Confidence In Academic Testing: The Effect Of Induced Checking And Anxiety On University Students' Emotional Responses To, And Performance In, Academic Challenge, Elijah Bruner
All Master's Theses
Academic tests such as the American College Testing (ACT), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP) have been used to assess academic aptitude. Research suggests that both test anxiety and test emotions (positive and negative) influence academic performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of test anxiety and uncertainty (i.e., re-checking items) on performance and test emotions. It was hypothesized that induced checking and participant anxiety would negatively predict performance and positive testing emotions, and positively predict negative testing emotions. It was also hypothesized that induced checking and anxiety would interact, with …
Attitudes Toward Anonymous Public Nudes, Marianna Wendt
Attitudes Toward Anonymous Public Nudes, Marianna Wendt
All Master's Theses
While technologically-mediated expressions of sexuality have been previously studied, there is very little research regarding anonymous public nudes (APNs). APNs are nude photographs which are taken or cropped so as not to include the face or other identifying characteristics, and posted on the Internet. This differs from sexting in that the photographs are meant to be seen by an audience of strangers online, rather than one or a few trusted individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of APNs. Sixty-seven male and 160 female students over the age of 18 were recruited from Central Washington University to …
Assessing The Use Of Tsunami Simulations As A Tool To Predict Source Magnitudes And Locations Of Paleoearthquakes In Chile, Rebeca Isabel Becerra
Assessing The Use Of Tsunami Simulations As A Tool To Predict Source Magnitudes And Locations Of Paleoearthquakes In Chile, Rebeca Isabel Becerra
All Master's Theses
A long-term goal of paleotsunami studies is the ability to predict paleoearthquake parameters based on tsunami deposits found on land. Chile provides an exemplary location for testing methods of making these predictions because the historical record includes 41 major earthquakes as far back as 1562 AD, and there are many known paleotsunami deposits throughout the region. Using these records as a comparison tool, I evaluated simulated tsunami wave heights and inundation extent with the tsunami model GeoClaw for nine hypothetical tsunamigenic large earthquakes (Mw 8.6, 8.8, and 9.0) in south-central Chile with epicenters at -35.1º, -38.8º, and -42.9º. As …
Coloration, Camouflage, And Sexual Dichromatism In The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus Oreganus), Jefferson Brooks
Coloration, Camouflage, And Sexual Dichromatism In The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus Oreganus), Jefferson Brooks
All Master's Theses
In some viperid snakes, natural selection has shaped coloration and patterning to match local habitats, and for males to show greater warning coloration than females due to a less sedentary lifestyle. The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) is likely the most abundant ambush predator in eastern Washington, yet little is known about its color variation, how color patterns interact with their habitats, and if male and female snakes show differences in patterning or color. To explore how snake color might interact with the colors of their environment, I used standardized digital photography to record both snake and substrate coloration. …
Gender Differences In Task Switching: An Event-Related Potential Study, Briana M. Bratcher
Gender Differences In Task Switching: An Event-Related Potential Study, Briana M. Bratcher
All Master's Theses
The current study examined the possible differences in several brainwaves and behavioral reaction times between males and females in relation to task switching. Previous research has shown gender differences in various aspects of cognition including task switching. Task switching refers to the ability to cognitively switch from processing one task to processing another, completely different task. The current study utilized a color-shape target switching paradigm and event-related potentials to analyze possible gender differences. The results of the study showed no gender differences in relation to reaction times, P2 and P3b brainwave latencies or amplitudes. However, the study found a difference …
Stream Water And Soil Water Chemistry After The Table Mountain Wildfire, Washington, Usa, Vincent J. Roccanova
Stream Water And Soil Water Chemistry After The Table Mountain Wildfire, Washington, Usa, Vincent J. Roccanova
All Master's Theses
Analyses of major and trace elements, major ions, and nutrient concentrations were made to investigate how stream water and soil water chemistry changed over 16 months following the Table Mountain wildfire. Sites with different burn severity were also compared. The fire occurred in 2012 in Kittitas County, north of Ellensburg, Washington. Samples were collected at severely burned, moderately burned, and unburned field sites from within and adjacent to the wildfire perimeter. Total nitrogen concentrations increased in the second year after the fire in both the severely and moderately burned sites. In contrast, total phosphorus was variable at all three sites …
Evaluation Of Anthelmintic Properties And Toxicity Of Pure Compounds Isolated From Dalea Spp (Plantae, Fabaceae), Victoria Lh Mcpherson
Evaluation Of Anthelmintic Properties And Toxicity Of Pure Compounds Isolated From Dalea Spp (Plantae, Fabaceae), Victoria Lh Mcpherson
All Master's Theses
Infecting upwards of a billion people worldwide, hookworm is one of the most prevalent parasitic infections affecting the world today. Those infected experience hookworm disease, characterized by severe anemia, which can lead to malnutrition, low birth weights, and physical and mental impairments. Currently, the benzimidazoles albendazole and mebendazole are used as the primary treatment; however, resistance to these drugs is emerging. Due to this resistance, finding new anthelmintic compounds active against hookworm is a priority. Previously, a pure compound isolated from Dalea ornata was identified as having strong anthelmintic activity when used against the hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum. This project …
Good Law For "Bad Hombres", Matthew Neely
Good Law For "Bad Hombres", Matthew Neely
Emory International Law Review
The rise of drug cartels in Mexico has attracted international attention. In particular, United States President Donald J. Trump has publicly discussed that he may send the U.S. military into Mexico to fight these cartels. If the U.S. military does enter Mexico, it is important to consider the constraints placed on these actors by the law of armed conflict and human rights law. This Article concludes that the violence in Mexico attributable to drug cartels cannot legally be considered an armed conflict. Instead, if the U.S. sends in military forces, these forces would be bound by human rights law. Based …

