The Status Of Women In Old Testament Marriage, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2018

The Status Of Women In Old Testament Marriage, Noel B. Reynolds

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In his book Marriage as a Covenant, author Gordon Paul Hugenberger begins with the late 20th century Bible-studies insight that in Israel, covenants were devices used to make binding on unrelated persons the same obligations blood relatives owed to each other. So by covenant, marriage partners became one bone and flesh. This thorough study of the Hebrew Bible and related literatures argues that the view of marriage as a covenant in Malachi 2:10‒16 echoes the first marriage in Genesis 2 and is consistent with the other passages in the Bible that have often been mistakenly interpreted to promote a patriarchalist …

“Swearing By Their Everlasting Maker”: Some Notes On Paanchi And Giddianhi, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2018

“Swearing By Their Everlasting Maker”: Some Notes On Paanchi And Giddianhi, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This brief article explores Paanchi and Giddianhi as names evidencing the Egyptian onomastic element –anchi/anhi/ʿnḫ(i) and the potential literary significance of these two names in the context of Mormon’s narrative detailing the formation of the oath-bound secret combinations sworn with oath-formulae upon one’s “life” (cf. Egyptian ʿnḫ, “life”; “live”; “swear an oath [by one’s life]”). It also explores the implications for Mormon’s telling of Nephite history during his own time.

Why Did Northern Israel Fall To The Assyrians? A Weberian Proposal, Taylor Halverson Jan 2018

Why Did Northern Israel Fall To The Assyrians? A Weberian Proposal, Taylor Halverson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This article is centered on possible causes for the fall of Israel and, secondarily, Judah. The topic is not new. The very destruction of these ancient kingdoms may be the cause for the production of much of the Biblical literature that drives our interpretive enterprise. My proposal is that Max Weber’s socio political theories of power and domination, sometimes called the tripartite classification of authority, may provide a fruitful lens by which to understand some of the reasons Judah persisted for more than a century after the fall of Israel. Specifically, I wish to investigate whether the lack of routinization …

“They Shall No More Be Confounded”: Moroni’S Wordplay On Joseph In Ether 13:1-13 And Moroni 10:31, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2018

“They Shall No More Be Confounded”: Moroni’S Wordplay On Joseph In Ether 13:1-13 And Moroni 10:31, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In two related prophecies, Moroni employs an apparent wordplay on the name Joseph in terms of the Hebrew idiom (lōʾ) yôsîp … ʿôd (+ verbal component), as preserved in the phrases “they shall no more be confounded” (Ether 13:8) and “that thou mayest no more be confounded” (Moroni 10:31). That phraseology enjoyed a long currency within Nephite prophecy (e.g., 1 Nephi 14:2, 15:20), ultimately having its source in Isaiah’s prophecies regarding Jerusalem/Zion (see, for example, Isaiah 51:22; 52:1– 2; 54:2–4). Ether and Moroni’s prophecy in Ether 13 that the Old Jerusalem and the New Jerusalem would “no more be confounded” …

The Problem With Wesley’S Postmillennialism: An Exegetical Case For Historic Premillennialism In 21st Century Wesleyan Theology And Missions, Timothy J. Christian Jan 2018

The Problem With Wesley’S Postmillennialism: An Exegetical Case For Historic Premillennialism In 21st Century Wesleyan Theology And Missions, Timothy J. Christian

The Asbury Journal

This article presents an exegesis of Revelation 20:1-10 followed by a critical assessment of Wesley’s interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10. Overall, Wesley’s postmillennial interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10 is not supported by an exegetical reading of Revelation 20:1-10 (Scripture); it is not rooted in the early church (tradition); and it is based largely upon the optimism of the 18th century which was shattered by the 20th century (experience). Historic premillennialism, however, does exegetical justice to Revelation 20:1-10 (Scripture), takes seriously the early church’s view (tradition), and accords with our reason and experience in the 21st century (reason and experience). As such, Wesleyans …

The Nature Of The Church's Mission In Light Of The Biblical Origin Of Social Holiness, Ban Seok Cho Jan 2018

