How The Proximity Of Crime Impacts Housing Prices: A Hedonic Pricing Study Of Inner-Loop Houston, Tx., Samuel D. Thompson
How The Proximity Of Crime Impacts Housing Prices: A Hedonic Pricing Study Of Inner-Loop Houston, Tx., Samuel D. Thompson
Geography ETDs
This research used data on over 2200 house sales in inner-city Houston, TX to estimate the impact of crime on house prices. A GIS was used to tabulate home sale data from the MLS, neighborhood characteristics and crime data published by the Houston Police Department. Hedonic Pricing Models were built to assess how crime effects housing price and if proximity to the criminal event matters. Results show that crime does have a measurable impact on home sale price and that proximity of crime is important. An increase in number of violent criminal events leads to a discount in home price. …

This article is the third in a series of studies measuring the impact of cultural diversity on human development. We disaggregate cultural diversity into three components: ethnicity, language, and religion. The first study examined the impact of diversity internationally. We found that countries are worse off with greater diversity, especially religious diversity; however, we found that more-prosperous countries with strong institutions benefited from increased diversity. We concluded that strong institutions are essential to maximize the benefits of diversity while mitigating the associated costs. The second study examined the impact of diversity within the United States, where institutional strength was assumed …

What Do Preservice Teachers Think About Teaching Media Literacy?: An Exploratory Study Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Sarah Gretter, Aman Yadav
Journal of Media Literacy Education
Despite the numerous benefits of media & information literacy for students in today’s digital society, the lack of teacher preparation in teaching media & information literacy skills suggests that the societal rationale for students becoming media literate and the sustainable preparation of teachers in that area may differ. The purpose of this exploratory study was to explore the factors and beliefs underlying preservice teachers’ intention to teach media & information literacy in their future classroom according to the Theory of Planned Behavior. Findings suggest that preservice teachers’ have positive attitudes towards media & information literacy as an essential skill for …

Youth And The City: Reflective Photography As A Tool Of Urban Voice, Roman Gerodimos
Journal of Media Literacy Education
YYoung people’s engagement with urban public space has been facing a number of obstacles that reflect a lack of understanding of their needs, values and priorities. The emergence of digital devices and social media as integral elements of youth culture adds further urgency to the need to understand how young people themselves visually articulate their perceptions of life in the city. Bringing together elements from urban studies, youth studies and digital media literacy, this paper puts forward a pedagogic and research approach that aims to facilitate youth engagement with urban landscapes and the community. Participatory photography was used a tool …

Educational Experiences And Academic Adjustment Of Transfer Students At The Four-Year University, Jacklyn A. Collins
Open Access Dissertations
Education has been perceived as the key pathway that individuals utilize to achieve economic success and upward mobility, yet how that education is acquired is not a lock-step process. According to the 2015 Signature 9 Report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, students made 2.4 million (37.2%) transitions from one institution to another between 2008 and 2014 (Shapiro et al., 2015). However, according to Student Achievement Measurement (n.d.), only 11% of students who transfer from four-year to four-year institution complete a bachelor’s degree, which is much smaller than the 71.7% of full-time students who start at a four-year institution …

The United States And The Caribbean In The 21st Century: Towards A New Era Of Engagement?, Samantha S.S. Chaitram
Open Access Dissertations
Did the United States neglect or increase its engagement with the Caribbean during the twenty-first century? I argue that from the Bush to the Obama administrations (2001-2016), there was an effort by the United States to increase engagement with the Caribbean nations. My main research question was, why did the United States increase its engagement with the Caribbean during the twenty-first century? I focus on the Anglophone Caribbean and I examine the cases of The Bahamas, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana. By measuring engagement based on levels of U.S. foreign assistance, legislative changes, regional initiatives, and high-level diplomacy, I …

From Suassuna To Guerra-Peixe: The Armorial Movement In Brazil During The Military Dictatorship (1964-1985)—Constructing Notions Of Northeastern Identity Through Music And Literature, Rafael Torralvo Da Silva
Open Access Theses
Conceived by the playwright, novelist, and scholar, Ariano Suassuna (1927-2014), and officially established on October 18, 1970, the Movimento Armorial emerged as an artistic manifestation that proposed to create an erudite art form rooted in folk traditions to express the local color of the northeast region and the national identity of Brazil. Building on ideas introduced by the sociologist Gilberto Freyre and the members of the Escola de Recife (Recife School), Suassuna posited that the cultural and ethnic amalgamation between native Amerindians, African slaves, and Iberian colonizers was crystalized in regional Brazilian folklore. In his views, this folk art epitomized …

