Assessing Hazard Vulnerability, Habitat Conservation, And Restoration For The Enhancement Ofmainland China’S Coastal Resilience, Muhammad Sajjad, Yangfan Li, Zhenghong Tang, Ling Cao, Xiaoping Liu
Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Worldwide, humans are facing high risks from natural hazards, especially in coastal regions with high population densities. Rising sea levels due to global warming are making coastal communities’ infrastructure vulnerable to natural disasters. The present study aims to provide a coupling approach of vulnerability and resilience through restoration and conservation of lost or degraded coastal natural habitats to reclamation under different climate change scenarios. The integrated valuation of ecosystems and tradeoffs model is used to assess the current and future vulnerability of coastal communities. The model employed is based on seven different biogeophysical variables to calculate a natural hazard index …

Volumetric Histological Characterization Of Optic Nerve Degeneration Using Modified Clear, Unobstructed Brain Imaging Cocktails And Computational Analysis (Mcubic), April Myers
Theses & ETDs
Tissue clearing technologies such as CUBIC (clear, unobstructed brain imaging cocktails and computational analysis) have the potential to greatly improve the accuracy with which the three-dimensional structure of biological tissues can be depicted. In the present study, a modified CUBIC protocol (mCUBIC) was applied to full-length fixed optic nerves (ON) of mice having undergone repeated mild traumatic brain injury (rmTBI) or a sham treatment (rsham). Direct fluorescent staining and immunohistochemistry was used to assess inflammatory and degenerative activity in the tissue by confocal microscopy. It was demonstrated that mCUBIC tissue retained quantifiable microstructural and morphological characteristics, was amenable to immunostaining, …
Impact Of Urbanization On Salinity Of Sarasota Bay Tidal Creeks, Claudia Vila
Impact Of Urbanization On Salinity Of Sarasota Bay Tidal Creeks, Claudia Vila
Theses & ETDs
Urbanization of watersheds causes more runoff to be discharged into surrounding estuaries. Some studies have connected increased discharge to decreased salinity in the estuaries. Salinity is a very important characteristic of these ecosystems, because it can influence biotic distribution. The Sarasota Bay watershed is highly urbanized and stormwater runoff is an established consequence of development. In this study, I looked at the impact of urbanization on salinity in Sarasota Bay, Florida. To detect variation through space and through time, I used spatial data that indicates percent imperviousness, salinity data collected at the mouths of each tidal creek, and time series …
Neonicotinoids: A Comparative Pesticide Policy Analysis Between The European Union And The United States, Tara Olson
Neonicotinoids: A Comparative Pesticide Policy Analysis Between The European Union And The United States, Tara Olson
Theses & ETDs
Neonicotinoids are an insecticide group, introduced in the 1980s, as a more effective method to combat insect pests. Within the past decade, unexpected side-effects of neonicotinoids have been discovered. The most prominent species that has shown negative side effects is the European honey bee, Apis mellifera. By targeting the nervous system, chronic, sub-lethal exposure to neonicotinoids causes behavioral changes and neurological damage, leading to eventual mortality in this species. The United States and the European Union are both affected by the loss of this globally essential pollinator. However, they have taken diverging approaches to manage the risk to this pollinator …

Audible Sound Treatment Of Chlorella Vulgaris Beijerinck (1890) Has No Effect On Growth Rate, Nathan Burnaman
Theses & ETDs
Microalgae, a group of single celled or simple multicellular organisms responsible for a significant portion of the world’s primary productivity, have the potential to be utilized for sustainable and potentially remediative production of fuel, food, and medicine. Recent experiments have shown that treating microalgae with sound can enhance growth and lipid production. Chlorella vulgaris, a microalga of interest in multiple industries, was cultured with continuous single frequency sound stimulation at 2200 Hz to observe changes in growth rates. Sound-treated alga cultures showed no significant difference in growth compared to control cultures. The literature on microalgal applications, as well as sound …
Modeling Ecological And Economic Effects Of Sea Level Rise On Wetlands In Sarasota County, Brandon Stevens
Modeling Ecological And Economic Effects Of Sea Level Rise On Wetlands In Sarasota County, Brandon Stevens
Theses & ETDs
Climate change has become one of the most prominent environmental issues in the last couple decades. There are numerous threats associated with climate change, including sea level rise, that must be addressed. Coastal ecosystems, such as wetlands, are at a high risk of loss from sea level rise, which may result in a loss in ecosystem services. The purpose of this study is to model some potential ecological and economic risks associated with wetlands loss in Sarasota County. Using GIS various sea level rise projections were used to identify wetlands that may be permanently inundated by 2050 and 2100. Data …

