A Framework For The Consideration Of Narrative In Creative Arts Practice, Paul Green Jan 2018

A Framework For The Consideration Of Narrative In Creative Arts Practice, Paul Green

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

This research project is aimed at creative practitioners in art and design who choose to engage in postgraduate research and who recognise narrative to be an important aspect of their work. While the goal of narratology has been explicitly declared as an interest in understanding narrative in all its forms, this project responded to a perceived absence of art and design centred perspectives in the general literature on narrative. A general attitude has developed throughout the course of the twentieth century resulting in a view that narrative has become a dead issue for contemporary practitioners. Findings from the investigations conducted …

The Relationship Between Quality Defects And The Thermal Performance Of Buildings, João Alencastro, Alba Fuertes, Wilde P De Jan 2018

The Relationship Between Quality Defects And The Thermal Performance Of Buildings, João Alencastro, Alba Fuertes, Wilde P De

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The construction sector accounts for a significant portion of the total final energy use and carbon emissions worldwide. Despite efforts to reduce energy consumption through energy efficiency improvements in buildings, the measures proposed by the construction sector are falling short. Among several causes which lead buildings to perform differently to what was defined in the design stage, commonly referred to as the ‘energy performance gap’, the occurrence of quality defects has been acknowledged. This paper aims to identify through an in-depth literature review, quality defects which undermine the thermal performance of buildings by comparing the studies’ findings with regard to …

Reverse Logistics In Micro Businesses : An Exploratory Study, Mamata Dhakal Jan 2018

Reverse Logistics In Micro Businesses : An Exploratory Study, Mamata Dhakal

Plymouth Business School Theses

There has been growth in managing supply chain processes for enhancing both economic and environmental benefits. Consequently, new dimensions in the supply chain have been added, with one of them being reverse logistics. Reverse logistics deals with the backward flow of goods which help firms to recover and reinstate discarded products, helping firms to realise their economic and environmental initiatives. Reverse logistics has now become a matter of strategic importance, helping to bring sustainable competitive advantage to the firm. This study recognises the inclination of the current research in reverse logistics to focus on larger firms. Hence, this research explores …

Building Resistance To Brand Switching During Disruptions In A Competitive Market: An Identity Theory Perspective, Dominic Appiah Jan 2018

Building Resistance To Brand Switching During Disruptions In A Competitive Market: An Identity Theory Perspective, Dominic Appiah

Plymouth Business School Theses

The impact of identity on brand loyalty has taken precedence as an area of focus in recent marketing research. This has taken place in an era defined by technological revolution, which has created market disruptions and there are implications for customer–brand relationships. Nonetheless, the extant literature on brand loyalty does not extensively acknowledge the impact of socio-psychological attributes but rather functional utility maximisation. The brand loyalty literature has the notion that the perceived value of a brand is conceptualised and operationalised as a functional utilitarian value. Knowledge that illuminates how firms can reposition themselves to sustain brand loyalty when disruptions …

Corporate Governance In The Nonprofit Sector: A Grounded Theory Approach To Studying The Trustee Board, George Dexter Jan 2018

Corporate Governance In The Nonprofit Sector: A Grounded Theory Approach To Studying The Trustee Board, George Dexter

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis uses a constructivist grounded theory approach to investigate nonprofit corporate governance in the UK; using data obtained from participatory observations of board and associated meetings, workshops, and unstructured elite interviews. Open codes are generated and brought together as concepts, which are then iteratively compared and grouped in open categories. These categories are then reassembled using the paradigm model into five axial codes: the clash of orthodoxies; clash of motivations; regulator versus board power; clash of rationalities; and effective board duality. A dialectical approach is then used to create the core category of the ‘clash of neoliberal and public …

Supply Chain Management And Logistical Considerations In Distributing Crude Oil From Nigeria To China, Mervyn Olakunle Shiwoku Jan 2018

Supply Chain Management And Logistical Considerations In Distributing Crude Oil From Nigeria To China, Mervyn Olakunle Shiwoku

Plymouth Business School Theses

The evolution of supply chain management has made significant and continuous contributions to logistical processes. This is highly relevant to crude oil logistics in Nigeria, because both indigenous and multinational oil companies who distribute crude oil from Nigerian ports are yet to adopt an integrated export logistics operation. Besides, the study explores the philosophy of supply chain management applying theoretic frameworks of supply chain process management, demand variability, and vertical integration to encourage integrated export logistics for the distribution of crude oil from Nigeria to China. In addition, the research objectives are: to identify the components of crude oil exports; …

The United States Container Security Initiative And European Union Container Seaport Competition, Xufan Zhang Jan 2018