The Nature Of The Church's Mission In Light Of The Biblical Origin Of Social Holiness, Ban Seok Cho

The Asbury Journal

This paper intends to find missiological implications that the biblical origin of social holiness has for the church’s mission. In order to accomplish this purpose, this paper, first, identifies the biblical origin of social holiness in the Old Testament narrative and its development in the New Testament narrative. Then, the relationship between the image of God in Genesis 1 and the development of social holiness in the biblical narrative will be discussed. Lastly, in light of the biblical origin of social holiness, missiological implications for the church’s mission are suggested. The thesis of this paper is that social holiness- as …

Art Of Jerusalem: Power And Piety In The Holy Land, Abby M. Kornfeld Jan 2018

Art Of Jerusalem: Power And Piety In The Holy Land, Abby M. Kornfeld

Open Educational Resources

This course explores the art and architecture of Jerusalem from the reign of Herod through the Crusades, a period in which the city came under successive Jewish, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, and Latin domination. Particular attention will be given to the repeated transformation of the landscape of Jerusalem through the destruction, construction, and modification of important religious and cultural monuments. We will gauge the role of Jerusalem as an object of desire for the dispossessed and for pilgrims of three faiths. In addition, we will explore how the accretion of myth and memory shaped the city’s symbolic identity, and how this …

Overdose Prevention And Naloxone Distribution In Jefferson County, Brittany Coleman Jan 2018

Overdose Prevention And Naloxone Distribution In Jefferson County, Brittany Coleman

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

The United States in battling an opioid epidemic, and rates of overdose fatality have soared to record highs. Kentucky is among the states with highest rates of opioid overdose fatality, and Jefferson County is responsible for about a quarter of all cases. Overdose Prevention and Naloxone Distribution (OPND) programs have been shown to decrease fatality rates by providing a medication that literally reverses opioid overdose. The programs provide other services such as education and connection to recovery facilities.

Currently, the Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition provides naloxone kits to the residents of Jefferson County, but they do not have a regular …

Keeping A Clean Heart (Chapter 7 Of For Today: A Prayer When Life Gets Messy), Patrick Allen Jan 2018

Keeping A Clean Heart (Chapter 7 Of For Today: A Prayer When Life Gets Messy), Patrick Allen

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "When I heard that some of the kids at school received an allowance, money their parents actually gave to them for no particular reason other than to do a few chores around the house, I could hardly believe it. It seemed too good to be true. I never received an allowance, and the idea of having some spending money of any kind was usually out of the question. Once in a while, my mother would give my brothers and me a quarter each to go to the municipal swimming pool if we hoed five rows of corn in the …

The Context And Effects Of The Spirit Filled Seventy Elders, David Abbott Jan 2018

The Context And Effects Of The Spirit Filled Seventy Elders, David Abbott

Masters Theses

The passage of Numbers 11:16-17, 24-29 is an important passage in understanding the work, role and gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. It also is a passage that sends ripple effects throughout the rest of the Bible, most notably through Joel 2:28-32, Acts 2, 10, and 19, and in Paul’s teachings in Galatians 3:28 and 1 Corinthians 12:31 and 14:1. Although this work does not settle any theological debate about speaking in tongues, it does look into the gifts of the Spirit from an Old Testament perspective. The resting of the Spirit that appears in the Old …

Contrasting Portrayals Of Children In 1 Samuel, A. James Murphy Jan 2018

Contrasting Portrayals Of Children In 1 Samuel, A. James Murphy

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion

Scholars have developed a number of interpretive methods and approaches to the Bible over the last century. Perhaps the first new approach of the twenty-first century is child-centered, or childist interpretation. Child-centered critical readings are largely an outgrowth of feminist interpretation, which has illuminated biblical figures like Sarah, Esther, and Paul’s writings on women in new ways for decades now. Unlike female interpreters, however, every one of us has been a child! Yet similarly, those of us who use this approach typically do so in conjunction with other lenses (e.g., archaeological, historical, literary, or rhetorical) with which to read the …

