A Physical Biology, The Electron Neutrino Mass, And The Role Of Quantum Mechanics In Nature, Maurice Goodman Jan 2018

A Physical Biology, The Electron Neutrino Mass, And The Role Of Quantum Mechanics In Nature, Maurice Goodman

Articles

In science we need to remove physics and earth science from the fundamental sciences and treat Biology as a fundamental natural (physical) science. Attempts to keep Biology autonomous because it is holistic, from the physical sciences, are just disguised anthropocentrism. Physical sciences have holistic features also. The autonomy of Biology is at odds with a holistic, integrated, science and is preventing progress in science. For example, every cell needs a 'global' communication system to keep order and stability with rapid information transfer across cellular scales. We have yet to figure out how this is achieved. Over the last 30 years, …

Optical Whispering Gallery Mode Cylindrical Micro-Resonator Devices For Sensing Applications, Vishnu Kavungal Jan 2018

Optical Whispering Gallery Mode Cylindrical Micro-Resonator Devices For Sensing Applications, Vishnu Kavungal

Doctoral

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators are devices attractive for many practical applications including optical sensing, micro-lasers, optical switches, tunable filters and many others. Their popularity is due to the high Q-factors and the exceptional sensitivity of their optical properties to the resonator’s size, refractive index as well the properties of the surrounding medium. The main focus of this thesis is on the cylindrical WGM micro-resonators due to the simplicity of their fabrication and light coupling that they offer in comparison with other WGM devices. At first, an in-depth experimental investigation of the WGM effect in different types of cylindrical micro-resonators …

The Impact Of The School Counselor Supervision Model On The Self-Efficacy Of School Counselor Site Supervisors, Carleton H. Brown, Arturo Olivárez Jr., Lorraine Dekruyf Jan 2018

The Impact Of The School Counselor Supervision Model On The Self-Efficacy Of School Counselor Site Supervisors, Carleton H. Brown, Arturo Olivárez Jr., Lorraine Dekruyf

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Supervision is a critical element in the professional identity development of school counselors; however, available school counseling-specific supervision training is lacking. The authors describe a 4-hour supervision workshop based on the School Counselor Supervision Model (SCSM; Luke & Bernard, 2006) attended by 31 school counselors from three southern U.S. school districts. Employing a pre-experimental pretest-posttest research design using the Site Supervisor Self-Efficacy Survey-revised (DeKruyf, 2011), the authors found a significant positive relationship (t (30) = 9.31, p & .001; Cohen's d = 1.67) between supervision training and supervisor self-efficacy. These findings bolstered the efficacy of the SCSM. The authors discuss …

Youth Paying For Sex: What Are The Associated Factors? Findings From A Cross-Sectional Study In Cambodia, Soaman Dizechi, Carinne M. Brody, Sovannary Tuot, Chhorvann Chhea, Vonthanak Saphonn, Kunthearith Yung, Siyan Yi Jan 2018

Youth Paying For Sex: What Are The Associated Factors? Findings From A Cross-Sectional Study In Cambodia, Soaman Dizechi, Carinne M. Brody, Sovannary Tuot, Chhorvann Chhea, Vonthanak Saphonn, Kunthearith Yung, Siyan Yi

BACKGROUND: At-risk male youth in Cambodia who purchase sex are at greater risk for HIV compared to the general population. Factors associated with paying for sex among youth are poorly studied, both globally and in Cambodia. This study aimed to identify specific factors associated with transactional sex with women among most-at-risk male youth in Cambodia.

METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted with 405 sexually active male youth aged 16-24 recruited at 'hotspots' in the capital city of Phnom Penh and seven provinces. We collected data on demographic factors, sexual behaviors, HIV testing and other potential factors. Multivariable logistic regression …

Still Forgotten Teachers In K-12 Online Learning: Examining The Perceptions Of Teachers Who Develop K-12 Online Courses, Michael K. Barbour, David Adelstein, Jonathan Morrison Jan 2018

Still Forgotten Teachers In K-12 Online Learning: Examining The Perceptions Of Teachers Who Develop K-12 Online Courses, Michael K. Barbour, David Adelstein, Jonathan Morrison

Like many K-12 online learning programs, the Illinois Virtual High School (IVHS) began by utilizing vendor content to populate its online courses. In its fourth year, the IVHS began a concerted effort to design more of its own online course content internally. The aim of this chapter was to examine the support needed and application of tools used by IVHS course developers. The data consisted of a two-part, web-based survey and telephone interviews that were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inductive analysis. The results showed these developers had a strong desire to use interactive elements in their course as well …

Mobile Link - A Theory-Based Messaging Intervention For Improving Sexual And Reproductive Health Of Female Entertainment Workers In Cambodia: Study Protocol Of A Randomized Controlled Trial, Carinne M. Brody, Sovannary Tuot, Pheak Chhoun, Dallas Swendenman, Kathryn C. Kaplan, Siyan Yi Jan 2018

Mobile Link - A Theory-Based Messaging Intervention For Improving Sexual And Reproductive Health Of Female Entertainment Workers In Cambodia: Study Protocol Of A Randomized Controlled Trial, Carinne M. Brody, Sovannary Tuot, Pheak Chhoun, Dallas Swendenman, Kathryn C. Kaplan, Siyan Yi

BACKGROUND: In Cambodia, HIV prevalence is concentrated in key populations including among female entertainment workers (FEWs) who may engage in direct or indirect sex work. Reaching FEWs with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services has been difficult because of their hidden and stigmatized nature. Mobile-phone-based interventions may be an effective way to reach this population and connect them with the existing services. This article describes study design and implementation of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a mobile health intervention (the Mobile Link) aiming to improve SRH and related outcomes among FEWs in Cambodia.

