Understanding The Broader Horizon Of Sexual Encounter: A Case Study On Sexual Engagement Among Filipino Teens, Dalmacito A. Cordero Jun 2018

Understanding The Broader Horizon Of Sexual Encounter: A Case Study On Sexual Engagement Among Filipino Teens, Dalmacito A. Cordero

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The sexual morality of Filipino teenagers is in great decline based on the many cases of unwanted pregnancy, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), liberality in sexual behaviors, and many other evident consequences. This is a very important concern for many families, school administrators, church authorities, and other involved institutions. With this unfortunate situation, it is easier to judge how our teens have immersed themselves in the river of sexual immorality. But the question is, do we really understand what led them to commit such an unacceptable act in this traditional Christian- dominated culture like ours? Have we scrutinized …

Dirty Snow: The Impact Of Urban Particulates On A Mid-Latitude Seasonal Snowpack, David James Kelley Jun 2018

Dirty Snow: The Impact Of Urban Particulates On A Mid-Latitude Seasonal Snowpack, David James Kelley

Theses - ALL

This thesis examines the spatial distribution of particulate matter in snow around a mid-size, midlatitude city. Particulates are small, light absorbing impurities that are produced from the incomplete combustion of carbon-based fuel. When deposited on the snowpack, these particles reduce snow albedo and accelerate melt. Two experiments were designed to explore the distribution and effect of urban particulate emissions on snow surrounding Syracuse, NY (43.049897, -76.149102, pop: 149,000). The “directional study” examined the relationship between distribution and cross-city prevailing wind, while, the “transect study” examined the variability of particulate concentration with distance from a busy interstate highway. Fifteen sites were …

A Political Companion To Frederick Douglass, Neil Roberts Jun 2018

A Political Companion To Frederick Douglass, Neil Roberts

Civil Rights

Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) was a prolific writer and public speaker whose impact on American literature and history has been long studied by historians and literary critics. Yet as political theorists have focused on the legacies of such notables as W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington, Douglass's profound influence on Afro-modern and American political thought has often been undervalued. In an effort to fill this gap in the scholarship on Douglass, editor Neil Roberts and an exciting group of established and rising scholars examine the author's autobiographies, essays, speeches, and novella. Together, they illuminate his genius for analyzing …

The Third World Women’S Alliance: History, Geopolitics, And Form, Ariane Vani Kannan

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation focuses on the work of the Third World Women’s Alliance (TWWA), a women-of-color-led activist organization that maintained active chapters in New York City and the Bay Area between 1971-80. Drawing on archival research and qualitative interviews, I reconstruct how the group invoked, constructed, and circulated intersecting Third World histories and geopolitical analyses through political education, publications, and cultural events. In addition to this historical study, I seek to understand the ongoing presence of the TWWA in educational spaces through interviews with archivists and professors across disciplines. This project makes three contributions to the field of Rhetoric and Composition: …

Elemental Analyses Of Archaeological Bone Using Pxrf, Icp-Ms, And A Newly Developed Calibration To Assess Andean Paleodiets, Christine L. Bergmann Jun 2018

Elemental Analyses Of Archaeological Bone Using Pxrf, Icp-Ms, And A Newly Developed Calibration To Assess Andean Paleodiets, Christine L. Bergmann

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As a result of the quick rise of pXRF technology in archaeology, there are concerns regarding the reliability and validity of data output acquired from pXRF. In this study, I test the hypothesis that portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry can provide reliable and valid results, using newly developed calibration curves, for the analysis of archaeological animal and human skeletal materials in prehistoric Peru to address hypotheses about ancient diet and trade. While pXRF systems may come with calibration software, the few if any standards and reference materials provided with the instrument rarely correspond to the vast array of archaeological materials …

Race And Gender In (Re)Integration Of Victim-Survivors Of Csec In A Community Advocacy Context, Joshlyn Lawhorn Jun 2018

Race And Gender In (Re)Integration Of Victim-Survivors Of Csec In A Community Advocacy Context, Joshlyn Lawhorn

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I use feminist ethnography at a nonprofit organization to analyze the racialized gender in (re)integration of victim-survivors of commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). Critical race feminism and intersectionality are the theoretical frameworks to guide the analysis of community advocacy. The analysis considers two themes with various subsections that capture CSEC at the site. The first theme analyzes the definition, challenges, coordination and rhetoric of reintegration at the site. The second theme highlights the site’s racial identity, Black victimhood of victim-survivors of CSEC in the context of community, and racialized gender within reintegration. I discuss the strategic …

