Chemical Mechanism Of Antioxidation Of Theaflavin, Xie Hong, Luo Zhicong, Li Xican
Food and Machinery
To research the antioxidant chemical mechanism of theaflavin, the antioxidant activities of theaflavin were measured in vitro using several chemical models, including DPPH· (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl) scavenging, ABTS+· \[2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)\] scavenging, and Cu2+-reducing power assays, which was compared with the positive control Trolox. In these assays, theaflavin along with positive control Trolox exhibited dose-dependently antioxidant abilities. The relative antioxidant levels of theaflavin vs Trolox (i.e. IC50,Trolox/IC50,theaflavin value) were calculated as 2.57, 3.13 and 3.74, respectively for DPPH·-scavenging assay, ABTS+·-scavenging assay, and Cu2+-reducing power assay. In conclusion, theaflavin possessed higher antioxidant …

Aromatic Interactions At The Ligand–Protein Interface: Implications For The Development Of Docking Scoring Functions, Michal Brylinski
Faculty Publications
© 2017 John Wiley & Sons A/S The ability to design and fine-tune non-covalent interactions between organic ligands and proteins is indispensable to rational drug development. Aromatic stacking has long been recognized as one of the key constituents of ligand–protein interfaces. In this communication, we employ a two-parameter geometric model to conduct a large-scale statistical analysis of aromatic contacts in the experimental and computer-generated structures of ligand–protein complexes, considering various combinations of aromatic amino acid residues and ligand rings. The geometry of interfacial π–π stacking in crystal structures accords with experimental and theoretical data collected for simple systems, such as …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Historically, natural products have provided unique research opportunities and challenges for organic synthesis, chemical biology, and medicinal chemistry due to their molecular complexity and effects on physiological systems. The total synthesis of natural products has not only produced novel reaction methods and strategies capable of efficiently generating complex structural motifs but also granted access to sufficient quantities of otherwise scarce natural product material for clinical evaluation. These synthetic efforts have facilitated the formation of a transdisciplinary partnership between chemistry, biology, and medicine that has been paramount in elucidating the chemical and pharmaceutical utility of natural products. Chapter I of this …

Radical Chemistry In A Femtosecond Laser Plasma: Photochemical Reduction Of Ag+ In Liquid Ammonia Solution, Victoria K. Meader, Mallory G. John, Laysa M. Frias Batista, Syeda Ahsan, Katharine M. Tibbetts
Chemistry Publications
Plasmas with dense concentrations of reactive species such as hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals are generated from focusing intense femtosecond laser pulses into aqueous media. These radical species can reduce metal ions such as Au3+ to form metal nanoparticles (NPs). However, the formation of H2O2 by the recombination of hydroxyl radicals inhibits the reduction of Ag+ through back-oxidation. This work has explored the control of hydroxyl radical chemistry in a femtosecond laser-generated plasma through the addition of liquid ammonia. The irradiation of liquid ammonia solutions resulted in a reaction between NH3 and OH·, forming peroxynitrite and ONOO−, and significantly reducing …
Model Chemistry Study Of Choline And Urea Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Libby Nicole Kellat
Model Chemistry Study Of Choline And Urea Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Libby Nicole Kellat
ETD Archive
Gaussian and GaussView software were utilized to characterize interactions between choline salts and urea, which form a deep eutectic solvent (DES). The initial system studied was choline chloride and urea, at a 1:2 molar ratio, which is also known as reline. Subsequent systems, substituting the chloride anion with other anions (fluoride, bromide, and hydroxide), were studied to show that the system with greater calculated strength of interaction will have more non-ideal physical properties, such as melting point (found in literature). Observations regarding structure related to counterion electron density and hydrogen bonding were made throughout the studies.

