Pedagogical Contraband: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Student Engagement During Simulations, Stephen Austin Henderson Jan 2018

Pedagogical Contraband: A Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Student Engagement During Simulations, Stephen Austin Henderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of students who are taught using simulations in survey history courses. Although simulations have been studied in a variety of domains, few studies have examined the use of simulations to teach history. Further, most of the previous research on simulations has been quantitative in nature, and one goal of the proposed study is to go into greater depth than typically allowed for by quantitative methodologies and examine the lived experiences of students in a college-level history class who are participating in simulations. Results suggest that the five phases of …

Calibration Of Mine Ventilation Network Models Using The Non-Linear Optimization Algorithm, Guang Xu, Jinxin Huang, Baisheng Nie, Duncan Chalmers, Zhuoming Yang Jan 2018

Calibration Of Mine Ventilation Network Models Using The Non-Linear Optimization Algorithm, Guang Xu, Jinxin Huang, Baisheng Nie, Duncan Chalmers, Zhuoming Yang

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effective ventilation planning is vital to underground mining. To ensure stable operation of the ventilation system and to avoid airflow disorder, mine ventilation network (MVN) models have been widely used in simulating and optimizing the mine ventilation system. However, one of the challenges for MVN model simulation is that the simulated airflow distribution results do not match the measured data. To solve this problem, a simple and effective calibration method is proposed based on the non-linear optimization algorithm. The calibrated model not only makes simulated airflow distribution results in accordance with the on-site measured data, but also controls the errors …

The Moral Motivations Of Negative Attitudes Toward Transgender People, Hailey Annette Hatch Jan 2018

The Moral Motivations Of Negative Attitudes Toward Transgender People, Hailey Annette Hatch

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Transgender individuals are at higher risk for experiencing sexual assault and police brutality than the general population (National Coalition for Anti-Violence Programs, 2013). These brutal acts are likely the result of negative attitudes. Negative attitudes toward transgender people are related to individual differences in psychological authoritarianism, political conservatism, religiosity, and low personal contact with sexual minorities (Norton & Herek, 2013). This study explored underlying moral mechanisms that may also contribute to negative attitudes toward transgender people – specifically mechanisms involving generalized disgust (i.e., purity) and harm. Moral foundations theory (Haidt & Graham, 2007) suggests that disgust is the underlying mechanism …

Femtosecond Laser-Matter Interactions In Ternary Zinc Phosphate Glasses, J. Hernandez-Rueda, N. W. Troy, P. Freudenberger, Richard K. Brow, D. M. Krol

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the interaction of ultrashort laser pulses with ternary zinc phosphate glasses. We explore the viability of ten different glass compositions with different levels of alumina to inscribe optical waveguides via the fs-laser direct writing technique, finding that only samples with [O]/[P] ratios of 3.25 are suitable candidates. We also test a zinc magnesium phosphate glass to fabricate waveguide Bragg gratings in order to generate filters and mirrors with specific spectral properties. Confocal Raman spectroscopy inspection shows that laser-damaged material exhibits a relative intensity decrease and a subtle blue-shift on the 1209 cm-1 Raman peak, which implies a relative …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ce-Al-O coatings with thicknesses between ca. 136 nm and 1094 nm were deposited on Al 2024-T3 alloy substrates using magnetron co-sputtering of independent Al and CeO2 targets. The Ce-Al-O coatings with thicknesses from ca. 136 nm to 490 nm were compact, dense, and did not have distinct X-ray diffraction peaks. The ca. 1094 nm thick Ce-Al-O coating exhibited a columnar-textured outer layer ∼700 nm thick and a dense, ∼390 nm thick inner layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the Ce-Al-O coatings contained Ce (III) species, and that the Al/Ce atomic ratio decreased with increasing coating thickness. Electrochemical corrosion data …

Mark's Gospel Compared With Virgil's Aeneid, Floyd Schneider

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This dissertation will present the Gospel of Mark in light of the Aeneid, Virgil’s epic poem published by Augustus immediately after Virgil’s death in 19 B.C. The Aeneid’s genre, literary style, grammar, symbolic hermeneutics, and lasting influence has been thoroughly researched and dissected in literature courses throughout the centuries. It has been translated into numerous languages and widely distributed in terms of geography and nationalities. Virgil wrote the Aeneid to proclaim the deity of Augustus. “Hic Caesar et omnis Juli progenies magnum caeli ventura sub axem. Hic vir, his est, tibi quem promitti saepius audis, Augustus Caesar, Divi genus, aurea …

