Phantom Midge Mandibles In Lake Sediments As Bioindicators Of Historic Fish Absence In Minnesota’S Shallow Lakes, Holly Kundel, Isabelle Natrop
Phantom Midge Mandibles In Lake Sediments As Bioindicators Of Historic Fish Absence In Minnesota’S Shallow Lakes, Holly Kundel, Isabelle Natrop
All Zyzzogeton Presentations
Research Question: Is Chaoborus americanus a useful bioindicator of contemporary and historical fish absence in Minnesota’s shallow lakes? The phantom midge Chaoborus americanus (Diptera: Chaoboridae) is restricted to fishless habitats due to their vulnerability to fish predation (Von Ende, 1979, Schilling et al. 2009). Their chitinous mandibles are preserved in pond sediments, making this species an excellent bioindicator of historical fish absence in water bodies with unknown fish colonization history (Lamontagne and Schindler, 1994; Schilling et al. 2008). Our research is part of a larger project using paleolimnological techniques to understand historical regime shifts (from clear to turbid states) in …

The emphasis is on traditional non-Western conservation practices and their lessons for the modern-day resource manager. ENVS 117 is a core requirement for majors. Students interested in other cultures and world regions, and in particular international development, will find this course not only interesting, but useful.
A Close Look At The Role Of Regulatory Fit In Consumers’ Responses To Unethical Firms, Kwansik Mun, Ilgi Shin
A Close Look At The Role Of Regulatory Fit In Consumers’ Responses To Unethical Firms, Kwansik Mun, Ilgi Shin
International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference
Our knowledge is not enough to clearly explain how consumers respond to unethical firms, thereby forming attitudes toward unethical firms’ brand and buying their products. In this sense, we conduct a one-way experimental design to test regulatory focus theory when it comes to attitudes toward unethical firms’ brand and the purchase intention. Our findings reveal that promotion-oriented participants were more negative toward Mitsubishi, which violates achievement (e.g. fuel efficiency), than prevention-oriented participants. More importantly, promotion-oriented people were less likely to buy Mitsubishi automobiles than prevention-oriented people. In contrast, prevention-oriented consumers are negative toward Volkswagen which violates protection (e.g. carbon dioxide …

Gender diversity leads to better science; however, a number of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, including many geoscience subdisciplines, show a persistent gender gap. PROmoting Geo- science Research, Education, and SuccesS (PROGRESS) is a theory-driven role modeling and mentoring program aimed at supporting undergraduate women interested in geoscience-related degree and career pathways. This study is unique because it is being conducted in a long-term applied setting, rather than as a laboratory exercise. We compare female STEM majors in PROGRESS to a matched control group (N = 380) using a longitudinal prospec- tive multisite quasi-experimental design. College women in …

Investigating The Effects Of Legume Mulching On Carbon And Nitrogen Fluxes Of Small Scale Agriculture, Emily Neel
Investigating The Effects Of Legume Mulching On Carbon And Nitrogen Fluxes Of Small Scale Agriculture, Emily Neel
Honors Thesis Collection
Fertilizers provide nitrogen to agricultural crops, which is often the nutrient limiting plant growth. However, synthetic fertilizers are often not preferred or possible sources of soil nutrients due to economic and ecological reasons. Agroecological practices have historically incorporated legumes and mulching into agroecosystems to improve productivity. This research investigated the effects of legume mulching on small scale vegetable crop productivity. The experiment was conducted in the Wellesley College Edible Ecosystem Garden in 24 replicate barrel collars. In each barrel, I planted two spinach (Spinacia oleracea, variety ‘Tyee’) and two lettuce (Lactuca sativa, variety ‘Romaine’) plants. In half of the barrels, …

Background: Lowland areas in tropical East and Southeast Asia have a long history of conversion from forestland to agricultural land, with many remaining forests being chronically degraded by wood cutting, livestock grazing, and burning. Wetland-breeding amphibians that have evolved in lowland forests in the region have adjusted to changes in habitat composition caused by humans’ activities, and populations continue to persist. However, we have little understanding of the impacts of forest disturbance on these species beyond assessments of abundance and distribution, and species considered to be common and widespread have been largely neglected.
Methods: We examined body condition …