The United States Container Security Initiative And European Union Container Seaport Competition, Xufan Zhang

Plymouth Business School Theses

The increasing volume of container trade poses formidable security challenges. As a result of terrorist attacks, a variety of compulsory and voluntary security measures have been introduced to enhance and secure maritime container trade. The United States (US) Container Security Initiative (CSI) was claimed to impose serious problems in European Union (EU) ports, and in particular it was claimed to affect EU container port competitiveness due to compliance cost and operational inefficiency. This research aimed to analyse the impact of the CSI on EU container seaport competition. Following an abductive approach, a conceptual model was developed based on the literature …

The Determinants And The Consequences Of Adopting Accounting Standards In Islamic Banks: A Cross Country Study, Aziza Al Qamashoui Jan 2018

The Determinants And The Consequences Of Adopting Accounting Standards In Islamic Banks: A Cross Country Study, Aziza Al Qamashoui

Plymouth Business School Theses

This study investigates the determinants of adopting accounting standards (AAOIFI, IFRS or local standards) in thirty different countries with an Islamic banking industry. This study also examines the link between corporate governance disclosure, corporate social responsibility disclosure, and the adoption of accounting standards in the Islamic banking industry (IBI) as consequences for the adoption process. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only study that empirically investigates this topic. Environmental determinism theory is used as a framework to develop and test for explanations of the accounting standards used in countries where Islamic banks operate. Using multinomial logistic analysis …

A Thematic Analysis Of Anticompetitive Behaviour In The Credit Rating Process Of Structured Finance, Adah-Kole Onjewu

Plymouth Business School Theses

The credit rating industry is characterised by the high concentration of a small number of firms and, allegedly, this concentration stems from certain anticompetitive behaviours made manifest by the dominant firms in the industry. Therefore, as has yet to be done in empirical research, the purpose of this study is to carry out an exploration of the antitrust behaviours supposedly perpetuated by agents in the credit rating process for debt finance. The aim is to determine what influences, if any, the interactions and relationships in the rating process have on the sustenance of the oligopoly in the rating industry and …

The Development Of A Knowledge Network Framework To Support Knowledge Mobilisation In It Project Oriented Change Management, Ali Ibraheem Alkhuraiji Jan 2018

The Development Of A Knowledge Network Framework To Support Knowledge Mobilisation In It Project Oriented Change Management, Ali Ibraheem Alkhuraiji

Plymouth Business School Theses

Although there has been rich research conducted into the interrelated issues and factors among change management (ChM), knowledge management (KM) and project management (PM), most existing studies attempt to understand the role of KM in ChM and PM in general. Given the fundamental role played by KM in supporting IT project-oriented change management, the topics of knowledge networks and mobilisation across knowledge boundaries are relatively unexplored. Recent developments in KM have heightened the need for more understanding on four main issues: 1) insufficient knowledge traceability based on the relationships between knowledge elements and key factors; 2) most decision issues in …

An Evaluation Of Online Service Failures And Recovery Strategies In The Uk Fashion Industry, Samuel Ayertey

Plymouth Business School Theses

The emerging digital economy has brought about new paradigms for retailing. Consumers across the world face new opportunities and challenges as the Internet, the driving force of the new economy, has given rise to online fashion retailing as a new and increasingly popular way for retailers to sell clothing in the twenty-first century. Along with this opportunity comes the challenge of identifying and rectifying service failures. In spite of a proliferation of the number of studies on service failure and recovery in e-service settings, there is a paucity of knowledge in terms of how service failure and recovery practices are …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals have been established to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals will require a healthy and productive environment. An understanding of the impacts of chemicals which can negatively impact environmental health is therefore essential to the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals. However, current research on and regulation of chemicals in the environment tend to take a simplistic view and do not account for the complexity of the real world, which inhibits the way we manage chemicals. There is therefore an urgent need for a …

Engaging Without Exposing: Use Of A Fictional Character To Facilitate Mental Health Talk In Focus Groups With Men Who Have Been Subject To The Criminal Justice System, Christabel Owens, Mary Carter, Deborah Shenton, Richard Byng, Cath Quinn

Peninsula Medical School

In an effort to encourage men with experience of being subject to the criminal justice system to contribute to focus group discussions on the sensitive topic of mental health, while also doing our utmost to protect them from discomfort or risk of exploitation, we used a novel technique involving the creation of a fictional character, supplemented by an audio-recorded vignette. We studied the role played by this technique in achieving our stated aims of “engaging without exposing.” In this article, we report on the use of this technique in three focus groups, showing how in very different ways it shaped …
