Role Of The Gut Microbiota As A Natural Adjuvant For Vaccine, Nicole Benn, Gerard F. Hoyne
Role Of The Gut Microbiota As A Natural Adjuvant For Vaccine, Nicole Benn, Gerard F. Hoyne
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
Vaccines have provided the most beneficial contribution to public health. Generating antigen specific antibody responses and long lasting memory are crucial for the protective immunity offered by vaccination. Unfortunately, not all individuals respond in the same manner to vaccine formulations. The microbiota is established during postnatal development and remains relatively stable for long periods. Our understanding that the microbiota can have beneficial effects on human health has led immunologists to investigate how these organisms may shape the innate and adaptive immune responses of the host. In this review we examine the impact of the microbiota on the host immune responses …

"I Am Tired Of Having To Prove That My Husband Was Dead." Dealing With Practical Matters In Bereavement And The Impact On The Bereaved, Pippa Blackburn, Caroline Bulsara
Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles
This paper reports on experiences of dealing with practical matters after death. Semi structured interviews with bereaved individuals were thematically analyzed. Within the theme of coping, dealing with practical matters was a significant stressor and was found to be extremely challenging, time consuming, and to negatively impact on mental and emotional well-being. This study adds new insights on the challenges experienced by the bereaved when attending to practical matters and may help to inform the design of bereavement support, inform standard operating procedures of businesses, and government bereavement leave legislation.

One-Step Synthesis Of Co@C Composite As High-Performance Anode Material For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Mingjun Xiao, Fuliang Zhu, Gongrui Wang, Chaoyu Duan, Yanshuang Meng, Yue Zhang
Manufacturing Engineering: Faculty Publications (2015-2023)
A carbon-coated cobalt (Co@C) composite was synthesized by a one-step method using ionic liquid as carbon source and reducing agent. The Co@C composite exhibited a core-shell structure, in which the cobalt nanoparticles uniformly embedded in the carbon matrix. When used as the anode material for lithium ion batteries, the cobalt nanoparticles enhanced the kinetics of Li+ and electronic transport during the charge/discharge process. The Co@C composite material delivered a reversible capacity of 657.3 mAh g-1 after 60 cycles at a current density of 0.1C and exhibits improved rate performance when compared with pure carbon.