Economy Versus Care: China's Economic Ambitions And A Conundrum In Alternative Care, Nicholas E. Basil
Emory International Law Review
This Comment serves as a theoretical analysis of how China's transition to a market economy that necessitates the state taking a lesser economic role, along with China's continued integration with the international community and the community's impositions, are continuing to shape the future of its orphan and foster care population today. Moreover, it specifically analyzes how the most recent foster care regulations promulgated by the Ministry of Civil Affairs'the Measures for the Administration of Family Foster Care'fit into the unique history of orphan and foster care and the modern Chinese nuclear family. The Comment ultimately proposes that China, as a …
Reconciling Quasi-States With The Crime Of Aggression Under The Icc Statute, Sascha Dominik Bachmann, Yasser Abdelkader
Reconciling Quasi-States With The Crime Of Aggression Under The Icc Statute, Sascha Dominik Bachmann, Yasser Abdelkader
Emory International Law Review
On June 11, 2010, a binding definition of the crime of aggression was finally adopted at the Review Conference of the Rome Statute in Kampala, Uganda. The Rome Statute¿s definition of the crime of aggression reflecting on existing practice leads to the assumption that State-like entities that lack universal recognition will not be covered by the Court¿s jurisdiction of the crime of aggression. Lack of clear definition of ¿State¿ in the Rome Statute gives the first indication of the implied exclusion of State-like entities from the scope of the crime of aggression. However, the most recent interpretation of the term …

Faculty Law Review Articles
This Article is about what malice should mean under bankruptcy law. Malice is used in other areas of law as a sorting function—to identify wrongful acts that are especially grievous. For example, criminal law uses malice to separate murder from manslaughter. The Bankruptcy Code uses malice to perform a similar sorting function. Bankruptcy law discharges or forgives certain kinds of debts. It separates debts that society is willing to forgive from debts that are not forgivable. One way it accomplishes this sorting function is through Section 523(a)(6) of the Bankruptcy Code, which excepts from discharge debts for “willful and malicious …

