Syrian Refugees In Turkey: A Security Perspective, Federico Donelli
Syrian Refugees In Turkey: A Security Perspective, Federico Donelli
New England Journal of Public Policy
This study investigates the nexus between the mass movement of people and security and foreign policy behaviors. The assertion is that refugee flows intensify security issues among decision makers and members of society; consequently, new fears and wider perceptions of threats have several implications for foreign policy agenda. The article focuses on the theoretical analysis of the securitization of migration and its impact on foreign policy and security policy. It also analyzes, from a security perspective, the effect on Turkey of the refugees who arrived en masse from Syria during the past six years. The article concludes with an analysis …

Response And Responsibilities Of The Republic Of Macedonia In The Migrant And Refugees Crises, Toni Mileski
Response And Responsibilities Of The Republic Of Macedonia In The Migrant And Refugees Crises, Toni Mileski
New England Journal of Public Policy
The Republic of Macedonia has had a long history of dealing with migrants and refugees. Since the late nineteenth century, conflicts, including the Balkan Wars (1912–1913), the First and Second World Wars, the Greek civil war (1945–1949), the Kosovo conflict, and the 2001 internal security crisis, have caused successive waves of migration. More recently, armed conflict in the Middle East, especially in Syria, caused a migrant and refugee crisis that has deeply affected the country. This article analyses how the Republic of Macedonia has responded to this crisis. It examines the initial period of the crisis, the measures, activities, and …

Infections In Older Adults: A Case-Based Discussion Series Emphasizing Antibiotic Stewardship, Alyson Michener, Robin L.P. Jump
Faculty Scholarship
Introduction: Compared with younger populations, adults 65 years and older are more likely to suffer infection-related morbidity and mortality, experience antibiotic-related adverse events, and acquire multidrug-resistant organisms. We developed a series of case-based discussions that stressed antibiotic stewardship while addressing management of common infections in older adults. Methods: Five 1-hour case-based discussions address recognition, diagnosis, and management of infections common in older adults, including those living in long-term care settings: urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and Clostridium difficile infection. The education was implemented at the skilled nursing centers at …

Territorialization Of The Internet Domain Name System, Marketa Trimble
Territorialization Of The Internet Domain Name System, Marketa Trimble
Pepperdine Law Review
Territorialization of the internet—the linking of the internet to physical geography—is a growing trend. Internet users have become accustomed to the conveniences of localized advertising, have enjoyed location-based services, and have witnessed an increasing use of geolocation and geoblocking tools by service and content providers who—for various reasons— either allow or block access to internet content based on users’ physical locations. This article analyzes whether, and if so how, the trend toward territorialization has affected the internet Domain Name System (DNS). As a hallmark of cyberspace governance that aimed to be detached from the territorially-partitioned governance of the physical world, …
Rights In A Cloud Of Dust: The Value And Qualities Of Farm Data And How Its Property Rights Should Be Viewed Moving Forward, Zachary R. Trail
Rights In A Cloud Of Dust: The Value And Qualities Of Farm Data And How Its Property Rights Should Be Viewed Moving Forward, Zachary R. Trail
Arkansas Law Review
Historically, technology growth has been slower in agriculture than other industries. However, a rising demand for food and an increase in efficient farm practices has changed this, leading to a rise in precision farming technologies. Now, entities that provide services or information to farmers need precision farming technologies to compete, and more farmers are adopting precision farming technologies. These technologies help farmers, but questions still remain about ownership rights in the data that farmers create.

The Impact Of Single-Family Rental Reits On Regional Housing Markets: A Case Study Of Nashville, Tn, Ken Chilton, Robert Mark Silverman, Rabia Chaudhry, Chihaungji Wang
Public Administration Faculty Research
The U.S. Congress authorized the creation of real estate investment trusts (REITs) in 1960 so companies could develop publically traded real estate investment portfolios. REITs focus on commercial property, retail property, and rental property. During the last decade, REITs became more active in regional housing markets across the U.S. Single-family rental (SFR) REITs have grown tremendously, buying up residential properties across the country. In some regional housing markets, SFR REITs own noticeable shares of single-family homes. In those settings, SFR REITs take large numbers of housing units off of real estate markets where homeownership transactions occur and manage these properties …

