Habitats Of Mind: Dhamma, The World, And Mindful Activism, Michael L. Masinter Jan 2018

Habitats Of Mind: Dhamma, The World, And Mindful Activism, Michael L. Masinter

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

As a Buddhist, teacher, and a graduate student, coming to know the conflicts and misconceptions that stem from partial views and experiences, I have found it difficult to locate where to stand and how to engage. Buddhist teaching and practice (Buddhadhamma) offers a pragmatic approach to an overarching series of questions and a method of practice designed to address them: What is suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the way leading to its cessation? These are the Ariya-sacca, the four noble truths (or four ennobling realities), which can be applied to the arising of suffering anywhere in nature—whether internal (mind/culture) …

Does Developmental Task Disruption Mediate The Link Between Childhood Adversity And Psychopathy?, Kali C. Williams Jan 2018

Does Developmental Task Disruption Mediate The Link Between Childhood Adversity And Psychopathy?, Kali C. Williams

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Research has linked adult psychopathy with abuse or neglect in childhood; however, less is known about how it relates to other adverse childhood experiences. The prevention of psychopathic traits may be possible if the issue is examined from a developmental psychopathology perspective, which attempts to understand how early experiences and disruptions in stage-salient tasks may contribute to pathological behavior. ACEs may disrupt the attachment bond between child and parent and continue to impact adult relational functioning, via cognitive templates of adult attachment styles and difficulties with emotion regulation.

This study examined whether ACEs were related to psychopathic trait scores in …

Implications Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems And Sense Of Place: A Case Study In The Mono Basin, Sara Elizabeth Matthews Jan 2018

Implications Of Unmanned Aircraft Systems And Sense Of Place: A Case Study In The Mono Basin, Sara Elizabeth Matthews

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This paper contributes to an understanding of the social implications of using UAS in natural resource areas; specifically, the ways in which these tools impact human constructed sense of place. This paper draws on in-depth interviews and document analysis to (a) develop an understanding of place meanings held among Mono Basin stakeholders and (b) define the ways in which increased UAS presence may interact with these visions of place.

In short, this research shows that sense of place in this rural area is influential in the way that UAS are received by local stakeholders. The changing nature of place meanings …

Listening To Our Graduate Students' Feedback: Graduate Student Exit And Alumni Surveys, Alison W. Hong-Novotney Jan 2018

Listening To Our Graduate Students' Feedback: Graduate Student Exit And Alumni Surveys, Alison W. Hong-Novotney

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Student and alumni surveys have become some of the most widely-used methods of assessment of student learning in higher education. While the majority of literature on student surveys and assessment focuses on undergraduate students, this study looks specifically at why graduate student exit and alumni surveys can be valuable tools within a comprehensive assessment plan. Listening to the feedback of current and former graduate students, and then acting upon that feedback, is crucial for the engagement and success of this unique population of students who bring their particular strengths and needs to their educational experiences. This study examined how master’s …

The Effect Of A Summer Family Fitness Program On The Fitness Levels Of Children With Disabilities, Emily Cole

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this study was to test the effect a summer-long family fitness program on the physical fitness levels of children with disabilities. Obesity in children with disabilities is a major health concern. Incorporating the child’s family, teaching them ways to stay active, and associating fun with physical activity was the focus of a summer-long family fitness program; FitFam. This study assessed the physical fitness levels of the participants, children ages six through twenty-one, using the standardized Fitnessgram assessment. Pre- and post- scores were used to determine the overall outcome of the participants’ physical fitness. This study did not …

Dinjik Enjit Nerrzhrii (We Are Hunting For Moose): An Evaluation Of Tribal Co-Management In The Yukon Flats, Interior Alaska, Kelda E. Britton Jan 2018

Dinjik Enjit Nerrzhrii (We Are Hunting For Moose): An Evaluation Of Tribal Co-Management In The Yukon Flats, Interior Alaska, Kelda E. Britton

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Gwich’in People of Interior Alaska have historically exercised self-governance in the Yukon Flats to protect traditional and customary use practices. A number of factors have challenged Gwich’in self-governance: land ownership in rural Alaska being under multiple jurisdictions, which has created complicated parameters for management of fish and wildlife; and the legal history of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), which has created an arbitrary and fragmented management system. Despite these challenges, Alaska Native communities have been working to reassert their self-governance over important lands and resources. One example is the co-management arrangement between the Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments …

Increasing Uninterrupted Walking Distance For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Steven R. Hinojosa Jan 2018

Increasing Uninterrupted Walking Distance For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Steven R. Hinojosa

