Facilitating Undergraduate Learning Through Community-Engaged Problem-Based Learning, Ronica N. Rooks, Brooke Dorsey Holliman Jul 2018

Facilitating Undergraduate Learning Through Community-Engaged Problem-Based Learning, Ronica N. Rooks, Brooke Dorsey Holliman

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

We used problem-based or experiential learning in our undergraduate Health Policy course to examine food deserts via a health impact assessment (HIA) assignment. A HIA evaluates potential effects on population health before a policy/program is implemented, to improve health and reduce adverse outcomes. We investigated if the HIA assignment facilitated student learning using mixed-methods to descriptively analyze students’ pre-/post-test and peer group assessment surveys, guest lecture reflections, mid-semester evaluations, and HIA research paper reflections. Quantitatively, students’ pre-/post-test ratings of their learning decreased from positive to neutral Likert scale scores, but they rated their group work positively over time. Qualitatively, students …

Rpostgis: Linking R With A Postgis Spatial Database, David Bucklin, Mathieu Basille

The R Journal

With the proliferation of sensors and the ease of data collection from online sources, large datasets have become the norm in many scientific disciplines, and efficient data storage, management, and retrival is imperative for large research projects. Relational databases provide a solution, but in order to be useful, must be able to be linked to analysis and visualization tools, such as R. Here, we present a package intended to facilitate integration of R with the open-source database software PostgreSQL, with a focus on its spatial extension, PostGIS. The package rpostgis (version 1.4.1) provides methods for spatial data handling (vector and …

The Development And Evaluation Of A First-Year Undergraduate Physical Chemistry Experiment, Carolina Uncles

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The laboratory in chemistry has been a place for student learning for many years. The study here developed a practical experiment to form part of the curriculum of Plymouth University’s BSc (Hons) Chemistry course for first year students. The experiment focused on physical chemistry and explored rates of reaction using a modified crystal violet and sodium hydroxide reaction. The modifications from an original method included the concentrations of sodium hydroxide and the instrument used. The practical was finalised and lab script produced in eight weeks. Further studies were also conducted surrounding the effect of temperature on the reaction. The resultant …

A Video Guide To Navigating The Challenges Of A High Tech Business In Montana, Julia Quigley

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

High tech is Montana’s new frontier for entrepreneurs. Advances in technology is reducing geography as a barrier, and we are experiencing a new kind of economic growth. However, building a high tech business in Montana’s mostly rural environment presents an array of obstacles for entrepreneurs and business owners. This project addresses these challenges and offers advice from some of the state’s activists, like business advisors, state representatives, and venture capital firms. A miniseries distributed via YouTube highlights key information from several in-person interviews, and outlines why Montana is primed for a high tech boom.

Seeking Glimpses: Reflections On Doing Archival Work, Alex Hanson, Stephanie Jones, Thomas Passwater, Noah Wilson

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article explores the role of archival research in understanding and generating social histories from the perspectives of four different doctoral students as they reflect on their archival research experiences. We argue that archival research is complex, subjective, contextual, and at times, incomplete. Our various perspectives address ideas of privilege, representation, what it means to remember (or forget), how archives are constituted and reconstituted, and where we can make meaning in archival spaces. This article demonstrates that although archival research has had a presence in Composition and Rhetoric for some time, that presence is continually shifting, and even when embarking …

Immigration, Income, And Public Transit Perceptions: Findings From An Intercept Survey, Jesus M. Barajas, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Daniel G. Chatman Jul 2018

Immigration, Income, And Public Transit Perceptions: Findings From An Intercept Survey, Jesus M. Barajas, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Daniel G. Chatman

Journal of Public Transportation

Although a significant fraction of public transit riders in the United States are immigrants, relatively little research explores whether immigrants have unique transit experiences. This paper analyzes intercept survey data from 1,247 transit riders in the San Francisco Bay Area to explore how mode choices and travel experiences differ for low-income immigrants compared to higher-income immigrants and US-born residents. We find that some public transit experiences are similar across all immigrant status and income groups, while in other ways low-income immigrants differ from their higher-income counterparts or from US-born respondents. In particular, low-income immigrants were less likely to have a …

Understanding Transit System Performance Using Avl-Apc Data: An Analytics Platform With Case Studies For The Pittsburgh Region, Xidong Pi, Mark Egge, Jackson Whitmore, Amy Silbermann, Zhen Sean Qian

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper introduces a novel transit data analytics platform for public transit planning, assessing service quality and revealing service problems in high spatiotemporal resolution for public transit systems based on Automatic Passenger Counting (APC) and Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) technologies. The platform offers a systematic way for users and decision makers to understand system performance from many aspects of service quality, including passenger waiting time, stop-skipping frequency, bus bunching level, bus travel time, on-time performance, and bus fullness. The AVL-APC data from September 2012 to March 2016 were archived in a database to support the development of a user-friendly web …

The Politics Of Public Budgeting In Illinois, John Jackson, John Foster Jul 2018

The Politics Of Public Budgeting In Illinois, John Jackson, John Foster

The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)

This paper is about taxing, revenue and public budgeting in Illinois. The concept of public budgeting includes both the revenues raised by government and the ways in which those revenues are spent on the functions and programs sponsored by governments. This paper focuses especially on spending, that is on how and where revenue is distributed in the state in the form of public services and programs. It provides relevant data on the statewide distribution patterns and especially the question of whether those expenditures of the taxpayers’ money disproportionately benefit one region over the other. This question has provoked a long …

