Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus-Encoded Viral Il-6 (Vil-6) Enhances Immunoglobulin Class-Switch Recombination, Santas Ana Rosario
Open Access Dissertations
Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is an oncogenic gamma-herpesvirus that causes several AIDS-defining malignancies, including Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and other lymphoproliferative disorders. These malignancies continue to burden AIDS patients, particularly one-seventh of the world’s population in sub-Saharan Africa, where highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is poorly accessible. To successfully establish lifelong persistence within a host, KSHV employs several strategies, including mimicry of host cytokines, to modulate the immune response and usurp cellular signaling pathways. One crucial cytokine is vIL-6, a viral homolog to human IL-6 (hIL-6) and mouse IL-6 (mIL-6). Although the immune system plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis …

Developing An Online Computational Thinking Instrument For Elementary Students, Guanhua Chen
Open Access Dissertations
This study is part of a larger design study that iteratively improves a robotics programming curriculum as well as a computational thinking (CT) instrument. Its focus was majorly on CT assessment and particularly on an online CT instrument with logging functionality that can store a student's problem-solving process by recording interactions between a test-taker and the items with timestamps. The purposes of this research were to examine the psychometric properties of an online CT instrument, test if significant improvement in CT could be found by 200 5th graders who took a robotics programming course and the CT instrument as pretest …
Reconstructing Uncertain Response Surfaces With Application To Lagrangian Ocean Data, Rafael Carvalho Goncalves
Reconstructing Uncertain Response Surfaces With Application To Lagrangian Ocean Data, Rafael Carvalho Goncalves
Open Access Dissertations
Motivated by the problem of predicting the transport of material in the ocean, the present work went after two general problems. One is to use a probabilistic Lagrangian oil model to forecast the fate of an oil spill. The other is to use a dense array of Lagrangian observations to estimate the near surface submesoscale velocity field. Both problems were tackled with methodologies based on the reconstruction of response surfaces. In the first part, an uncertainty quantification methodology based on a non- intrusive polynomial chaos approach is developed for the forecasting of oceanic oil spills. This allows the model’s output …

A Genealogy Of Self-Development In Modern America, Kelsey M. Binder
A Genealogy Of Self-Development In Modern America, Kelsey M. Binder
English Department: Traveling American Modernism (ENG 366, Fall 2018)
This article offers a hypothetical conversation between various authors and creators who have embarked on progressive self-development journeys under the influence of a shared society that intermittently embraces and rejects the structures of the American Dream. While examining the instinctive human motives that cause the radical decision to actualize one’s life, this paper attempts to bridge the psychology of the desire for personal growth to our influential cultural landscape. It explores and analyzes the self-development journeys of individuals such as William Least Heat-Moon and Chris McCandless, as well as the recent message of self-development found in a cinematic pop culture …

We present an optical to near-infrared transmission spectrum of the inflated hot Jupiter WASP-52b using three transit observations from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph mounted on the Hubble Space Telescope, combined with Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera photometry at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. Since WASP-52 is a moderately active (log(Lx/Lbol) = −4.7) star, we correct the transit light curves for the effect of stellar activity using ground-based photometric monitoring data from the All-sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) and Tennessee State University's Automatic Imaging Telescope. We bin the data in 38 spectrophotometric light curves from 0.29 to 4.5 μm and measure the …

The Lay Folks’ Catechism, Alliterative Verse, And Cursus, Ian Cornelius
The Lay Folks’ Catechism, Alliterative Verse, And Cursus, Ian Cornelius
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The Lay Folks’ Catechism is an English rendering of injunctions issued in 1357 by John Thoresby, Archbishop of York, setting forth the elements of Christian belief. Ever since W. W. Skeat’s treatments, the Catechism has been placed in the general orbit of alliterative verse, yet closer identifications have proved elusive. The text is now recorded in both The Index of Middle English Verse and The Index of Middle English Prose; the principal stylistic study proposes that John Gaytryge, the author of the English text, may have been influenced by the system of Latin prose rhythm known as cursus. …

