Thoughts And Prayers, Chloe Kardasopoulos Dec 2018

Thoughts And Prayers, Chloe Kardasopoulos

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Examining the symbolic Gun against its tangible counterpart illuminates abstract attachments of power and superiority this nation associates with the weapon. These elements loaded in the Gun transform the weapon into an object representative of American identity. Analyzing ideological commitments within the Gun guides a critical response to examine disproportionately increasing national gun violence against stagnant federal gun control. The ongoing gun debate must be analyzed in its entirety, beginning at its source - the Second Amendment. Scholars such as Gary Wills dissect the Second Amendment to extract its contextualized intent from modern writers’ manipulated interpretations. It is not the …

Yellow Fever: Asian Representation In Western Pornography, Chye Shoong Chin

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

This research project seeks to explore the various implications porn films make on Asians Orientalism. Generally, Asians in pornography are composed of multiple negative archetypes, all based on the underlining purpose of servitude. Characters are portrayed through stereotypes including the use of colonial language to misrepresent Asian men and women in both straight and gay porn videos. Referred to as Orientalism, this ideology exploits Asian characters to privilege the White, male viewer. My research project investigates the following question: How are Asians represented in gay and straight pornographic films and pornographic scenes?

I will be applying scholarly arguments to various …

Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu Dec 2018

Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu

Theses

Extensive studies have been conducted on both musical scores and audio tracks of western classical music with the finality of learning and detecting the key in which a particular piece of music was played. Both the Bayesian Approach and modern unsupervised learning via latent Dirichlet allocation have been used for such learning tasks. In this research work, we propose and develop the novel idea of treating musical sheets as literary documents in the traditional text analytics parlance, to fully benefit from the vast amount of research already existing in statistical text mining and topic modeling.

We specifically introduce the idea …

Investigating The Impact Of Oxidative Stress On Tetrahymena Thermophila Sirtuin,Thd 18, Emmanuel Dubuisson

Publications and Research

Sirtuins are a family of enzymes that fulfill various important biological functions. Investigators have looked for the implication of Sirtuin genes in cell signaling mechanisms, in the formation and silencing of heterochromatin, in the regulation of ion channels, and in the modulation of the cellular redox reactions[2]. Different model organisms have been previously used to conduct these studies; among them, there are yeasts, nematodes, and fruit flies. Each one has made some valuable contribution into the vast body of knowledge related to this field.

However, gaps in the understanding of Sirtuins functions still remain to be filled. In this optic, …

The accumulation of water runoff during rain storms is a major problem in New York City’s combination water systems, forcing water treatment plants to release untreated excess water. To avoid overfilling of the sewer system by this grey water, pocket parks and gardens will be used to absorb the excess rainfall. We will be harnessing nature’s resources with current technologies such as: solar panels combined with rain catching canopies, to beautify the environment, educate the public about sustainability, stimulate growth to local businesses through increased foot traffic and bringing social awareness on environmental issues.

The canopies are designed to collect …

Computational Techniques For Scattering Amplitudes, Juliano A. Everett Dec 2018

Computational Techniques For Scattering Amplitudes, Juliano A. Everett

Publications and Research

Scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory can be described as the probability of a scattering process to happen within a high energy particle interaction, as well as a bridge between experimental measurements and the prediction of the theory.

In this research project, we explore the Standard Model of Particle Theory, it’s representation in terms of Feynman diagrams and the algebraic formulas associated with each combination.

Using the FeynArts program as a tool for generating Feynman diagrams, we evaluate the expressions of a set of physical processes, and explain why these techniques become necessary to achieve this goal.

Lexical Retrieval Inhibition From Semantically Related Retrieval Primes, Abhilasha Ashok Kumar Dec 2018

Lexical Retrieval Inhibition From Semantically Related Retrieval Primes, Abhilasha Ashok Kumar

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenological experience of lexical retrieval involves conscious and active attempts to retrieve semantically related information, but the direct influence of this retrieval process on subsequent retrieval is presently unknown. We investigated the influence of passively viewing or actively retrieving different types of information at the critical moment preceding lexical retrieval through a novel priming paradigm. Participants attempted to retrieve target words (e.g., FOLIAGE) from their low-frequency definitions or descriptions (e.g., the leafy parts of a plant or tree, collectively). Across five experiments, target retrieval was preceded by the brief presentation of a prime word (Experiment 1), progressive demasking of …

