The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 3: The American Middle Ages, Jan M. Ziolkowski Aug 2018

The Juggler Of Notre Dame And The Medievalizing Of Modernity, Volume 3: The American Middle Ages, Jan M. Ziolkowski

Juggling for Mary

This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life.

Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before …

Exploring Perceptions Of Creativity And Walkability In Omaha, Ne, Bradley Bereitschaft Aug 2018

Exploring Perceptions Of Creativity And Walkability In Omaha, Ne, Bradley Bereitschaft

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

It has been suggested that vibrant, walkable urban spaces may contribute to enhanced creativity and innovation by facilitating social interaction and physical activity, and serving as a source of inspiration. Using a survey and participant mapping exercise, this paper examines the potential spatial association between walkability and creativity in Omaha, Nebraska. Randomly selected participants were mailed a survey and map, requesting that they identify either three walkable or three creative locations within the Omaha area. The spatial correlation between the two variables was assessed in part using a newly developed spatial point pattern test. In addition to using perceptions of …

Emerging Balinese Franchised City Hotels In Legal Contexts: Toward Model Provisions Of Local Government Regulation And A Self-Regulation Framework, Ni Ketut Supasti Dharmawan, Made Suksma Prinjandhini Salain, Benjamin Hallewell Aug 2018

Emerging Balinese Franchised City Hotels In Legal Contexts: Toward Model Provisions Of Local Government Regulation And A Self-Regulation Framework, Ni Ketut Supasti Dharmawan, Made Suksma Prinjandhini Salain, Benjamin Hallewell

Indonesia Law Review

The existence of traditionally managed Balinese city hotels is increasingly threatened by the presence of chain hotels, which are internationally managed with an excellent standard of hotel hospitality. In a commercial context, franchised hotels benefit the franchisor, franchisee, and consumers in terms of the quality of hotel standardization and reputation. Still, such hotels remain incomparable to the Balinese city hotels managed traditionally by family owners. In the legal context, the emergence of various types of modern franchised city hotels in Bali is influenced by suitable laws and policies, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement with one of its …

How Can Community Engagement In The Local Past And Archaeological Research Be Mutually Beneficial? A Case Study In Community Archaeology From Sauvie Island, Oregon, Martin John Plumer Aug 2018

How Can Community Engagement In The Local Past And Archaeological Research Be Mutually Beneficial? A Case Study In Community Archaeology From Sauvie Island, Oregon, Martin John Plumer

Dissertations and Theses

Community archaeology's broader objectives include increasing public understanding of archaeology and making archaeology more relevant to people's day to day lives. Fulfilling these goals could be beneficial to the public in terms of their gaining more agency in, and more access to, archaeology; and it could be beneficial to archaeologists in terms of increasing public support for archaeological work. While many community archaeologists report success, few authors critically evaluate the experience and outcomes of community archaeology. As a result, little data-based understanding exists about what is gained through community archaeology. This project explores that question through three primary means: 1) …

Parental Coping In Filipino American Caregivers Of Children With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disabilities, Kathrynn Mabalot

Doctoral Dissertations

The coping mechanisms of Filipino American caregivers of children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities are explored using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). This study aimed to comprehend the subjective experience of caregivers and how they operationalize the established constructs of resilience. Particular focus is paid to the subjective experience of coping in Filipino American caregivers of children with special needs. The participants’ parenting experience and how they manage parenting stress are documented and analyzed using an interpretative phenomenological framework. Seminal studies on resilience, family resilience, and Filipino American psychology are discussed. The results yielded five broad domains (clarity of parenting …

"The Right To Play" The Establishment Of Playgrounds In The American City, Kyle James Fritch Aug 2018

"The Right To Play" The Establishment Of Playgrounds In The American City, Kyle James Fritch

Graduate Masters Theses

The Right to Play is focused on the development of playgrounds in America at the end of the 19th century. This overall development is shown through a focus on Boston, the city that instituted the first playground in the country and mirrors the similar rise of playgrounds in other cities. Throughout the 1800s children in cities played in the streets or any abandoned lot they could find. However, parents wanted what they believed to be a safer and healthier environment for their children to play. Along with this, reformers believed that these mostly immigrant and poor children were in need …

