P300 Event-Related Potentials To A Phoneme Discrimination Task Requiring A Motor Response, Kaitlyn Chelsea Turner Dec 2018

P300 Event-Related Potentials To A Phoneme Discrimination Task Requiring A Motor Response, Kaitlyn Chelsea Turner

Theses and Dissertations

Speech perception typically takes place within the auditory cortex as evidenced by data collected using quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). The purpose of this study was to determine if motor responses influence speech perception. We examined P300 event-related potentials during oddball stimulus recognition tasks that either required or did not require a motor response. Based on a review of the literature, it was hypothesized that similar areas of the brain would be activated in both the motor response task and the same task without a motor response immediately following the button-push condition. Two syllables, /ba/ and /ga/, were presented to 20 native …

Fullerene (C60) has generated much scientific interest since its discovery due to its novel optical, electronic, and physical properties. Fullerene has been shown to be an excellent electron acceptor and as a result is the acceptor of choice in organic photovoltaics. Porphyrins are excellent electron-donors due to their stability, low ionization potential, and excellent light absorption properties. As a result, fullerene-porphyrin dyads form unique donor-acceptor systems that can be useful for a variety of photoactive applications. In this research, computational studies have been performed on different varieties of C60-Porphyrin dyads and the relationship between molecular topology and the properties of …

Becoming Your Brand, Blake Kuzma Dec 2018

Becoming Your Brand, Blake Kuzma

Honors Theses

As many young professionals now, starting a career is a very important and scary time. We are taught more and more how important it is that you present yourself in a way that is marketable to employers not only in person, but online as well. As a survey done by Jobvite in 2015, “75% of HR departments are required to search job applicants online” and also that “75% of HR professionals have rejected candidates based on information they have found online.” (Jobvite, 2015).

But beyond the advice we receive from our parents and mentors, there is very little that is …

Blood hemoglobin level (Hgb) measurement has a vital role in the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of numerous diseases. We describe the use of smartphone video imaging and an artificial neural network (ANN) system to estimate Hgb levels non-invasively. We recorded 10 second-300 frame fingertip videos using a smartphone in 75 adults. Red, green, and blue pixel intensities were estimated for each of 100 area blocks in each frame and the patterns across the 300 frames were described. ANN was then used to develop a model using the extracted video features to predict hemoglobin levels. In our study sample, with patients …

Global Connectivity And Function Of Descending Spinal Input Revealed By 3d Microscopy And Retrograde Transduction, Zimei Wang, Brian Maunze, Yunfang Wang, Pantelis Tsoulfas, Murray G. Blackmore Dec 2018

Global Connectivity And Function Of Descending Spinal Input Revealed By 3d Microscopy And Retrograde Transduction, Zimei Wang, Brian Maunze, Yunfang Wang, Pantelis Tsoulfas, Murray G. Blackmore

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The brain communicates with the spinal cord through numerous axon tracts that arise from discrete nuclei, transmit distinct functions, and often collateralize to facilitate the coordination of descending commands. This complexity presents a major challenge to interpreting functional outcomes from therapies that target supraspinal connectivity after injury or disease, while the wide distribution of supraspinal nuclei complicates the delivery of therapeutics. Here we harness retrograde viral vectors to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate that injection of AAV2-Retro to the cervical spinal cord of adult female mice results in highly efficient transduction of supraspinal populations throughout the brainstem, midbrain, and cortex. …

The study included 19 participants ranging in age from 18-28 and used a multilevel model design. Participants completed a Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) pre and post listening to nostalgia evoking music. Results revealed a decrease in negative affect pre to post-test, also showing a difference between …

The Wailing Spirits: How Banshees Reflect An Ever-Changing View Of Women In Society, Brianna Leonard Dec 2018

The Wailing Spirits: How Banshees Reflect An Ever-Changing View Of Women In Society, Brianna Leonard

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

A banshee, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “a female spirit in Gaelic folklore whose appearance or wailing warns a family that one of them will soon die.” This definition, while correct, barely scratches the surface of banshees in Celtic mythology. These lamenting spirits were once known as “keeners,” or women who sang sad songs at funerals in medieval tradition. Keeners were paid remarkably well, and some were so talented that powerful families claimed they were “bean sidhe,” or fairy women. Over time, banshees have been interpreted in many ways, and the women who were once paid to sing at …

Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu Dec 2018

Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu

Theses

Extensive studies have been conducted on both musical scores and audio tracks of western classical music with the finality of learning and detecting the key in which a particular piece of music was played. Both the Bayesian Approach and modern unsupervised learning via latent Dirichlet allocation have been used for such learning tasks. In this research work, we propose and develop the novel idea of treating musical sheets as literary documents in the traditional text analytics parlance, to fully benefit from the vast amount of research already existing in statistical text mining and topic modeling.