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) do not engage in an adequate amount of physical activity. Often, students with a Level 2 or Level 3 diagnosis of ASD engage in behavior that may make it increasingly difficult for practitioners to encourage the increase of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine if preference assessment increase Uninterrupted Walking Distance in students with ASD. Researchers have demonstrated positive outcomes on physical activity levels when students are given the opportunity to choose their most preferred physical activity as a reinforcement. Results from this study showed statistically relevant walking data when …

The Effect Of The Loss Of Lgl1 In Murine Neural Progenitor Cells On Mapk Signaling And Proliferation, Monique R. Lacourse Jan 2018

The Effect Of The Loss Of Lgl1 In Murine Neural Progenitor Cells On Mapk Signaling And Proliferation, Monique R. Lacourse

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Glioblastoma is an incurable, aggressive, and highly invasive type of brain tumor that harbors tumor initiating cells characterized by disrupted polarized cell divisions. A cell polarity gene lethal (2) giant larvae 1 (Lgl1) has been implicated in gliomas and is a tumor suppressor initially identified in Drosophila with roles in proliferation. The loss of Lgl1 in Drosophila activates the MAPK protein kinase JNK and the Ras pathway and therefore its downstream kinase ERK, a transcription factor modulator. Furthermore, when Lgl1 is knocked out in mice, a phenotype similar to glioma is seen. Loss of the human form of …

An Analysis Of The Affect That Music Has On The Level Of Engagement And The Rate Of Efficiency During A Structured Task For Students With Autism Specturm Disorder, Dustin Joel Bradshaw

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This Study will look at the effectiveness of using music as an intervention during structured activities to increase the level of engagement in students with Autism by measuring time on task during a math skills activity. This is a single case research study of an 18-year-old male student with ASD. The student will be measured using alternate treatment variables in which the student will be instructed to wear headphones with classical music for a measured amount of time, and then alternatively, for the same amount of time, without headphones. The outcome will be measured by rate efficiency while completing a …

Jeweled Spider Flies (Eulonchus Tristis) Are Important Pollinators Of Iris Bracteata, A Rare Siskiyou Mountain Endemic, Jean-Paul E. Ponte Jan 2018

Jeweled Spider Flies (Eulonchus Tristis) Are Important Pollinators Of Iris Bracteata, A Rare Siskiyou Mountain Endemic, Jean-Paul E. Ponte

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Little is known about the pollination biology of the Pacific Coast Irises (Iris: series Californicae, hereafter PCI), especially who visits and pollinates their flowers. In general, Iris flowers are considered bee-pollinated, however, flies in the genus Eulonchus (Acroceridae) are known to visit some PCI members. Therefore, I assessed the relative importance of Eulonchus and other insect visitors to the pollination of a rare PCI species native to the Siskiyou Mountains, I. bracteata.

Methods. I quantified pollinator importance for all flower visitors at sites in northern California and southern Oregon as the product of average visit rate and …

Current Balance Levels In Deaf And Hearing Impaired Children, Megan E. Wink Jan 2018

Current Balance Levels In Deaf And Hearing Impaired Children, Megan E. Wink

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The purpose of this systematic review of literature is to evaluate the current balance levels in deaf and hearing-impaired children. Children with hearing impairments show balance and motor deficits mainly due to damaged or undeveloped areas of the vestibular system. The auditory sense plays a dynamic role in producing functional movements and motor coordination skills. Researchers founded that motor development skills are especially important to Deaf children because better skills lead to participation in Deaf sports as well as increased opportunities for social interaction. For children born or diagnosed as deaf or hearing-impaired, there is still the opportunity to keeping …

Territorialization Of The Internet Domain Name System, Marketa Trimble Jan 2018

Territorialization Of The Internet Domain Name System, Marketa Trimble

Scholarly Works

A territorialization of the internet – the linking of the internet to physical geography – is a growing trend. Internet users have become accustomed to the conveniences of localized advertising, have enjoyed location-based services, and have witnessed an increasing use of geolocation and geoblocking tools by service and content providers who – for various reasons – either allow or block access to internet content based on users’ physical locations. This article analyzes whether, and if so how, the territorialization trend has affected the internet Domain Name System (“DNS”). As a hallmark of cyberspace governance that aimed to be detached from …

How We Got Here: A Brief History Of Requester-Pays And Other Incentive Systems To Supplement Judicial Management Of Discovery, E. Donald Elliott Jan 2018

How We Got Here: A Brief History Of Requester-Pays And Other Incentive Systems To Supplement Judicial Management Of Discovery, E. Donald Elliott

Vanderbilt Law Review

Over the last two decades, a mature academic literature has developed about how we might use incentives as a complement to discretionary judicial decisions for controlling civil discovery. Professor Brian Fitzpatrick and the other organizers of the Vanderbilt Law Review “Future of Discovery” Symposium thought it would make sense to start this symposium by summarizing what has been written previously on the subject in the hope that the next time that the rules advisory committee tries again to solve the problem2 of properly managing discovery, it might benefit from some of this learning.