Teaching The Bible As A ̶S̶U̶P̶E̶R̶Natural Book, James W. Barker Jan 2018

Teaching The Bible As A ̶S̶U̶P̶E̶R̶Natural Book, James W. Barker

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

This article addresses pedagogical practices concerning manuscript materiality in introductory biblical studies courses taught in the “Bible Belt.” A preponderance of these students reify the Bible by presuming its divine origins, and such deep reverence for the text can paradoxically preclude deep engagement with it. To emphasize the human manipulation of texts and writing materials, I present a confounding example of textual criticism to cultivate active reading and critical thinking as well as an understanding of ancient and medieval book culture.

Equivalence Of Kaige And Quinta In The Dodekapropheton, James W. Barker Jan 2018

Equivalence Of Kaige And Quinta In The Dodekapropheton, James W. Barker

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

The essay divides into four parts. First, I give examples of lesser and greater extents of kaige’s revision of the OG. Second, I discuss Justin Martyr’s use of kaige for the Minor Prophets. Sometimes Justin quoted kaige verbatim, but at other times he conflated it with the OG. Third, I reexamine the relationship between kaige and Quinta. Based on the extant evidence from Justin, Origen, and Jerome, one can reasonably conclude that kaige and Quinta were the same in the Dodekapropheton. The prevailing counterargument contends that kaige influenced Quinta no more than kaige also influenced Justin, the Coptic versions, Codex …

A Plain And Precious Part Restored: An Essay Based On Matthew Bates's The Birth Of The Trinity: Jesus, God, And Spirit In New Testament And Early Christian Interpretations Of The Old Testament, Paul Y. Hoskisson

BYU Studies

Once every ten or twenty years, it seems, a book happens on the scene that promises to dislodge a long-held and often beloved paradigm. It is not that the old paradigm is necessarily abandoned, but rather it makes room for a different, equally valid one. The subtitle of The Birth of the Trinity announced such a shift and to my utmost delight delivered on that promise.

Jesus, The Eschatological Prophet In The Fourth Gospel: A Case Study In Dialectical Tensions, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2018

Jesus, The Eschatological Prophet In The Fourth Gospel: A Case Study In Dialectical Tensions, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Central to the presentation of Jesus in the Fourth Gospel is his association with the Eschatological Prophet, anticipated within first century Judaism. Rooted in Jewish agency typologies cohering around such prophetic figures as Moses and Elijah, these primitive associations reflect historical proximity to Jesus of Nazareth, who as a Galilean prophetic figure continued in the trajectory of John the Baptist while also challenging Jewish institutions and religious conventions in Galilee, Samaria, and Judea. From his prophetic demonstration in the temple to his healing on the Sabbath, the Johannine Jesus furthered the social concerns of the Hebrew prophets, and when challenged …

John: The Mundane Gospel And Its Archaeology-Related Features, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2018

John: The Mundane Gospel And Its Archaeology-Related Features, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Jesus of Nazareth is the most important figure in human history. Yet, an ironic fact of biblical scholarship over the last two centuries is that the one gospel claiming first-hand knowledge of the life of Jesus has been pervasively disparaged as ahistorical—off limits in the historical quest of Jesus. This, of course, is because the Gospel of John is different from the Synoptics and also theological in its thrust. However, in addition to these features, the Fourth Gospel is also the most mundane of the gospels. John has more empirical (sensorily attributed) references, topographical details, and archaeologically attested features than …

A Hermeneutic Of Hope – And Faith And Love: A Thomistic-Liberationist Rule, Ross W. Mccullough Jan 2018

A Hermeneutic Of Hope – And Faith And Love: A Thomistic-Liberationist Rule, Ross W. Mccullough

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The early church bequeathed us two rules for interpreting Scripture: the rule of faith and the rule of love. This paper argues that these should be complemented with a rule of hope. It uses Thomas Aquinas to suggest how a hopeful reading might complement a loving and a faithful reading, and it suggests that we see this sort of reading in contemporary liberation theologians.
