Subsidizing Climate Change: How The Agricultural Business Is Harming Our Planet, Caroline Berejka May 2018

Subsidizing Climate Change: How The Agricultural Business Is Harming Our Planet, Caroline Berejka

Student Theses 2015-Present

In exploring the concept of environmental sustainability in the modern age, it is important to look at the practices of the agriculture industry and the role of agricultural production in the multifaceted issue of climate change. The agriculture industry's overwhelming power in the US government and its resistance to moving toward more sustainable practices is an issue that the average American has little awareness of. In order to push the movement of environmental sustainability forward, it is necessary to examine the economic reasons for the slow shift towards sustainable agriculture and possible incentives for industrial farmers to modify their practices. …

Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender May 2018

Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper aims to shed light on the dissonance caused by the superimposition of Dominant Human Systems on Natural Systems. I highlight the synthetic nature of Dominant Human Systems as egoic and linguistic phenomenon manufactured by a mere portion of the human population, which renders them inherently oppressive unto peoples and landscapes whose wisdom were barred from the design process. In pursuing a radical pragmatic approach to mending the simultaneous oppression and destruction of the human being and the earth, I highlight the necessity of minimizing entropic chaos caused by excess energy expenditure, an essential feature of systems that aim …

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

Our Environmental Studies senior capstone class (ENVS 470) wrote and submitted an application for a $15,000 grant from the Oregon Watershed and Enhancement Board (OWEB) to restore a section of the college’s property along Cozine Creek. We worked in partnership with the Greater Yamhill Watershed Council (GYWC) and Upshot LLC, a local contractor, to develop a restoration plan. The initial step will be to control invasive species, mainly Himalayan blackberry and English ivy. We then will plant native species such as Oregon grape, salmonberry, and Indian plum. The site will have five treatment options including combinations of manual and chemical …

Worms In Urban Pacific Nw Forests: A Preliminary Study, William Mccuen, Delaney Riggins, Samantha Moellmer, Nancy Broshot

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

In the past few years, we have been analyzing soils in Forest Park (Portland, Oregon) and at control sites in the Mount Hood National Forest to elucidate causes for the dearth of seedlings and saplings in the urban forest. We found significantly deeper O horizons, higher levels of C, and a higher C/N ratio at control sites than at sites in Forest Park. One suggestion as to a cause of our soil findings was the presence of invasive earthworms at more urban sites. Last summer, we censused earthworm populations using a mustard extraction technique at sites in Forest Park and …

Environmental Impacts On Guam's Water Security And Sustainable Management Of The Resource, Masoud Khalaj-Teimoury May 2018

Environmental Impacts On Guam's Water Security And Sustainable Management Of The Resource, Masoud Khalaj-Teimoury

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Impacts of climate change on the already severely strained freshwater resources of approximately 1000 inhabited islands in the Pacific Ocean are of great concern. The Western Pacific region is one of the world's most vulnerable when it comes to risk of disaster particularly for the several of the low-lying coral islands. Impacts have already been felt regarding the security of water resources that would directly impact agriculture, forestry, tourism and other industry-related sectors. The ironic and tragic aspect of the environmental crisis of greenhouse emissions is the fact that those parts of the world least responsible for creating the water …

Where The Midwest Ends And The Great Plains Begin, Brad Tennant May 2018

Where The Midwest Ends And The Great Plains Begin, Brad Tennant

Studies in Midwestern History

There are a number of historical perspectives and events that justify the Great Plains as the end of the Midwest and the beginning of the American West. The most noticeable differences begin at approximately the 100th meridian as changes with climatic conditions, vegetation, and animal life become more readily apparent. In addition, historical events, such as the last major United States-Indian confrontation at Wounded Knee and the non-Indian settlement of the Northern Great Plains in the late nineteenth century, coincided with the proclaimed end of the frontier experience in United States history.

Farming The Bronx: The Potential For Controlled-Environment Agriculture To Address Environmental Degradation And Urban Social Issues, Reyna Wang

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper and design proposal explores the possibilities of controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) to address the issue of impending global food insecurity and widespread loss of ecosystem services while providing communities in the Bronx with tools for social empowerment. Chapter 1 presents quantitative data from sources like the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment regarding the widespread environmental impacts of industrial agriculture and shows how these harmful impacts can be limited or reduced through a transition to CEA in urban areas. Chapter 2 describes CEA design methods and technologies that can be combined in different ways to suit a diverse variety of settings and …

The Ethics Of Environmental Litigation, Jenna Marie Dibenedetto May 2018

The Ethics Of Environmental Litigation, Jenna Marie Dibenedetto

Student Theses 2015-Present

Abstract

We are raised from the early days of our youth to distinguish right from wrong, evil from good. Though there are many careers that have easily distinguishable ethics from their day of creation, others require spend their entire professional careers floating in a grey area. Being a lawyer can leave you in limbo very often. The ethical battle between prosecuting people whose actions go against everything you believe in and defending someone who actions you struggle to rationalize, looking for a “nail in the coffin” or finding a way to pry it open can play a large role in …

Sustainable Interiors: Green Design Methods And Its Influence On Ecopsychology, Tillie M. O'Reilly May 2018

Sustainable Interiors: Green Design Methods And Its Influence On Ecopsychology, Tillie M. O'Reilly