Using Passive Acoustics To Infer Spawning Behavior And Phenology: A Case Study Of Haddock On Georges Bank, Elizabeth Mcdonald Jun 2018

Using Passive Acoustics To Infer Spawning Behavior And Phenology: A Case Study Of Haddock On Georges Bank, Elizabeth Mcdonald

Theses - ALL

Climate change has the potential to impact many aspects of an organism’s biology, including phenology, the timing of important biological events. The timing of reproduction and spawning events for commercially important fish species is a critically important area of research for fisheries management. Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) are commercially important as well as sound-producing, which allows for monitoring via non-invasive passive acoustics. This study presents an application of passive acoustic monitoring to a multi-year dataset to increase understanding of haddock sound production, as well as trends in spawning phenology and behavior. An automatic acoustic detector was able to identify haddock calls …

Simultaneous Regional Detection Of Land-Use Changes And Elevated Ghg Levels: The Case Of Spring Precipitation In Tropical South America, Armineh Barkhordarian, Hans Von Storch, Ali Behrangi, Paul C. Loikith, Carlos R. Mechoso, Judah Detzer Jun 2018

Simultaneous Regional Detection Of Land-Use Changes And Elevated Ghg Levels: The Case Of Spring Precipitation In Tropical South America, Armineh Barkhordarian, Hans Von Storch, Ali Behrangi, Paul C. Loikith, Carlos R. Mechoso, Judah Detzer

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

A decline in dry season precipitation over tropical South America has a large impact on ecosystem health of the region. Results here indicate that the magnitude of negative trends in dry season precipitation in the past decades exceeds the estimated range of trends due to natural variability of the climate system defined in both the preindustrial climate and during the 850–1850 millennium. The observed drying is associated with an increase in vapor pressure deficit. The univariate detection analysis shows that greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing has a systematic influence in negative 30-year trends of precipitation ending in 1998 and later on. …

Losing Home: Housing, Displacement, And The American Dream, Jessie Speer Jun 2018

Losing Home: Housing, Displacement, And The American Dream, Jessie Speer

Dissertations - ALL

Over the past decade, new oral history archives and self-publishing platforms have led to an explosion in the production of memoirs and oral histories of homelessness. This dissertation frames the growing genre of homeless life narratives as a form of urban theory that has been largely displaced from public memory. Based on close readings of hundreds of memoirs and oral histories of homelessness from cities across the United States, this research highlights the violent geographies of the American dream, in which both political economies of urban housing and heteropatriarchal cultures of domesticity produce racialized and gendered cycles of displacement. Further, …

Our Homes, Our Stores: Aging In Place For Lgbtq Communities In The San Francisco Bay Area, Simon Dean Jarrar Jun 2018

Our Homes, Our Stores: Aging In Place For Lgbtq Communities In The San Francisco Bay Area, Simon Dean Jarrar

Master's Theses

The objective of this research was to investigate the impact of gentrification on the social networks and communities of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) elderly people living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The expectation was that, due to the rising cost of living, people in elderly LGBTQ communities would be relocating; this would result in the fragmentation of support networks and community spaces. I used a two-part interviewing process. In the first interview, I asked participants to tell me about themselves and their lives, as well as what they consider to be important aspects of their lives in …

Nonpoint Source Bacterial Pollution In The Coyote Creek Watershed, Elisabeth Wilkinson Jun 2018

The goal of this study was to assess the extent of bacterial pollution along Coyote Creek in Northern California and to provide insight on microwatershed characteristics and their potential correlation to bacteria loads. Samples were collected and analyzed for fecal indicator bacteria concentrations at 21 geographic locations from within the creek and its stormwater outfalls. E. coli levels within Coyote Creek and stormwater entering the creek exceeded recreational water quality standards. Stormwater outfall …

De Mestizas A Indígenas: Reindigenization As A Political Strategy In Ecuador, Pamela X. Pareja Jun 2018

De Mestizas A Indígenas: Reindigenization As A Political Strategy In Ecuador, Pamela X. Pareja

