Barriers To Teachers' Use Of Environmentally-Based Education In Outdoor Classrooms, Sheri Ruether
Barriers To Teachers' Use Of Environmentally-Based Education In Outdoor Classrooms, Sheri Ruether
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Numerous research studies have shown that when teachers take children outdoors to learn, children show an increase in cognitive, physical, social, and emotional skills. Few researchers have focused, however, on teachers and their decision to use the outdoors as a way of teaching. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore whether life experiences impact a teacher's choice to not use the outdoor environment. Ham and Shuman's model of environmental education commitment and Kaplan and Kaplan's environmental cognition theory served as the conceptual frameworks for this study. The research question was designed to explore the experiences and barriers of …
Association Between Type Of Diabetes Education And Health Status, Limitations, And Healthcare, Starr Michelle Seip
Association Between Type Of Diabetes Education And Health Status, Limitations, And Healthcare, Starr Michelle Seip
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes is an epidemic that has started to capture political attention in the United States because of the devastating health care costs associated with the disease. Researchers in other studies have concluded that additional education face-to-face (FTF) and FTF with alternative forms of diabetes communication (FTF plus) have been beneficial. However, there is very little information on the comparison of the two groups as mentioned above when comparing chronic limitations, self-perception, health status, and healthcare satisfaction as circumscribed by specific demographic population. This study was an investigation of the above variables and explored how specific demographic characteristics (age, gender, educational …

Victims' Perspectives Of Management's Interventional Efforts Regarding Relational Aggression In The Workplace, Don Simmons
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Relational aggression (RA) is a social phenomenon that can severely impact organizational profitability and employee productivity. A gap in the literature exists concerning appropriate interventions to manage RA. The purpose of this study was to explore successful interventions that have been used to manage RA. The theoretical framework was informed by psychological contract theory. Data were collected via semistructured face-to-face interviews with 12 victims, and then analyzed using data management, reading and memorization, description, classification, interpretation, and representation. NVivo software was used to organize the data in this study. The research consisted of 3 subquestions addressing the role of written …

Sexual Orientation And Intimate Partner Violence Among Women Who Have Sex With Women, Shanna Renn Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Limited knowledge exists about sexual orientation and intimate partner violence among women who have sex with women. These women are at risk for adverse physical and mental health hygiene outcomes that may result from unhealthy lifestyles secondary to intimate partner violence. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between sexual orientation and intimate partner violence among women who have sex with women. The constructs of the biopsychosocial model guided the study and examination of the relationships among biological factors (sexual orientation), social contexts (support of family and friends and use of community services), and psychological influence (mental …
A Transition Quick-Guide For Educating Youth With Hemophilia, Joetta Smith
A Transition Quick-Guide For Educating Youth With Hemophilia, Joetta Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A 2009-2010 National Assessment Survey of youth with special needs such as hemophilia showed that 40% of youth between the ages of 12 and 17 had a transition plan before transitioning to adult care services. The lack of a transition plan caused youth to fall into a fragmented care gap when transition services are inadequate. During the gap, youth with hemophilia increased use of the emergency room and were hospitalized for complications such as frequent joint or muscle bleeding and joint disability. As a result, the health status of affected youth becomes fragile and health care costs escalate. The practice …

Maternal Characteristics And The Risk Of Cleft Lip And Palate In The United States, Letha Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) is an ongoing public health issue across the globe, and in the United States. The estimated number of babies born each year in the United States with cleft palate (CP) is about 2,650, while CLP affects approximately 4,440 babies. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to determine if there is a relationship between CLP and maternal characteristics such as reproductive history (advanced maternal age, maternal obesity, prenatal visits, month prenatal care began, number of pregnancies, gestational age at birth, assisted reproductive technology used, gestational diabetes, and hypertension), socioeconomic status of …
Antibiotic Prescribing Habits Of Urgent Care Providers, Mellisa Thompson
Antibiotic Prescribing Habits Of Urgent Care Providers, Mellisa Thompson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Antibiotics are commonly prescribed and requested for viral illnesses despite evidence-based research studies and societal guidelines that advise against this practice. Literature has indicated that antibiotic decision-making comes from a provider's experience or exposure to illness, uncertainty of illness, or from being pressured by the patient. Nurses and advanced practice nurses are important participants in the antibiotic stewardship initiative. The purpose of this project was to examine potential knowledge deficits responsible for inappropriate antibiotic prescribing at a rural urgent care clinic in the southeastern United States, which when addressed could promote an educational in-service to decrease the number of antibiotics …
Experiences Of Parenting For African American Female Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Chelsea Sharpe
Experiences Of Parenting For African American Female Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Chelsea Sharpe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to a number of adverse effects in adulthood including higher levels of depression, shame, guilt, self-blame, somatic concerns, anxiety, dissociation, repression, denial, relationship problems, and sexual problems. Little is known, however, about the influence CSA has on parenting, specifically among African American mothers, as previous researchers have primarily focused on the trauma experienced by survivors. Examining the impact of CSA on African American mothers' parenting is important as those children of survivors will often also experience the impact of the long-term sequelae associated with CSA. Guided by womanist theory, the purpose of this …

Patient-Centered Medical Homes And Parental Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Medication Beliefs And Adherence, Sydney L. Watkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As many as 87% of children discontinue ADHD medication, which can lead to clinically significant academic, cognitive, and social impairment. ADHD costs billions of dollars to the healthcare and educational systems, and previous attempts to stem these costs and increase ADHD medication adherence have been unsuccessful. The purpose of this study was to determine if patient-centered medical homes (PCMH), which have been shown to improve patient health outcomes, impact parental beliefs (benefits vs. risks) about ADHD medication and adherence to ADHD medication. The theory of planned behavior was the theoretical framework for this study. There were 294 parents of children …