Natural Resources, Economic Growth And Geography, Rafael González-Val, Fernando Pueyo Aug 2018

Natural Resources, Economic Growth And Geography, Rafael González-Val, Fernando Pueyo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper we discuss the relationship between economic growth and natural resources at a global level, taking into account geography. With this aim, our model integrates elements of the theories of endogenous growth, natural resources and new economic geography. We find that an increase in the world growth rate can lead to a higher depletion of the natural resources following an increase in the world demand due to expansion in population. However, the consideration of geography and growth mechanisms make the relationship between growth and natural resources more complex, and can even lead to the opposite conclusion when the …

Aspen Recruitment In The Yellowstone Region Linked To Reduced Herbivory After Large Carnivore Restoration, Luke E. Painter, Robert L. Beschta, Eric J. Larsen, William J. Ripple Aug 2018

Aspen Recruitment In The Yellowstone Region Linked To Reduced Herbivory After Large Carnivore Restoration, Luke E. Painter, Robert L. Beschta, Eric J. Larsen, William J. Ripple

Aspen Bibliography

Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) recruitment during the 1980s–90s was suppressed by Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis) herbivory on winter ranges in the Yellowstone region, and saplings (young aspen taller than 2 m) were rare. Following the 1995–96 reintroduction of gray wolves (Canis lupus), browsing decreased and sapling recruitment increased in Yellowstone National Park. We compared aspen data from inside the park to data collected in three winter ranges outside the park. For most areas, the percentage of young aspen browsed annually was 80–100% in 1997–98, decreasing to 30–60% in 2011–15. Sapling recruitment was inversely …

From Storefront To Dashboard: The Use Of The Americans With Disabilities Act To Govern Websites, Kelby S. Carlson Aug 2018

From Storefront To Dashboard: The Use Of The Americans With Disabilities Act To Govern Websites, Kelby S. Carlson

Catholic University Law Review

The question of the effects of technological change on the interpretation of statutes is a complicated one. Particularly for statutes that govern a broad range of issues, the advent of new technology can precipitate re-examination of the rationale behind, and nature of, the relevant law. The Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted, in part, to give Americans with disabilities greater access to public space, allowing them to enjoy the advantages such access offers on an equal footing with the able-bodied. The adoption of digital technology across society and, in particular, the widespread ubiquity of the internet now raise questions about …

The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Understanding In Foreign Language Teaching In The Asian Context, Dian Ratnasari Aug 2018

The Importance Of Cross-Cultural Understanding In Foreign Language Teaching In The Asian Context, Dian Ratnasari

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Foreign language learning is not only about grammar or vocabulary but also life skill to be able to communicate. Furthermore, mastering culture along with learning language is essential. Language learners must have knowledge of cultural understanding because every language reflects many kinds of cultures. The same thing can happen between Indonesian and German. If the communication is not good, it could lead to something negative, especially when the communications are related to business cooperation as well as other important partnerships. So, in foreign language learning, teachers must teach the cultures of both the native and foreign language too, so that …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Increasing complexity in human-environment interactions at multiple watershed scales presents major challenges to sediment source apportionment data acquisition and analysis. Herein, we present a step-change in the application of Bayesian mixing models: Deconvolutional-MixSIAR (D-MIXSIAR) to underpin sustainable management of soil and sediment. This new mixing model approach allows users to directly account for the 'structural hierarchy' of a river basin in terms of sub-watershed distribution. It works by deconvoluting apportionment data derived for multiple nodes along the stream-river network where sources are stratified by sub-watershed. Source and mixture samples were collected from two watersheds that represented (i) a longitudinal mixed …

Beyond The Local: Places, People, And Brands In New England Beer Marketing, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl Aug 2018

Beyond The Local: Places, People, And Brands In New England Beer Marketing, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl

