Journey To Kentucky: A Look At Migration Patterns From The Middle East To American And Kentucky, Hannah R. Parker

Integrated Studies

The study of migration provides valuable insight to many different disciplines. The migration patterns of people from the Middle East to the United States began in the late 1800s and continues even today. Looking specifically at the case of people migrating from the Middle East to Kentucky provides a unique perspective in understanding the history of an ethnic group. Using migration theories such as migrant network theory, and forced migration theory, along with migration history to provide insight to a complex subject this paper brings a deeper comprehension to exactly what makes people choose to migrate to Kentucky from the …

The Art Of Listening: Listening Skill Development, Classical Music Appreciation, And Personal Response Through Visual Art In A Middle School Program, Christina Smiraglia, Gordon Divine Asaah, Hanako Sawada Lacerda

Research & Issues in Music Education

Although many programs aim to develop students’ listening skills and promote the appreciation of Western classical music, relatively few such programs incorporate visual art. This study examined the perceived effectiveness of the Edinburgh International Festival’s (EIF) Art of Listening program in reaching its stated goals to: develop skills for listening, encourage the enjoyment of listening to Western classical music, break down preconceptions held about Western classical music, cultivate a deeper relationship with the imagination through music and art, and encourage students’ personal responses to music. Focusing primarily on the first three goals, this study gathered data from 78 students from …

Career Challenges Faced By Professional Black Women In Sweden, Herta Boakye-Yiadom Dahl

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Academically and professionally qualified Black women who immigrated to Sweden from the United States and the continent of Africa encounter barriers that may hinder their career opportunities. The unstable labor market position of foreigners required efforts by the Swedish government to address the problem. Little is known about the unique and specific challenges that qualified Black immigrant women experience when integrating into the Swedish labor market with foreign qualifications and professional experience. Guided by Durkheim's social integration theory, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to evaluate the lived experiences of Black immigrant women as they integrated into the Swedish …

Medicalizing Blackness: Making Racial Difference In The Atlantic World, 1780-1840, Alexandra Cornelius

Civil War Book Review

Using compelling evidence collected from archives in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, South Carolina, and Philadelphia, Rana Hogarth argues persuasively that physicians working among enslaved societies in the Atlantic world during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries played a decisive role in the racialization of physiological and physical differences among humans.

Critical Race Ip, Deidre Keller

Journal Publications

In this Article, written on the heels of Race + IP 2017, a conference we co-organized with Amit Basole1 and Jessica Silbey,we propose and articulate a theoretical framework for an interdisciplinary movement that we call Critical Race Intellectual Property (Critical Race IP).Specifically, we argue that given trends toward maximalist intellectual property policy, it is now more important than ever to study the racial investments and implications of the laws of copyright, trademark, patent, right of publicity, trade secret, and unfair competition in a manner that draws upon Critical Race Theory (CRT). Situating our argument in a historical context, we articulate …

Japan’S Overseas Chinese Policies In Southern Vietnam During World War Ii, Siu Tsun Choi Jan 2018

Japan’S Overseas Chinese Policies In Southern Vietnam During World War Ii, Siu Tsun Choi

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

“Overseas Chinese is the mother of the Chinese revolution.” This quotation reflects the conventional perception that overseas Chinese is the chief enemy of Japan. However, this is in contrast with Vietnam’s overseas Chinese view; Japan considered them as a potential and crucial ally in Japan's Expansion in Southeast Asia. Chinese’s economic dominance in Vietnam, especially its monopoly in the rice industry and its traditional commercial network, provided them with an incredible political influence and bargaining power. This thesis aimed to rediscover the historical truth of overseas Chinese in Southern Vietnam during wartime by studying the transitions and policies made by …

Gold Griot: Jean-Michel Basquiat Telling (His) Story In Art, Lucinda Ross Jan 2018

Gold Griot: Jean-Michel Basquiat Telling (His) Story In Art, Lucinda Ross

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Emerging from an early association with street art during the 1980s, the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was largely regarded within the New York avant-garde, as ‘an exotic other,’ a token Black artist in the world of American modern art; a perception which forced him to examine and seek to define his sense of identity within art and within society. Drawing upon what he described as his ‘cultural memory,’ Basquiat deftly mixed together fragments of past and present, creating a unique style of painting, based upon his own experiences of contemporary American life blended with a remembering of an African past. This …

Connecting Continents: Archaeology And History In The Indian Ocean World, Krish Seetah Jan 2018

Connecting Continents: Archaeology And History In The Indian Ocean World, Krish Seetah

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In recent decades, the vast and culturally diverse Indian Ocean region has increasingly attracted the attention of anthropologists, historians, political scientists, sociologists, and other researchers. Largely missing from this growing body of scholarship, however, are significant contributions by archaeologists and consciously interdisciplinary approaches to studying the region’s past and present.

Connecting Continents addresses two important issues: how best to promote collaborative research on the Indian Ocean world, and how to shape the research agenda for a region that has only recently begun to attract serious interest from historical archaeologists. The archaeologists, historians, and other scholars who have contributed to this …

The Impact Of The 2014-2016 Ebola Epidemic On Sierra Leonean Immigrants In The United States, Daphne J. Cole

Open Access Dissertations

The 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic represented the largest outbreak in the history of the disease and it took a tremendous toll on the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone who were impacted by a disease that had never been seen in their part of the world. While the epidemic significantly impacted those three nations, reported cases also spread to African countries such as Mali, Nigeria, and Senegal, as well as countries in the western world, such as Spain and the U.S. prior to the West African epidemic. Ebola was perceived in the U.S. as a distant threat dramatized …
