Building Library-Based Support Structures For Open Science, Henrik Karlstrøm, Ingrid Heggland Dec 2018

Building Library-Based Support Structures For Open Science, Henrik Karlstrøm, Ingrid Heggland

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Research institutions meet increasing demands for transparency, accountability, added value and reuse of all aspects of scientific production, from documenting the research process to sharing underlying data to open access to publications. Going beyond admirable slogans about openness there is a clear need for support infrastructures relating to the actual practice of Open Science – describing metadata, archiving datasets and publications and disseminating increasingly interdisciplinary research results. Research libraries, having always been stewards of research institutions’ collective knowledge and offering a variety of research support services, are in a unique position to offer future support for Open Science based on …

What Do Demand-Driven E-Lending, E-Acquisition And E-Cataloguing Activities Really Cost: A Case Study In Tallinn University Of Technology Library, Kate-Riin Kont

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

According to C. A. Mandel: „We are all spending money, some of us know how much, fewer of us know what for“ (Mandel 1988, p. 220). For over a several decades, many academic libraries have been purchasing books requested by their patrons or customers. The ease and effectiveness of demand-driven acquisitions definitely helps to optimize acquisitions budget as well. Nowadays university libraries increasingly turn to e-books as an alternative to purchasing multiple copies. Academic libraries have for years been forced to purchase large packages of e-books that are of questionable financial value because so much of the content is not …

Engineering Graduates At Work: Reality Check For Information Literacy, Caroline Leiss, Pia Ludwig Dec 2018

Engineering Graduates At Work: Reality Check For Information Literacy, Caroline Leiss, Pia Ludwig

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Information Literacy (IL) in the Workplace is a relatively new and increasingly important area of research in library science. Many libraries offer IL programmes in order to help students find, ac-cess and use literature for their studies and final papers. But to what extent does instruction in IL help students in their future employment? In international library science, a number of publications already investigate concepts of em-ployability and their relation to information literacy. In Germany, the discussion is just beginning. There is little evidence that German libraries include information literacy for the workplace in their strategic programme development. The University …

On The Role Of Tasks In Virtual Game-Based Learning: The Example Of “Lost In Antarctica“, Simone Kibler, Linda Eckardt

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

There is evidence that tasks play an important role in the context of the development of virtual learning scenarios. This paper will focus on this fact and identify the relationship between tasks and their purpose in the context of “Lost in Antarctica”. This game-based blended-learning scenario contains a huge variety of tasks ensuring the acquisition of different skills within the broad range of information literacy (IL)-topics. In conclusion, general recommendations for the use of tasks in the conceptional process of e-learning environments should be given. "Lost in Antarctica” is a game-based blended-learning platform for about 150 students of Industrial Engineering …

Using Technology To Teach Students Information Literacy Skills: An Online Module For First-Year Students At The University Of Johannesburg (Uj), Elize Du Toit Dec 2018

Using Technology To Teach Students Information Literacy Skills: An Online Module For First-Year Students At The University Of Johannesburg (Uj), Elize Du Toit

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Being information literate is a basic requirement for 21st-century learning and assessment. As the shift in 21st-century education moves towards e-learning and the use of technology in education, libraries have to recognise that their role to provide ‘traditional’ support to teaching, learning and research needs to change to support web-based learning. This shift in education necessitates libraries to look at new ways to enhance students’ academic experience by incorporating web-based technology to train students in information literacy skills. The UJ library developed an online information literacy module to support students’ information literacy skills. A pilot study was conducted to analyse …

Developing A Digital Culture And Embedding Digital Agility Within A Library Workforce, Anne Horn, Eleanor Reynolds Dec 2018

Developing A Digital Culture And Embedding Digital Agility Within A Library Workforce, Anne Horn, Eleanor Reynolds

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

“Culture is the most significant self-reported barrier to digital effectiveness” (Goran, LaBerge & Srinivasan, 2017). Universities are looking to a “different kind of education for a much more uncertain world” (Havergal, 2017). University Libraries are preparing students to be effective citizens in these changing times by ensuring graduates are information and digitally literate. To continue to evolve and provide excellent library services it is essential that the library workforce embraces the challenges that the Fourth Industrial Revolution poses. Following the successful development and launch of an Information and Digital Literacy (IDL) framework for learning and teaching, The University of Sheffield …

Osteochondral Autologous Transplantation As A Treatment Of Osteochondral Defects Of The Talus, Sameh S. Alsafty

