Great Lakes Or Middle West: The 1936-37 Great Lakes Exposition And Regional Identity, Kenneth J. Bindas May 2018

Great Lakes Or Middle West: The 1936-37 Great Lakes Exposition And Regional Identity, Kenneth J. Bindas

Studies in Midwestern History

During the 1930s regional identities were especially pronounced as the ravages of the economic collapse encouraged the reevaluation of national, regional, and local identities, often linked with FDR’s appeal for unity and as a way to better understand and distribute the largesse of federal aid money that began filtering down to the people. There was considerable discussion about remaking the country along regional lines, creating what Edward Barrows called the “United Regions of America.” Given the complexity of modern society, “the reorganization” of the country was “inevitable” as a result of “natural, orderly social growth.” (See Edward M. Barrows, “United …

The Origins And Progress Of The Midwestern History Association, 2013-2016, Jon K. Lauck

Studies in Midwestern History

In the modern electronic din of emails and texts and tweets and instant messages it can be difficult to keep track of the long-term trajectory of day-to-day work and ongoing projects. With this difficulty in mind, and for the sake of giving some permanence to the memories of the past few years, I submit this chronicle about recent efforts to revive the field of Midwestern history via the creation of the Midwestern History Association. I hope this review and the commentary and recommendations included therein prove useful to the leaders in the field and the emerging scholars who are seeking …

The Funeral Of Beloved Hoosier Poet, James Whitcomb Riley, John E. Miller May 2018

The Funeral Of Beloved Hoosier Poet, James Whitcomb Riley, John E. Miller

Studies in Midwestern History

The funeral of popular Indiana poet James Whitcomb Riley in July 1916 was more than a statewide event (before him, only Abraham Lincoln and a general who had fought in the Spanish-American War had been accorded the honor of having their body lie in state in the rotunda of the state capitol). It was a national commemoration, generating thousands of newspaper articles, editorials, and expressions of grief and appreciation. Eulogized as a secular saint for his cheerfulness, high-mindedness, insight, and generosity, he was beloved for the poems that he had written extolling the simple virtues and the hardy characters of …

"If The Situation Seemed Insurmountable, I Always Wanted To Be There": Virginia Coffey, A Midwest Human Relations Pioneer, Phillip J. Obermiller, Thomas E. Wagner

Studies in Midwestern History

The devastating 1943 rioting in Detroit led to the formation of municipal human relations committees across the country, and among the oldest of these was the Cincinnati Mayor’s Friendly Relations Committee. Five years after its founding, executive director Marshall Bragdon ensured that the MFRC would continue to be a force for racial equality by hiring Virginia Coffey to be assistant director.

Virginia Coffey would go on to make important contributions to human relations internationally through her consulting work in England and nationally as a board member of the National Association of Intergroup Relations Officials. Coffey was appointed the executive director …

Omaha's Missouri Valley History Conference, 1958-2009: An Intellectual History, Oliver B. Pollak, Harl A. Dalstrom May 2018

Omaha's Missouri Valley History Conference, 1958-2009: An Intellectual History, Oliver B. Pollak, Harl A. Dalstrom

Studies in Midwestern History

The history conference, the profession’s agora, is an overlooked phenomenon in the sociology of knowledge and epistemology. Following the Royal Historical Society, New England antiquarian societies, and the American Historical Association, hundreds of state and county historical societies sprouted up across the nation throughout the nineteenth century. By the end of the twentieth century, annual history conferences were both regional (including the Southern, Northern Great Plains, and Western) and thematic (including conferences on religion, colonial America, and railroads). This phenomena includes the Missouri Valley History Conference (MVHC). This article examines the MVHC, which is still ongoing, from its launch in …

Reducing Inter-Unit Patient Report Delays And Transfer Times, Natalya Marinov May 2018

Reducing Inter-Unit Patient Report Delays And Transfer Times, Natalya Marinov

Master's Projects and Capstones

Inter-unit coordination is essential in preventing a bottleneck in patient flow and its resultant stresses to staff, hindering quality patient care, and wasting time. The Medical-Surgical Unit (MSU) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) struggle to establish efficient patient report times and transfers. Preliminary data demonstrated report delays attributed to an arduous workload and overburdened MSU nursing staff. The project’s objective focuses on reducing nurse-related report time delays by 10%, increasing understanding and teamwork, promoting proactive thinking to manage workflow efficiently, improving patient flow, and improving the inter-unit relationship between MSU and PACU. Increasing awareness and reducing transfer times are …

