Global Reform Of Investor-State Arbitration: A Tentative Roadmap Of China's Emergent Equilibrium, Mark Mclaughlin Jun 2018

Global Reform Of Investor-State Arbitration: A Tentative Roadmap Of China's Emergent Equilibrium, Mark Mclaughlin

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Investor–State arbitration is in a state of flux. In recent years, doubts about its adequacy have become apparent: questions of coherence, consistency, legitimacy, and utility have rendered fragile the central place of investor–State arbitration in global foreign direct investment (FDI) governance. Three threads of reform have been advanced as a corrective to these deficiencies, encompassing incremental reform, institutional reform, and fundamental reform. China is perhaps the most influential nation not to have declared a preference for one future or another. For over a decade, the Chinese approach to investor–State arbitration has been in a state of disequilibrium: bilateral investment treaties …

Climate Change And Technology: Examining Opinion Formation Of Geoengineering, Christopher L. Cummings, Sonny Rosenthal Jun 2018

Climate Change And Technology: Examining Opinion Formation Of Geoengineering, Christopher L. Cummings, Sonny Rosenthal

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The term “climate change” has evolved from what was originally a technical term employed by scientists into a symbolic referent involving complex social, political, and moral considerations that have spurred worldwide debate. As evidence of the anthropogenic influence on the Earth’s climate has grown over the past few decades, climate change has come to be viewed as a primary challenge to be confronted in the twenty-first century. Geoengineering, or climate engineering, is a set of large-scale technological interventions proposed to offset climatic changes. This study seeks to understand which factors contribute to, or alternatively, detract from public acceptance of geoengineering …

Negotiation Of Space In Garden City: Urban Securitization, Gender, Everydayness And Affective Encounters., Diana Magdy Jun 2018

Negotiation Of Space In Garden City: Urban Securitization, Gender, Everydayness And Affective Encounters., Diana Magdy

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is based on ethnographic research that explores the everyday lives of the group of people and the interplay of affect, gender and governmentality in Garden City as a securitized space. The research looks at the erection of walls, the ubiquity of barricades and checkpoints across Cairo post-2011 with focus on Garden City, which demonstrates the technologies of separation, domination, and control producing different spatial arrangement. Moreover, these techniques of control become an expression of power and the securitization of urban life as well as imposing a feeling of incarceration in the city. Nevertheless, the research goes beyond this …

Cultural Capital In Place-Making, C Mansfield Jun 2018

Cultural Capital In Place-Making, C Mansfield

Plymouth Business School

Innovative fieldwork research in cultural tourism is presented which is based around a detective novel set in a seaside town in France. The participants completed autoethnographic writing to provide insight into the active processes of value creation, experience creation, place-making and identity formation. The original research proposes a theory for the way that the literary language in the cultural artefact, in this case the realist novel, activates the tourist's cultural capital and thus affects behaviours. A new theoretical term is proposed, the toureme. The theory has applicability in other towns where novels are set and hence is useful for place-making. …

An Economic Analysis Of Disintermediation On Crowdfunding Platforms, Jianqing Chen, Ling Ge, Zhiling Guo Jun 2018

An Economic Analysis Of Disintermediation On Crowdfunding Platforms, Jianqing Chen, Ling Ge, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Prosocial crowdfunding platforms can work through direct peer-to-peer (P2P) lending or through intermediaries, incurring different costs to borrowers and lenders. This study investigates the incentives of lenders and borrowers’ and how they would choose between the two types of platforms. We model the intermediary as a profit maximizer who filters projects, provides high quality borrowers with access to the platform, and ensures repayment rate to lenders. Our initial findings suggest that the introduction of direct P2P lending platform enables the intermediary to reduce its interest rate and to raise its screening threshold on the intermediated platform. The P2P lending platform …

Changes To Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) Signatures And Enantiomer Fractions Across Different Tissue Types In Guillemots, D Megson, Ta Brown, G O'Sullivan, M Robson, Et Al Jun 2018

