the use of the prose poem which eschews traditional poetic form and conventional syntax, Waldrop employs a collage that not only provides material representation of abstract concepts, but also demonstrates the …

The Work Of Water In Edwidge Danticat's Environmental Imagination, Gabrielle Nugent May 2018

The Work Of Water In Edwidge Danticat's Environmental Imagination, Gabrielle Nugent

All Theses

This paper argues that focusing on seascapes in Danticat’s fiction unsettles former land-sea relations and, in turn, generates fluid conceptual alternatives to rigid colonial histories, hierarchies, and temporal scales. Investigating how the water in Danticat’s fiction upends cultural narratives of colonial progress and modernization’s processes also yields considerations of how Danticat’s novels entail a widening of the customary aperture of ecocritcism. Thinking about Danticat’s fiction environmentally raises the stakes for how we may think about the links between “the local” and contexts of planetary reach on an “ecoglobal” scale. Foregrounding these concerns when reading Danticat’s work bears directly on contemporary …

The Architecture Of Keeping Animals: Preservation Responses To Changing Animal Welfare Ideals In Mid-Sized American Zoos, Victoria Mccollum May 2018

The Architecture Of Keeping Animals: Preservation Responses To Changing Animal Welfare Ideals In Mid-Sized American Zoos, Victoria Mccollum

All Theses

Beginning in the mid-20th century, most of America’s Zoos began to re-evaluate the spaces which housed their living creatures. As advances in science and technology brought forward new information on animal welfare and care, zoos were soon faced with choices on the treatment of their current building stock. A range of preservation treatments emerged, from abandonment to demolition/new construction. This thesis examines the range of preservation treatments that took place in zoo buildings built prior to 1950 at the Lincoln Park Zoo (Chicago, IL), the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens (Cincinnati, OH), the Toledo Zoo and Aquarium (Toledo, OH) and …

Seasonality Of Tides In Southeast Asian Waters, Adam T. Devlin, Edward Zaron, David A. Jay, Stefan Talke May 2018

Seasonality Of Tides In Southeast Asian Waters, Adam T. Devlin, Edward Zaron, David A. Jay, Stefan Talke

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

An analysis of water level time series from 20 tide gauges in Southeast Asia finds that diurnal and semidiurnal astronomical tides exhibit strong seasonal variability of both amplitude and phase, which is not caused by known modulations of the astronomical tide-generating forces. Instead, it is found that the tidal properties are coherent with the western North Pacific monsoon index (WNPMI), indicating that monsoonal mechanisms are the likely cause. The study domain includes the Malacca Strait, Gulf of Thailand, the southern South China Sea, and Java Sea. The character of the geography and the tidal variability is different in each of …

The Flutists Of The John Philip Sousa’S Band: A Study Of The Flute Section And Soloists, Ramon Da Silva Moraes May 2018

The Flutists Of The John Philip Sousa’S Band: A Study Of The Flute Section And Soloists, Ramon Da Silva Moraes

Dissertations

The Sousa Band is widely known because of its leader and his compositions. Although it was one of the most successful ensembles in history, most of the instrumentalists and individuals who contributed to its success have had their legacies forgotten. The flute section of the Sousa Band is an example of a group of musicians who were recognized as some of the best in the United States during their time, but are neglected by the present flute community.

My research focused on gathering data about the flute section and the individuals who were instrumental for the creation and development of …

Reconstruction: A Concise History, Allen C. Guelzo May 2018

Reconstruction: A Concise History, Allen C. Guelzo

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Conflict shifted from the battlefield to the Capitol as Congress warred with President Andrew Johnson over just what to do with the South. Johnson's plan of Presidential Reconstruction, which was sympathetic to the former Confederacy and allowed repressive measures such as the "black codes," would ultimately lead to his impeachment and the institution of Radical Reconstruction. While Reconstruction saw the ratification of the 14th and 15th Amendments, expanding the rights and …

Cryptocurrencies As An Alternative To Fiat Monetary Systems, David A. Georgeson May 2018

Cryptocurrencies As An Alternative To Fiat Monetary Systems, David A. Georgeson

Applied Economics Theses

The recent popularity of cryptocurrencies is largely associated with a particular application referred to as Bitcoin. Cryptocurrency has a mix of properties that make it difficult to examine. These properties consist of being infinitely divisible, durable, transferable, fungible and can be controlled to be artificially scarce. Further, cryptocurrencies can act as a means of payment, a medium of exchange, a store of value, and a unit of account. This thesis will analyze the technical features underlying cryptocurrencies and find out whether or not they can function as an alternative to fiat money. Since Bitcoin is the most commonly understood application …