International And Domestic Drivers Of Military Shifts In Alaska, Peter K. Burkhart May 2018

International And Domestic Drivers Of Military Shifts In Alaska, Peter K. Burkhart

Arctic and Northern Studies

Since WWII, Alaska has witnessed dramatic influxes and reductions in military personnel and funding. This thesis explores the drivers of these events. It applies two theories to analyze the trends: realist theory from international relations and the advocacy coalition framework from public policy. The thesis uses a case study framework and process-tracing to analyze three different time periods in Alaska's history: 1) World War II (1940-1945), 2) the early Cold War era (1950-1958), and 3) the immediate post-Cold War era (1993-1999). This thesis argues that the level of international threat accounts for the United States' decisions to increase or decrease …

Up In Smoke: Exploring The Relationship Between Forest Firefighting And Subsistence Harvest, Alyssa V. Rodrigues May 2018

Up In Smoke: Exploring The Relationship Between Forest Firefighting And Subsistence Harvest, Alyssa V. Rodrigues

Economics

Wildland firefighting in Alaska is changing due to the impact of climate change on the boreal forest. Changes to the wildland firefighting regime could have significant impacts on community participation during fall subsistence hunting and, consequentially, food security levels. Many rural Alaska communities have mixed cash-subsistence economies in which people have to balance their time between earning an income and harvesting subsistence foods. Cash income is necessary to pay for things such as housing, electricity, gasoline, gun, ammunition, and other capital necessary to engage in subsistence. This dissertation aims to better understand the current relationship between Type 2, or hand …

Painting, Geography, And The Body: Charting The First Two Decades Of Mary Corse’S Art, Sarah A. Meller May 2018

Painting, Geography, And The Body: Charting The First Two Decades Of Mary Corse’S Art, Sarah A. Meller

Theses and Dissertations

Mary Corse has always maintained her position on the periphery, and her work has generally been excluded from art historical scholarship. This study illuminates the ways in which the first two decades of Corse’s practice were in fact in dynamic dialogue with broader impulses and concurrent trends operating at the time.

From Camps To Communities: Neets'Ąįį Gwich'in Planning And Development In A Pre- And Post-Settlement Context, Charlene Barbara Stern May 2018

From Camps To Communities: Neets'Ąįį Gwich'in Planning And Development In A Pre- And Post-Settlement Context, Charlene Barbara Stern

Indigenous Studies

This study focuses on the Neets'aii Gwich'in, whose traditional territory is located in the northeastern interior of Alaska, and their experiences with planning and development. Prior to settling into permanent villages, the Neets'ąįį lived in widely scattered camps moving in relation to seasonal subsistence resources. Equipped with extensive knowledge of their country, Neets'ąįį people knew at any given time where the best places for certain animals and resources were and thus would camp closer to those areas. According to Neets'ąįį oral history, life in the "those days" was preoccupied with basic survival. Planning ahead, being prepared, and adapting to changing …

Teaching Through Culture In The K-12 Classroom, Janice Devore Littlebear May 2018

Teaching Through Culture In The K-12 Classroom, Janice Devore Littlebear

Indigenous Studies

This study explores how quality experienced teachers use culture to successfully deliver K-12 classroom instruction. Additionally, it develops and tests the effectiveness of a resource designed to instruct early career teachers on the use of culture to deliver classroom instruction. Research was conducted in two phases over a four-year time frame (2014-2017). The study followed a mixed methods exploratory sequential design, using a participatory action research approach. Phase 1 gathered qualitative data from 20 experienced teachers located in two states, which were analyzed using constructed grounded theory. The results of this analysis, accompanied by a literature review, resulted in the …

Erasing History? Contextualizing Modern Monument Destruction Through An Archaeological Lens, Stephanie Holton May 2018

Erasing History? Contextualizing Modern Monument Destruction Through An Archaeological Lens, Stephanie Holton

