Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

We report the synthesis of a gallium complex incorporating redox-active pyridyl nitroxide ligands. The (pyNO−)2GaCl complex was prepared in 85% yield via a salt metathesis route and was characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and theory. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy and electrochemistry were used to access the optical and electrochemical properties of the complex, respectively. Our discussion focuses primarily on a comparison of the gallium complex to the corresponding aluminum derivative and shows that although the complexes are very similar, small differences in the electronic structure of the complexes can be correlated to the identity of the metal.

Enemies Of The Nation: Understanding The Hungarian State’S Relationship To Humanitarian Ngos, Andria D. Timmer Ph.D., Danielle Docka-Filipek Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) occupy a very ambiguous role in society. Historically, NGOs have been both heralded as democracy in action and criticized for being complicit supporters of neoliberalism. Now, in certain contexts, they are rendered as enemies of the nation. In this article, we examine the evolution of nongovernmental organizations in Hungary, a nation where this transformation is exceedingly clear. Hungary provides a pertinent case example to explore the manner in which civil society as an amorphous, ill-defined category becomes a stand-in for whatever the state needs to protect its interests. The current discourse on NGOs in Hungary plays out …

High-Bandwidth Iop Sensing Backscatter Transceiver, Mark Manuel Jun 2018

High-Bandwidth Iop Sensing Backscatter Transceiver, Mark Manuel

Electrical Engineering

This document describes the design and build of a mobile phone attachment that communicates with an ASIC embedded smart contact lens. The portable device enables patients and clinicians to conveniently and instantaneously measure intraocular pressure (IOP). The device replaces bulky and expensive benchtop RF synthesizer and signal analyzer machines required for communication to the smart contact lens into a portable and convenient device. The transceiver transmits VHF ISM band radio and can capture reflected backscatter On-Off-Keying modulated message signals at bandwidths from DC to 130MHz.

Absolute Configuration Of 2,2',3,3',6-Pentachlorinatedbiphenyl (Pcb 84) Atropisomers, Xueshu Li, Sean R. Parkin, Hans-Joachim Lehmler Jun 2018

Absolute Configuration Of 2,2',3,3',6-Pentachlorinatedbiphenyl (Pcb 84) Atropisomers, Xueshu Li, Sean R. Parkin, Hans-Joachim Lehmler

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Nineteen polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, such as 2,2′,3,3′,6-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 84), display axial chirality because they form stable rotational isomers, or atropisomers, that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. Although chiral PCBs undergo atropselective biotransformation and atropselectively alter biological processes, the absolute structure of only a few PCB atropisomers has been determined experimentally. To help close this knowledge gap, pure PCB 84 atropisomers were obtained by semi-preparative liquid chromatography with two serially connected Nucleodex β-PM columns. The absolute configuration of both atropisomers was determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The PCB 84 atropisomer eluting first and second on the Nucleodex β-PM …

Sea Urchins Reduce Fish Grazing On Algae, June 2018, Alice Beittel Jun 2018

Sea Urchins Reduce Fish Grazing On Algae, June 2018, Alice Beittel

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Overfishing of reef ecosystems poses a threat to key trophic interactions that regulate the food competition between fish and the sea urchin, Diadema mexicanum. An important ecosystem engineer, D. mexicanum can help control for positive coral growth at intermediate levels but at high levels can erode coral reefs and at low levels results in algae dominated reefs. Due to the overfishing of echinoderm-predators in Bahía de Cuajiniquil, Costa Rica. D. mexicanum populations are less regulated and have the potential to outcompete other herbivorous fish. My overarching question is how does Diadema mexicanum grazing impact fish feeding intensity? To answer this …

Foraging And Feeding Guild Characteristics In Relation To Fishes Chased From Microspathodon Dorsalis Nesting Territories, June 2018, Jenna Sparks Jun 2018

Foraging And Feeding Guild Characteristics In Relation To Fishes Chased From Microspathodon Dorsalis Nesting Territories, June 2018, Jenna Sparks

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Recognizing nest predators is an important adaptation for successful reproduction. Nest guarding ability is likely, in part, a sexually selected trait. Male giant damselfish (Microspathodon dorsalis) defend by chasing and biting at fishes that encroach upon their nests. In my study, I observed the relationship between intruder fish phenotype and behavior and response of 16 guarding males. In a series of 10-minute observation periods, I determined that Acapulco damselfish (Stegastes acapulcoensis) were chased away the most times. To account for variability of fish presence, I additionally noted the number of chases by resident M. dorsalis, standardized for the number of …

The Effects Of Forest Fragmentation On Avian Nest Predation In The Monteverde Region, June 2018, Sara Gibbons Jun 2018

The Effects Of Forest Fragmentation On Avian Nest Predation In The Monteverde Region, June 2018, Sara Gibbons

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Habitat fragmentation is the division and reduction of a large, continuous area of habitat into smaller pieces. In nearly all cases tropical rain forest fragmentation has led to a loss of local species due to an increase in predators, a shift in microclimate, and a decrease in habitat area. Forested avian species are especially affected, showing a significant decrease in abundance and nest success in forest fragments. I investigated the predation rates on thrush nests in two fragmented sites. The first site was La Calandria, which is an isolated forest patch. The second site was Bajo Del Tigre which is …

Environmental Health Regulation In The Trump Era: How President Trump’S Two-For-One Regulatory Plan Impacts Environmental Regulation, Elizabeth Ann Glass Geltman