Student Theses 2015-Present

The profession of interior design proposes to enhance interior spaces through the use of furnishings, lighting, and color palettes while adhering to safety standards and building codes. Although designers follow strict codes to beautify a space, they may disregard the natural environment when choosing materials that are aesthetically pleasing. It is difficult for designers to design sustainably when they must balance many demands in design such as functionality, aesthetics, safety, and clients’ tastes. This paper addresses how sustainable design methods can be incorporated into the field of interior design to benefit the environment, while simultaneously improving the beauty of the …

Inch By Inch: Expanding The Community Garden Programs In New York City, Michael Bailey May 2018

Inch By Inch: Expanding The Community Garden Programs In New York City, Michael Bailey

Student Theses 2015-Present

The importance of community gardens in New York City is twofold: first as a portal to a real natural aesthetic in an otherwise brick and concrete urban jungle, and second as a sustainable alternative to agribusinesses that are dominant in the contemporary private sector. This paper addresses the issue of the diminishing community garden support in NYC, especially in middle and lower-income areas. The introduction is a personal anecdote about the poor quality of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) gardens, and the work being done behind the scenes to improve them. Chapter one provides data showing the scope and …

Mitigating Bioiversity Loss Of Native Plants, Jamie Ana Grigonis May 2018

Mitigating Bioiversity Loss Of Native Plants, Jamie Ana Grigonis

Student Theses 2015-Present

Growing up harvesting from my own vegetable garden and going from nursery to nursery with my mother, it has been extremely evident that plant biodiversity is more than just privet along driveways and carnations in window boxes. Plant biodiversity is often overlooked but crucial to having a healthy and thriving environment. Without certain plants, our ecosystems will crumble and this needs to be addressed now while it’s still at a level we can grow from. In my internship I am working alongside the director of the Thain Family Forest at the New York Botanical Gardens in order to get a …

Apicentrism In City Parks: Cultivating Honey Bee Prosperity In The Face Of Colony Collapse Disorder, John Hughes May 2018

Apicentrism In City Parks: Cultivating Honey Bee Prosperity In The Face Of Colony Collapse Disorder, John Hughes

Student Theses 2015-Present

One of the most pertinent ecological crises of the 2010s is the frightening ambiguity of colony collapse disorder. As honey bee populations continue to be decimated in unprecedented numbers, this epidemic will exert profound effects on human populations both ecologically and economically. This thesis explores the epidemic using quantifiable and ecological information about the honey bee and pesticides. From this base, this thesis then explores pesticide use in New York City Parks in relation to the disorder. Finally, the thesis challenges readers to adopt a political and philosophical shift towards an environmental ethic that will take better care of the …

A Green Opportunity: Why American Conservatives Will Benefit By Fighting Climate Change, Byrne W. Cronin May 2018

A Green Opportunity: Why American Conservatives Will Benefit By Fighting Climate Change, Byrne W. Cronin

Student Theses 2015-Present

For much of the twenty-first century, there has been a debate in America over the existence of anthropogenic climate change. This debate is unnecessary and polarizing, as liberals often advocate for climate-change-mitigation policy while conservatives often declare anthropogenic climate change false or unimportant. Along with this, debate over climate change largely prevents effective policy from being passed in the US, which is a problem because as one of the most populous, polluting and powerful countries, we have a significant impact on how the fight to mitigate climate change proceeds.

The goal of this thesis is to work towards ending that …

Pacific In Peril: Micronesia’S Food Security, Development, And Health Under A Changing Climate, Yota Pacifico Oue May 2018

Pacific In Peril: Micronesia’S Food Security, Development, And Health Under A Changing Climate, Yota Pacifico Oue

Student Theses 2015-Present

This thesis focuses on food security in Micronesian Island nations and how the effects of climate change are detrimental to the region’s fisheries resources and agricultural production. Because the Micronesian islands are on the forefront of climate change, the effects of ocean acidification, rising sea levels, and higher mean surface areas pose immediate risks to the region’s food security. Not only does climate change threaten both sources of the region’s food – fisheries and traditional agriculture – but includes ramifications for economic development, environmental conservation, and public health. Each island nation in the Pacific is entitled to an Exclusive Economic …

The Planet On Our Plates: The History, Economics, And Ethics Of An Unsustainable Globalized Food System, Erin Wattley

Student Theses 2015-Present

In today’s age of globalization, the world’s food systems are no exception to this dominant economic trend. Although globalization has ushered in an unprecedented economic boom, the globalization of the food system has negative implications for the environment, including the pollution and energy costs of transporting food around the globe, the exploitation of land for farming, particularly in developing countries, and the degradation and depletion of natural resources. This paper seeks to address the environmental problems associated with the globalized food system and provide possible solutions to those problems, using the food system of Bronx residents as a case study …

The Impacts Of Green Spaces On Crime In New York City, Matthew Edward Iannone Jr. May 2018

The Impacts Of Green Spaces On Crime In New York City, Matthew Edward Iannone Jr.

Student Theses 2015-Present

From the early 1960s through the mid-1990s, crime in New York City ran rampant. With a gradually dwindling police during this time, a high unemployment rate, and an rapidly increasing metropolitan population, crime peaked in the early 1990s, with the murder rate hitting a record-high of 2,245 in 1990. When Mayor Rudy Giuliani took office in 1994 and appoint Bill Bratton as the NYPD police commissioner, these rates immediately plunged. Numerous factors may have contributed to this sudden decline in crime: the police force grew significantly through the 1990s, more criminals were placed and held in prison, and the economic …