Sociology Faculty Publications

Despite decades of domination by a few large companies, the American beer market has seen a dramatic resurgence of microbreweries. Contrary to conventional oligopolistic market theories, small firms have consistently gained market share from their entrenched competitors. Researchers have attributed this success to ‘neolocalism.’ Through their marketing, microbreweries appeal to consumers’ desire for connections to real people and distinctive products from local places. However, no study has verified whether this pattern is most characteristic of microbreweries. With newer firms threatening their market share, larger firms might adopt neolocal claims, but little empirical attention has been directed at large brewers, and …

"Kovel’s contributions to a critique of psychiatry, of political theory and of the ruination of the biosphere have been pathfinding, highly revered, and reviewed and debated in highly prestigious journals and publications such as The New York Times. His work with revolutionaries around the globe (including sojourns in Nicaragua during the Sandinista revolution as just one of many examples), and his achievements alongside some of the leading political activists worldwide have secured for Kovel a premier place in the history of the left. But notoriety is not what drives Kovel’s work. What drives Kovel’s work is a relentless struggle for …

Beyond Blade Runner: A Dialogic Of The Everyday In Macau's Fictional Landscape, R Brown, Z Latham Aug 2018

Beyond Blade Runner: A Dialogic Of The Everyday In Macau's Fictional Landscape, R Brown, Z Latham

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The movie Blade Runner has been posited as 'a metaphor of the postmodern condition,' a proposition advanced by Giuliana Bruno and David Harvey. The hybridity of the landscape depicted in the film evokes postmodernism's emphasis on 'fiction rather than function, signs rather than things' drawing as Bruno suggests on objectified, synthesised images of Hong Kong or Tokyo Bruno. Narratives of film afford much in helping us to understand our world, and ourselves within it; sci-fi cinema is no exception to this, offering us "an arena in which we can explore exactly what it is be 'human'." Yet as David Byrne …

Review Of At Play In The Lions’ Den, A Biography And Memoir Of Daniel Berrigan By Jim Forest, William L. Portier

The Journal of Social Encounters

In 1957 Daniel Berrigan (1921-2016), a thirty-six-year-old Jesuit priest, about to begin teaching New Testament at Lemoyne College in his hometown of Syracuse, New York, published his first book. A book of poetry entitled Time Without Number, it won the Lamont Poetry Award and was also nominated for a National Book Award. At the time, he realized that, "Publishers would now take almost anything I chose to compile; the question of quality was largely in my own hands and my own sense of things" (47). In the next four years, he published two more books of poetry and two …

The Challenge Of Securing Kenya: Past Experience, Present Challenges And Future Prospects, Mumo Nzau, Mohammed Guyo Aug 2018

The Challenge Of Securing Kenya: Past Experience, Present Challenges And Future Prospects, Mumo Nzau, Mohammed Guyo

The Journal of Social Encounters

The dynamic nature of insecurity and mitigation strategies cannot be adequately understood without comparing the present conjuncture and the past experiences. This paper provides a temporal assessment of security in Kenya by scanning convergent and divergent insecurity experiences and mitigation strategies of the regimes of Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta. The security dynamics have been shaped by drivers located at local, national and global levels. The convergence of local insecurity and protracted transitional terrorist attacks has produced a high trajectory of insecurity with a negative impact on the economy, social cohesion and stability. The contradiction …

A Cross-Cultural Approach To Environmental And Peace Work: Wangari Maathai’S Use Of Mottainai In Kenya, Eddah Mutua, Kikuko Omori

The Journal of Social Encounters

Protecting the environment and nurturing peace are global concerns requiring scholarly attention across and within cultures. This essay proposes that cross-cultural exchange serves as an invaluable approach to the goal of communicating about creating a healthy environment and everyday peace. We examine how Wangari Maathai interpreted the meaning and purpose of Mottainai as a global call to save the environment. Mottainai is an ancient Japanese concept that means “Don’t waste! What a waste!” Of interest to us is establishing Maathai’s motivation to employ the concept of Mottainai as informed by her lived experiences in Kenya. The relevance of Mottainai to …