Mating Frequencies And Ecological Modeling Of Harvester Ant: Pogonomyrmex Comanche, Rachel Romo
Biology Theses
There is little known about the life history of the imperiled harvester ant Pogonomyrmex comanche. Due to the conservation status, there is a need to learn and understand how these ants are dispersing their genetics within the region. This study focused on resolving uncertainties about genetic diversity, mating frequencies, and habitat associations influencing distribution of this species. It’s well known and studied that queens of different species within this genus take part in multiple mating; but to determine if P. comanchefollows the other species, microsatellite markers were used to conduct paternal analysis on the colonies collected from Camp Swift …

The Rock Of Red Power: The 1969-1971 Occupation Of Alcatraz Island, Sarah Spalding
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
When over 90 Native Americans first made the voyage to Alcatraz Island on a November 1969 morning, there was little that could be predicted about what would unfold in the coming years. Alcatraz Island, the infamous prison that held criminals on the forefront of world news in the early twentieth century, would soon become an activist symbol. What followed November 20, 1969 was almost two years of continued Native American occupation of the island and a whirlwind of both media and federal attention. By the end of 1971, the remaining occupiers of Alcatraz were forcibly removed by federal marshals. However, …

Endophytic bacteria associated with medicinal plants possess unique strategies that enhance growth and suvival of host plants, many of which are mediated by distinctive secondary metabolites. These bacteria and their secondary metabolites are important subjects for both basic and applied research aimed at sustainable agriculture. In the present study, 114 endophytic strains isolated from the wild ethnomedicinal plant Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice) were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activities against common fungal pathogens of tomato (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp., Fulvia fulva, Alternaria solani), cotton (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. Vesinfectum, Verticillium dahliae), pomegranite (Ceratocystis fimbriata), Cymbidinium (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides), and Tsao-ko (Pestalotiopsis …

The Pond & The Sauna, Kaija Siirala
Theses and Dissertations
Combining interviews, observational footage, animation, archival images, video and film, The Pond & the Sauna examines the construction of home and family through an intergenerational collection of memories. Drawing on oral history traditions, the project traces the foundational threads that run through the lives of an extended family from past into the present. How do the values we learned as children manifest in our lives now? How do we negotiate our place within a wider social context? How are we moving through the cycles of life and what do home and family mean to us now?
Understanding The Gender Gap In Computer Science Undergraduate Academics, Mikaela Goldrich
Understanding The Gender Gap In Computer Science Undergraduate Academics, Mikaela Goldrich
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
There is a gender gap in technical fields that has persisted through generations. In my research, I focus on the gender gap within computer science (CS) undergraduate academics. Diversity in technical fields starts with diversity in academics. Studies have shown that girls who are exposed to CS in or before high school are more likely to study CS in college. [1] Other factors such as role models, life goals, and perception of CS also influence a girl’s decision. I surveyed UMW students in different stages of their CS degrees, in addition to students who only participated in an introductory CS …

Patterns Of The Past: Mountain Hemlock And Pacific Northwest Climate, Aaron Snow, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In July, 2016, I had the opportunity to attend the North American Dendroecological Fieldweek (NADEF) at Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. NADEF organizes the attendees into five different groups to undergo specific research projects all having to do with tree rings. My group, the intro group, hiked to the southern side of the park, assembled a chronology of mountain hemlock trees (Tsuga mertensiana), and observed notable attributes of the collected data. Because the fieldweek lasted only seven days, our research was minimal, which was why I applied for an ORCA grant in order to take the research to …