We specifically introduce the idea …

Lexical Retrieval Inhibition From Semantically Related Retrieval Primes, Abhilasha Ashok Kumar

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenological experience of lexical retrieval involves conscious and active attempts to retrieve semantically related information, but the direct influence of this retrieval process on subsequent retrieval is presently unknown. We investigated the influence of passively viewing or actively retrieving different types of information at the critical moment preceding lexical retrieval through a novel priming paradigm. Participants attempted to retrieve target words (e.g., FOLIAGE) from their low-frequency definitions or descriptions (e.g., the leafy parts of a plant or tree, collectively). Across five experiments, target retrieval was preceded by the brief presentation of a prime word (Experiment 1), progressive demasking of …

Using Deep Learning To Forecast Spatiotemporal Crime Patterns, Shuzhan Fan Dec 2018

Using Deep Learning To Forecast Spatiotemporal Crime Patterns, Shuzhan Fan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The distributional patterns of crime occurrences are closely related to their spatial, temporal, and environmental contexts. It has been a hot topic for researchers and crime analysts to discover such complex relationships in order to forecast crime, both spatially and temporally. Many factors play a role in the occurrences of crimes. Conventional crime forecasting research has primarily relied on historical crime records and socioeconomic data, while ignoring the rich social media and other environmental context data. The large volume of data requires a more appropriate forecasting framework with the ability to take in massive multimodal data and possibly achieve better …

Green Supply Chain Management: A Perspective On Best Practices In Gscm Design, Leroy Paddock, Natasha Rao Dec 2018

Green Supply Chain Management: A Perspective On Best Practices In Gscm Design, Leroy Paddock, Natasha Rao

Arkansas Law Review

Greening of company supply chains has become almost de rigueur for large, publicly facing companies. One indication of this situation is the fact that 35 of the Fortune 50 companies and at least 58 of the Fortune 100 companies discuss at least some aspects of their green supply chain management (GSCM) activities on their public websites, primarily under the heading of “responsible sourcing.” These GSCM activities ] have the potential to contribute in very important ways to meeting societal sustainability goals, influencing suppliers that are beyond the reach of the national laws of consumer nations, and driving changes in environmental …

Food Sustainability In The Age Of Complex, Global Supply Chains, Steph Tai Dec 2018

Food Sustainability In The Age Of Complex, Global Supply Chains, Steph Tai

Arkansas Law Review

Food production has become more complex over time. Moreover, we are producing food in an increasingly global, rather than local, manner. How can demands for sustainability be reinforced in this age of complex, global supply chains? This essay focuses on three key features of the modern food supply chain: the variety of components, the complexity of the chain itself, and diversity of “enforcement” mechanisms in food production supply chains. These features suggest that traditional governmental tools (such as command and control measures) and contractual tools (such as performance standards) may not be sufficient to ensure sustainable production methods.

“The Future Is In Good Hands”: A Pentadic Analysis Of President Barack Obama’S Farewell Address, R. Chase Dunn Dec 2018

“The Future Is In Good Hands”: A Pentadic Analysis Of President Barack Obama’S Farewell Address, R. Chase Dunn

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

President Barack Obama’s farewell address serves as a symbolic end to an eight-year tenure as president of the United States. The standard themes in Obama’s public addresses have been hope and change, and the president continues to elaborate on those here. While describing accomplishments of his administration and thanking important people, Obama uses his last address as president to craft a narrative in three strands—past, present, and future—meant to inspire civic engagement in his audience. I use Burke’s dramatistic pentad to discover how Obama rhetorically motivates his listeners towards this end. President Obama creates a sense of empowerment and audience …

After School Satan: Mimicry And Counteridentity As Strategies For Religious Resistance, Lacey Corey Brown Dec 2018

After School Satan: Mimicry And Counteridentity As Strategies For Religious Resistance, Lacey Corey Brown

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

The Satanic Temple strategically constructs their identity using counteridentifying symbols, such as Satan, to metaphorically resist Christian dogma in the context of U.S. American law and popular opinion. Through mimicry, they use faith as a tool of resistance to challenge the presence of The Good News Club, an Evangelical student program, in public schools. This paper rhetorically analyzes The Satanic Temple’s website to examine the communicative tactics used to shape the counter spiritual reality within their newly established and subversive After School Satan club. This paper concludes that without communicative adaptation and dialogue with parental stakeholders, The Satanic Temple ultimately …

The Great Divide: What Dr. Moreau Tells Us About Posthumanism And The Anthropocene, Cynthia Rosenfeld Dec 2018

The Great Divide: What Dr. Moreau Tells Us About Posthumanism And The Anthropocene, Cynthia Rosenfeld

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This critique of three films of The Island of Dr. Moreau, a classic story that keeps resurfacing in popular culture, aims to shed light on the geologic era in which we live, the Anthropocene. What do these films reveal about the Western conceptualization of the differences between “human” and “animal,” and what does this conceptualization reveal about the Anthropocene? The post-human analysis primarily employs concepts from Lacan, Derrida, and Eagleton, and includes a detailed look at the role of language. Dr. Moreau’s conceit of human uniqueness (and superiority) fosters the kind of thinking that allows humanity to ignore the …
