3a2: American Chemical Companies: World War I And Beyond, Jason Szilagyi Sep 2018

3a2: American Chemical Companies: World War I And Beyond, Jason Szilagyi

Proceedings of Armistice & Aftermath: A World War I Symposium

The First World War created a relationship between the United States military and American chemical manufacturers that would have an enormous influence on how private companies impacted both the civilian and military lifestyles over the next century. By the time the United States entered the conflict, the government had already asked many companies to shift towards weapons production.

The relationship between private business and war has a long pedigree in military history. Companies were contracted to produce clothes, boots, weapons, food, and medicine in order to keep a nation’s military on the battlefield. With the world-spanning scale of the Great …

3b2: The Allied Expositionary Forces: From Encouragement To Commemoration Of Wwi, Steven A. Walton

Proceedings of Armistice & Aftermath: A World War I Symposium

Most people pass war memorials in their own town or while on the road with relatively little thought, though likely with reverence for those that include soldiers names of those who died or perhaps excitement and pride for those that include military hardware, such as cannon, aircraft, or tanks. Some may see trophies in particular and smile with patriotic/nationalistic pride or frown with disapproval (also patriotic in its won way). War memorials and trophies can be found in town squares and city halls, cemeteries, airports, at and VFW or Legion halls. Each combination of statue or trophy, with or without …

Arkansas’S Rosenwald Schools 1917-1924, Chelsea Deserea Mcnutt Sep 2018

Arkansas’S Rosenwald Schools 1917-1924, Chelsea Deserea Mcnutt

Student Theses and Dissertations

This work explores Arkansas Rosenwald Schools in rural African American communities from 1917-1924. Jim Crow laws governed the lives of black southerners throughout the region. Such laws unjustly marginalized them, their communities, and their schools. In 1868, Arkansas passed Act 52, which mandated segregated and unequal schools for black and white Arkansans. Black Arkansans, both children and adults, lacked educational opportunities, especially those residing in rural areas. African Americans, of all socioeconomic backgrounds, understood the importance of education. Education allowed black Arkansans to reshape their lives and futures. Much of this effort was aided by resources from the Rosenwald Fund. …

State Capacity And Naval Buildup : The Sino-Japanese Divergence In The Late Nineteenth Century, Xinyi Shen Sep 2018

State Capacity And Naval Buildup : The Sino-Japanese Divergence In The Late Nineteenth Century, Xinyi Shen

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The East Asian modernization divergence in the late nineteenth century has long puzzled historians and social scientists. As Qing China, given its vast territory, large population and dominating influence spreading to neighboring countries, failed to modernize herself as its small island neighbor Japan did after the forced opening up by the West. One important divergence is their military capability, especially that of navy. The relatively higher capacity of the Imperial Japanese Navy has played a decisive role in its victory over the Beiyang Fleet in the 1894/95 First Sino-Japanese War. Following the defeat, Qing China was burdened with huge indemnity, …

Prediction Of Soil Formation As A Function Of Age Using The Percolation Theory Approach, Markus Egli, Allen G. Hunt, Dennis Dahms, Gerald Raab, Curdin Derungs, Salvatore Raimondi, Fang Yu Sep 2018

Prediction Of Soil Formation As A Function Of Age Using The Percolation Theory Approach, Markus Egli, Allen G. Hunt, Dennis Dahms, Gerald Raab, Curdin Derungs, Salvatore Raimondi, Fang Yu

Faculty Work

Recent modeling and comparison with field results showed that soil formation by chemical weathering, either from bedrock or unconsolidated material, is limited largely by solute transport. Chemical weathering rates are proportional to solute velocities. Nonreactive solute transport described by non-Gaussian transport theory appears compatible with soil formation rates. This change in understanding opens new possibilities for predicting soil production and depth across orders of magnitude of time scales. Percolation theory for modeling the evolution of soil depth and production was applied to new and published data for alpine and Mediterranean soils. The first goal was to check whether the empirical …

Barriers To “New Mobility”: A Community-Informed Approach To Smart Cities Technology, Aaron Golub, Vivian Satterfield Sep 2018

Barriers To “New Mobility”: A Community-Informed Approach To Smart Cities Technology, Aaron Golub, Vivian Satterfield

PSU Transportation Seminars

There is an active debate about the potential costs and benefits of emerging “smart mobility” systems, especially in how they will serve communities already facing transportation challenges. This presentation will describe the results of an assessment of these equity impacts in the context of lower-income areas of Portland, Oregon, based on a mixture of quantitative and qualitative research.