The Distribution Of Centric Diatoms In Different Rivercatchments In The Anatolian Peninsula, Turkey, Cüneyd Nadi̇r Solak, Maxim Kulikovski, Tihammer Keve Kiss, Muhammet Aydin Kaleli̇, John Patrick Kociolek, Eva Ács
Turkish Journal of Botany
The diatoms are one of the most important groups of organisms for biomonitoring studies. In Turkey, most previous applications of diatoms to water quality monitoring have focused on the pennate diatoms, with almost no attention given to the centric forms. The paper presents the centric diatoms in some river catchments in Central Anatolia (Konya closed catchment and Kızılırmak) and Western Anatolia (Marmara, Sakarya, Susurluk, Akarçay, Küçük Menderes, and Meriç-Ergene in the Marmara and Aegean regions). The survey of these catchments is based on samples collected between 2009 and 2013 from 33 different locations, including some springs from Türkmen Mountain and …
Teaching The Book Of Mormon At The University Of Vermont: An Interview With Elizabeth Fenton, Joseph Spencer
Teaching The Book Of Mormon At The University Of Vermont: An Interview With Elizabeth Fenton, Joseph Spencer
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Elizabeth Fenton's first book-Religious Liberties: Anti-Catholicism and Liberal Democracy in Nineteenth-Century U.S. Literature and Culture-appeared in 2011. The next year, she began presenting work on the Book of Mormon, first in a conference paper at the annual convention of C19: The Society of Nineteenth-Century Americanists, and then in an invited lecture at the University of Maryland titled "Why Americanists Should Read The Book of Mormon." In 2013, she published her conference presentation from the previous year in J19: The Journal of Nineteenth-Century Americanists. The next year, Fenton organized a panel at C19 focused on the Book of Mormon, which drew …

The Book Of Mormon And Its Redaction Of The King James New Testament: A Further Evaluation Of The Interaction Between The New Testament And The Book Of Mormon, Nicholas J. Frederick
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The text of the King James Bible plays a significant role in the composition of the Book of Mormon. While there have been studies that have attempted to identify what biblical passages are present in the Book of Mormon, not nearly enough effort has been spent exploring how those passages are used throughout the text. For example, one can readily identify the textual parallels between Alma 5:48 and John 1: 14, due to the sharing of phrases such as "full of grace and truth'' and "only-begotten son:' This type of research is useful in and of itself. But simply identifying …
Messianic Time And The Book Of Mormon, Alana Smith
Messianic Time And The Book Of Mormon, Alana Smith
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Walter Benjamin famously claimed that "only a redeemed mankind is granted the fullness of its past-which is to say, only for a redeemed mankind has its past become citable in all its moments. Each moment it has lived becomes a citation a l'ordre du jour. And that day is Judgment Day." The Book of Mormon (1830) posits a pathway to redemption for believers and organizes all time around the coming of Christ. I aim to use Benjamin's model of messianic time to interpret the complicated formal and narrative temporalities in The Book of Mormon and to offer a possible answer …
Land As Regenerative Space In The Book Of Mormon, Shawna Norton
Land As Regenerative Space In The Book Of Mormon, Shawna Norton
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The Book of Mormon presents a tale of the plight and flight of a family from biblical Jerusalem, stitched together through a variety of narrators. As the title page claims, this book contains the record of the Nephite people, descendants of Lehi, who was commanded by God to leave Jerusalem in order to save his family from destruction. From that command, the text becomes one of movement and escape, so that the Nephite race can avoid destruction. As this story is one about avoiding annihilation, it necessarily becomes one of reproduction: How do the Nephites reproduce the people of God …

"There Cannot Be Any More Bible!": Nineteenth-Century Visual Art And The Production Of Memory In The Book Of Mormon, Jessica Slayton
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
The Book of Mormon, told by a variety of narrators over a period of hundreds of years, is deeply concerned with remembrance and the written production of memory. As each narrator grows old and finishes his time recording the events of his people, he hands down the plates to a son or other trusted, younger male companion to continue writing the history and preserving the memories of their people. In this paper, I'd like to argue that nineteenth-century visual art becomes a continuation of the concern for and production of memory so present in The Book of Mormon itself. The …
"Learned" And "Unlearned" Reading In The Book Of Mormon, Sean Leahy
"Learned" And "Unlearned" Reading In The Book Of Mormon, Sean Leahy
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In recalling his "First Vision" in 1820, Joseph Smith writes of the "anxieties" over the "contests of [the] parties of religionists" that drove him to seek solace in scripture and "attempt to pray vocally" for the first time in his young life. Smith describes turning to the Epistle of James, a reading that precipitated his calling out for an answer to his "anxieties." The reply to Smith's "vocal" prayer initiated a course of events that ultimately led to the publication of The Book of Mormon in March 1830. Since then, the story of the plates whose translation constitutes the text …