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article explores the Trump regulatory reform agenda and its potential impact on environmental determinants of health. The Article begins with a discussion of the Department of Commerce’s (DOC or Commerce) initial fact-finding investigation to evaluate the impact of federal regulations on domestic manufacturing. The Article next presents an overview of the Trump administration’s regulatory reform formula as announced in E.O. 13771 and the interim guidance explaining E.O. 13771 and E.O. 13777 (the executive order announcing the Trump administration’s plans to enforce the regulatory reform plan announced in E.O. 13771). The Article then examines the federal agency initiatives undertaken in …

Evolution Of Water Institutions In The Indus River Basin: Reflections From The Law Of The Colorado River, Erum Sattar, Jason Robison, Daniel Mccool

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Transboundary water institutions in the Indus River Basin can be fairly characterized as broken in key respects. International relations between India and Pakistan over the Indus Waters Treaty, as well as interprovincial relations within Pakistan over the 1991 Water Accord, speak to this sentiment. Stemming from research undertaken by the authors for the Harvard Water Federalism Project and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this Article seeks to spur the evolution of the Indus River Basin’s water institutions by offering a comparative perspective from North America’s most “institutionally encompassed” basin, the Colorado River Basin. Mindful of the importance …

Garden Pollinators And The Potential For Ecosystem Service Flow To Urban And Peri-Urban Agriculture, Gail A. Langellotto, Andony Melathopoulos, Isabella Messer, Aaron Anderson, Nathan Mcclintock, Lucas Costner

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hedgerows, flowering strips, and natural areas that are adjacent to agricultural land have been shown to benefit crop production, via the provision of insect pollinators that pollinate crops. However, we do not yet know the extent to which bee habitat in the form of urban gardens might contribute to pollination services in surrounding crops. We explored whether gardens might provision pollinators to adjacent agricultural areas by sampling bees from gardens in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, and estimating typical foraging distances in the context of commercialand residential-scale pollination-dependent crops up to 1000 m from garden study sites. We estimate that …

A National Pragmatic Safety Limit For Nuclear Weapon Quantities, Joshua M. Pearce, David C. Denkenberger Jun 2018

A National Pragmatic Safety Limit For Nuclear Weapon Quantities, Joshua M. Pearce, David C. Denkenberger

Department of Materials Science and Engineering Publications

This study determines the nuclear pragmatic limit where the direct physical negative consequences of nuclear weapons use are counter to national interests, by assuming all unknowns are conservatively optimistic. The only effect considered is nuclear winter (“nuclear autumn” in the low weapons limits) and the resultant effects on the aggressor nation. First, the ability of low nuclear weapon limits is probed for maintaining deterrence in the worst-case scenario of attacking the most-populous nation. Second, the ability of aggressor nations to feed themselves is assessed without trade and industry resultant from a nuclear attack causing “nuclear autumn” (10% global agricultural shortfall). …

Determinants Of Organic Cotton Apparel Purchase: A Comparison Of Young Consumers In The Usa And South Korea, Tae-Im Han Jun 2018

Determinants Of Organic Cotton Apparel Purchase: A Comparison Of Young Consumers In The Usa And South Korea, Tae-Im Han

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The purpose of this research was to examine consumers from distinct cultural groups and identify similarities and differences in their green purchase behaviors. The sample consisted of consumers from the U.S.A. and South Korea and the theory of planned behavior was used as a theoretical framework to test the influence of diverse constructs on consumers' purchase intentions toward organic cotton apparel. For both countries, perceived behavioral control (PBC) and descriptive norms were strong predictors of purchase intentions and injunctive norms strongly influenced attitude formation. However, the study also found different results between the two groups. For example, while attitude was …

Adapting Extension And Outreach Content To Audiences' Educational Interests, Bernabas Wolde, Pankaj Lal, Pralhad Burli, Pricila Iranah, John Munsell, Jianbang Gan, Eric Taylor

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

For various, largely unknown reasons, decision makers do not have equal interest in all Extension and outreach topics pertinent to a particular concept. This situation hampers Extension's ability to effectively deliver information and efficiently allocate limited resources. Using survey data, we identified heterogeneous preference for various topics related to the concept of woody bioenergy, our case study subject, and built profiles of forestland owners who expressed interest in topics that received above-average and below-average preference rates. Given our results, we argue for using this approach in objectively ranking audiences' educational interests in various forest and nonforest products and services and …

Dayak Lundayeh: A Report From The Border, Luqman Hakim Zainuri Jun 2018

Dayak Lundayeh: A Report From The Border, Luqman Hakim Zainuri

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Dayak Lundayeh: A Report from the Border" Luqman H. Zainuri explores the vulnerabilities and potential of national disintegration coming from indigenous communities in Indonesia. In particular, the paper focuses on one of the communities which has been largely ignored, the Dayak people, who have played an important role in the border between Indonesia and Malaysia in Borneo Island. The Dayak indigenous people which inhabit this highland plateau are known as the Lun Bawang, on the Malaysian side, and the Lun Dayeh (or Lundayeh) in the Indonesian side. Both groups are linguistically and culturally the same. This paper …

Water Scarcity And Population Displacement In Southern Iraq: Perceptions And Reality, Tiba Fatli Jun 2018

Water Scarcity And Population Displacement In Southern Iraq: Perceptions And Reality, Tiba Fatli

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that water scarcity causes significant displacement in Iraq’s southern region. It makes two related sub-points. First, in addition to local factors, international and transnational factors contribute to water scarcity and attendant displacement in Southern Iraq. Second, the stakeholders – whether displaced populations, local government officials, federal policy makers, non-governmental organizations or international development organizations – focus on particular factors of water scarcity rather than addressing the causes holistically. In general, researchers and policy-makers underestimate or neglect water-related causes of displacement, not only in Iraq but globally. Even when addressed, emphasis is placed on local and national causes, …
