The Eventualization Of Political Thinking: From The Arab Revolutions To The Trump Era, Oscar Barroso Dec 2018

The Eventualization Of Political Thinking: From The Arab Revolutions To The Trump Era, Oscar Barroso

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "The Eventualization of Political Thinking: From the Arab Revolutions to the Trump Era", Óscar Barroso maps out some of the most important contemporary philosophies of the Event: those of Rancière, Badiou, Hardt and Negri and Žižek. These philosophies of the event are defined as post-humanist political proposals that entrust emancipation not to the realization of anthropological ideas but to the emergence of difference. Examining the pessimistic interpretation that these authors make of what has happened since the events of 2011, the author questions whether too much trust has been placed in the supposed virtue of difference and, …

Failed Anti-Activist Legislation: The Curious Case Of The Brokaw Act, Alon Brav, J.B. Heaton, Jonathan Zandberg

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The Brokaw Act was proposed legislation aimed at “financial abuses being carried out by activist hedge funds who promote short-term gains at the expense of long-term growth . . . .” Sponsoring Senators named it after a small town in Wisconsin that, according to the Act’s sponsors, was decimated by the actions of a hedge fund activist in shutting down the local paper mill with a loss of hundreds of jobs. The Brokaw Act represented the first attempt at federal legislation aimed at restricting hedge fund activism. Since then, new and similar bipartisan proposals have appeared as have threats of …

The Infinite Legal Acumen Of An Artificial Mind: How Machine Learning Can Permanently Capture Legal Expertise And Optimize The Law Firm Pyramid, J. Mark Phillips

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

As the legal industry gradually integrates artificial intelligence (AI) into its practice, the underlying technology continues to advance at a fever pitch. Machine learning platforms arguably represent the pinnacle of AI development, and this technology currently augments and replicates intelligent human tasks in ways never before conceived. The business applications of machine learning are bearing fruit across a spectrum of industries and professions. Yet despite machine learning’s demonstrated promise, its forays into the legal industry have been uneven. In fact, the most advanced forms of machine learning have been relegated primarily to lower-level attorney tasks such as e-discovery, due-diligence, and …

Socializing In The Halls? Chinese First-Year Experiences Of Residence Climate, Jamie Chong Brown, Nasser A. Razek

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

Composing the largest nationality of international students at American universities, Chinese undergraduate students in the United States have dramatically increased over the previous decade (Institute of International Education, 2014). Despite the extensive research on the challenges facing Chinese students in the American classroom, in-depth research on the residence hall socialization process for Chinese students remains lacking (Briguglio & Smith, 2012). This mixed methods study assessed first-year Chinese students’ perceptions of racial climate and community in residence halls at a mid-sized Midwestern private institution. Quantitative data indicated that the students’ attitude toward floor acceptance and racial harmony correlates with their perceived …

2000 - Water Conveyance Systems In California

Related Research and Documents

This report offers a thematic approach to the identification and evaluation of the major types of water conveyance systems found in California. In the past, canals were not always recognized as a type of cultural resource that might need study. Now there is increased awareness that canals and other water conveyance facilities can be historically significant. However, important water conveyance systems are frequently extensive and sometimes quite complex, while transportation project effects on them are typically limited to a small segment of the entire property. Under these circumstances, developing a basic historical context would allow researchers to work from a …

Device History Recall Optimization With Virtual, Locally-Stored Acquisition Databases Using Previously Encountered Communication Access Points And Services, Jibing Wang, Qin Zhang, Srinivasa Prasad Vangaru

Defensive Publications Series

A mobile communication device of an end user (user equipment or “UE”) can use more than one radio access technology (“RAT”) such as GSM, WCDMA, TDS-CDMA, LTE, and NR. Searching for information needed by the UE to use a specific RAT can consume large amounts of power and time. Locally stored acquisition databases (“PLMN Info DBs”) of previously encountered communication access points and services can speed up searches, but can be limited by the storage capacity of the UE. Also a locally stored PLMN Info DB may be invalided when a UE moves to a location that is distant from …

Crowdsourced Market Research And Survey Completion Using Intelligent Conversational Assistants, Reena Singhal Lee Dec 2018

Crowdsourced Market Research And Survey Completion Using Intelligent Conversational Assistants, Reena Singhal Lee

Defensive Publications Series

Insights into customer behavior are important for making business decisions. Yet current market research methods, e.g., surveys, multiple-choice questionnaires, etc., are long or complex, and have little or no incentive for customer participation. The quality and coverage of data that results from traditional surveys is sometimes found to be insufficient.