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background For many years, osteochondral defects of the talus has been known as a symptomatic lesion that causes pain, recurrent synovitis, altered joint mechanics, and obstruction from loose bodies. It is a probable precursor of ankle osteoarthritis. Arthroscopic procedures, such as debridement, retrograde drilling, and bone grafting have a great advantage in treating small defects. An open method can be considered for treatment of large osteochondral lesions and unstable osteochondral defect lesions. Objective To present the functional results after autologous osteochondral transplantation in 12 patients using open surgical technique by antromedial approach and antrolateral approach for the ankle according to …

Anti-Acetylcholine Receptor Antibodies As A Diagnostic Marker For Myasthenia Gravis, Aisha El-Shimy, Hala I. Mohamed, Iman Kamel, Magdy Khalaf, Youssof Abd El Motamad

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a common primary disorder of neuromuscular transmission, which is characterized by fluctuating weakness of a certain voluntary muscles, particularly those innervated by motor nuclei of the brain stem, that is, ocular and mastication muscles, and caused by antibodies binding to components in the neuromuscular junction. Most MG cases demonstrate elevated serum levels of acetylcholine receptor (ACh-R) antibodies, which cause partial or complete inhibition of receptor function and complement-mediated focal lysis of the postsynaptic membrane. ACh-R antibodies are detected in the serum of more than 80–90% patients with generalized MG, in ~50% with ocular myasthenia, and …

Effect Of Digital Wireless Technology On The Language Development Of Children With Cochlear Implants, Abir Omara, Azza Azzam, Azza Samy, Eman Ghorab, Iman El-Rouby, Soha Hamada

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Introduction Hearing is the principal sensory modality by which language and speech are acquired. For that reason, a child with hearing loss whose family chooses an auditory approach for learning language must have as much exposure to high-quality auditory stimulation as possible. Both hearing aids and cochlear implants (CI) are best in quiet and close places, but not so good at a distance, in noise or when sounds bounce around. Children with CI have significant difficulty in hearing conversational speech in the presence of background noise. They may have difficulty understanding soft speech signals due to distance and reverberation. Assistive …

Patients and methods The study included six patients with complex post-traumatic knee deformity. They had genu varus, recurvatum, and shortening; two female individuals and four male individuals, with an age range from 16 to 20 years comprised our study sample. The …

Negotiating Practicum Experiences In A Reading Specialist Preparation Program, Karen Rissling, Linda Kucan Dec 2018

Negotiating Practicum Experiences In A Reading Specialist Preparation Program, Karen Rissling, Linda Kucan

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In this cross-case study, we examined how two reading specialist candidates negotiated their yearlong practicum experiences in relation to university coursework and their previous teaching experience. Data sources included interviews, weekly teaching logs, and field observations. Findings reported in extended vignettes reveal how both interns were placed in positions that required them to negotiate instructional expectations at their internship sites and practices advocated in their coursework. In both cases, those two realities were often at odds when they were required to implement a program with scripted lessons and a required pacing guide. The findings raise important questions about the impact …

Concepts Of Online Text: Examining Online Literacy Skills Of Elementary Students, Jodi Pilgrim, Sheri Vasinda, Christie Bledsoe, Elda E. Martinez

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading online text presents unique challenges for elementary students as they develop and extend fundamental literacy skills to various media. Traditional assessments of concepts about print inspired the authors’ research, which applies a similar approach to address “screen handling” instead of book handling. The purpose of their ongoing research has been to develop an instrument to assess concepts related to online reading. The Concepts of Online Text (COT) assessment measures knowledge of online navigation and text features. Quantitative analysis of student performance data using the COT has the potential to provide developmental insight into elementary students’ proficiencies in conducting internet …

But Are They Actually Healthier? Challenging The Health/Wellness Divide Through The Ethnography Of Embodied Ecological Heritage, Kristina Baines

Publications and Research

A holistic definition of ‘health’ remains difficult to operationalize, despite decades of attempts by medical anthropologists and the World Health Organization to do so. Anthropologists routinely reject dichotomous notions – belief vs. knowledge, wellness vs. health, mental vs. physical, environment vs. self – yet demands for physiological evidence of ‘health’ persist. In this article, I ask what evidence would sufficiently demonstrate health, and explore the possibility of measures that move beyond the physiological. Using ethnographic data collected in indigenous Maya communities in Belize and in immigrant communities in New York City, I argue that ecological heritage practices can provide a …

Fundamental Limits On The Capacities Of Bipartite Quantum Interactions, Stefan Bäuml, Siddhartha Das, Mark M. Wilde Dec 2018

Fundamental Limits On The Capacities Of Bipartite Quantum Interactions, Stefan Bäuml, Siddhartha Das, Mark M. Wilde