Portland, Oregon’s proposal for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge, “Ubiquitous Mobility for Portland,” focuses on developing mobility solutions that would serve traditionally underserved populations (low-income, communities of color, and residents with mobility challenges). This study found that by lowering …

Public Health And Well-Being Innovation In The Natural Environment Sector: Lessons From The Uk And Finland, J Tredinnick-Rowe, T Taylor, A Tuohino Sep 2018

Public Health And Well-Being Innovation In The Natural Environment Sector: Lessons From The Uk And Finland, J Tredinnick-Rowe, T Taylor, A Tuohino

Peninsula Medical School

Thirty-one ethnographic interviews were conducted with health and well-being sector businesses to examine the dynamics of innovation in the UK (Cornwall) and across Finland. The Nordic countries are at the leading edge of these types of public health nature-based interventions, consequently, Finland was chosen as a comparator to the UK. We found that the construction of natural environment based services for health and well-being follows a five-step model: (1) Services are specifically designed for individuals’ needs; (2) These services are based around routine behaviours of that individual and their personal and social habits; (3) This creates a process of normalisation …

Nordic Seas Polynyas And Their Role In Preconditioning Marine Productivity During The Last Glacial Maximum., Jochen Knies, Denizcan Köseoğlu, Leif Rise, Nicole Baeten, Valérie K. Bellec, Reidulv Bøe, Martin Klug, Giuliana Panieri, Patrycja E. Jernas, Simon T. Belt Sep 2018

Nordic Seas Polynyas And Their Role In Preconditioning Marine Productivity During The Last Glacial Maximum., Jochen Knies, Denizcan Köseoğlu, Leif Rise, Nicole Baeten, Valérie K. Bellec, Reidulv Bøe, Martin Klug, Giuliana Panieri, Patrycja E. Jernas, Simon T. Belt

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Arctic and Antarctic polynyas are crucial sites for deep-water formation, which helps sustain global ocean circulation. During glacial times, the occurrence of polynyas proximal to expansive ice sheets in both hemispheres has been proposed to explain limited ocean ventilation and a habitat requirement for marine and higher-trophic terrestrial fauna. Nonetheless, their existence remains equivocal, not least due to the hitherto paucity of sufficiently characteristic proxy data. Here we demonstrate polynya formation in front of the NW Eurasian ice sheets during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), which resulted from katabatic winds blowing seaward of the ice shelves and upwelling of warm, …

A New Mass Incarceration: Community Corrections, Carceral Geography, And Spatial Power, Iolanthe Brooks Sep 2018

A New Mass Incarceration: Community Corrections, Carceral Geography, And Spatial Power, Iolanthe Brooks

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

In the age of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow (2010), promises to depopulate overcrowded American prisons, and a mainstream acknowledgement of mass incarceration, the American criminal justice system is anything but inert. Instead, modalities of punishment are shifting, particularly towards community-located corrections involving GPS surveillance. This paper seeks to examine this evolution of the carceral state through the marriage of two theoretical lenses: carceral geography and Foucauldian spatial power analysis. Carceral geography offers a theory of the embodied nuance of movement. Its work revolves around the three mobilities of the carceral system: movement to/from, within, and between prisons. This …

Circular Economy Inter-Cluster Knowledge Creation And Orchestration Using Internet Of Things And Trust Technologies, Angelo Fienga, Faith Legendre, Phil Maynard, Hazim Dahir, Mark Eggleston

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described herein for an architectural model of a focused, integrated method for the use of collaborative, logistical, technologic, and commercial frameworks. These techniques are globally inclusive yet secure. This reduces barriers to participation while capturing and deducing relevant knowledge for continuous system improvement. The knowledge provides integral value to relevant individuals, groups, companies, and municipalities through an interconnection mechanism that spans geographies and industry verticals. This ability to create knowledge and then deliver it to the stakeholders in the Circular Economy (CE) may be a catalyst for new value creation.

Single-Use And Sustainability: Continued Studies Using Lca Tools, William Whitford Sep 2018

Single-Use And Sustainability: Continued Studies Using Lca Tools, William Whitford

Single-Use Technologies III: Scientific and Technological Advancements

The issue of plastic materials in our environment has been of recent interest. The biotechnology community has responded by examining the effects of single-use systems employed in biomanufacturing. It is natural to emphasize a particular set of environmental concerns over others, and especially the more visible ones. But, in supporting truly sustainable manufacturing systems, it is important to consider all relevant types of pollution or environmental stress. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a science-based approach for evaluating the environmental impacts, benefits, trade-offs, and burden shifts of a process in an objective format. It considers production process’ materials, equipment and …

Assessing Sample Extraction E Ciencies For The Analysis Of Complex Unresolved Mixtures Of Organic Pollutants: A Comprehensive Non-Target Approach, Sj Rowland, S Samanipour, Ja Baz-Lomba, Mj Reid, E Ciceri, P Nilsson, Kv Thomas