Update And Perspect Of Soybean Molecular Module-Based Designer Breeding In China, Tian Zhixi, Liu Baohui, Yang Yanping, Li Ming, Yao Yuan, Ren Xiaobo, Xue Yongbiao
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Soybean is one of the most economically important leguminous seed crops that provide the majority of plant proteins, and more than a quarter of the world's food and animal feed. At present, the soybean breeding technology in China mainly relys on conventional breeding, and the levels of both fundamental study and production lag behind those of the United States. Supported by "Innovative System of Designer Breeding by Molecular Modules", one of the strategic priority research programs of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese soybean scientists have dissected several important molecular modules controlling yield and seed quality, revealed the coupling mechanisms of …
A Field Guide For Weathering: Embodied Tactics For Collectives Of Two Or More Humans, Jennifer Mae Hamilton, Astrida Neimanis
A Field Guide For Weathering: Embodied Tactics For Collectives Of Two Or More Humans, Jennifer Mae Hamilton, Astrida Neimanis
The Goose
In our inherited meteorological practices and frameworks, weather conditions are managed for us in a range of ways (for example, through architecture, technology, commodity culture, infrastructure, economic rationale). This field guide brings the weather back to the body. A traditional field guide provides tools for the individual sovereign human subject to observe and document nature “over there”. In contrast, through a range of different activities, our field guide not only invites investigation and cataloguing of the field that we also comprise, but also challenges what counts as a noteworthy observation regarding the weather and also climate.

The Dual-System Problem In Complex Conflicts, Robert D. Lamb Dr., Melissa R. Gregg Ms.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Conflict and fragile environments are increasingly complex and unpredictable, but the U.S. policy system itself is much more complex and unpredictable than most leaders appreciate. In this monograph, the authors argue that until we get a grasp on this “dual-system problem,” the United States will fall further and further behind in its strategic ambitions.

Curriculum And Textbook Program Development Provision Comparison In China, Mexico, The Caribbean And Nigeria: The Way Forward, Babafemi Richard Adebayo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper explores textbook programmes and curriculum development in four distinct countries – China, Mexico and The Carribbeans. It compares their strengths and weaknesses, while establishing how Nigeria can adopt or improve on what it currently practices. It also highlights the various agencies responsible for curriculum and textbook development in the various countries, including their impact thus far. It concludes that Nigeria needs to develop content based on where the textbooks would be used, as practised in China. Furthermore, it advises that the government need to make approval process seamless and be of high standards without unnecessary partiality and unfavourable …

Innovations in machine learning and cloud‐based computing were merged with historical remote sensing and field data to provide the first moderate resolution, annual, percent cover maps of plant functional types across rangeland ecosystems to effectively and efficiently respond to pressing challenges facing conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. We utilized the historical Landsat satellite record, gridded meteorology, abiotic land surface data, and over 30,000 field plots within a Random Forests model to predict per‐pixel percent cover of annual forbs and grasses, perennial forbs and grasses, shrubs, and bare ground over the western United States from 1984 to 2017. Results were …
Evolution Of Grain Size Distributions And Bed Mobility During Hydrographs In Gravel-Bed Braided Rivers, Sarah Peirce, Peter Ashmore, Pauline Leduc
Evolution Of Grain Size Distributions And Bed Mobility During Hydrographs In Gravel-Bed Braided Rivers, Sarah Peirce, Peter Ashmore, Pauline Leduc
Geography & Environment Publications
Evolution of bed material mobility and bedload grain size distributions under a range of discharges is rarely observed in braiding in gravel-bed rivers. Yet, the changing of bedload grain size distributions with discharge is expected to be different from laterally stable, threshold, channels on which most gravel bedload theory and observation are based. Here, simultaneous observations of flow, bedload transport rate, and morphological change were made in a physical model of a gravel-bed braided river to document the evolution of grain size distributions and bed mobility over three experimental event hydrographs. Bedload transport rate and grain size distributions were measured …

Spatial And Temporal Fishing Patterns At The Outer Banks Of The Southern California Bight, Daniel J. Pondella Ii, Matthew J. Robart, Jeremy T. Claisse, Jonathan P. Williams, Chelsea M. Williams, Amanda J. Zellmer, Susan E. Piacenza
Western North American Naturalist
We analyzed recreational and commercial catch records from 1980 to 2009 for the fishing blocks associated with the 5 southern offshore banks of the Southern California Bight (Cortes Bank, Tanner Bank, Northeast Bank, Cherry Ridge, and Garrett Ridge). Recreational fishers and divers targeted pelagic taxa (e.g., tunas and Yellowtail) but instead landed more benthic taxa (e.g., rockfishes, Ocean Whitefish, and California Sheephead). For the commercial fisheries, pelagics (Bluefin Tuna, Albacore, Skipjack, Yellowfin Tuna, Pacific Bonito, and Swordfish) were the most important taxa and represented a significant proportion (8%–27%) of the landings of these fishes in the bight. These fishes were …

Traditions Of Early Human Groups In Baja California And Possible Routes For The Peopling Of The Peninsula, Harumi Fujita, Amira F. Ainis
Western North American Naturalist
Ideas concerning the initial peopling of the Baja California Peninsula have dramatically changed in recent decades. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the native inhabitants of the southern part of the Baja California Peninsula were believed by some to have come from Melanesia, based on the perceived similarity in skull morphology. Since the middle of the 20th century, most researchers propose that initial populations entered from the north by land, bringing with them 2 distinct cultural traditions. The first wave was thought to have been an incursion of Paleoindians with Clovis-type fluted points. The second wave refers to …