University Honors Theses

Cultures throughout the world have expended great amounts of energy in the practice of monument construction. Often, the resulting monuments become a part of the archaeological record through processes of either environmental or cultural deposition, and sometimes even by means of intentional destruction. The destruction of such an energetically costly object begs explanation, and is particularly relevant given the movement currently taking place across the United States to destroy or relocate standing Confederate monuments. My project sought to place the current monument destruction in a larger historical context through the analysis of three archaeological case studies. I attempted to separate …

The Relationship Between Urban Tree Lai And Urban Heat, Amanda Sheepherd, Dr. Ryan Jensen May 2018

The Relationship Between Urban Tree Lai And Urban Heat, Amanda Sheepherd, Dr. Ryan Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

It is well known that urban areas are warmer than the surrounding rural areas, with various negative (though sometimes not immediately perceived) consequences for urban residents and the environment. As the world’s human population becomes increasingly urban, methods of mitigating urban heat become more imperative to explore. Though not nearly as abundant as in many natural environments, trees are fairly common in urban areas and can be utilized to offset urban heat. Studying the cooling effects of trees on the surrounding areas can further our understanding of the relationship between trees and temperature. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a specific …

A Comparison Of Salinity Effects From Hurricanes Dolly (2008) And Alex (2010) In A Texas Lagoon System, Joseph L. Kowalski, Hudson R. Deyoe, Gilbert H. Boza Jr., Donald L. Hockaday, Paul V. Zimba

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

A comparison of salinity effects from hurricanes Dolly (2008) and Alex (2010) in a Texas lagoon system.Hurricanes are not uncommon along the Gulf of Mexico coast, but there are few studies of the effects they have on coastal embayments. Hurricanes Dolly (2008) and Alex (2010) were both Category 2 storms affecting the Lower Laguna Madre (LLM) of Texas. Surveys were performed to assess poststorm water quality after landfall of both storms at up to 18 sample stations. The main difference between storm effects was salinity reduction because of stormwater input from the watershed. Effects from Hurricane Dolly were of short …

The Territorial Politics Of The New York Botanical Garden, 1891-1912, Carolyn Mcsherry May 2018

The Territorial Politics Of The New York Botanical Garden, 1891-1912, Carolyn Mcsherry

American Studies ETDs

In 1891 fifty-four of New York’s wealthiest speculators came together to incorporate a new botanical garden for their city. This dissertation examines the political work of the New York Botanical Garden during its founding decades to extend the expansionist capacity of botanical science, while addressing political problems endemic in New York. The Garden served as a vehicle for transcribing landscape meaning steeped in European traditions of colonialism, into a new American context defined by plebiscitary rhetoric, territorial dispossession and instability of tenure in land, social rifts and oppressions. It tells the story of how a landed elite in New York …

Estimating Seabird Abundance: A Case Study In Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska, Jennifer Curl May 2018

Estimating Seabird Abundance: A Case Study In Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska, Jennifer Curl

Biological Sciences

Estimation of breeding seabird population size and trends are integral components of studies or programs seeking to understand how seabird populations respond to changes in marine or coastal environments, to identify threatened or declining species, and to inform management actions and decisions. In Chapter 1, I conduct a review of the challenges, considerations, tools, and methods involved in efforts to estimate and monitor breeding seabird abundance. I discuss challenges in terms of two broad categories: 1) seabird life history, behavior, and breeding environments, and 2) challenges inherent to survey methods and logistics. I introduce methods and tools used to access …

The Maritime Strategy In U.S. Soviet Strategic Relations, Colin S. Gray May 2018

The Maritime Strategy In U.S. Soviet Strategic Relations, Colin S. Gray

Naval War College Review

It is reasonable to assume that Mikhail Gorbachev neither wishes, nor would be permitted, to dismantle the Soviet empire or to reduce radically the "immoderate greatness" of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union functioning in, or in fact as, a one-party state. For reasons very deeply rooted in geography and history-reasons that are worthy of being called cultural rather than matters of policy-the Great Russian Empire that is the U.S.S.R. is a thinly camouflaged war machine more than it is an entity having a war machine. Four assumptions about Soviet-American relations provide the political framework for this discussion of …

Framing Protesters: Description Bias In The Coverage Of The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge And Charlotte Protests, Mary A. Schiele May 2018

Framing Protesters: Description Bias In The Coverage Of The Malheur National Wildlife Refuge And Charlotte Protests, Mary A. Schiele