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

The comprehensive extraction recovery assessment of organic analytes from complex samples such as oil field produced water (PW) is a challenging task. A targeted approach is usually used for recovery and determination of compounds in these types of analysis. Here we suggest a more comprehensive and less biased approach for the extraction recovery assessment of complex samples. This method combines conventional targeted analysis with a non-targeted approach to evaluate the extraction recovery of complex mixtures. Three generic extraction methods: liquid-liquid extraction (Lq), and solid phase extraction using HLB cartridges (HLB), and the combination of ENV+ and C8 (ENV) cartridges, were …

A Virtual Teams Model For Supporting Maritime Technology Management, G Berner, R Hopcraft, J Scanlan, M Lutzhoft, J Earthy Sep 2018

A Virtual Teams Model For Supporting Maritime Technology Management, G Berner, R Hopcraft, J Scanlan, M Lutzhoft, J Earthy

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Computer and networking technology on board ships is increasing in complexity as the levels of automation and monitoring at sea evolve. Ships are acknowledged to be a System of systems, including both IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operational technology). A virtual team that includes members of the various on-board departments, shore based technical support staff and vendors perform management of technical equipment, largely in isolation. It is possible to conclude that the technology installation is one of the only operational aspects of a vessel, where no one has the full picture and could drive a coordinated response to a major …

Laguna Madre Estuary Program Environmental Strategic Plan - Final Report, Kim D. Jones, Lucy Camacho, T. Sinha, Omar Al-Qudah, Hudson R. Deyoe, Augusto Sanchez Gonzalez, Jungseok Ho, Javier Guerrero

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

The goal of this effort is to establish a framework of fundamental information and critical ideas to serve as a basis to assist in supporting legislation to found the 29th National Estuary Program for the Laguna Madre of the Gulf coast of Texas.

The National Estuary Program (NEP) was established by the Clean Water Act Amendments of 1987 (Section 320) to protect nationally significant estuaries threatened by development, pollution and overuse. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administers the NEP. The Corpus Christi Bay NEP (now the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuary Program) was among the last estuaries accepted into the …

Open Access: Getting On The Same Page: What If Ir Managers And Oa Policy Administrators Could Have Everything They Desire From Publishers?, John G. Dove

Charleston Library Conference

Directors of scholarly communication and others responsible for institutional policies with regard to repositories and open access have an increasingly complex landscape to manage. University presses, even those with a strong support for open access, often have subscription journals. Are there areas where these subscription journals can follow OA-friendly practices that can help the IR managers and OA policy administrators? If so, maybe these can be practices that other journal publishers can be pressured to provide?

We bring together three panelists from research universities with diverse responsibilities of administering an open access policy, managing an institutional repository, and managing journal …

Growing A Sustainable City: The Question Of Urban Agriculture, Hamil Pearsall Sep 2018

Growing A Sustainable City: The Question Of Urban Agriculture, Hamil Pearsall

Sustainability Seminar Series

This presentation examines urban agriculture in Philadelphia and highlights the challenges of institutionalizing this historically informal urban activity into formal city policy over the last two decades. Urban agriculture has become a symbol of Philadelphia’s economic revitalization, sustainability, and increasingly, its gentrification. Often characterized by advocates as an urban panacea, gardening and farming seem to promise solutions to many different urban problems, such as blighted vacant lots, food insecurity, stormwater runoff, and neighborhood decline. However, questions of land tenure, the use of economic resources, and the long-term viability of urban agriculture shape the political discourse about the future of growing …

Critical Business Collections: Examining Key Issues Using A Social Justice Lens, Heather A. Howard, Katharine V. Macy, Corey Seeman, Alyson S. Vaaler Sep 2018

Critical Business Collections: Examining Key Issues Using A Social Justice Lens, Heather A. Howard, Katharine V. Macy, Corey Seeman, Alyson S. Vaaler

Charleston Library Conference

Academic librarians perform a balancing act between the needs of patrons, licensing restrictions, and the missions of our libraries. As part of the work to develop our campus collections, academic business librarians work with both schools and commercial vendors to provide resources that our business students and faculty require. Business publishers charge academic customers pennies on the dollar for access, but are likely to seek protections for their intellectual content by placing usage restrictions that run counter to what librarians would prefer. This can cause difficulties for librarians in serving their unique populations. This also can run counter to the …

Prologue To Perfectly Parsing Proxy Patterns, Jeremy M. Brown, Gretchen M. Smith Sep 2018

Prologue To Perfectly Parsing Proxy Patterns, Jeremy M. Brown, Gretchen M. Smith

Charleston Library Conference

As libraries spend an increasing percentage of precious collection funds on electronic resources, important questions arise to drive collection management decisions: What is being used? How much? and finally, Who is using our resources? Vendor-supplied statistics can help answer the first two questions, but we have encountered specific questions about our users at Mercer University.

To help answer this question, we turned to our proxy server logs and began a pilot study in the spring semester 2017. This presentation will explain the methodology we used in mining data from our proxy server logs in combination with our existing user database. …