Changes To Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) Signatures And Enantiomer Fractions Across Different Tissue Types In Guillemots, D Megson, Ta Brown, G O'Sullivan, M Robson, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Two Guillemot carcases were dissected, each providing 12 discrete tissue samples and 3 samples of partially digested food. One hundred and five PCBs from the 209 PCBs determined by GCxGC-ToFMS were detected. The relative proportions of individual PCBs did not vary greatly within tissue types, although the PCB profile from undigested food could be distinguished. Enantiomer fractions (EFs) were determined for CB-95, CB-136 and CB-149 by GC-HRqToFMS. EFs in the partially digested food were near racemic, with high levels of enrichment for E1 CB-95 in the kidneys and liver (EF of 0.80 and 0.84 respectively). This provides some of the …

Dayak Lundayeh: A Report From The Border, Luqman Hakim Zainuri

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Dayak Lundayeh: A Report from the Border" Luqman H. Zainuri explores the vulnerabilities and potential of national disintegration coming from indigenous communities in Indonesia. In particular, the paper focuses on one of the communities which has been largely ignored, the Dayak people, who have played an important role in the border between Indonesia and Malaysia in Borneo Island. The Dayak indigenous people which inhabit this highland plateau are known as the Lun Bawang, on the Malaysian side, and the Lun Dayeh (or Lundayeh) in the Indonesian side. Both groups are linguistically and culturally the same. This paper …

The Effects Of Neoliberalism On Poverty In Egypt, Adham Sameh Elmeligy Jun 2018

The Effects Of Neoliberalism On Poverty In Egypt, Adham Sameh Elmeligy

Theses and Dissertations

The issue of poverty is one of the major obstacles for economic and social development. Also, it is considered one of the key problems that negatively impact global economy. Egypt is one of the countries that suffered from poverty since 1960s. Poverty had widened the gap between the rich and poor. In 1990s, Egypt implemented neoliberal policies- namely structural readjustment and economic liberalization programs- for the sake of enhancing the economy and alleviating poverty. This thesis primarily examines the role of structural readjustment and economic liberalization programs in developing GDP and its negative impact on poverty reduction in Egypt. Furthermore, …

The Viability Of A Fully Fledged Inflation Targeting Regime In Egypt, Sarah Samy Farid Jun 2018

The Viability Of A Fully Fledged Inflation Targeting Regime In Egypt, Sarah Samy Farid

Theses and Dissertations

Inflation targeting (IT), in simplistic terms, is a monetary policy regime that is based upon the commitment of a country’s monetary authority to meeting predetermined, quantitative targets for the annual rate of inflation. IT has attained popularity and widespread acclamation amongst policymakers in the international context over the past three decades. Since Egypt initiated a new economic and structural reform program supported by the Extended Fund Facility from the IMF in November 2016, the search for a new nominal anchor for the Egyptian economy has been underway. In this regard, the new objective seems to be a temporary switch to …

Crossing Of English- Speaking Expatriates Into Galician On Facebook And How Their Stance Taking Indexes Their Identity, Patricia Mrozek Jun 2018

Crossing Of English- Speaking Expatriates Into Galician On Facebook And How Their Stance Taking Indexes Their Identity, Patricia Mrozek

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the use of linguistic resources to take both affective and epistemic stances by English speaking expatriates currently or previously residing in the autonomous community of Galicia. In turn, I consider what those stances index about the identity of the speakers. The historical background outlines how the Galician code came to become stigmatized. As a stigmatized code, one linguistic resource of particular interest to this study is crossing as defined by Rampton (1999, 2009). Crossing and other linguistic resources used such as metalinguistic talk, become to carry indexes through repeated stance-taking moves. Dubois' (2007) stance triangle is the …

The Effect Of Foreign Aid On Foreign Direct Investment Iinflows: Evidence From Africa, Joseph Michael Jun 2018

The Effect Of Foreign Aid On Foreign Direct Investment Iinflows: Evidence From Africa, Joseph Michael

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the impact of foreign aid on foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa. Since there is no consensus in the literature regarding the effects of foreign aid on FDI in developing countries, the thesis examines the empirical relationship between foreign aid and FDI in Africa covering 41 African countries between 1995 and 2015. The analysis controls for market size, level of development, economic trade openness, political stability, and natural resources dependency. The model is estimated using a dynamic panel of System Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation to address endogeneity problem. The model is applied to panel data …

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Liposomal Delivery Of Nedaplatin In Enhancing Cytotoxicity, Genotoxicity And Dna Damage In Lung, Breast, And Osteosarcoma Cancer Cell Lines, Salma Abdelnaser Jun 2018