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

This article examines the coverage of two protest events, occurring in Harney County, Oregon and Charlotte, North Carolina, for description bias. The two demonstrations occurred in 2016 and had a similar underlying goal to draw the nation’s attention to the pertinent issues they wanted the country to address. Research has shown that media framing does not typically align with protester goals and can detract from the centralized message, especially if conflict is present. This study uses articles published by the New York Times and Wall Street Journal to search for description bias in the coverage of the protest events, which …

The Opportunity Costs Of Large-Deck Carriers: Naval Strategy For The 1990sand Beyond, Mark A. Randol, Wallace J. Thies May 2018

The Opportunity Costs Of Large-Deck Carriers: Naval Strategy For The 1990sand Beyond, Mark A. Randol, Wallace J. Thies

Naval War College Review

As a nation of travelers and traders, naval power has long played a central role in the defense of American interests abroad. The oceans bordering North America have been both a barrier and a highway, separating the United States from potential enemies, connecting it to allies, and providing a venue for commerce and trade . Geography dictated the prominent role of naval forces in American foreign policy during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and with the emergence of the United States as a military and economic superpower, Americans have come to depend even more heavily on naval forces as foreign …

Where The Midwest Ends And The Great Plains Begin, Brad Tennant May 2018

Where The Midwest Ends And The Great Plains Begin, Brad Tennant

Studies in Midwestern History

There are a number of historical perspectives and events that justify the Great Plains as the end of the Midwest and the beginning of the American West. The most noticeable differences begin at approximately the 100th meridian as changes with climatic conditions, vegetation, and animal life become more readily apparent. In addition, historical events, such as the last major United States-Indian confrontation at Wounded Knee and the non-Indian settlement of the Northern Great Plains in the late nineteenth century, coincided with the proclaimed end of the frontier experience in United States history.

Security In Conflict And Peace: Gendered Approaches To Human Security By Women’S Ngos, Madison C. Guyton

Student Scholarship

The first chapter gives a brief overview of human security and gender informed security as well as their critiques and the rationale behind combining the two frameworks. It also describes why women’s empowerment NGOs have the greatest capacity to actualize gender informed human security approached. To determine the success of women’s empowerment organizations implementing gender informed human security approaches in different political contexts, the second chapter reviews the operational history of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq, an Iraqi women’s empowerment organization. And, the third chapter analyses the operational history of TATU, a Tanzanian women’s empowerment organization. The conclusion …

Beyond Religious Freedom: The New Global Politics Of Religion, By Elizabeth Shakman Hurd, Rachel Devon May 2018

Beyond Religious Freedom: The New Global Politics Of Religion, By Elizabeth Shakman Hurd, Rachel Devon

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The international media is saturated with stories of religious violence and persecution—particularly in the Middle East. The United States has been engaged in an ongoing battle to combat this violence around the globe, often in the name of ‘religious freedom.’ The concept of religious freedom is typically portrayed as an unalloyed good—an aspiration and ideal that the international community should strive towards. Following the passing of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, the United States established an Office of International Religious Freedom. Canada established a similar version with its own Office of Religious Freedom in 2013. In her provocative …

"It Was Information Based": Student Reasoning When Distinguishing Between Scholarly And Popular Sources, Amy Jankowski, Alyssa Russo, Lori Townsend May 2018

"It Was Information Based": Student Reasoning When Distinguishing Between Scholarly And Popular Sources, Amy Jankowski, Alyssa Russo, Lori Townsend

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Scholarly and popular sources are a longstanding construct in library instruction. A quick Google search brings up an abundance of LibGuides and tutorials on the subject. However, we have found that teaching students to identify and classify information sources using a rigid binary categorization is problematic. In an effort to better understand the ways students conceptualize and evaluate sources, we stepped back to ask: what kind of reasoning do students apply when distinguishing between scholarly and popular sources?

The Imperial Russian Revision Lists Of The 18th And 19th Century, Joseph B. Everett

Faculty Publications

One of the most important resources for social and family historians researching in the former Russian Empire are the revision lists, a series of ten enumerations of the population conducted between 1719 and 1858. Listing the members of each household among taxable classes of people across the Russian Empire, the revisions lists are useful for studying historical population demographics and reconstructing family relationships. An awareness of these records and where to access them can be useful for Slavic librarians to facilitate the research of Russian historians and genealogists. This article provides an overview of the history and content of the …