"Skin" Or "Scales" Of Blackness? Semitic Context As Interpretive Aid For 2 Nephi 4:35 (Los 5:21), Adam Oliver Stokes
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Few verses in the Book of Mormon are as problematic and controversial as 2 Nephi 4:35 (LDS 5:21). Critics of the Book of Mormon have routinely pointed to this verse and its reference to Lamanites receiving a "skin of blackness" as evidence of racism and racist theology in Mormonism's sacred scriptures. The verse has also failed to escape ridicule in pop-cultural depictions of Mormonism, as seen most recently in the hit Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon. The verse and its interpretation are of perennial interest to readers of the Book of Mormon, believing or not, since the racial stance …
Building The Temple Of Nephi: Early Mormon Perceptions Of Cumorah And The New Jerusalem, Don Bradley
Building The Temple Of Nephi: Early Mormon Perceptions Of Cumorah And The New Jerusalem, Don Bradley
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
As a new faith's purported "Gold Bible" began rolling off the presses at the E. B. Grandin print shop, the public was curious to know the nature of that faith. Protestant sects proliferated wildly during the Second Great Awakening, particularly in the fertile soil of upstate New York's "Burned-over District:' And restorationists, like the Christian primitivist Disciples of Christ, who aimed to restore the New Testament Church, were a familiar breed among them. Such sects provided the best model for what the public might expect Palmyra's new faith to become, but actual information was still hard to come by.
The Theological Value Of The King James Language In The Book Of Mormon, Jan J. Martin
The Theological Value Of The King James Language In The Book Of Mormon, Jan J. Martin
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
In 1831, Alexander Campbell (1788-1866), the founder of the Disciples of Christ Church and leader in the early nineteenth-century religious reformation known as the Restoration, published a short pamphlet entitled Delusions: An Analysis of the Book of Mormon: With an Examination of Its Internal and External Evidences, and a Refutation of Its Pretences to Divine Authority. In the pamphlet, Campbell argued that the Book of Mormon was a linguistic hodgepodge, "patched up and cemented with 'And it came to pass' - 'I sayeth unto you'-'Ye saith unto him'-and all the King James' haths, dids and doths-in the lowest imitation of …
Becoming A People Of The Books: Toward An Understanding Of Early Mormon Converts And The New Word Of The Lord, Janiece Johnson
Becoming A People Of The Books: Toward An Understanding Of Early Mormon Converts And The New Word Of The Lord, Janiece Johnson
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Leather-bound copies of the first edition of the 586-page Book of Mormon were published and sold beginning March 26, 1830. Before there was a prophet, there was a translator-legally the "author and proprietor" of the Book. The title page told of the plates written "by the spirit of Prophecy and Revelation'' from which the Book originated. Before the publication was complete, Joseph Smith had encouraged Oliver Cowdery that "a great call for our books" had already commenced. The Book emerged before there was any church to join. The rest would come later; initially individuals decided how they would respond to …

The element phosphorus (P) is central to ecosystem growth and is proposed to be a limiting nutrient for life. The Archean ocean may have been strongly phosphorus-limited due to the selective binding of phosphate to iron oxyhydroxide. Here we report a new route to solubilizing phosphorus in the ancient oceans: reduction of phosphate to phosphite by iron(II) at low (°C) diagenetic temperatures. Reduction of phosphate to phosphite was likely widespread in the Archean, as the reaction occurs rapidly and is demonstrated from thermochemical modeling, experimental analogs, and detection of phosphite in early Archean rocks. We further demonstrate that the higher …

A Study Of Long-Lived Asset Impairment Under U.S. Gaap And Ifrs Within The U.S. Institutional Environment, Philip K. Hong, Daniel Gyung Paik, Joyce Van Der Laan Smith
Accounting Faculty Publications
This paper explores whether differences in accounting standards influence reporting behavior within the U.S. institutional environment where both IFRS and U.S. GAAP are used for reporting purposes. We focus on the accounting for impairment of long-lived assets, an area where significant differences exist between U.S. GAAP and IFRS. We identify all U.S.-listed firms who have recognized long-lived asset impairment losses during the 2004–2012 period. From these firms, we identify firms following IFRS, then develop a matched sample of U.S. GAAP firms, using a propensity score matching procedure. We examine the relation between impairment loss and unexpectedly high or low earnings …