Evaluating The Efficacy Of Liposomal Delivery Of Nedaplatin In Enhancing Cytotoxicity, Genotoxicity And Dna Damage In Lung, Breast, And Osteosarcoma Cancer Cell Lines, Salma Abdelnaser

Theses and Dissertations

Today, cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide where chemotherapy is one of the common strategies to control it. Platinum-based chemotherapeutic drugs (PBDs) are a mainstay in chemotherapy due to their high effectiveness in a wide spectrum of cancer types. Severe toxicity and innate or acquired drug resistance are the two main problems limiting PBD clinical use. One approach to overcome both problems is by employing cancer-targeting drug delivery systems where liposomes, in particular, are gaining much attention in oncology application and have established superior potency compared to the corresponding free drugs in clinical application already. This study …

The Political Economy Of Migrant Smuggling: The Case Of Conflict In Mali, Thomas Hinkel Jun 2018

The Political Economy Of Migrant Smuggling: The Case Of Conflict In Mali, Thomas Hinkel

Theses and Dissertations

The extensive human smuggling networks that have emerged around North Africa and the Sahel have inaugurated a significant shift in the economic landscape of a region that has traditionally been characterized by the gray economy and precarious political arrangements. Ample and detailed research has been produced that highlights how militia groups and non-state actors have been tapping into these flows (via taxation of routes and racketeering against non-armed smuggling enterprises) in order to fund their various projects. The way in which this new economic landscape is affecting local political arrangements is a heretofore little considered, yet highly consequential, development of …

Global-Scale Comparisons Of Human Land Use: Developing Shared Terminology For Land-Use Practices Of Significance For Global Change., Kd Morrison, E Hammer, L Popova, Et Al Jun 2018

Global-Scale Comparisons Of Human Land Use: Developing Shared Terminology For Land-Use Practices Of Significance For Global Change., Kd Morrison, E Hammer, L Popova, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Although archaeological data are needed to understand the impacts of past human land use on the Earth system, synthesis is hampered by a lack of consistent categories. We develop hierarchical and scalable land-use classifications for use across the globe. Human land-use practices have been highly variable over the course of the Holocene, a diversity evident in the differentiated effects of human activity on land cover. Historically, agriculture was one of the most significant forms of land use, but even mobile hunter-gatherers transformed land cover through landscape-scale burning (Bliege Bird 2008). Livestock-keeping, plowing, irrigation, and the production of metal, ceramics, and …

Surrender: An Alchemical Act In Personal Transformation, Moze, Mary Beth G. May 2018

Surrender: An Alchemical Act In Personal Transformation, Moze, Mary Beth G.

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This article is the result of inquiring about human resistance to change. Specifically, it focuses on the act of surrender which engages, rather than avoids, the process of transformation. Due to the relatively sparse amount of literature on the subject of surrender, additional literature which parallels and compliments the subject is creatively woven in. The author comfortably injects criticism and interpretation of the literature and intermittently offers suggestions for further research efforts.

Making And Breaking Trust In Forest Collaborative Groups, Emily Jane Davis, Lee K. Cerveny, Donald R. Ulrich, Meagan L. Nuss May 2018

Making And Breaking Trust In Forest Collaborative Groups, Emily Jane Davis, Lee K. Cerveny, Donald R. Ulrich, Meagan L. Nuss

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

There has been a recent increase in use of an organized, forest ‘collaborative’ group approach for multi-stakeholder input on federal forestlands in the U.S. West. This approach relies on the creation of shared trust to achieve social agreement. Yet growing critiques suggest a lack of trust in the U.S. Forest Service [Forest Service], between stakeholders, and the collaborative process itself. We conducted three comparative case studies of established forest collaborative groups in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho to ask how trust is created and damaged or broken in this context. We found multiple, interlinked dimensions to trust, including significant reliance on …

Who’S In Charge? The Role Of Power In Collaborative Governance And Forest Management., Patricia B. Orth, Antony S. Cheng May 2018

Who’S In Charge? The Role Of Power In Collaborative Governance And Forest Management., Patricia B. Orth, Antony S. Cheng