METHODS: A two-arm RCT will be …

Prevalence Of And Factors Associated With Utilization Of Herbal Medicines Among Outpatients In Primary Health Centers In Cambodia, Hattie Pearson, Tyler Fleming, Pheak Chhoun, Sovannary Tuot, Carinne M. Brody, Siyan Yi Jan 2018

Prevalence Of And Factors Associated With Utilization Of Herbal Medicines Among Outpatients In Primary Health Centers In Cambodia, Hattie Pearson, Tyler Fleming, Pheak Chhoun, Sovannary Tuot, Carinne M. Brody, Siyan Yi

BACKGROUND: Traditional, complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) is seen as a way to provide healthcare in both developed and developing countries across the world. In Cambodia, there is a long tradition of using TCAM. However, scant studies have been conducted on the extent of Cambodian TCAM use and how it interacts with allopathic health care to date. In this study, we examined the prevalence of and factors associated with utilization of herbal medicines among patients with chronic diseases in primary health care settings in Cambodia.

METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2015 with outpatients receiving treatment and care for …

Social And Behavioural Factors Associated With Risky Sexual Behaviours Among University Students In Nine Asean Countries: A Multi-Country Cross-Sectional Study, Siyan Yi, Vannarath Te, Supa Pengpid, Karl Peltzer Jan 2018

Social And Behavioural Factors Associated With Risky Sexual Behaviours Among University Students In Nine Asean Countries: A Multi-Country Cross-Sectional Study, Siyan Yi, Vannarath Te, Supa Pengpid, Karl Peltzer

While university students are potential human resources, this population group is particularly involved in health risk behaviours. Preventing risky sexual behaviours among them would contribute to prevention of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unwanted pregnancies, which have posed a great burden on population health. This study was therefore conducted to identify social and behavioural factors associated with risky sexual behaviours among university students in nine ASEAN countries. A multi-country, cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015 among university students by a network of researchers in the selected countries. A convenient sampling method and stratified random sampling procedures were employed to …

Teaching About Prejudice With A Bogardus Social Distance Scale Activity: Replication And Extension, Trent W. Maurer, Cassidy Keim Jan 2018

Teaching About Prejudice With A Bogardus Social Distance Scale Activity: Replication And Extension, Trent W. Maurer, Cassidy Keim

Human Ecology: Faculty Publications

This study presents a three-year replication and extension of Maurer’s (2013) evaluation of a classroom activity to reduce prejudice and discrimination. Students in six sections of an introductory family science course were assigned to one of three conditions and one of two target marginalized groups for a 3x2 design. Results differed significantly from those reported by Maurer (2013), and suggested that all three methods tested were equally effective in reducing prejudice and discrimination and that such changes were lasting. Additionally, a student participant served as a co-inquirer on this project, and her reflections on the process are included.

Making A Difference: The Launch Of The Journal Of Communication Pedagogy, Scott A. Myers

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Communication pedagogy is the systematic study, reflection, and identification of teaching practices across communication course curricula that results ultimately in effective classroom instruction, gains in student learning, and the establishment of a supportive learning environment. Systematic study focuses on the teaching, the assessment, or the scholarship of teaching and learning of a specific communication course, extra-curricular activity (e.g., forensics), or curriculum (e.g., internships, concentrations/areas of emphases, undergraduate programs). Reflection centers on a pedagogical problem or issue encountered by instructors when teaching a specific communication course. Best practices offer tips for teaching or assessing a specific communication course, extra-curricular activity, or …

Instructional Communication Scholarship: Complementing Communication Pedagogy, Alan K. Goodboy Jan 2018

Instructional Communication Scholarship: Complementing Communication Pedagogy, Alan K. Goodboy

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Instructional communication and communication pedagogy are complementary areas of inquiry; that is, communication instructors will not be effective educators without strategically considering--for each course taught in a given semester--both pedagogical techniques (e.g., writing accurate course objectives; choosing or creating activities that align with the objectives; teaching communication skills using proven pedagogical strategies) and instructional communication practices (e.g., communicating with students clearly; confirming students; integrating appropriate humor). These disciplines offer micro (i.e., communication pedagogy) and macro (i.e., instructional communication) perspectives on teaching that both deserve close attention as instructors strive to be the best educators (and communicators) in the communication courses …