Perception Of Nigerian Immigrants Of Police And Policing In The United States, Akinniyi Ademola Akinropo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nigerian immigrants in the United States exhibit complex and different perceptions of police in the criminal justice system than those of African Americans who are born in the United States. In order for Nigerian immigrants to contribute to improved police-community relations, their views and experiences with local police should be evaluated and applied to police agency decision-making. The purpose of this narrative study was to explore Nigerian immigrants' perceptions of police and policing in the United States (U.S.). Social cognitive theory was utilized as a lens of analysis to understand how prior experiences can influence future behavior and expectations. Structured …

Reducing Sport-Related Injuries: Perspectives From Nfl High School Coach Of The Year Recipients, Lalisa Anthony
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
American football sport-related injuries have negatively affected millions of high school students' quality of life. Although there are studies about types, conditions, and psychological effects of injuries, a gap remained in the literature that involved injury prevention from the head coach's perspective. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to fill this gap by exploring how head coaches perceive their role and responsibility in reducing sport-related injury occurrences. Sabatier and Weible's advocacy coalition, Diener and Dweck's achievement goal theory, and Fishbein and Ajzen's theory of reasoned action framed this study. The research questions focused on the lived experiences from …

Middle School Parents' Beliefs Regarding Learning Management System Use In Mathematics, Vaughn Malcolm Bradley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Middle school is a critical time in students' learning of mathematics, something a Learning Management System (LMS) is designed to help parents support. What remains unknown is how parents use an LMS to monitor their children's progress in mathematics. This qualitative case study explored how parents from one midAtlantic middle school with 543 students used an LMS, EdLine, to support their children's autonomous achievement in mathematics. Expectancy-value theory and social cognitive theory made up the conceptual framework used to evaluate study findings. A criterion-based process was used to select nine middle school parents from grades 6, 7, and 8 as …
Relationship Between Teachers' Concerns Toward Data Meetings And Student Achievement, Nelson Brown
Relationship Between Teachers' Concerns Toward Data Meetings And Student Achievement, Nelson Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Schools that employ data-driven instructional techniques and policies also tend to employ data meetings, in which teachers and other stakeholders exchange ideas, form agendas, and otherwise, apply data-derived insights that result in pedagogical action. The problem investigated in this study was that the local district has not yet measured the effectiveness of these data meetings. The purpose of this correlational study was to measure the relationship between teachers' concerns about data meetings and students' performance in math as measured by the change scores on the Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading (STAR) test in a North Alabama school. Students at an inner city school have low test results despite making progress. The study examines the problem that technology plans implemented by the Board of Education could not improve student achievement. Educational policy recommends to increasingly sustain teaching by educational technology. Therefore, this research examines the teacher knowledge necessary for technology integration in classes, and the ways this knowledge can be fostered. The theoretical framework of this study integrates 2 prominent theories of instructional science: learning by design (LBD) and technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK). The relationship between LBD, TPACK, and technology integration in the classroom was examined. …
Media Marketing Strategies University Leaders Use To Increase Alumni Financial Support, Wesley Carter
Media Marketing Strategies University Leaders Use To Increase Alumni Financial Support, Wesley Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Colleges and universities in the United States could end operations in record numbers largely from financial shortfalls. The Urban Institute reported that nonprofit organizations lost $3.4 billion in reneged pledges from 2013 to 2014 from donor dissatisfaction, creating a problem because financial losses can occur from a lack of understanding on how media marketing efforts affect fundraising. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to identify traditional and social media marketing strategies that some nonprofit college and university leaders use to increase alumni financial support. Interviews took place with 7 college or university leaders at 3 private, nonprofit …
Waste Management Minimization Strategies In Hospitals, Andrea L. Clark
Waste Management Minimization Strategies In Hospitals, Andrea L. Clark
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During the delivery of healthcare services, hospital employees use enormous amounts of water, energy, and nonbiodegradable carcinogenic plastics. In the U.S., hospital staff generate an average of over 7,000 tons of waste per day at an average cost of $0.28 per pound for the disposal of regulated medical trash, which if efficiently managed or reduced, could result in substantial cost savings. Using the organizational learning and the transaction cost economics theories as the conceptual frameworks, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore strategies healthcare leaders used to minimize their waste management operational costs. Data were collected using …

Transitional Care For The Cardiac Surgery Population: Development Of A Clinical Practice Guideline, Sheila Davies
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recovering from a cardiac surgery procedure and the transition to home can be an overwhelming experience for patients and caregivers. A tertiary care hospital's cardiothoracic surgery department suspended a nurse-practitioner-coordinated transitional care program in the 1st quarter of 2016. Following this decision, the readmission rate increased from its previous rate of 15.6% in quarter 1 to 20% in quarter 3. The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a clinical practice guideline (CPG) that can bridge the gap in the transitional care process. The transitional care model informed the design of the project. A draft guideline was distributed to …

Immigration Attorneys' Perceptions And Attitudes About Delays In Removal Proceeding Hearings, Awa C. Diawara
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Immigration courts in the United Sates are struggling to resolve 610,524 removal
proceedings cases with approximately 330 judges located in 58 immigration courts
nationwide. Due to the limited number of judges, case backlogs have increased steadily,
with the wait time being 854 days in 2017 for the first hearing and much longer for case
resolution. The purpose of this case study was to explore the perceptions and attitudes of
immigration attorneys about delays in removal proceeding hearings in an immigration
court in the southwest. Kettl's transformation of governance theory served as the
theoretical foundation for this study, which explored …