Faculty Publications

Bipartite quantum interactions have applications in a number of different areas of quantum physics, reaching from fundamental areas such as quantum thermodynamics and the theory of quantum measurements to other applications such as quantum computers, quantum key distribution, and other information processing protocols. A particular aspect of the study of bipartite interactions is concerned with the entanglement that can be created from such interactions. In this Letter, we present our work on two basic building blocks of bipartite quantum protocols, namely, the generation of maximally entangled states and secret key via bipartite quantum interactions. In particular, we provide a nontrivial, …

Standing To Appeal At The Federal Circuit: Appellants, Appellees, And Intervenors, Matthew J. Dowd, Jonathan Stroud Dec 2018

Standing To Appeal At The Federal Circuit: Appellants, Appellees, And Intervenors, Matthew J. Dowd, Jonathan Stroud

Catholic University Law Review

The America Invents Act of 2011 created three administrative patent review regimes that have flooded the rechristened Patent Trial and Appeal Board with almost 7,000 new matters in just under five years. The flood of matters—primarily, inter partes reviews (IPRs)—has led to more than 1,000 appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for Federal Circuit from administrative proceedings, eclipsing any other forum of origin. With the flood of administrative appeals, questions of first instance on appellate standing have arisen, resulting in a handful of important panel decisions.

While the other regional Courts of Appeals have largely adopted legal tests, standards, …

Re-Evaluating The Demise Of The Average, Ordinary, Reasonable Person: Unintended Consequences In The Law Of Nuisance, George P. Smith & William P. Lane Dec 2018

Re-Evaluating The Demise Of The Average, Ordinary, Reasonable Person: Unintended Consequences In The Law Of Nuisance, George P. Smith & William P. Lane

Catholic University Law Review

This Article advocates for a wider pleading use of the tort of nuisance—this, because of the unresolved complexities in the doctrine of causation which continue to plague an effective use of negligence. The confusing awkwardness or, perhaps, the actual demise, of the notion of an average, ordinary, reasonable person so essential to improving negligent wrongdoing has caused aggravation over the years and, indeed, given rise to a state of torbidity.

The judiciary can more easily resolve this evidentiary quagmire by shifting its judicial attention and analysis to the tort of nuisance. With alarming social indicators and statistical projections, confirming the …

The Essence Test: Picking Up A Supreme Court Fumble, Thomas Gentry Dec 2018

The Essence Test: Picking Up A Supreme Court Fumble, Thomas Gentry

Catholic University Law Review

Labor arbitration is the primary mean by which employers and employees resolve disputes. The shortcomings of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on labor arbitration have intensified as more employees opt for arbitration. These shortcomings are no more apparent than with the National Football League and its players.

This Comment uses NFL player Adrian Peterson and his player-discipline arbitration process as an example of the gaps in the Supreme Court’s case law. The Supreme Court announced the Essence Test in 1960 with the seminal Steelworker Trilogy Cases. Since 1960, lower courts have been unable to consistently apply the test, leading to a …

La Promesa Cumplida [The Promise Fulfilled]: How The U.S. Constitution Has Enabled Colonialism, Dean Delasalas

Catholic University Law Review

In 2016, as a debt-ridden Puerto Rico tried and failed to protect its assets from rapacious creditors, Congress enacted the Puerto Rico Oversight and Economic Management Act (PROMESA). PROMESA created the Financial Oversight and Management Board, a group of unelected officials charged with helping Puerto Rico restructure its debt and “achieve fiscal responsibility.” To the surprise of many, the Oversight Board was empowered to invalidate Puerto Rican laws, strong-arm the Puerto Rican government into accepting draconian spending cuts in education, healthcare, and pensions and sue officials who refused to comply.

Sadly, the extent of power given to the Oversight Board …

Is A Delayed Result A Just Result? The Use Of Laches As An Equitable Defense To Remedial Back Pay Under The Eeoc's Sovereignty, Ruth Ann Mueller Dec 2018

Is A Delayed Result A Just Result? The Use Of Laches As An Equitable Defense To Remedial Back Pay Under The Eeoc's Sovereignty, Ruth Ann Mueller

Catholic University Law Review

The equitable defense of laches generally cannot be used against the sovereign. This broad proposition, adopted from English Courts of Equity, cements itself in United States federal case law. It is a longstanding principle that the federal government protects the public good and must be exempt from the defenses that could be brought up in a private suit. Administrative agencies bear a similar role, and exemption, when litigating as the United States on behalf of the public.

However, courts do not affirmatively restrict the use of laches against administrative agencies who may be acting on behalf of a private litigant. …
