Pace International Law Review
This Article sprung from a desire to discover why—despite scientific uncertainty and the oft-cited precautionary principle in international law—genetically modified organisms are still allowed to spread via international trade and natural ecological cycles. While exploring this topic, it did not take long to come across the environmental justice impacts of genetically modified crops, and their particularly disparate impact upon indigenous peoples across the globe. Not only are GMOs threatening biodiversity and our planet, but also the very existence and cultural foundations of many indigenous groups.
This Article seeks to answer the following questions: What are the international agreements that can …

Carrying Messages Of "Peace" To The World: Landscape, Discourses, And Practices Of Peace In Hiroshima, Yuichi Yokoyama
Carrying Messages Of "Peace" To The World: Landscape, Discourses, And Practices Of Peace In Hiroshima, Yuichi Yokoyama
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is my exploration of what the landscape of peace, onto which past relevant actors' discourses and practices of peace and my interlocutors' present practices of peace are inscribed, represents and silences, and how my interlocutors, who relate their activities to the concept peace, make sense of the concept peace. In the literature in the field of anthropology of peace, peace has been what is defined by the anthropologists, not by their interlocutors. In other words, the anthropologists' definitions of peace have silenced their interlocutors' understandings of peace. This whole thesis was written as a critique of how these …

Strategic Planning To Advance Equity On Campus: A Case Study At Portland State University, Marisa Zapata, Stephen L. Percy, Sona K. Andrews
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Propelled by many factors, including a newly appointed Board of Trustees responsible for governance of our university, resource shortages, and enrollment swings, Portland State University embarked on a strategic planning effort in 2014 with the intent of reunifying a divided campus and creating a bold vision for moving forward in the next five years. While committed from the start to goals of diversity and inclusion, the planning process itself generated greater awareness of and commitment to equity—a bolder vision of empowerment that creates a responsibility to understand and mitigate negative, but often unintended consequences of, campus decisions and action—particularly as …
Toward Distributive Justice In Offshore Natural Resources Development: Iceland And Norway In The Jan Mayen, Anita L. Parlow
Toward Distributive Justice In Offshore Natural Resources Development: Iceland And Norway In The Jan Mayen, Anita L. Parlow
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
As pressures of globalization and advances in technology accelerate, more and more remote, coastal, and small communities are left financially stranded and disempowered. Many communities located at the historic periphery of global markets and trade routes are, often paradoxically, marginalized from the benefits of globalized trade, even while their more accessible natural resources have moved far closer to the center of global markets. The powerful political institutions of nation states combined with growing transnational businesses are driving a combination of boosts in national economies, explosions in technology, and fewer international restrictions on capital. This three-pronged dynamic is reshaping the structure …

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications
Objective
The goal of the present study was to use a methodology that accurately and reliably describes the availability, price and quality of healthy foods at both the store and community levels using the Nutrition Environment Measures Survey in Stores (NEMS-S), to propose a spatial methodology for integrating these store and community data into measures for defining objective food access.
Setting
Two hundred and sixty-five retail food stores in and within 2 miles (3·2 km) of Flint, Michigan, USA, were mapped using ArcGIS mapping software.
Design
A survey based on the validated NEMS-S was conducted at each retail food store. …

Shifting The Framework Of Canadian Water Governance Through Indigenous Research Methods: Acknowledging The Past With An Eye On The Future, Rachel Arsenault, Sibyl Diver, Deborah Mcgregor, Aaron Witham, Carrie Bourassa
Articles & Book Chapters
First Nations communities in Canada are disproportionately affected by poor water quality. As one example, many communities have been living under boil water advisories for decades, but government interventions to date have had limited impact. This paper examines the importance of using Indigenous research methodologies to address current water issues affecting First Nations. The work is part of larger project applying decolonizing methodologies to Indigenous water governance. Because Indigenous epistemologies are a central component of Indigenous research methods, our analysis begins with presenting a theoretical framework for understanding Indigenous water relations. We then consider three cases of innovative Indigenous research …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
Photovoice was used as a participatory research method to document perceived local environmental hazards, pollution sources, and potential impact on health among community members to address environmental health disparities. A convenience sample of 16 adults in Orangeburg, South Carolina participated in Photovoice. Photos depicted positive and negative implications of the environment across seven themes: recreation and leisure; food access; hazards and pollution; health, human, and social services; economic issues; beautification; and accommodation and accessibility. Positive and negative photos demonstrated a high level of interest among community members in considering how the environment influences health and health disparities.

Evaluating The Potential Of Ubiquitous Flexible Energy Loads To Provide Grid-Scale Balancing In Resource Constrained Environments: A Case Study In Nicaragua, Diego Ponce De Leon Barido
Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports
Future growth in urbanization will mainly occur in cities of the rising south. UN Habitat reports that in the past decade, the urban population in emerging economies grew on average 1.2 million people per week. By 2050, it is expected that seven out of ten people will be living in cities. An accompanying technology to urbanization, the use of cellphones and smartphones has seen unprecedented growth in recent decades. Currently there are more active mobile connections (7.8 billion SIM connections and 4.8 billion unique mobile subscribers) than people in the world (7.4 billion), with penetration rates being large even in …
Youth Participatory Action Research And Diet Decolonization To Improve Student Learning And Community Health: A Literature Review, Lyle S. Dandridge Jr.
Youth Participatory Action Research And Diet Decolonization To Improve Student Learning And Community Health: A Literature Review, Lyle S. Dandridge Jr.
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study reviews the current literature related to culturally relevant nutrition education and its applicability to student learning within a secondary school setting. Specifically, this study examines how a youth participatory action research (YPAR) framework can be used to introduce students to the Diet Decolonization concept. In tandem, these ideals seek to improve student nutrition through evidence-based instruction, while also remaining sensitive to students’ diverse backgrounds. A tentative YPAR research design is offered, as well as recommendations for researchers to avoid bias and promote reflective thought prior to embarking on this type of research.

E-Co-Affectivity Beyond The Anthropocene: Rethinking The Role Of Soil To Imagine A New 'Us', Marjolein Oele
E-Co-Affectivity Beyond The Anthropocene: Rethinking The Role Of Soil To Imagine A New 'Us', Marjolein Oele
Philosophy
Following Isabelle Stengers’ call that the anthropocene should make us feel and think differently, this paper focuses on the human task to shift its affective response. Since Stengers calls for a new “us” that seeks to participate in an entanglement, I propose to explore the material and ontogenetic functions of soil, and specifically soil pores, in reimagining a new form of e-co-affectivity. A new e-co-affective response would emphasize the usually hidden fluidity and diachronic time of pores, and, in doing so, cultivate an epistemic and aesthetic sensitivity, deceleration, and percolation.