Application Of Improved Fast Dynamic Allan Variance For The Characterization Of Mems Gyroscope On Uav, Qian Zhang, Xueyun Wang, Shiqian Wang, Chaoying Pei

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are core components in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The precision of MEMS sensors is very important when the GPS signal is invalid. However, the precision and performance of MEMS sensors will be degraded by the changing of environment. Therefore, estimation and identification of the various noise terms existing in MEMS sensors are deemed to be necessary. The Allan variance is a common and standard method to analyze MEMS sensors, but it cannot be used to analyze the dynamic characteristics. The dynamic Allan variance (DAVAR) is a sliding version of the Allan variance. It is a practical tool …

Including Topographical Effects In Slant-Range Modeling, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demarsy Jan 2018

Including Topographical Effects In Slant-Range Modeling, Kari C. Ward, Kyle J. Demarsy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Spacecraft descent-to-landing navigation often includes the use of a slant-range measurement, the distance from the spacecraft to a surface along the off-nadir pointing direction of the sensor. Modeling a slant range sensor requires a reference surface, approximations of which include spherical and ellipsoidal surfaces, spherical harmonic models, and topographical maps based on prior reconnaissance data. For the spherical and ellipsoidal reference surfaces, a closed-form solution of the slant-range measurement exists. However, these approaches are inaccurate with respect to the true surface. This paper develops a method to implement digital elevation maps of a given surface to create a topography-based model …

Square-Root Consider Filters With Hyperbolic Householder Reflections, James S. Mccabe, Kyle J. De Mars Jan 2018

Square-Root Consider Filters With Hyperbolic Householder Reflections, James S. Mccabe, Kyle J. De Mars

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Maintaining positive definiteness of a filter's error covariance estimate is of paramount importance to any stable and reliable estimation scheme. Two widely used methods for protecting a filter from loss of positive-definiteness are that of consider filtering and square-root filtering. Despite their widespread use in estimation applications, a filtering methodology that combines the two techniques has yet to be presented in a unified, streamlined architecture. This paper develops a new approach to square-root filtering using hyperbolic Householder reflections. A specialization of the method is considered to permit computationally efficient applications, and a numerical example pertaining to a ballistic reentry is …

Decoupled, Linear, And Energy Stable Finite Element Method For The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes-Darcy Phase Field Model, Yali Gao, Xiaoming He, Liquan Mei, Xiaofeng Yang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation for a phase field model of the coupled two-phase free flow and two-phase porous media flow. This model consists of Cahn—Hilliard—Navier—Stokes equations in the free flow region and Cahn—Hilliard—Darcy equations in the porous media region that are coupled by seven interface conditions. The coupled system is decoupled based on the interface conditions and the solution values on the interface from the previous time step. A fully discretized scheme with finite elements for the spatial discretization is developed to solve the decoupled system. In order to deal with the difficulties arising from the …

The Letter And The Spirit: A Unified Theory Of Originalism, Randy E. Barnett, Evan Bernick Jan 2018

The Letter And The Spirit: A Unified Theory Of Originalism, Randy E. Barnett, Evan Bernick

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The concept of constitutional construction is of central importance to originalist theory but is both underdeveloped and controversial among originalists. Some object that its apparent open-endedness undermines the constraining virtues of originalism and exposes citizens to arbitrary judicial power. In this Article, we respond to this challenge by presenting an originalist theory of constitutional construction that can guide and constrain judicial activity within the “construction zone.” When combined with an originalist theory of constitutional interpretation, our approach yields a unified theory of originalism.

Our theory of constitutional construction draws upon a familiar common-law concept long used in contract and fiduciary …

The Law Of Deception: A Research Agenda, Gregory Klass Jan 2018

The Law Of Deception: A Research Agenda, Gregory Klass

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The law of deception is the body of laws that address acts and omissions that wrongfully cause others to hold false beliefs. So defined, the law of deception cuts across traditional doctrinal boundaries. It encompasses the torts of deceit and defamation, false advertising laws, labeling requirements, securities fraud and disclosure regulations, criminal fraud, perjury statutes, and a host of other generic and more targeted laws. This essay suggests that the law of deception constitutes a coherent body of law, and identifies four salient questions about it.