The Evolution Of The “We Can Do It” Poster And American Feminist Movements, Reina Aguierre
McNair Research Journal SJSU
World War II created mass destruction and economic distress but was also responsible for creating new opportunities for women. The war had torn families apart and had altered family dynamics. The high demands of the wartime economy called for a reevaluation of American women’s roles in society. In 1942, Pittsburgh artist J. Howard Miller was hired by the Westinghouse Company’s War Production Coordinating Committee to create a range of propaganda posters to encourage women to join the war effort.1 The most iconic was christened “Rosie the Riveter” and further popularized by Norman Rockwell. These images exemplified how the government …
Innovation, Culture And The Path To Postmodernism: Finland Vs. Denmark, Jayme Harlander
Innovation, Culture And The Path To Postmodernism: Finland Vs. Denmark, Jayme Harlander
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
The purpose of this study is to explore the concept of postmodernism as it applies to the innovative process as carried out in the 21st century. In doing so, this study compares and contrasts two countries within a region of the world with differing innovative capacities and then link these differences to their different engagements with the forces that characterize what scholars have terms “postmodernism”. From this study we find that countries that are more closely engaged with these postmodernist forces thrive as 21st century innovators; those that are less engaged –i.e., have trouble transitioning from the old “modernist” ethos—falter …

Development Of A High-Throughput Screening Assay For Potential Inhibitors Against Dna Polymerase Eta, Keri Bryson
Honors Program Theses and Projects
All living cells perform DNA replication through a group of enzymes called DNA polymerases. Unfortunately, DNA is constantly exposed to external and internal agents capable of causing damage. DNA damage causes blocks to replication that can be overcome through a special class of DNA polymerases, called the Y-family polymerases; which are able to traverse DNA lesions. Cisplatin is a common chemotherapeutic agent that damages DNA and has been used to treat cancer. However, many patients become resistant to cisplatin. The chemoresistance to cisplatin treatment is due in part to damage bypass performed by the specific Y-family polymerase, polymerase eta. The …

It is not common to travel to a region searching for what is wrong and askew. But this is precisely how I move through greater Palestine-Israel each time I visit. Explosions and incessant pummeling have forced the sidewalks and retaining walls to heave–Styrofoam slabs serve as an equally hasty and hideous shim. But in this, there is hope. Even where the sidewalk momentarily ends–likely that in just a few months a new road, deeper into the West Bank will be built–it is glaring that these foundations are laid at an unsustainable pace. In a land where the forest often obscures …

Predicting Spatial Patterns In Precipitation Isotope (Δ2h And Δ18o) Seasonality Using Sinusoidal Isoscapes, Scott T. Allen, James W. Kirchner, Gregory R. Goldsmith
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Understanding how precipitation isotopes vary spatially and temporally is important for tracer applications. We tested how well month‐to‐month variations in precipitation δ18O and δ2H were captured by sinusoidal cycles, and how well spatial variations in these seasonal cycles could be predicted, across Switzerland. Sine functions representing seasonal cycles in precipitation isotopes explained between 47% and 94% of the variance in monthly δ18O and δ2H values at each monitoring site. A significant sinusoidal cycle was also observed in line‐conditioned excess. We interpolated the amplitudes, phases, and offsets of these sine functions across the landscape, using multiple linear …

Enemy Life: Theorizing Exile Through Milton, Shelley And Byron, Robert L. Berger
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation investigates the contemporary discourse and conceptions of exile as it is presented by Milton, Shelley and Byron. Utilizing biopolitical theory as a lens, it posits that the Satanic iteration or narrative of exile embodies the reality of worldly exile. As such the dissertation explores the complex framing and subsequent deconstruction of Satanic and human subjectivities found in Paradise Lost, Prometheus Unbound, Manfred and Don Juan. The dissertation examines Paradise Lost for its competing narratives of exile, Adam and Satan, and explores notions of home, transgression, the purification rituals which are the origin of sovereign Power and the …

Through The Eyes Of Children: Social Oppression Under Nazi Rule From 1933 To 1938 Reflections Of Three Holocaust Survivors, Lauren Ashley Bradford
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
This paper discusses the experiences of three Berlin native child survivors of the Holocaust through analysis of their oral testimonies. Their unique voices help shed light on the various ways in which lives were forever changed for those who were legally identified as Jewish in Nazi Germany by way of social oppression. This paper highlights three key years that each survivor discussed at length in their testimonies: Hitler’s Chancellorship in 1933, the Nuremberg Laws in 1935, and Kristallnacht in 1938. Ultimately, this paper argues for the importance of these years and labels them as being a crucial part in the …
