Escalation At Sea: Stability And Instability In Maritime East Asia, Ian Bowers
Naval War College Review
Low-level instability is to be expected with maritime boundary disputes or when power competition occurs at sea; however, sustained escalatory cycles are unlikely because of the characteristics of the maritime strategic environment.
Environments Past: Nostalgia In Environmental Policy And Governance, Jordan P. Howell, Jennifer L. Kitson, David Clowney
Environments Past: Nostalgia In Environmental Policy And Governance, Jordan P. Howell, Jennifer L. Kitson, David Clowney
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
A variety of factors shape environmental policy & governance (EPG) processes, from perceptions of physical ecology and profit motives to social justice and landscape aesthetics concerns. Many scholars have examined the role of values in EPG, and demonstrated that attempts to incorporate (especially) nonmarket values into EPG are loaded with both practical and conceptual challenges. Nevertheless, it is clear that nonmarket values of all types play a crucial role in shaping EPG outcomes. In this paper, we explore the role of nostalgia as a factor in EPG. We examine literatures on environmental values, governance, and affect in light of their …

"Something That Not Everybody Has": Parents' Reasons For Enrolling In Spanish Immersion Program, Danya Schimmack
"Something That Not Everybody Has": Parents' Reasons For Enrolling In Spanish Immersion Program, Danya Schimmack
Linguistics
Immersion programs are a form of bilingual education where content classes are taught in a second language. Immersion programs are generally optional choices which means that parents must make the conscious decision to enroll their children in the specific program. Thus, my research question: why do parents decide to enroll their children in the Spanish Immersion Program of Chugiak, Alaska? This research question and site were selected based on my own experience as a learner in the program and my personal curiosity towards my own parents' enrollment decisions. This study involved semi-structured interviews with twelve parents, including my own parents, …
Development Of Novel Therapies For The Treatment Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Shrey Kanvinde
Development Of Novel Therapies For The Treatment Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Shrey Kanvinde
Theses & Dissertations
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and remittent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Despite extensive research efforts, there is no cure nor a well-defined pathogenesis for IBD. Loss of epithelial barrier function, increased colonic immune cell infiltration and upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines are the hallmarks of IBD. Despite treatments like painkillers, aminosalicylates, steroids, and biologics, almost 70% patients require surgery at least once in their life time. The main limitation with most of the current treatments is they are either absorbed systemically or administered systemically resulting in adverse side effects. As a result, there is a huge unmet …
A Multi-Level Assessment Of Healthcare Facilities Readiness, Willingness, And Ability To Adopt And Sustain Telehealth Services, Jamie Larson
A Multi-Level Assessment Of Healthcare Facilities Readiness, Willingness, And Ability To Adopt And Sustain Telehealth Services, Jamie Larson
Theses & Dissertations
Telehealth technologies are becoming more pervasive throughout the healthcare system as a way to provide services to patients that would otherwise have difficulty with access. Currently, little is known about the current state of telehealth use within clinics and hospital in the US. Most studies evaluating telehealth programs are feasibility or small patient outcome studies from one location. Utilizing a hybrid framework combining the levels of complex socio-technical systems with the theory of ready, willing and able. The theory of ready, willing, and able is founded on the basis that these three preconditions need to be met for a change …

Black Gold In A White Wilderness-Antarctic Oil: The Past, Present, And Potential Of A Region In Need Of Sovereign Environmental Stewardship, Joseph J. Ward
Florida State University Journal of Land Use and Environmental Law
In this Comment, the author provides an overview of the geography of Antarctica and describes the key treaty agreements governing the region. This is followed by a review of the prospects of oil exploitation in Antarctica and the surrounding seas, and an explanation of the necessary conditions for feasible oil exploitation. In another segment of this Comment, the author predicts the effect a significant Antarctic oil discovery would have on the Antarctic Treaty System and points out problems with the current Antarctic minerals regime, suggesting that the sovereignty issue must be resolved if future conflict is to be avoided in …
Mapping With Midwives: Sources About Jewish Midwives In Eighteenth-Century Amsterdam, Jordan Katz
Mapping With Midwives: Sources About Jewish Midwives In Eighteenth-Century Amsterdam, Jordan Katz
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
In the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, western European cities began to enact robust regulations concerning the training and licensure of midwives. The city of Amsterdam refined its bureaucratic procedures for midwife licensure earlier than other European locales, and all prospective midwives – including Jews – were required to register in the Collegium Obstetricum from 1668 onward. Midwives had to attend anatomy lectures, report their apprenticeships, and pass a comprehensive examination. Although individual Jewish midwives often went through standard municipal procedures to gain admittance to the profession, Jewish communities had their own internal methods of regulating midwives and ensuring …
The Influence Of Regional Stereotypes In Employee Selection, Brittani E. Plaisance
The Influence Of Regional Stereotypes In Employee Selection, Brittani E. Plaisance
Doctoral Dissertations
An individual’s social world is understood through categorizing other people as those within an individual’s own in-group and those without, or the out-group. Social cognitive theory suggests that individuals make decisions in social settings based on implicit social comparisons between these groups. Stereotypes are oversimplified beliefs about the members of a specific group and discrimination is the behavioral outcome based on held stereotypes. Discrimination based on race, ethnicity, age, and gender has dominated research in the realm of employee selection for the last twenty years. Researchers have demonstrated perceived and actual differences in various attributes by region of the United …
Punitive Preemption And The First Amendment, Rachel Proctor May
Punitive Preemption And The First Amendment, Rachel Proctor May
San Diego Law Review
In recent years, state legislators have begun passing a new breed of “punitive” preemption laws–those that impose fines, civil and criminal sanctions, and other sanctions on local governments and their officials as a consequence of passing laws or enacting policies that are inconsistent with state laws. This represents a significant change from traditional preemption, under which a local government could enact laws based on its view of preempting state statutes and applicable state constitutional provisions and, if necessary, defend its interpretation in court. When punitive preemption prevents a local lawmaking process from taking place, the state forecloses a unique form …