United States Navy: Publications
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) occupies approximately 10.1 million ha of land within the U.S. spanning most ecosystems contained therein. To date, no comprehensive agency-wide inventory of amphibian and reptile species has been compiled. We developed an amphibian and reptile species inventory for 415 DoD installations/sites and evaluated species diversity. The amphibian and reptile species confirmed present on DoD sites represent 66% of the total native species documented in the continental U.S. Snakes are the most widespread group found on DoD lands. Of the military services, Army sites have the greatest number of confirmed species, federally listed, state-listed, and …
Comparing Created And Natural Depressional Wetlands Through Trophic Analysis Of Macroinvertebrates, Shante N. Eisele
Comparing Created And Natural Depressional Wetlands Through Trophic Analysis Of Macroinvertebrates, Shante N. Eisele
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Macroinvertebrates are important contributors to wetland ecosystems due to their role in decomposition, nutrient cycling, and as a food resource for other organisms. Several studies have analyzed the macroinvertebrate communities in created wetlands, but few have evaluated them in the context of trophic structure in both created and natural wetlands. The objective of this study is to better understand benthic macroinvertebrate community composition and trophic structure in created and natural wetlands. My central hypotheses were that macroinvertebrate communities in created wetlands would have (1) differing composition and (2) less complex trophic structure with shorter food-chain length compared to natural wetlands. …

Indigenous Water Justice, Barbara Cosens
Indigenous Water Justice, Barbara Cosens
Articles
Indigenous Peoples are struggling for water justice across the globe. These struggles stem from centuries-long, ongoing colonial legacies and hold profound significance for Indigenous Peoples’ socioeconomic development, cultural identity, and political autonomy and external relations within nation-states. Ultimately, Indigenous Peoples’ right to self- determination is implicated. Growing out of a symposium hosted by the University of Colorado Law School and the Native American Rights Fund in June 2016, this Article expounds the concept of “indigenous water justice” and advocates for its realization in three major trans- boundary river basins: the Colorado (U.S./Mexico), Columbia (Canada/U.S.), and Murray-Darling (Australia). The Article begins …

Research On Cognitive Domain In Geoscience Learning: Quantitative Reasoning, Problem Solving, And Use Of Models, Kim A. Kastens, Ashlee Dere, Deana Pennington, Vic Ricchezza
Community Framework for Geoscience Education Research
Models (from simple mental models to complex computational models) are used by geoscientists to conceptualize and better understand the Earth system and to make predictions. Earth processes affect the human condition and result in hazards and complex issues that require both expert and citizenry decision-making about mitigation and adaptation. In addition, a wide range of Earth materials (e.g., mineral, rock, water) are valued resources that need sustainable management. All of these challenges require recognition of the problem (problem-finding), and the development and application of problem-solving skills. In addition, Earth system understanding and problem-solving benefit strongly from quantitative reasoning. Quantitative reasoning, …
Modular Structure In Fish Co-Occurrence Networks: A Comparison Across Spatial Scales And Grouping Methodologies, Daniel Mcgarvey Dr., Joseph Veech
Modular Structure In Fish Co-Occurrence Networks: A Comparison Across Spatial Scales And Grouping Methodologies, Daniel Mcgarvey Dr., Joseph Veech
Environmental Studies Publications
Network modules are used for diverse purposes, ranging from delineation of biogeographical provinces to the study of biotic interactions. We assess spatial scaling effects on modular structure, using a multi-step process to compare fish co-occurrence networks at three nested scales. We first detect modules with simulated annealing and use spatial clustering tests (interspecific distances among species’ range centroids) to determine if modules consist of species with broadly overlapping ranges; strong spatial clustering may reflect environmental filtering, while absence of spatial clustering may reflect positive interspecific relationships (commensalism or mutualism). We then use non-hierarchical, multivariate cluster analysis as an alternative method …

Global Climate Change I-Ii, Kendall Barrett Sooter, Dione Rossiter, Costanza Rampini
Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies
Many different scientific observations and measurements indicate that Earth is experiencing global-scale changes in climate, i.e., in the long-term distributions of temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, and extreme weather events. Scientific consensus considers most these changes to be caused or accelerated by human activities. The economic, ecological, social, and cultural challenges caused by global climate change will affect everyone on the planet, and are very likely to have disproportionate impacts on developing nations. In this course, we will study global climate change from an interdisciplinary perspective, incorporating natural and social science approaches to understanding processes and effects. We will study the …