Crossing The Studio Art Threshold: Information Literacy And Creative Populations, Sarah Carter, Heather Koopmans, Alice Whiteside

Communications in Information Literacy

Artists often require visual and inspirational information sources that range outside of library walls and websites, and develop their work within the complex social environment of the studio. Librarians historically engage with studio art and design students using multiple standards documents. This article offers an analytical literature review of the pedagogical approaches librarians have taken toward their work in the art and design studios, specifically identifying library practitioners who have adapted or critiqued standards documents in order to address the unique needs of creative populations. The Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education …

Engendering Social Justice In First Year Information Literacy Classes, Conrad R. Pegues

Communications in Information Literacy

Information literacy classes are becoming common on college campuses to help first year students learn information search skills necessary for higher education. Free speech debates on some college campuses has bred a level of student activism not seen since the 1960s. Librarians can play a key role formulating positive and informed student responses through First Year Information Literacy (FYIL) classes that focus on information literacy in context of social justice issues of race, gender and free speech.

Librarians In The Lead: A Case For Interdisciplinary Faculty Collaboration On Assignment Design, Rachel Wishkoski, Kacy Lundstrom, Erin Davis

Communications in Information Literacy

Assignment design provides a potential niche for librarians to fill in improving research assignments and in providing opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration on teaching, but this can be difficult work to claim as librarians. In the 2016-2017 academic year, a team of three librarians at Utah State University, a mid-size research university, piloted an assignment design workshop for faculty. Based on a model developed by the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), our workshop’s core component was a structured, librarian-facilitated small group discussion among three to four faculty members from a range of academic departments. Interdisciplinary conversation about teaching research …

Understanding Financial Conflict Of Interest: Implications For Information Literacy Instruction, Heather B. Perry Jan 2018

Understanding Financial Conflict Of Interest: Implications For Information Literacy Instruction, Heather B. Perry

Communications in Information Literacy

Libraries have long existed to assist users in accessing accurate information for their needs. Industry has long been motivated to spread disinformation to promote their industry’s message to the public. Although corporate disinformation techniques perfected by the tobacco industry in the 1950’s were exposed, instead of disappearing they have only grown more influential with the rise of the internet. Many industries from petroleum to pharmaceuticals use scientific research to promote their corporate message and have contributed to harming the public. Users need information literacy (IL) to provide them with the skills they need to critically evaluate information and reject the …

Music And The Brain, Maddie Nierman Jan 2018

Music And The Brain, Maddie Nierman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Music is an important part of cultures worldwide. It has been used throughout the ages as a method of conveying emotions to the listener. However, there is some confusion about exactly which areas of the brain are affected by music. This study shows the general areas of the brain stimulated by music, explaining how these sections influence emotion and learning capability. In addition, this paper demonstrates that music therapy may be helpful in relieving stress or some neurological disorders, based on the areas activated by music. Training in music has cognitive and motor coordination benefits, as well, because this training …

Music Modernization And The Labyrinth Of Streaming, Mary Lafrance Jan 2018

Music Modernization And The Labyrinth Of Streaming, Mary Lafrance

Scholarly Works

The shift from record sales to music streaming has revolutionized the music industry. The federal copyright regime, which is rooted in a system of economic rewards based largely on sales, has been slow to adapt. This has impaired the ability of copyright law to channel appropriate royalties to songwriters, music publishers, and recording artists when the streaming of their works displaces record sales. The Orrin G. Hatch-Bob Goodlatte Music Modernization Act of 2018 addresses some of the most significant flaws in the current system. At the same time, it creates significant ambiguities and leaves some existing issues unresolved.

Is Pena-Rodriguez V. Colorado Just A Drop In The Bucket Or A Catalyst For Improving A Jury System Still Plagued By Racial Bias, And Still Badly In Need Of Repairs, Robert I. Correales

Scholarly Works

Historically, race-based jury bias has maintained the most prominent place in the hierarchy of social ills that have plagued the American Criminal Justice System. Relying on Due Process and Equal Protection principles, the United States Supreme Court and lower federal courts have chipped away at the problem with mixed results. State Courts have also served as laboratories, providing important lessons on the successes and failures of different approaches, often leading the way with their innovations. A formidable obstacle commonly referred to as a "black box," better known as the no-impeachment rule, has made progress difficult. The no-impeachment rule was designed …