Petrogenesis, Geochemistry, And Tectonic Setting Of A Basaltic Body Within Thegercus Formation Of Northern Iraq: First Record For Eocene Anorogenic Volcanicactivity In The Region, Yawooz A. Kettanah, Adnan H. Bamarni
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
An abnormally odd and rare occurrence of a basaltic body has been discovered in the middle of the Gercus Formation within the large, double-plunging NW-SE trending Bekhair Anticline to the north of Duhok city, northern Iraq. This is the first discovery of such a volcanic body within the widely exposed Gercus Formation in northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, and western Iran. This volcanic body, named by the authors the Gercus Basalt, has a long tabular/lenticular shape with a total length of ~4.5 km and a thickness ranging between 1 to 16 m. It is exposed on both limbs of the anticline …
Development Of Curriculum For Next Generation Science Standards In High School Chemistry, Jennifer L. Brown
Development Of Curriculum For Next Generation Science Standards In High School Chemistry, Jennifer L. Brown
Graduate Research Papers
The aim of this project is to develop a unit relevant to students, aligned with three-dimensional performance expectations, and beneficial to teachers in helping students to meet those standards. To effectively meet those goals, an understanding of what curriculum is and how to develop it is needed. Curriculum is “the high-quality delivery system for ensuring that all students achieve the desired end – the attainment of their desired grade- or course-specific standards” (Ainsworth, 2010, p. 4). Without a clear goal for student performance and a detailed plan for how to get them there, lasting, meaningful learning is not likely to …
Direct Measurement Of Rupture Force Of Single Triazole Molecule By Atomic Force Microscope And Solid Phase Synthesis Of Monodisperse Polyethylene Glycols, Ashok Khanal
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation includes two topics, which are related to each other: (1) Rupture force measurement of single triazole molecule by atomic force microscope (AFM) and (2) Solid phase stepwise synthesis of polyethylene glycols (PEGs).
The reaction of an alkyne and an azide to form a 1,2,3- triazole has found wide applications. However, the stability of triazole under mechanical stress is unclear. We investigated the cycloreversion at the single molecular level using atomic force microscopy. A mica surface functionalized with a molecule containing a 1,2,3-triazole moiety in the middle and an activated ester at the end was prepared. An AFM tip …

Ten medicinal plants used in this study are based on the experience of Dayak tribes. The scientific information about these plants are still limited, therefore, the objective of the present study was to analyze their phenolic content and biological activities. A selected species was subjected to successive extraction and compound isolation. The total phenolic content and total antioxidant capacity were analyzed by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and the phosphomolybdenum method, respectively. DPPH and ABTS assays were used for analyzing antioxidant activities. The antibacterial activity was performed against six bacterial strains by agar well diffusion and microdilution methods. The anti-tyrosinase activity used …
Defect Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Solid State Materials For Energy Storage Applications, Xiaowen Zhan
Defect Chemistry And Transport Properties Of Solid State Materials For Energy Storage Applications, Xiaowen Zhan
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
Replacing organic liquid electrolytes with nonflammable solid electrolytes can improve safety, offer higher volumetric and gravimetric energy densities, and lower the cost of lithium-ion batteries. However, today’s all-solid-state batteries suffer from low Li-ion conductivity in the electrolyte, slow Li-ion transport across the electrolyte/electrode interface, and slow solid-state Li-ion diffusion within the electrode. Defect chemistry is critical to understanding ionic conductivity and predicting the charge transport through heterogeneous solid interfaces. The goal of this dissertation is to analyze and improve solid state materials for energy storage applications by understanding their defect structure and transport properties.
I have investigated defect chemistry of …

Evaluation Of The Influence Of Wording Changes And Course Type On Motivation Instrument Functioning In Chemistry, Regis Komperda, Kathryn N. Hosbein, Jack Barbera
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Increased understanding of the importance of the affective domain in chemistry education research has led to the development and adaptation of instruments to measure chemistry-specific affective traits, including motivation. Many of these instruments are adapted from other fields by using the word ‘chemistry’ in place of other disciplines or more general ‘science’ wording. Psychometric evidence is then provided for the functioning of the new adapted instrument. When an instrument is adapted from general language to specific (e.g. replacing ‘science’ with ‘chemistry’), an opportunity exists to compare the functioning of the original instrument in the same context as the adapted instrument. …

Science education communities have called for rethinking curricula to improve student understanding of the nature of science and the role of science in addressing controversial modern issues such as climate change, energy policy, and pollution levels. One approach to meeting this call is integrating these topics into class activities that require students to use discussion and scientific approaches to solve problems and deliberate potential policy solutions. Deliberative democracy (DD) is one such active learning approach in which students work in peer groups to reach a consensus on a scientific topic relevant to both real-world issues and course content. During DD …