Synthesis And Integration Of Oligoviologens Into Hydrogel Actuators, Kevin Liles Dec 2018

Synthesis And Integration Of Oligoviologens Into Hydrogel Actuators, Kevin Liles

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the development of soft-material artificial molecular muscles has inspired scientists to pursue novel stimuli-responsive systems capable of undergoing change in the physical and mechanical properties of a material in response to external stimuli. This interest has been driven primarily by advances, or the desire for advances, in fields such as soft robotics, microfluidics, and bio-compatible drug-delivery systems. In this work, redox-responsive viologens and their ability to form stable radical-cation complexes were evaluated as a method of actuation in stimuli-responsive materials, specifically hydrogels. First, a brief overview of hydrogel actuators is covered, with some examples given of the broad …

The Interplay Between Early Childhood Education And Mental Health: How Students In An In-Service Early Childhood Teacher Education Program Experience Children With Mental Health And Behavioral Challenges In The Classroom, Katie Statman-Weil

Dissertations and Theses

All early childhood educators who work with children between birth and six years of age are likely to encounter young children who experience behavioral and mental health challenges throughout their careers. Research demonstrates that educators can play a vital role in children's mental health and behavioral development. However, often early childhood educators do not believe they have the knowledge or tools to accurately identify and successfully handle the unique challenges that arise when working with children with behavioral and mental health issues.

Using an Anti-Oppressive Framework, this research study explores, through a qualitative case study design, how students in an …

Green Supply Chain Management: A Perspective On Best Practices In Gscm Design, Leroy Paddock, Natasha Rao

Arkansas Law Review

Greening of company supply chains has become almost de rigueur for large, publicly facing companies. One indication of this situation is the fact that 35 of the Fortune 50 companies and at least 58 of the Fortune 100 companies discuss at least some aspects of their green supply chain management (GSCM) activities on their public websites, primarily under the heading of “responsible sourcing.” These GSCM activities ] have the potential to contribute in very important ways to meeting societal sustainability goals, influencing suppliers that are beyond the reach of the national laws of consumer nations, and driving changes in environmental …

Excavations at the Smith-Maskell Site (28CA124) in the Spring of 2011 by URS Corporation revealed a number of early 19th-century features behind what was once 318 Cooper Street in Camden, New Jersey. These features produced significant quantities of Federal period tea and tablewares, including a number of Philadelphia Queensware vessels. During this period Camden was beginning its transition from a scattering of sparsely populated villages to a city of summer residences and country retreats for Philadelphia’s well-to-do middle class. The likely owners of the Philadelphia Queensware found at the Smith-Maskell Site were among this prosperous middle class, and thus the …

“Equal In Quality And Workmanship To The Best Made In Staffordshire”: Philadelphia Queensware Pottery In The Early 19th Century And How To Distinguish It From Yellow Ware, Kimberly M. Sebestyen

Northeast Historical Archaeology

World events preceding and including the War of 1812 led to American embargoes on imported British goods including popular Staffordshire earthenware ceramics, such as creamware. Philadelphia potters created domestic versions of these ceramics which have previously been misidentified. This will serve as a review of the characteristics of a Philadelphia-produced ceramic often identified as yellowware, but sold as Queensware by these potters. Review of pottery from several archaeological sites in and near Philadelphia provided a number of Queensware vessels for analysis. A comparison of these vessels provides a set of characteristics to aid in identification of additional examples of this …

This article examines the history of several manufacturers of American queensware in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and beyond. Our research reveals that efforts to produce queensware were more extensive and widespread than previously thought. This survey expanded as we discovered references to contemporary queensware potteries in other parts of the United States during the first two decades of the 19th century. In all, 14 queensware-manufacturing ventures are identified and described from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, what is now West Virginia, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Much of this research is drawn from period newspaper notices, advertisements, and surviving personal correspondence. The period …

They Responded, We Listened: Improving Stroke Education And Patient Satisfaction, Melissa Meighan

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

The annual decrease in stroke mortality rates in the United States has slowed, but in certain populations, such as Hispanics and in southern U.S. states, mortality rates are increasing. Stroke remains the number one cause of adult disability. A previous stroke is a risk factor for a second stroke. Prompt treatment is essential for positive outcomes. Patients need to present to the hospital no more than 4.5 hours from last known well for intravenous alteplase treatment and six to 24 hours from last known well for endovascular therapy. Based on the literature, the majority of patients are not presenting to …