This disclosure leverages conversational assistants to conduct market research. At appropriate times, and with user permission, a conversational assistant asks a user questions relating to their everyday purchases, behaviors, or preferences. The questions may be longitudinal, audio-based, location-based, etc. For users that provide permission, user responses can be studied, without …

Preparing For The House Of God: Nepali Muslim Narratives Of The Hajj, Megan Adamson Sijapati Dec 2018

Preparing For The House Of God: Nepali Muslim Narratives Of The Hajj, Megan Adamson Sijapati

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This essay focuses on first-person narratives from Nepali Muslims directly before and after their journeys from Kathmandu to Mecca, for the Hajj pilgrimage, in 2005-2006, collected and translated by the author. To date, studies and public representations of Muslims in Nepal in the period of Nepal’s long transition to secularism have focused predominantly on the population’s mobilization of religious identity and its religio-political aspirations, productions, and experiences that help to constitute it as a collective. These representations have been key in affirming Muslims’ rights as a minority in a newly secular federal republic of immense ethnic and religious diversity and …

The Social And Political Life Of A Relic: The Episode Of The Moi-E-Muqaddas Theft In Kashmir, 1963-1964, Idrees Kanth Dec 2018

The Social And Political Life Of A Relic: The Episode Of The Moi-E-Muqaddas Theft In Kashmir, 1963-1964, Idrees Kanth

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The present article is focused on the relationship between a sacred object: the moi-e-muqaddas (the Prophet’s hair), housed in the Hazratbal shrine in Kashmir, and the Kashmiri Muslim community. The relic, which was stolen from the shrine on 27 December 1963, lead to a massive protest in the Kashmir valley and in other parts of the subcontinent, as people demanded its immediate recovery. Such thefts, which have been reported from across the world and across centuries, point to the extreme value of the relics, and the additional value they generate when they are stolen. Similarly, the Hazratbal relic theft became …

Reflections On The Post-Partition Period: Life Narratives Of Kashmiri Muslims In Contemporary Kashmir, Hafsa Kanjwal

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This article examines the political subjectivities of the first generation of post-Partition Kashmiri Muslims and presents their life narratives, both written and oral, as an important vantage point from which to understand shifts in Kashmiri Muslim society in the early post-Partition period. It also explores how these narratives are mediated by the respondent's present, a period after the militancy of the late eighties and nineties, but one in which there remains a mass uprising against Indian rule. This generation was important for a number of reasons. One, they witnessed the erosion of Kashmir’s autonomy and the promises of a plebiscite, …

Exploring Biomedical, Temporal, And Embodied Perspectives On The Timing Of Birth In Central Nepal, Jan Brunson, Suman Raj Tamrakar

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

As an ANHS Senior Fellow, I began to explore the standardization of time in obstetrics and its translation into everyday practice in Nepal by analyzing the various perspectives involved in determining a woman’s ideal time of delivery and a successful pregnancy: those of laypeople, doctors, and the scholars setting the guidelines. I observed Nepali biomedical practitioners’ negotiation of multiple understandings of parturition and their strategies for overcoming the challenges of pre- and post-term births.

#Socialworkadvocacy, Angela N. Bullock, Alex D. Colvin Dec 2018

#Socialworkadvocacy, Angela N. Bullock, Alex D. Colvin

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community

What separates social work from other fields of human services is the underlying need to work toward equality and social justice for every population. This is often accomplished by working on behalf of those who are oppressed, marginalized, or disenfranchised. For that reason, it can be argued that advocacy is at the foundation of social work practice (Belluomini, 2014). The growth of social media and availability of low-cost and user-friendly innovations have changed the way people engage in advocacy. Social media has become an emerging tool for electronic advocacy. In the 21st century, social workers have engaged in electronic advocacy …

Cyberbullying, Relational, And Social Aggression, Latitia Lattanzio Dec 2018

Cyberbullying, Relational, And Social Aggression, Latitia Lattanzio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cyberbullying is a relatively new phenomenon that has only begun to be significantly investigated within the last decade. To date, researchers have failed to develop a uniform definition or determine appropriate terminology. These deficits have inhibited a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. Although a comprehensive conceptualization of cyberbullying has yet to be established, the phenomenon has been recognized as a significant problem affecting our youth. Many of the existing studies are descriptive in nature and emphasize the need for more research. In an effort to drive future studies, many have postulated on the possible similarities between cyberbullying and traditional indirect …

Access To Care And The Use Of Healthcare Services By Women In Rural Cameroon: A Participatory Action Research Study, Grace Tadzong-Awasum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women in rural Cameroon do not access health care as timeously and as often as they should. They fail to get screened for common diseases, with the consequence that such diseases are often diagnosed at a very advanced stage. This accounts for the high morbidity and mortality rates as well as low life expectancy recorded among women. The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the health access experiences of women in rural Cameroon. Methodology: Participatory action research was used guided by a Focused ethnography in phase one. Twenty-five women aged 21-77 years were recruited through local the …

Navigating The Storm: How Proficient Organizational Culture Promotes Clinician Retention In The Shift To Evidence-Based Practice, Nathaniel J. Williams, Rinad S. Beidas

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective

Clinician turnover is a major concern as mental health systems and organizations invest substantial resources in the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). In this study, we identify malleable factors associated with reduced clinician turnover during a systemwide EBP implementation initiative. Specifically, we examine how proficient organizational culture (i.e., norms and behavioral expectations that clinicians prioritize improvement in client well-being and exhibit competence in up-to-date treatment practices), EBP implementation climate (i.e., perceptions that the organization’s policies, procedures, and practices support EBP use), and change in these organizational characteristics relate to clinician turnover during a system-wide EBP transformation.

Method

Data were …
