Rebellion And Change On The Road Poster, Natalie Rude Dec 2018

Rebellion And Change On The Road Poster, Natalie Rude

English Department: Traveling American Modernism Posters (ENG 366, Fall 2018)

This article talks about rebellion, which has always been a prominent piece of American history, but it has always been associated with world changing events. Rebellion is an action that is anything, regardless of size, that is out of the ordinary that results in personal change while on the road. Unfortunately, Rebellion on the road is gendered, meaning that while men can rebel and change wherever they wish, women can only rebel on the road, and all the personal changes women make disappear as soon as they leave the road. This is largely due to the social spaces constructed by …

Workflow Interruptions: Risk Factors And Outcomes In Nursing, Chandaniben Maniya

Honors Capstones

Introduction: Workflow interruptions in nursing are defined as the disruption of a nursing task. Workflow interruptions are a common stressor in nurses’ work, leading to deviations in their focus that can result in medication errors and missed nursing tasks. Thus, they can compromise patient safety, health outcomes, and satisfaction. Moreover, interruptions can cause stress, burnout, and reduce job satisfaction among nurses. It is important to recognize that there are solutions that would prepare nurses for reducing workflow interruptions and improving their work patterns. The purpose of this literature review was to identify the causes of interruptions, their effects on patients …

Social Media And Self-Esteem: The Relationship Between Social Media And Self-Esteem, Jody Don Barker

Student Theses and Dissertations

With social media being a prominent platform in the days of sharing information over the internet, it can affect one’s self-esteem if not careful. The current study examines the relationship of social media usage and self-esteem. From the 218 participants surveyed, results show that social media does have some influence on a person’s self-esteem. A person with a high self-esteem is more likely to use social media for finding entertaining content, promote products/services, and talk about their accomplishments, while a person with a low self-esteem will use it to not feel alone, but they do not post selfies. Writing To Heal: Viewing Teacher Identity Through The Lens Of Autoethnography, Erin Parke Dec 2018

Writing To Heal: Viewing Teacher Identity Through The Lens Of Autoethnography, Erin Parke

The Qualitative Report

This autoethnographic work explores my experience with illness (specifically anti-N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor encephalitis), recovery, and career change all in the span of a few months. Through reflexive interviews and a first-person narrative, I analyzed the shifting nature of my identity, specifically my teacher identity as I moved from struggling teacher, to patient, and back to teacher again. I also analyzed how the act of writing, and writing the narrative of this autoethnography, assisted in the healing process. My story shows that in moving from pre-illness to post-illness, I shifted from a strict, content-based teacher to a constructivist facilitator with …

Multi-Task Zipping Via Layer-Wise Neuron Sharing, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele Dec 2018

Multi-Task Zipping Via Layer-Wise Neuron Sharing, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Future mobile devices are anticipated to perceive, understand and react to the world on their own by running multiple correlated deep neural networks on-device. Yet the complexity of these neural networks needs to be trimmed down both within-model and cross-model to fit in mobile storage and memory. Previous studies squeeze the redundancy within a single model. In this work, we aim to reduce the redundancy across multiple models. We propose Multi-Task Zipping (MTZ), a framework to automatically merge correlated, pre-trained deep neural networks for cross-model compression. Central in MTZ is a layer-wise neuron sharing and incoming weight updating scheme that …

Performers As Teachers: A Case Study On How Two El Sistema-Inspired Teaching Artists' Performance Identities Manifested During Instruction, Alicia J. Monroe

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Kids’ Orchestra (KO) is an afterschool El Sistema-inspired program in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a Title I school district, which employs a high percentage of musicians who identify strongly as performers. During the 2017-2018 school year, 52 of 59 KO teaching artists were considered professional musicians with training in music performance, with no educational background and/or prior experience in music education.

The recent development of ESI programs across the United States has fostered claims of using music education as a way to bring social change to the community it works in. Research exploring the specific nature of the pedagogy …

A Literary Journey Back In Time, Hannah K. Heil Dec 2018

A Literary Journey Back In Time, Hannah K. Heil

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

Before I began writing, I reflected on the effect literature has had on my life. I brainstormed different experiences in which I found literature to be very influential. I talked with various people including my parents and past teachers to ensure the accuracy of the various childhood stories I decided to write about. When it came time to put the final draft together, I focused on my various experiences with literature and the grand effect it has had on my life. I also incorporated why I value being a literate person today as a university student.

Editor's note: For this …

Rhetorical Analysis: Never Give Up, John Milliken

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

For this English 100 assignment, we were asked to write a rhetorical analysis of a speech of our choice. I knew I wanted to pick one that would be interesting to me. Prior to writing this paper, I had heard about the speech once before when watching a sports documentary. I knew the speech had a strong message at its core, but I did not know why it was so respected and liked by its audience. While writing this paper I had three drafts;, the first two drafts were peer edited. The second and third were also edited and graded …

Claiming Your Life And Education, Kelly E. Corkery Dec 2018

Claiming Your Life And Education, Kelly E. Corkery

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

My essay is a rhetorical analysis of Adrienne Rich’s speech, “Claiming an Education." I chose Rich’s speech because a friend of mine told me that her introduction to college seminar at Penn State discussed the speech, and I found the speech to be very interesting. After choosing the speech, I completed two drafts, which were both edited in both a peer review and by my instructor, Professor Strain. After my first draft, I also had a writing conference with Professor Strain to refine my work more. After my second draft, I met with Professor Strain again to discuss submitting this …

The Road That Got Us Here, Kayla M. Rotz Dec 2018

The Road That Got Us Here, Kayla M. Rotz

English Department: Traveling American Modernism Posters (ENG 366, Fall 2018)

This article attempts to explain the romanticism of Native American culture existing in The United States and how it came to be. Through a chain of events this romanticism began. Forced Migration caused a social divide creating a separate social space for Native American people. Because of this negative social space we may see hegemony begin to take place. The American Government took Native children from their homes and forced them to assimilate into the general American population, thus creating a domino effect. In many cases children carry on a culture for other generations. However if these children are forced …

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney A. Rieb Dec 2018

The Impact Of Music On Language Acquisition, Courtney A. Rieb

Honors Capstones

More and more students in the classroom are English learners (ELs) (U.S. Department of Education, 2017). Despite the historically strong evidence that music is beneficial to the language acquisition process for ELs, there is very little music education occurring (Engh, 2013; Salcedo, 2010). The more teachers know about the benefits of implementing music in the classroom, it is hopeful that they will be more likely to include music in their curricula. The purpose of this literature review is to explore the positive impact of music on language acquisition and communicate the role that music can play in lowering the affective …

Kekuaokalani: An Historical Fiction Exploration Of The Hawaiian Iconoclasm, Alex Oldroyd Dec 2018

Kekuaokalani: An Historical Fiction Exploration Of The Hawaiian Iconoclasm, Alex Oldroyd

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis offers an exploration of the Hawaiian Iconoclasm of 1819 through the lens of an historical fiction novella. The thesis consists of two parts: a critical introduction outlining the theoretical background and writing process and the novella itself. 1819 was a year of incredible change on Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha, the Great Uniter and first monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, had recently died, thousands of the indigenous population were dying, and foreign powers were arriving with increasing frequency, bringing with them change that could not be undone. With the death of Kamehameha, Hawaiʻi’s rulers faced the impossible of task …