Wolbachia Detection In The Tawny-Edged Skipper (Polites Themistocles), Gabriella Elmir
Theses & ETDs
In this study, I screened a Tawny-edged Skipper (Polites themistocles) population of 26 individuals collected from northeastern South Dakota for Wolbachia. Wolbachia is an endosymbiotic bacteria that negatively affects host reproduction. PCR products for Wolbachia 16S and arthropod 28S were prepared and gel electrophoresis was used to detect Wolbachia infection in the population. This study found that 96% of the Tawnyedged Skipper population presented with Wolbachia. This supports the literature that Wolbachia is prevalent in insect species. I then selected five P. themistocles (Poth) individuals from the population and performed sequence analysis using an established multilocus sequence typing (MLST) protocol …
The War Isn’T Over: The Decolonial Praxis Of Laying Bare Environmental Violence In The #Nodapl Movement, Sadé Holmes
The War Isn’T Over: The Decolonial Praxis Of Laying Bare Environmental Violence In The #Nodapl Movement, Sadé Holmes
Theses & ETDs
Modern/colonial states and corporate interests perpetually engage in industrial practices that cause environmental violence ( NYSHN and WEA 2014 ), and th is is a continuation of the logics of modernity/coloniality that developed at the onset of settler colonialism in the Americas (Mignolo 2000; Quijano 1991). Decolonial art plays an integral role in the formation of responses to modernity/coloniality (Maldonado-Torres 2002) and environmental violence, which can be clearly seen within the #NODAPL movement (Martineau and Ritskes 2014). This thesis engages in a qualitative content analysis of creative writings of contemporary Indigenous women artists in a #NODAPL-inspired issue of the Apogee …

Power Is Sexy; Climate Change Is Not: A Look Into How Green Energies Can Mitigate Climate Change While Allowing Growth, Daviana King
Theses & ETDs
The thesis research investigates finding out how first climate change works and influences the globe, how that influences human activities and economies, and then how best markets can respond to climate change with focus on green energy. Research shows that (1) green technology in much of its production of energy has been in the small scale compared to fossil fuels but have grown to become effective sources of energy, (2) government support by subsidy, education, regulation, or guidance is necessary to getting the energy to be implemented and cost-effective, (3) many programs have risen in the US and globally and …
The Stability Of Theories From Categoricity To Their Spectrum, Alexander Johnson
The Stability Of Theories From Categoricity To Their Spectrum, Alexander Johnson
Theses & ETDs
This thesis is an expository work on major results in stability theory, a subfield of mathematical logic. We begin by proving Morley's Categoricity Theorem, which states that a complete countable theory has one model in some uncountable power if and only if it has one model in every uncountable power. A necessary condition for this uncountable categoricity to hold is stability in some infinite power l, which states that for every set of size less than l there are fewer than l types thereover. We then develop a rich toolbox including transcendence rank, indiscernible sequences, and forking with the goal …
A Social-Ecological Sustainability Analysis Of Sarasota Food Forests, Kaylynn Elizabeth Low
A Social-Ecological Sustainability Analysis Of Sarasota Food Forests, Kaylynn Elizabeth Low
Theses & ETDs
This thesis draws upon previous research in ecological sustainability and social sustainability to implement a framework that incorporates both aspects when determining the long-term viability of a green space; specifically food forests. Principles of civic ecology and agroecology were drawn upon to develop this framework. Ecological sustainability was quantified using data collected from inventorying the foundational species of local food forests, which for this research was fruiting trees. For the purpose of this research, the term “tree” was broadened to include woody, fruiting plants. The trees were measured in terms of their health, productivity, and abundance within the established boundaries …
Soil Carbon Sequestration Potential For Two Species Of South Florida Lawn Trees, Zach Zildjian
Soil Carbon Sequestration Potential For Two Species Of South Florida Lawn Trees, Zach Zildjian
Theses & ETDs
Soil carbon could be considered one of the most important resources that no one really talks about. Not only is this huge pool of carbon directly related to the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere, but it is also vital for agricultural productivity as well as soil health and function in general. The flux of carbon in and out of the soil has always been large, but recently human land use changes have caused more carbon to be released from the soil than is replaced. Planting trees is seen as one of the ways to mitigate this issue because of …

Urban Infrastructure And Environmental Interaction In Late Medieval And Tudor Period England, Adilyne Mckinlay
Theses & ETDs
The motivation for this research is to investigate the historical development of the nature-culture divide, an anthropological concept that identifies tension between the ideas of nature and culture and seeks to understand where on the scale between autonomy and interaction the two operate. This study analyzes the divide in late medieval and Tudor period England (1250-1600) through the lens of urban infrastructure in order to add to literature concerned with human-environmental interaction and thinking. Using documents from lay culture, such as ordinances, building contracts, financial accounts, and wills, as evidence, this study demonstrates that Englishmen during this period were clearly …

The Coastal Monitor
As I sat there in the Members Lounge at the Explorers Club; the world center for exploration, getting ready for our first Spring Saturday Science for Students @the EC lecture, I was putting together some notes on the accomplishments of our science students and CERCOM over the last few months since our last newsletter. Our visit to the Galapagos, a spectacular academic experience for our Molloy College students was at the top of my list! This was certainly not an epiphany but as I accumulated the items on this list, I was impressed not only with what we have conducted …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
We prepared novel unsymmetrical A$_{3}$B-type zinc and cobalt phthalocyanines bearing monocarboxylic acid groups on peripheral positions using statistical condensation method, especially designed to anchor on the TiO$_{2}$ semiconductor surface. The novel complexes were anchored on TiO$_{2}$ semiconductor to prepare effective dye sensitized photoactive composites as heterogeneous catalysts. The results indicated that modified TiO$_{2}$ nanocrystals possessed only the anatase phase and MPc-TiO$_{2}$ photocatalysts with loading amount of dye ca. 8.27 $\mu $mol/g TiO$_{2}$ exhibit strong visible light absorption. Photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) under illumination with visible light ($\lambda >$ 400 nm) was tested with the composites prepared. The degradation profile …