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 1990s were a period of intense socio-economic upheaval in Ecuador, in part due to the numerous protests that would come to be known as the Levantamiento Indígena. Notoriously disenfranchised since the bloody conquest of the Americas, peoples of various Indigenous nationalities that reside within Ecuador fought for the constitutional recognition of the nation as both plurinational and multicultural, in order to secure intercultural public policies that would affect patterns of agrarian distribution, indigenous education, health, and overall representation. The prominence of the Indigenous movement and the revalorization of the Indigenous identity throughout Ecuador became an attractive vehicle for which …

Troubled Water: Building A Bridge To Clean Energy Through Small Hydropower Regulatory Reform, Samuel J. Panarella, Jody Lowenstein Jun 2018

Troubled Water: Building A Bridge To Clean Energy Through Small Hydropower Regulatory Reform, Samuel J. Panarella, Jody Lowenstein

UCLA Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

It is beyond credible dispute that the planet is heating up at an alarming rate and that the ecological effects of global warming pose real questions about the continued viability of human and non-human life on earth in the not-too-distant future. A primary cause of global warming is the burning of carbon-based fuels, mainly coal, natural gas, and oil, to generate electricity and for other purposes. Clearly, more must be done, and done soon, to stave off the worst impacts of global warming.

Drastically reducing global carbon emissions features prominently in any serious proposal to combat global warming. However, given …

Effects Of The United States Reconstruction On Nationalism In The Japanese Education System, Connell Murphy Jun 2018

Effects Of The United States Reconstruction On Nationalism In The Japanese Education System, Connell Murphy

Voces Novae

When the United States began its reconstruction of Japan after World War II, they consistently put their own interests within the country before what would benefit Japan the most . While the first two years of the occupation led to significant changes inside and outside schools, including the Ministry of Education’s diminished role, increased local involvement in the academic system, and the removal of nationalistic “morality” classes such as shushin. All of these changes were necessary efforts to denationalize and decentralize Japan’s educational system and allow more choices for teachers and schools. When Washington began to take an increased interest …

French Land, Algerian People: Nineteenth-Century French Discourse On Algeria And Its Consequences, Paige Gulley Jun 2018

French Land, Algerian People: Nineteenth-Century French Discourse On Algeria And Its Consequences, Paige Gulley

Voces Novae

Language is fundamental in shaping our understanding of the world we live, and as such, studies of discourse are invaluable in providing insight into the worldviews of historical actors. Though much has been written on the depiction of colonized peoples and its Oriental undertones, little has been said about the discourse on a colony itself. In examining the French discourse on Algeria in the nineteenth century, it becomes clear that the French privileged Algeria as a rich and valuable resource for France even as they decried the “backwardness” of the people of Algeria. While ignoring its inhabitants completely or discussing …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Anthropogenic era marks the role of humans as agents of planetary modification. In this era, the search for sustainability in human-environment interactions has pushed the development of modeling techniques able to incorporate dynamic natural and human feedbacks across temporal and spatial scales. While researchers have refined models for both natural and human systems separately, the coupling of these systems via model integration continues to be a challenge. In response, researchers have concentrated their attention on how human decision-making processes respond to and affect the environment. New pathways to sustainability may be developed by examining how human culture informs the …

Analyzing The Relationship Between Climate, Vegetation Characteristics, And Water Use For The Oklahoma City Metro Area, Jennifer Koch, Tracy Boyer, Heather Mccarthy, Peter Kedron, Monika Ghimire, Qingtao Zhou Jun 2018

Analyzing The Relationship Between Climate, Vegetation Characteristics, And Water Use For The Oklahoma City Metro Area, Jennifer Koch, Tracy Boyer, Heather Mccarthy, Peter Kedron, Monika Ghimire, Qingtao Zhou

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Oklahoma’s highly variable weather and large precipitation gradient work together with population growth and urbanization to create a landscape that is extremely vulnerable to climatic extremes. As shown by the drought in 2011-2013, Oklahoma’s municipal water supply has come under stress from additional demand. To develop sustainable natural resource supplies that support a vibrant economy with healthy citizens, we need to develop robust understanding of these complex socio-environmental systems, which can be used to empower decision makers to effectively adapt to climate variability/change. For this purpose, we develop a spatio-temporal simulation model for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area, which helps …

What's An "Actor"? What's A "System"? Breaking Knowledge Down To Build It Up Again In Collaborative Socio-Ecological Modeling Of The Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Basin., Stephanie Paladino, Jennifer Koch, Sophie Plassin, Jack R. Friedman Jun 2018