Creating a data visualization solution for automotive dealers to enhance sales performance. As many auto dealers use over 20 vendors per store, it is very difficult to keep track of vendor performance. Therefore, auto dealers need a tool that explains vendor performance through visual charts and graphs. VendorGraphs will meet this need.
The Use Of Zingari/Nomadi/Rom In Italian Crime Discourse, Theresa Catalano
The Use Of Zingari/Nomadi/Rom In Italian Crime Discourse, Theresa Catalano
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This study examines the use of the metonymies zingari/nomadi/rom [Gypsies/Nomads/Roma] in Italian media discourse, in order to critically reflect on their relation to the perception of Roma. The author analyses the frequency of these terms in general discourse and crime discourse, as well as the way they are used in context. The findings reveal that nomadi and rom are used to directly and indirectly index Roma, and have a significant impact on their ethnicization and criminalization. In addition, the episodic framing of crime events, combined with the use of these metonymies, erases the Italian government’s responsibility for the conditions of …
Une Certain Équivoque? A Study Of Vincent Van Gogh's Ambivalent Engagement With Prostitution, Highlighted By The 1888 Courrier Français Controversy, Fiona B. Saint-Davis
Une Certain Équivoque? A Study Of Vincent Van Gogh's Ambivalent Engagement With Prostitution, Highlighted By The 1888 Courrier Français Controversy, Fiona B. Saint-Davis
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
Discussions of prostitution are commonplace in the history of nineteenth-century French art, but this paper proposes that discourses specific to 1888 concerning the visual representations of prostitution have been insufficiently analysed with regard to Vincent van Gogh's paintings of 1888. Focusing on the artist's responses to brothel sketches sent to him by Émile Bernard in 1888, this paper proposes their overlooked contingency with a censorship controversy that attended the publication of Louis Legrand's full-page lithograph, Prostitution, first published in Le Courrier Français in June 1888. Expanding on my Undergraduate thesis, which addressed Bernard's brothel drawings, this paper focuses on Van …
The Biological Effects Of Engineered Nanomaterials On Soil Organisms: Surface Coating And Age Matter, Kristi Tatsi
The Biological Effects Of Engineered Nanomaterials On Soil Organisms: Surface Coating And Age Matter, Kristi Tatsi
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have been increasingly used in various applications. Often, the ENMs are functionalised with a surface coating to enhance their properties. Decades of research has provided information on mostly pristine and unmodified ENMs, while ecotoxicity of coated ENMs and how their hazard changes with age in soils is still uncertain. The thesis aimed to determine the toxic effects and bioaccumulation potential of CuO ENMs and CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with different chemical coatings (carboxylate, COOH; polyethylene glycol, PEG; ammonium, NH4+) on the earthworm (Eisenia fetida), and compare the effects to their metal salt (CuSO4) or micron-sized counterpart. Then, …
The Effects Of Selected Herbicides And Booster Biocides On The Brown Seaweed Ectocarpus Siliculosus, Mohd Akmal Bin Hashim
The Effects Of Selected Herbicides And Booster Biocides On The Brown Seaweed Ectocarpus Siliculosus, Mohd Akmal Bin Hashim
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
In the present study, two strains of Ectocarpus siliculosus with different pollution histories, LIA4 and Es524, were exposed to three PSII inhibitor herbicides, diuron (DIU), terbuthylazine (TBA) and isoproturon (IPU). Evaluation of their effects on growth and photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, qP) have demonstrated negative impacts of all herbicides on both strains. With reference to the 7 d RGR EC50 values; DIU (9.9 - 25 μg L-1); TBA (18 – 28 μg L-1); IPU (257 – 315 μg L-1), the reported environmental concentrations for DIU were higher than the values that exert negative effects to E. siliculosus. However, as for …
Exploring The Teaching-Research Nexus In College Based And University Higher Education, Cathy Ann Schofield
Exploring The Teaching-Research Nexus In College Based And University Higher Education, Cathy Ann Schofield
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
In traditional university higher education the normal expectation is that academic staff will undertake teaching and research. There is an implicit assumption that active researchers provide a high quality learning experience, with research-informed teaching at its core. The research presented in this thesis explores aspects of the teaching-research nexus in university and college-based higher education. As there is not traditionally a research culture within college-based higher education it may be assumed that the learning experience may be of a lesser quality. This research considered four aspects of provision. It considered institutional and lecturer views on the nexus before examining what …
The Biogeography And Conservation Status Of The Rocky Plateaus Of The Northern Western Ghats, India., Christopher Thorpe
The Biogeography And Conservation Status Of The Rocky Plateaus Of The Northern Western Ghats, India., Christopher Thorpe
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Rocky plateaus are globally threatened ecosystems and the lateritic plateaus in northern section of the Indian Western Ghats/Sri Lanka Biodiversity Hotspot (NWG) are notable landscape features. The NWG are geologically distinct from and biologically isolated from the other two sections of the Western Ghats. The NWG is known to possess elevated levels of endemic flora their biotic relationships remain poorly understood. We present here the first quantitative multi-taxa comparative study of plateau fauna in the northern Western Ghats. Ants, water beetles and amphibians were selected for the comparison as they use different ecological resources from each other and at various …
Mixing And Dispersion Of A Small Estuarine Plume, Megan Sheridan
Mixing And Dispersion Of A Small Estuarine Plume, Megan Sheridan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Entrainment velocity, salt flux and the turbulent diffusivity of salt are estimated in the outflow of a small, radially spreading buoyant outflow, just outside of the Teign Estuary mouth, as a means to compare mixing dynamics between very small and larger–scale estuarine and river plumes, and build on a scant knowledge base regarding the former. The analysis was made using a control volume approach, based on the conservation of momentum, volume and salt, from a Lagrangian perspective. Drifting buoys were used to accomplish this. The analysis was based on that employed by McCabe et al. (2008), with some modifications to …
Patterns And Process: Biodiversity And Ecosystem Function Response To Changes In The Arable Landscape, Nicholas Alexander James Berkley
Patterns And Process: Biodiversity And Ecosystem Function Response To Changes In The Arable Landscape, Nicholas Alexander James Berkley
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Land use change is a major driver of species loss worldwide, the extent and intensity of agricultural land use poses particular pressures for biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. In recent years, agroecosystems have seen the introduction of 2nd generation bioenergy crops in order to tackle anthropogenic climate change, providing a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. In this thesis I study the impact of cultivating two commercial perennial energy crops (PECs), Miscanthus x giganteus and willow short-rotation coppice, when compared to the cereal crops they replace. I investigate processes relevant to the provisioning of pollination and decomposition services and …
Kaolinite As An Amendment For Counteracting Hydrophobicity In Artificial Peat-Based Potting Substrates, Sarah Bettany
Kaolinite As An Amendment For Counteracting Hydrophobicity In Artificial Peat-Based Potting Substrates, Sarah Bettany
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
It has been demonstrated in pot experiments at Duchy College Rosewarne, Cornwall, U.K. that adding kaolinite (china clay) to growing media results in an increase in plant biomass. However, the underlying reason for this response is unknown, though, it is speculated that it improves the plants’ ability to tolerate stressful conditions such as heat and drought. In this study four artificial organic substrates (peat, peat/green waste, John Innes no.2 and a bark-based substrate) containing different concentrations of kaolinite (0%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 40%) were tested for capillary rise and water drop penetration time (WDPT). In addition, plant growth experiments …

