Perception Of Risk For Older Adults: Differences In Evaluations For Self Vs. Others And Across Risk Domains, J Rolison, Y Hanoch, A Freund

School of Psychology

Background and Objectives: Proxy decision-making may be flawed by inaccurate perceptions of risk. This may be particularly true when older adults are the targets of the decisions, given the pervasive negative stereotypes about older adults. Methods: In study 1, individuals aged 18- to 87 years (as target persons) as well as one of their close social partners (as informants) reported on the risks they perceived for the target person in various life domains. Study 2 additionally explored potential differences in how people make risky decisions on behalf of younger and older adult targets. Younger (age 18–35 years) and older (age …

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us! Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. In 2017, the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Criss Library created a Textbook Reserves Pilot Project. At the time we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. We met with advisors across our campus who said students desperately needed textbooks to succeed. We had buy-in from library administrators, the bookstore, and student government, but something just …

Providing Contextual Information For Multi-Party Chats, Sammy El Ghazzal, Sandro Feuz

Defensive Publications Series

It can be difficult for the individual group members of a multi-party chat to determine the relationships that connect the different members. Owing to this unfamiliarity, individuals can feel unsure and hesitant to express themselves freely in the multi-party chat. Such restraint can limit the topics and style of chat messages. On the other hand, a lack of restraint can be deemed as inappropriate or offensive. This disclosure describes mechanisms that provide contextual information about connections among the members of an ad-hoc multi-party chat group. With permission of the group members, the techniques of this disclosure are applied to determine …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This paper investigated the use of an eye-gaze-controlled interface in a military aviation environment. We set up a flight simulator and used the gaze-controlled interface in three different configurations of displays (head down, head up, and head mounted) for military fast jets. Our studies found that the gaze-controlled interface statistically significantly increased the speed of interaction for secondary mission control tasks compared to touchscreen- and joystick-based target designation system. Finally, we tested a gaze-controlled system inside an aircraft both on the ground and in different phases of flight with military pilots. Results showed that they could undertake representative pointing and …

Despite a mandated 1-month rotation in developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP), pediatric residents report inadequate training in behavioral health care. As a first step in much needed curriculum development in this area, this study sought to assess learner experiences regarding the management of behavioral health problems during residency. Four focus groups were conducted for residents in years 1-3 of training in 2 residency programs in a northeastern state. Transcripts were analyzed and coded by researchers through qualitative classical content analysis. The exploratory analysis revealed 9 key themes: time requirements, rapport building, resources and referrals for behavioral health, psychiatric medications, diagnosis vs. treatment, …

Women's Perceptions On Feminism, Karina Ruiz Dec 2018

Women's Perceptions On Feminism, Karina Ruiz

Culture, Society, and Praxis

Throughout the progression of feminist waves, women have both united in solidarity and fractured in ideologies. A primary problem in today's feminist movement is the negative connotation that was left by the second wave which has alienated both women and men. The result is a feminism that is associated with extremism, negating the original intention of promoting equality. In this qualitative case study, I work with feminist and post-feminist theory to note how women perceive feminist in present day. Through survey questions and responses, I document the complexities of today's women who identify controversies on policing within the community and …

Cosmopolitanism In Silicon Valley: An Analysis Of Identity And Community, Gabriela Joseph Dec 2018

Cosmopolitanism In Silicon Valley: An Analysis Of Identity And Community, Gabriela Joseph

Culture, Society, and Praxis

The classic form of the nation-state is quickly disintegrating in favor of more fluid forms of cultural identity. Much of this is attributed to the impact of globalization. And in the wake of a hyper-connected global order, there is little doubt that cosmopolitanism is one the most relevant discourses of the coming century.

But how is this abstract notion grounded and operationalized? Who are the cosmopolitans? And what does cosmopolitanism look like?

This paper hopes to examine cosmopolitanism within the context of Silicon Valley by redefining what it means to be cosmopolitan, presenting the narratives of three individuals, and addressing …