Friedman

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental modelling of complex human-environment dynamics faces many challenges, including key conceptual and methodological questions of what to model, at what scale, and what constitutes relevant data or knowledge. Given this complexity, socio-ecological modelling increasingly calls for collaborations that bring together different knowledge sets, both multi-disciplinary and of the actors in the environment to be modeled. A key challenge, however, is that collaborators bring to the exercise different epistemological, methodological, and experiential frameworks. In addition, modelling platforms themselves impose particular structures on ways of knowing particular problems. To help advance socio-ecological modelling, we describe a collaborative process among social scientists …

The Nutrition Transition Among The Andean Kichwas Of Ecuador, Vanessa Alicia Chee Jun 2018

The Nutrition Transition Among The Andean Kichwas Of Ecuador, Vanessa Alicia Chee

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The nutrition transition is a global phenomenon in which diets have become increasingly westernized and processed while lifestyles have shifted from labor intensive to sedentary, largely on account of the advent of technology, globalization n and urbanization. Despite the prevalence of this phenomenon, very little is known regarding how the nutrition transition has affected the risk of comorbid chronic diseases among indigenous Kichwas communities in Ecuador. Aims of this study are : 1) Identify specific health outcomes (such as diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol) associated with the lifestyle risk factors of the nutrition transition among the Andean Kichwas indigenous population; …

Diversity Of Ssdna Phages Related To The Family Microviridae Within The Ciona Robusta Gut, Alexandria Creasy Jun 2018

Diversity Of Ssdna Phages Related To The Family Microviridae Within The Ciona Robusta Gut, Alexandria Creasy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that strongly influences animal health. The bacterial component, for example, contributes orders of magnitude more gene products to host physiology than the host genome; thus, changes to the composition of these bacterial communities can have profound influences on the health of the animal. By infecting and lysing their hosts, viruses (particularly viruses infecting bacteria or phages) can affect critical functions in these environments, yet the consequences of these infections remain to be fully described. Most studies investigating gut viromes to date have focused on double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) phages …

An Evaluation Of The Utility Of A Mass-Weighted Frequency Distribution Of Sediment For Modeling Aeolian Transport Rates, Raihan Jamil Jun 2018

An Evaluation Of The Utility Of A Mass-Weighted Frequency Distribution Of Sediment For Modeling Aeolian Transport Rates, Raihan Jamil

LSU Master's Theses

Predictions made by aeolian transport models often do not match well with measured data. The poor predictive capability of these models remains a fundamental problem in aeolian geomorphology. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the recently proposed mass-weighted frequency distribution (Edwards and Namikas 2015) and the apparent von Kármán parameter proposed by Li et al. (2010) to improve transport rate predictions. The evaluation consists of comparisons of predicted transport rates versus a large dataset of measured field and lab transport rates collected from the literature. The transport rate predictions are made both with and without recalibration of model empirical coefficients. …

The two areas possess similar humid subtropical climate and dense population, but experienced different anthropogenic impacts. TB sat at a …

Hybridizers And The Hybridized: Orchid Growing As Hybrid "Nature?", Kellie Petersen Jun 2018

Hybridizers And The Hybridized: Orchid Growing As Hybrid "Nature?", Kellie Petersen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Orchid growing is a hobby that includes not only acquiring and caring for orchids, but also learning about the diverse care requirements of various orchids, attending meetings of orchid groups, having one’s orchids evaluated by American Orchid Society judges or being a judge, or even creating hybrids. In this way, orchid hobbyists compose a distinctive subculture (Hansen 2000). Yet the activity of orchid growing also forms a nexus between the non-human and the human, two categories that are often constructed as an opposing binary. This thesis focuses on how orchid growing represents both the embedded, institutionalized characteristic of the binary …

Indigenous Tribes In The Brazilian Amazon: Finding A Balance Between Sustainability And Economic Development, Bernadette R. O'Donnell

Honors College Theses

The number of isolated indigenous tribes in Brazil is dropping due to a multitude of factors, including resource extraction. If these factors continue, there will be further reduction of the population of indigenous tribes which causes the loss of culture of the world’s oldest societies. This research establishes the roles that the Brazilian government, NGOs, and the international community should play to preserve indigenous tribes. The research question is: How can Brazil sustain isolated indigenous tribes in the Amazon without compromising its own economic development? The research method is the modified Delphi method which results in a consensus of experts …