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Collaborative processes for working toward common management goals between individuals and organizations, despite their differences, emerged as one enduring legacy resulting from the Timber Wars in the American West during the late-1980s and the early 1990s. Power imbalances are often cited as a common problem in collaborative processes and can have a lasting, deleterious impact on the collaborative process and its outcomes. For all its importance, however, there is a yet unfulfilled need to understand the extent to which power and power imbalances affect collaborative relationships. Our research uses a case study approach to qualitatively analyze power dynamics within three …

From Conflict To Collaboration: Exploring Influences On Community Well-Being, Leana M. Weissberg, Jonathan P. Kusel, Kyle A. Rodgers May 2018

From Conflict To Collaboration: Exploring Influences On Community Well-Being, Leana M. Weissberg, Jonathan P. Kusel, Kyle A. Rodgers

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

Decades after the Timber Wars, land management agencies continue to redefine approaches to forest restoration and management, with impacts for Western forest dependent communities. To better understand this evolving dynamic, we examined the recent history of a rural forest community in the northern Sierra Nevada against the backdrop of changing perspectives on and relationships to resource use, industry, and forest management. Guided by community priorities distilled from interview data, we examine the transition from the Timber Wars to collaborative forest management through the rise of area collaboratives. The success of this work and its potential to genuinely improve community well-being …

The Role Of The Local Community On Federal Lands: The Weaverville Community Forest, Erin C. Kelly May 2018

The Role Of The Local Community On Federal Lands: The Weaverville Community Forest, Erin C. Kelly

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In the wake of the timber wars, communities across the American West have struggled to redefine their relationships to nearby federal forests. The timber-dependent model of the pre-Timber War era, with clear timber targets and economic outputs, has been replaced by more nuanced and less clearly-defined model: ecosystem management. This case study research uses interviews with participants in the Weaverville Community Forest (WCF) to explore the role of a community in managing its nearby federal lands. Momentum for the WCF flowed from a small group of citizens who were invested in the forest despite their cultural and ideological differences regarding …

Rethinking The Fiscal Relationship Between Public Lands And Public Land Counties: County Payments 4.0, Mark Haggerty May 2018

Rethinking The Fiscal Relationship Between Public Lands And Public Land Counties: County Payments 4.0, Mark Haggerty

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In 1908, Congress authorized payments to local governments, including counties and school districts, to compensate for the non-taxable status of the newly established forest reserves within their boundaries. The original program shared revenue generated from commercial activities on public lands, e.g. timber harvesting, not anticipating the major changes in the volume and types of activities on National Forest lands, particularly in the Pacific Northwest, that have played out over the past century. Two subsequent reforms – the appropriated Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) in 1976 and ‘transition’ payments made between 1990 and 2018, including payments associated with the Northwest …

Social-Ecological Change, Resilience, And Adaptive Capacity In The Mckenzie River Valley, Oregon, Timothy B. Inman, Hannah Gosnell, Denise H. Lach, Kailey Kornhauser

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

This study explores perceptions of long-term residents regarding links between governance, landscape, and community change in the McKenzie River Valley (MRV) in western Oregon and provides a general assessment of factors affecting resilience and adaptive capacity. Residents interviewed indicated that dramatic changes driven by market competition, timber industry changes, increased regulation, and rural restructuring have occurred in both the landscape and community. The changes that have transpired have redefined the relationship between the community and the landscape, moving away from local dependence on timber harvests to an economy focused on tourism and other ecosystem services. In doing so the community …

Beyond 'Owls Versus Jobs': A Twenty-Year Retrospective Of The Headwaters Forest Controversy, Jennifer Bernstein May 2018

Beyond 'Owls Versus Jobs': A Twenty-Year Retrospective Of The Headwaters Forest Controversy, Jennifer Bernstein

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

In 1999, the Headwaters Forest Reserve was established in Humboldt County after more than 20 years of community activism, negotiations, and litigation. The ‘last stand’ of unprotected, privately-owned old growth redwood had finally been safeguarded, though many on the North Coast felt that the final deal fell far short of what was needed to protect the watershed’s ecological functioning. This article uses academic and journalistic research, supplemented by oral histories, to make three main points about the North Coast ‘post deal.’ One, forest management practices in the region have evolved to be more consistent with the practices of ecological forestry. …