Floristic Survey Of Crawford And Cherokee Counties In Southeast Kansas: An Evaluation Of Change Over Five Decades, Samantha Pryer Jul 2018

Floristic Survey Of Crawford And Cherokee Counties In Southeast Kansas: An Evaluation Of Change Over Five Decades, Samantha Pryer

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This project had two main objectives. The first objective was to document comprehensively the vascular flora of Crawford and Cherokee counties in extreme southeast Kansas. Each county had seen limited collecting in recent decades, though a comprehensive survey had never been done for Cherokee County. PSU student E.S. Gibson summarized the flora for Crawford County in 1963. Fieldwork for the present study occurred mostly in 2014 and 2015. Based on 6500+ newly collected specimens, vouchers from Gibson’s study, and taxa documented by Biota of North America (BONAP) (Kartesz 2017), 1440 taxa are reported, which includes 33 state and 263 county …

Establishing Cultural Identity In American Concert Dance: How Corporate Funding Can Revitalize The World Of Dance, Taylor Rosenberger Jul 2018

Establishing Cultural Identity In American Concert Dance: How Corporate Funding Can Revitalize The World Of Dance, Taylor Rosenberger

Honors College Theses

In a country that has rapidly evolved in many industries, it has always mystified me as to why advancement in the arts, specifically dance, has lagged behind. My hypothesis as to why this is occurring is that concert dance in America is not as synonymous to the cultural identity of the nation as it is in comparison to its European ancestors. I began my research with the creation of ballet in order to determine the cultural roots that were established within particular societies. I then compared the funding models between the nations with this deep attachment to the funding models …

Federal Student Aid: Can We Solve A Problem We Do Not Understand?, Deanne Loonin, Julie Margetta Morgan Jul 2018

Federal Student Aid: Can We Solve A Problem We Do Not Understand?, Deanne Loonin, Julie Margetta Morgan

Utah Law Review

At over $1 trillion, with more than 8 million borrowers in default, the federal student loan program is in trouble. There is no question that policymakers will do their best to fix it in the coming years. The only question is whether they will have the evidence they need to make informed judgments about what ails our student loan program, and what can cure it.

In the coming years, advocates, policymakers, and researchers should focus on gathering data and information on all possible causes of the failures in the student loan program. As the previous Part describes, the public has …

The Greater University Circle Economic Inclusion (GUCI) Initiative has surpassed a decade of existence by connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and leaders throughout seven neighborhoods that encompass Greater University Circle (GUC) in Cleveland, Ohio. This initiative was first assembled by the Cleveland Foundation in 2005 to bring together the three major anchor institutions located in these neighborhoods (Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals Health System) to convene and meet shared goals by harnessing their collective economic power. It is important to recognize that in many other anchor initiatives in other parts of the country, initiatives are brought by …

Is High-Finance An Extractive Sector?, Saskia Sassen Jul 2018

Is High-Finance An Extractive Sector?, Saskia Sassen

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The article examines some of the key features of high finance (henceforth, simply finance) from the angle of the mix of capabilities that constitute the sector. It has a radically different organizing logic from that of, for instance, the typical mass consumer-oriented corporation. The article posits that finance has de-bordered the narrowly defined notion of finance as simply "financial firms and markets." It emphasizes its capacity to financialize a growing range of material and non-material elements. This has also meant that the sector by now encompasses a very broad range of financial and nonfinancial institutions, different types of jurisdictions, a …

Internal Borders And Migration In India, Zovanga L. Kone, Maggie Y. Liu, Aaditya Mattoo, Caglar Ozden, Siddharth Sharma Jul 2018

Internal Borders And Migration In India, Zovanga L. Kone, Maggie Y. Liu, Aaditya Mattoo, Caglar Ozden, Siddharth Sharma

Economics: Faculty Publications

Internal mobility is a critical component of economic growth and development, as it enables the reallocation of labor to more productive opportunities across sectors and regions. Using detailed district-to-district migration data from the 2001 Census of India, the article highlights the role of state borders as significant impediments to internal mobility. The analysis finds that average migration between neighboring districts in the same state is at least 50% larger than neighboring districts on different sides of a state border, even after accounting for linguistic differences. Although the impact of state borders differs by education, age and reason for migration, it …

My Land Is My Flesh Silver Bluff, The Creek Indians, And The Transformation Of Colonized Space In Early America, Bryan C. Rindfleisch Jul 2018

My Land Is My Flesh Silver Bluff, The Creek Indians, And The Transformation Of Colonized Space In Early America, Bryan C. Rindfleisch

History Faculty Research and Publications

This essay explores how Native peoples like the Creek (Muscogee) Indians invested colonized spaces in early American society with their own material, commercial, political, and spiritual meanings and importance. In particular, Creek Indians from the town of Coweta transformed Silver Bluff, the plantation of the trader and merchant George Galphin, into a “white ground,” as a place connected to Creek Country by a “white path,” and as a space where Creek and British leaders congregated to conduct business and negotiate politics. For it is no coincidence that the treaties of Augusta in 1763 and 1773, peaceful resolutions agreed to by …