Context. It is of broad interest for galaxy formation theory to carry out a full inventory of the numbers and properties of dwarf galaxies, both satellite and isolated, in the Local Volume.Aims. Ultra-deep imaging in wide areas of the sky with small amateur telescopes can help to complete the census of these hitherto unknown low-surface-brightness galaxies, which cannot be detected by the current resolved stellar population and HI surveys. We report the discovery of Donatiello I, a dwarf spheroidal galaxy located one degree from the star Mirach (β And) in a deep image taken with an amateur telescope.Methods. The color-magnitude …
Psychological And Demographic Differences Of Bdsm Practitioners, Sabrina Jefferson
Psychological And Demographic Differences Of Bdsm Practitioners, Sabrina Jefferson
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The purpose of this study was to gain more information about demographic and psychological differences between the bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism (BDSM) population and the general population. BDSM has become more prominent in the knowledge of the general population with the notoriety of E.L. James’ book series 50 Shades of Grey, but even with the new prominence of BDSM in American households, there is a lack of knowledge about BDSM practitioners among psychotherapists. In this study, data was gathered from a sample of BDSM practitioners and a general population sample on a variety of demographic and psychological variables. Independent samples …
“Good Enough”: Teaching Confidence Through Revision, Mckayla Freeman
“Good Enough”: Teaching Confidence Through Revision, Mckayla Freeman
Tutor's Column
This paper explores the relationship between a student’s writing and their response to criticism. Many students respond negatively to revision suggestions when they have already finished their paper. However, revision is a vital part of all writings and must be included in the writing process. Criticizing a student’s essay can often cause the student to feel personally insulted. In order for them to revisit and edit something they’ve written, tutors must encourage them and remind them of the things they did well before pointing out mistakes. This will cause the student to remain self-affirmed, confident, and ready to change their …

Ecophysiology Of Lionfish Metabolic And Visual Systems: Are There Physiological Limits To Inshore Invasion?, Aaron Hasenei
Ecophysiology Of Lionfish Metabolic And Visual Systems: Are There Physiological Limits To Inshore Invasion?, Aaron Hasenei
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Lionfish (Pterois spp.), an invasive species native to the Indo-Pacific, have permanently established themselves throughout the greater Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and regions of the Western Atlantic ranging from as far north as North Carolina to central Brazil. As their fundamental range expands, lionfish threaten to migrate into estuarine environments as they have been found to tolerate low salinities and an eclectic range of temperatures. The physiological capacity of invasion was assessed by quantifying the visual ecology of lionfish utilizing corneal electroretinography (ERG) as well as their metabolic scope and hypoxia tolerances under various temperature-oxygen-regimes utilizing intermittent-flow respirometry. Seasonal …

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Court determined that NRS 616B.578(4) does not require an employer to know the precise medical terminology for an employee’s permanent physical impairment before the subsequent injury. However, the statute requires that an employee’s preexisting permanent physical impairment be fairly and reasonably observed from a written record and the impairment must amount to at least 6% whole person impairment.

Investigating Multiple Streams Of Consciousness: Using Descriptive Experience Sampling To Explore Internally And Externally Directed Streams Of Thought, Charles Fernyhough, Ben Alderson-Day, Russel T. Hurlburt, Simone Kühn
Psychology Faculty Research
Research into resting-state cognition has often struggled with the challenge of assessing inner experience in the resting state. We employed Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES), a method aimed at generating detailed and high-fidelity descriptions of experience, to investigate how experience in the resting state can vary between internal, external, and multiple simultaneous streams. Using a large body of experiential and brain activation data acquired from five DES participants, independent raters classified sampled moments of experience according to whether they were internally directed, externally directed, or contained elements of both at the same time. In line with existing models, comparison of internal …

Effects Of Cold Storage On Nondiapausing Eggs Of The Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Ryan W. Geisert, Dalton C. Ludwick, Bruce E. Hibbard
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, became much easier to research with the development of a nondiapausing rootworm strain. In the event that the eggs cannot be used immediately researchers have been known to delay egg hatch by storing the eggs at low temperatures. It is not well known how this technique could affect egg hatch or larval development, which could alter the results of an experiment. To test for this nondiapausing eggs of the western corn rootworm were stored at low temperatures to test for potential negative effects on hatch and larval development. Eggs were stored in either …