Intellectual Property, Income Inequality, And Societal Interconnectivity In The United States: Social Calculus And The Historical Distribution Of Wealth, Brenda Reddix-Smalls
North Carolina Central University Science & Intellectual Property Law Review
Scant attention has been paid to the historical trajectory and effect of the United States’ intellectual property regimes—patenting, copyrighting, and trademarking—as devices which implement racialized property grants and further income and social inequality. This article focuses on just that and argues that the United States Constitution was designed as a property-based and economically-driven social compact which identifies intellectual property interests through a racialized lens. From this view, it is further argued that the Intellectual Property Clause, which itself was designed to incentivize invention and innovation, protected the racialized property interests of the governing elites of the newly established government and …
The Embrace - Design For Elderly, Meng Liu
The Embrace - Design For Elderly, Meng Liu
Theses
The elderly requires special care, especially those who live in China and living alone. This age group faces physical, mental and emotional challenges, one of which is loneliness. This paper explores the help people age 65-75 in China need to reduce their loneliness due to their children living away from them. The proposed solution is to encourage them to meet new people and keep them busy; then reducing their isolation. One such solution, a bench, is designed to curb the loneliness of elders by providing a platform to connect with each other and promoting their health through physical exercise, comfort, …
Geography And Strategy: Their Interrelationship, Saul B. Cohen
Geography And Strategy: Their Interrelationship, Saul B. Cohen
Naval War College Review
In actuality, geography does not determine strategy. Indeed, geography, per se, does not even influence or condition strategy. What is the case is that man's knowledge of geography and the ideas that he derives from this knowledge influence and condition strategy.

Migration Data And Brain Train Trends And Impacts Panel Discussion, Jennifer Zarek, David J. Drozd, Jill Heese
CPAR Presents: A Data and Research Series for Community Impact
Nebraska has historically suffered from a net outmigration of residents. In more recent decades, while the state has been able to achieve net inmigration overall, it still has net losses domestically with other states, specifically among non-Hispanic Whites and those with higher education. This has led to a shortage of skilled workers in key fields, an issue cited repeatedly as a top concern for area businesses and policy makers. See the numbers and trends, learn the strengths and weaknesses of various data sources and ways to analyze this issue, and the impacts that outmigration has. Our panel of experts includes …

Developing And Implementing A Community-Level Para-Swimming Program, Mariett Teixeira Matias, Milena M. Parent
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The purpose of this study was to examine the basic conditions required to implement a para-swimming program at the community level. This was undertaken using a qualitative benchmarking approach based on documents/literature and semi-structured interviews with representatives from 13 countries as well as from the International Paralympic Committee’s Agitos Foundation. Results indicate that successful community-level para-swimming programs should focus on promoting the inclusion of para-swimmers in swimming clubs, with integration being a step towards inclusion. The basic conditions needed to do so include facilities and logistics, financial, and human resource needs. Findings also highlight the importance of the local context …
A Framework For Integrated Ship Structure Lifecycle Management, Kai Li, Zheng-Yao Yi, Yan-Yun Yu, Ming Chen
A Framework For Integrated Ship Structure Lifecycle Management, Kai Li, Zheng-Yao Yi, Yan-Yun Yu, Ming Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
As the concept of ship structure lifecycle management has emerged, lots of endeavors have been made to apply computeraided (CAX) technologies to various business activities in the whole lifecycle of ship structure. However, information integration or data exchange were barely considered in most of CAX systems development. Hence the systems produce masses of data in their own formats, generate many information islands, and reduce the overall efficiency. It often needs much work of data preparation when downstream systems start working. Information integration can reduce data redundancy, form unified data platform and provide data resource for marine structure lifecycle management. This …

Samuel Pepys, Honor, And Emergent Bureaucracy In Later Seventeenth Century England, Michael Fitzhugh
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that the mentality of honor, deriving from ancient Germanic and perhaps Roman culture and the major component of the knightly medieval ethos, played an important role in the formation of modern bureaucracy. The dissertation makes this argument by offering a case study of Samuel Pepys, a civil servant in the naval administration of later Stuart England (the reigns of Charles II and James II). The argument begins with a Prologue that describes honor's most important social component, lordship, and discusses the ways in which current scholarship on the transition from early modern to fully modern times strongly …
Assessing The Impacts Of Ghana’S Oil And Gas Industry On Ecosystem Services And Smallholder Livelihoods, Michael Acheampong
Assessing The Impacts Of Ghana’S Oil And Gas Industry On Ecosystem Services And Smallholder Livelihoods, Michael Acheampong
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ghana discovered oil and gas within its shores in commercial quantities in the year, 2007. This discovery was hailed as a potential turn around for the country’s economic destiny. While this optimism may have been well-founded, there has been a relative lack of appreciation of the potential adverse implications of the industry on traditional smallholder livelihoods, and the critical ecosystems that form their basis. In many countries, discovery of natural resources results in negative environmental and social outcomes, due to the loss of local livelihoods and environmental degradation. Deterioration of local livelihoods occurs through several biophysical pathways, both simple and …