A Comparison Of Classical Versus Deep Learning Techniques For Abusive Content Detection On Social Media Sites, Hao Che, Susan Mckeever, Sarah Jane Delany
Conference papers
The automated detection of abusive content on social media websites faces a variety of challenges including imbalanced training sets, the identification of an appropriate feature representation and the selection of optimal classifiers. Classifiers such as support vector machines (SVM), combined with bag of words or ngram feature representation, have traditionally dominated in text classification for decades. With the recent emergence of deep learning and word embeddings, an increasing number of researchers have started to focus on deep neural networks. In this paper, our aim is to explore cutting-edge techniques in automated abusive content detection. We use two deep learning approaches: …

Algorithmic Design And Architectural Machines, Hannah Langr
Algorithmic Design And Architectural Machines, Hannah Langr
Architecture Theses
What is our relationship with technology? As designers, we sit on the precipice between the abstract and the alien; between meaningful imagination and reductive otherness. With the permeation of algorithmic software in the architectural profession, are we able to design algorithmically with meaning? How can digital means aid poetic architecture? This thesis opens a less examined side of algorithmic thinking within the dialogue between designers and the technology we use. Language, humor, and pataphors become building materials in this architectural translation of ‘Pataphysics, a rebel, absurdist science created by playwright Alfred Jarry. A dense prospection and oscillation through philosophy, history, …

"The Essential Characteristic": Enumerated Powers And The Bank Of The United States, Richard Primus
"The Essential Characteristic": Enumerated Powers And The Bank Of The United States, Richard Primus
Michigan Law Review
The idea that Congress can legislate only on the basis of its enumerated powers is an orthodox proposition of constitutional law, one that is generally supposed to have been recognized as essential ever since the Founding. Conventional understandings of several episodes in constitutional history reinforce this proposition. But the reality of many of those events is more complicated. Consider the 1791 debate over creating the Bank of the United States, in which Madison famously argued against the Bank on enumerated-powers grounds. The conventional memory of the Bank episode reinforces the sense that the orthodox view of enumerated powers has been …
Examining Outcomes Of Marketing Actions From Customer, Investor, And Operational Perspectives, Leon Gim Lim
Examining Outcomes Of Marketing Actions From Customer, Investor, And Operational Perspectives, Leon Gim Lim
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation examines the impact of three distinct marketing actions from three different perspectives, i.e., customer, investor, and operational. Specifically, the first essay examines investors’ evaluation of firms’ price-increase preannouncements, thereby responding to recent calls for exploring investors’ evaluation of a firm’s pricing actions which have been predominantly examined from consumers’ perspective. The second essay adopts an operations lens to present the first empirical examination about the impact of customer satisfaction on the future costs of selling and producing for a firm. The essay, therefore, is of direct importance to CEOs as they consider costs as their top priority. In …