The questions are these: First, within the law of deception one finds several different …

Correlation Between The Spirit Bike Maximal Power Output And Other Lower Extremity Power Output Tests, Tyler Adams, Joseph Brown, Gunnar Mendiola, Ryan Sullivan, Cody Williams Jan 2018

Correlation Between The Spirit Bike Maximal Power Output And Other Lower Extremity Power Output Tests, Tyler Adams, Joseph Brown, Gunnar Mendiola, Ryan Sullivan, Cody Williams

Clinical Sciences: Graduate Physical Therapy Capstone Projects (2008-2021)

The assessment of a patient’s lower extremity function is important for physical therapists to make clinical judgements about the subject’s mobility and physical capabilities. For physical therapists to accurately assess a patient’s lower extremity function, clinicians must utilize the most appropriate tests, evaluation techniques, and/or tools. It is not clear that single leg hop tests will provide the most accurate assessment of lower extremity function for patients with hip, knee, ankle, and or foot biomechanical dysfunctions, as in some severe cases, these tests may even be contraindicated.

Contextualized Writing: Promoting Audience-Centered Writing Through Scenario Based Learning, Paullett Golden Jan 2018

Contextualized Writing: Promoting Audience-Centered Writing Through Scenario Based Learning, Paullett Golden

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Scenario-based learning is an approach for student-centered learning used in the medical and legal fields, but is little used in liberal arts. In this study, I examine students’ understanding and application of audience-centered writing techniques after a semester of formal scenario-based essays and problem-based activities. Comparing the grades of two experimental groups and one control group showed consistently higher class averages in the two experimental groups exposed to the problem-based scenarios, averages one to two letter grades higher than that of the control group. The findings also revealed increased critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. The summative assessment was …

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study employs the limit analysis method to evaluate the seismic stability of anisotropic and nonhomogeneous slopes stabilized with anti-slide piles. The pseudo-static approach is used to simplify the earthquake load. The yield seismic acceleration factor is obtained from the optimization procedure and the results are verified with the published data. Then, the seismically unstable slope is reinforced with anti-slide piles, and the seismic stability of the reinforced slope is explored. The results show that the anisotropy and Non homogeneity of soils have significant effects on the stabilizing force required from the anti-slide piles and the optimal location of the …

An Analysis Of Common Drill Stem Vibration Models, Mohammed F. Al Dushaishi, Runar Nygaard, Daniel S. Stutts

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Excessive drill stem (DS) vibration while rotary drilling of oil and gas wells causes damages to drill bits and bottom hole assemblies (BHAs). In an attempt to mitigate DS vibrations, theoretical modeling of DS dynamics is used to predict severe vibration conditions. To construct the model, decisions have to be made on which beam theory to be used, how to implement forces acting on the DS, and the geometry of the DS. The objective of this paper is to emphasize the effect of these assumptions on DS vibration behavior under different, yet realistic, drilling conditions. The nonlinear equations of motion …

Testing And Evaluation Of Shale Stability For Zubair Shale Formation, Ahmed K. Abbas, Ralph E. Flori, Ahmed Al-Anssari, Mortadha Alsaba Jan 2018

Testing And Evaluation Of Shale Stability For Zubair Shale Formation, Ahmed K. Abbas, Ralph E. Flori, Ahmed Al-Anssari, Mortadha Alsaba

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Zubair Formation consists of approximately 55% shale, which causes almost 70% of wellbore problems due to incompatibilities of drilling fluids and shale formations. The most common and effective solution to shale instability is through the design and selection of drilling fluids. Understanding the interaction between drilling fluids and shale has been a challenge due to the complexity of both physical and chemical variations in shale formations. This paper presents some of the important laboratory and well-site testing techniques that are often used by mud engineers for characterizing and remediating drilling fluids and shale interaction. Well-preserved shale samples were analyzed to …

Law, Religion, And Racial Justice: A Comment On Derrick Bell's Last Article, Jean Stefancic

Articles

This essay examines Derrick Bells reflections on religion and law and his exploration of how blind faith in either can incorporate racism I offer two examples from Alabamas legal history to show how this can happen I then posit that his rejection of a fundamentalist approach to both religion and law led to his adoption of racial realism as a way to live a life of meaning and worth
